UMC HIRES BRYAN BEAMISH AS THE NEW HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

bryan-beamish

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) athletic department announced the hiring of Bryan Beamish as head men’s basketball coach. Beamish first came to Minnesota Crookston as an assistant coach prior to the 2014-15 season and has spent the last four seasons as associate head coach.

“We are very excited to announce Bryan Beamish as the next head coach of the Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Stephanie Helgeson. “Bryan is someone who has impressed us over the last eight years on staff. He values building lasting bonds with the men’s basketball student-athletes and is well respected by our campus community. He was overwhelmingly endorsed by our current and former men’s basketball student-athletes. He has proven to be a great recruiter, and spends countless hours in the gym and out of it working to develop student-athletes. We can’t wait to see him grow in his new role as the leader of our men’s basketball program.”

During his time as an assistant coach at UMC, Beamish recruited nationally and internationally, with focus areas in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Beyond recruiting, on-floor coaching, individual instruction and scouting reports, Beamish also helped lead youth and team camps, as well as leading the squad’s community service work and coordinating academic support. In this role, he has helped the team earn GPAs above 3.0 in multiple academic years.

“I am humbled and honored to be named the next head coach at the University of Minnesota Crookston,” Beamish stated. “I would like to thank Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause, Athletic Director Stephanie Helgeson and the search committee for believing in the vision I have for the men’s basketball program. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the support of my family, previous coaches I have worked for, as well as current and former players. I am very thankful to be in this position and look forward to getting to work with our current roster with the goal of building something special.”

On the court success for UMC over Beamish’s eight seasons as an assistant included a magical run during the 2018-19 postseason, when the Golden Eagles upset Augustana University on their home court to propel UMN Crookston to its first-ever appearance in the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament quarterfinals.

Prior to arriving at UMC in 2014, Beamish spent one season as a graduate assistant under Head Coach Jim Larranaga at the University of Miami during the 2013-14 season. Prior to Miami, Beamish spent two seasons under Head Coach Lance Randall at NCAA Division II affiliate Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla., helping the Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. The 2012-13 season marked the first 20-win season in program history and Beamish’s two years on staff were the first back-to-back winning seasons for the Lions in 27 years.

He started his coaching career at his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, during the 2010-11 season. He helped the Pointers to a No. 1 national ranking during the season, during which they won the 2011 WIAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships. Beamish helped lead the Pointers to the NCAA Tournament, making their way to the Sweet 16.

He was a highly decorated player for Wisconsin-Stevens Point before commencing his coaching career. Beamish was a three-time All-WIAC player, earning first team accolades twice. Beamish helped lead the team to three NCAA Tournaments. As a sophomore, the Pointers were WIAC regular-season and tournament champions, making it to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. As a junior, he helped guide the team to a second round appearance at the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, the Pointers again made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after earning WIAC regular-season and tournament championships. Beamish was a two-year captain and two-year MVP.

Beamish earned a Master of Business Administration from Saint Leo University in sports business. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in interpersonal and organizational communication from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He is a native of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and resides in Crookston. His grandfather, Bob Krueger, was the head coach for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 1962-75, where he is in the school’s Hall of Fame.

FOURNET BUILDING TO INSTALL ELEVATOR BY MID-JUNE AND FINISH CONSTRUCTION BY EARLY JULY

img-3563-560x420-1

The Fournet Building restoration in downtown Crookston is nearing completion, a project that has spanned the past few years. Building owner and general contractor for the construction, Jeff Evers reported that they are installing a new elevator in the building that will be operational by the middle of June and plans to have the entire project completed and ready to have clients move in by the beginning of July.

The building is a three-floor project that has been in development since 2018 that will be used by multiple organizations in downtown Crookston. “The second floor will be for the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council. They’re taking the whole second floor. The third floor will be for the State of Minnesota for the Public Defenders around the atrium,” Fournet Building owner Jeff Evers explained. “Those will be the main tenants, and then we’ll try to fill the first floor once we get done with the construction.” Evers reported that the second floor is near competition, with most of the offices and hallways having carpeting they have installed refrigeration and cabinets for a break room at one end of the floor.

Evers said they recently completed the elevator shaft for the addition of an elevator built for them by the Schindler Elevator Corporation. While the elevator is not currently installed, Evers said it has been verified by Schindler to begin its installation and the timeline to have it completed and be operational is around June 14.  Other than the elevator, Evers says there are other things they still have to finish around the building before they allow clients to begin moving in. “As far as completion, on the 3rd-floor, we have a lot of trim work and doors to do. There’s a bunch of doors to do in general,” Evers explained. “The back staircase still has to be finished, and the atrium area still has to get flooring and be finished with the railing, so the list is getting quite short compared to when we started.”

While the completion of the building has been delayed several times over the past few years, Evers says he hopes to have it done soon. “We’ve had quite a few delays, but the goal now is to be done here by the end of June or July 1st,” Evers explained. “We should be there if isn’t any other delays or we can’t get supplies or if something is on backorder for another three months, but that’s the goal now.” Evers says that when the building is completed, some tours will be available for a few days to show the public the inside of the building to see the completed structure.

Pictures of the elevator and other parts of the building can be seen below,

demetrius-oberg

The Sacred Heart Eagles scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the West Marshall Fusion 5-3 in the second round of the Section 8A Baseball tournament played in Greenbush.

It was a pitcher’s duel to start as Sacred Heart’s Sam Gapp and West Marshall’s Marshall Treudeson didn’t give up a hit for the first two and a half innings.   In the bottom of the third, Sacred Heart recorded the first hit of the game and it was a big one as Breck Bloom crushed a pitch over the left-field fence for a solo home run and a 1-0 lead.

West Marshall responded in the top of the fourth inning when Will McGlynn reached on an error and a Jackson Kekke single.  Demetrius Oberg and Aiden Anderson followed with walks to score a run and tie the game at 1-1.  Another run scored on an error when Sacred Heart tried to pick off a runner at first base for a 2-1 lead.
Sacred Heart answered in the bottom of the inning when Ethan Arnston singled and Nick Brundin was hit by a pitch.  After a pop-out to the catcher, Isaac Zavoral singled to score a run to tie the game at 2-2.  The ensuing batter, Bloom, hit a fly ball to deep left field to score another run and Sacred Heart led 3-2.

West Marshall tied the game in the top of the fifth inning when Nick Winge walked with one out.  He advanced to second base on an error and scored on a Kekke single to tie the game at 3-3.

Sacred Heart had a big bottom of the sixth inning and it started with a Nick Brundin single and a stolen base.  After a strike out, Isaac Zavoral singled to score a run for a 4-3 lead.  Dave Larson walked and Cullen Rohrich singled to score another run for a 5-3 lead.

Sacred Heart’s Ethan Arnston pitched the final two innings and retired the first batter in the seventh inning.  The Fusion’s Derek Moehrle reached on an error and advanced to second base.  Arnston retired the next two batters and the Eagles won 5-3.

Sacred Heart improves to 18-3 on the year and will play the winner of Ada-Borup-West and Kittson County Central at 3:00 p.m.
West Marshall drops to 10-8 on the year and will play the loser of Ada-Borup-West and Kittson County Central at 5:30 p.m.

Elizabeth Mary Bruggeman – Obit

The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Beth’s life will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, June 18, 2022, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mentor, MN. Visitation with the family will be from 10-11:00am. A family graveside service will take place at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Elizabeth Mary Bruggeman, 68, of Erskine, MN, passed away at her home on Lake Sarah, Saturday morning, March 26, 2022, with family at her side.

Beth was born in Grand Forks, ND on April 25, 1953.  She was the eldest of four children from the marriage of Tom and Margaret (Degelder) Gregoire. While growing up in East Grand Forks, MN she was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and later graduated from Sacred Heart High School as a member of the Class of 1971. She went on to attend Aakers Business College in Grand Forks earning a secretarial certificate.  She continued her training when she went on to study at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead, MN where she obtained a certificate in programming and data entry.  Soon after, she put to use her newly gained knowledge and began employment at Bridgeman Creamery in Grand Forks. Several years later, Beth started working in the office of the East Grand Forks American Crystal Sugar Company. It was there she met her future husband, Michael Kenneth Bruggeman.  Beth and Mike were soon united in marriage on April 29, 1983, in Crookston, MN.  While living in Grand Forks, the couple began building a cabin on Lake Sarah, near Erskine. They soon realized that they wanted this cabin to become their home and their dream became reality when they made the move in 1995.

While Mike transferred to the American Crystal plant in Crookston, Beth devoted herself to her children and her new home. She happily became the #1 fan of her kids and their activities in school and never missed a baseball, basketball, or football game. While her life centered around her family, she also found time for her favorite activities which included knitting, crocheting, cooking, and reading. Beth loved to travel and went on what she’d like to call her ‘girl’ trips to various locations across the United States.  Traveling still further from home, Beth made many memories when she ventured abroad to visit Belgium, Amsterdam, and other European countries.

To many, Beth became the figure of Mom, Sister, and Grandmother as she so effortlessly loved and cared for all as if they were her own family.  Beth always made time to listen and love those around her regardless of the struggles she may have been under.  Her later years were complicated by health issues but she never let that get the best of her as she continued to enjoy life with her family and friends while continuing to rely on her faith to give her strength.

Beth is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, Mike; four children and three grandchildren: Andrew and (Carla) Bruggeman of Fitchburg, WI, and their daughter, Clara Eileen; Joseph Bruggeman of Erskine, MN; Jasen and Stephine Bruggeman and their children, Amelia and Jasen Jr of East Bethel, MN; and Erin Bruggeman of Coon Rapids, MN. She also leaves three siblings: Doug (Jill) Gregoire of Mentor, MN; Mickey (Pete) MacDonald of Surprise, AZ; and Joan (Scott) Enright of East Grand Forks, MN and brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law: Pat (Susan) Bruggeman of Crookston, Paul (Sharon) Bruggeman of Grand Forks, Todd (Deann) Bruggeman of Crookston, and Lee Perry of St. Louis, MO; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Margaret Gregoire; parents-in-law, Kenneth and Lois Bruggeman; and sister-in-law, Pam Perry. May God bless the memory of Elizabeth Mary Bruggeman.

A Memorial Mass celebrating Beth’s life will be held at a future date at St. Lawrence Church located in Mentor, MN.
