Raymond Sidney “Ray” Neil – Obit

Raymond Sidney “Ray” Neil, 86, of Grand Forks, ND, and formerly of Mentor, MN, moved to Wheatland Assisted Living in Grand Forks, in January of this year.  He loved the staff and they loved and cared for him.  He passed away at the age of 86, on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Wheatland, in his apartment, peacefully in his sleep.

Ray was born at East Grand Forks, MN on April 13, 1936, the son of Elmore and Mabel (Bateman) Neil. He began working for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1959 and remained there until retiring in 1997.  The Great Northern RR and Northern Pacific RR merged to become Burlington Northern in 1970 and his children and their friends often referred to him as Railroad Ray.  He held many positions with the railroad; as a laborer, machine operator, track inspector, and finally as track foreman, where he enjoyed many a “railroad 5” nap.  He said his favorite part of his job was payday, but we knew how much he loved the railroad and this was evident when, on camping trips, we would pull over on some tracks where he would get out and inspect them!  He joined the Army National Guard when he was 23 and served for 7 years.  He spent time in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, which he lovingly referred to as Fort Lost in the Woods, and followed in his brothers’ footsteps as a cook.

Ray married Carole Neil on May 19, 1962, in Gentilly, MN.  They made their home in Crookston and raised their 3 children on Pleasant Avenue.  In 1987, after Carole’s passing, he moved to Maple Lake, near Mentor, MN, where he and Carole had purchased a lake home.

He later met and married Audrey (Clark) Greenwood of East Grand Forks in 1993.  They continued to live on Maple Lake.  It was his favorite place!

Ray loved cars, guns, hunting geese and ducks, camping, snowmobiling, and spending time with his family and friends.  He had an outgoing personality and many, many friends.  No matter where he went Ray was always talking to someone he knew.

Loving family members include his children, Jeffrey (Lisa) Neil of Fort Smith, AR; Douglas Neil of Lexington, KY and Nancy (Dennis) LaCoursiere of Brainerd, MN.; grandchildren; Caitlin, Emma, Sawyer & Merritt Neil, Sarah Brooke & Madeline Neil and Theodore, Henry & Sydney LaCoursiere; sisters, Elenore Adair of Moorhead, MN; Carol (Ron) Fayette of East Grand Forks, MN; Karyn (Rod) Oian of Erskine, MN; brother, James (Sandy) Neil of East Grand Forks, MN; sister in-law, Sylvia (Patenaude) Evans and brother in-law, Raymond “Bud” Patenaude.

The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Ray will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, June 18, 2022, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gentilly, MN with The Rev. Joe Richards, presiding. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. The Mass will be live-streamed by going to Ray’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Online messages of condolence may be offered to the family at www.stenshoelhouske.com

The Federal Reserve concluded a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday and and raised interest rates by 0.75%, something it had not done in nearly 30 years. The move was widely expected by most analysts and is seen as a necessary measure to get a better handle on rising inflation.

The blue-chip Dow fell to 29,927.07 points, falling below 30,000 for the first time since January 2021, while the S&P and Nasdaq were both in bear market territory, or 20% down from a recent record, down 24% and 34% respectively. Abbott manufacturing facility in Michigan halts production of baby formula due to severe weather

shutterstock_2164653689

Abbott Nutrition was forced to pause production of baby formula at a Michigan manufacturing facility due to severe weather in the area that brought high winds, hail and power failures to where the factory is located in Sturgis, Michigan. The company expects production and distribution to be delayed for a few weeks as it cleans the plant, which had just restarted production after being closed for several months, contributing to the national baby formula shortage.

The company said that production for Abbott’s EleCare specialty formula has been suspended, but there is enough supply to meet demand until production is restarted. Abbott had prioritized ramping up production of the specialty formula for infants with severe food allergies and digestive problems who have few other options for nutrition. Once the facility reopens, the factory will begin with the production of EleCare and other specialty formulas. Abbott says it also plans to restart production of its Similac formula as soon as possible.

The Michigan factory was closed after the FDA began investigating four bacterial infections among infants who consumed powdered formula from the plant. Two of the babies died. The company continues to state that its products have not been directly linked to the infections, which involved different bacterial strains.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf told a Senate committee on Thursday that government work done to increase the supply means that there will be more than enough product to meet current demand. Califf said they hoped to have a “super supply” of formula to get shelves fully restocked in perhaps two weeks.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF SCAM CALLS USING THEIR NUMBER

polk-county-sheriffs-office-4

On June 16, 2022, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received a reported scam from a citizen of Polk County. The scammer contacted the citizen on the phone, and the caller ID showed 218-281-0431, which is the number for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer told the citizen they missed court, and there was a warrant out for their arrest. The scammer then demanded the citizen go to the bank, take out money, and bring it to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer was confronted as being a scammer and then hung up.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the public that typical law enforcement agencies, including the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, do not conduct business this way. The Sheriff’s Office does not collect any money from subjects with warrants. If anyone gets a call similar to this, hang up the phone and report it to local law enforcement.

Scammers can spoof numbers to make it appear as if they are calling from another number.
