Full-summer overweight permits will start in the north-central and north seasonal load limit zones Monday, June 6, 2022, at 12:01 a.m.

Full-summer permits have started in other zones.

Seasonal load limit zones and restricted routes can be found on the MnDOT load limits map.

Dennis L. Chappuis – Obit

A graveside service for Dennis Chappuis, who passed away on March 10, 2022, will be held at 3:30 pm, Friday, June 3, 2022, at the Calvary Cemetery in Crookston with Deacon Dennis Bivens, officiating. Dennis Leonard Chappuis, 79, of Crookston, MN, passed away early Thursday morning, March 10, 2022, at the Benedictine Living Community Crookston with his family at his side.

Denny was born on August 24, 1942 in Crookston, the son of Leonard and Grace (Raymond) Chappuis. He was baptized and confirmed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, attended Cathedral School through the 9th grade, and then Central High School where he graduated as a member of the Class of 1960. Denny soon moved to Seattle, WA where he was employed by Safeway Foods for several years. He had 2 children from a first marriage while living there, Dennis and Lorie. In 1970 he relocated to Minneapolis to work at Hove’s Grocery. He was united in marriage to Carol Ann Zieglmeier on August 22, 1970 in North Minneapolis. A year later they came to Crookston where together they would raise their 3 children: Nicole, Cassandra, and Lenny, while Denny began working as a department manager for the Red Owl Store. He later began employment as a department manager at Leever’s Grocery, remaining there until retirement. At the same time during those years Denny served as apartment landlord for the Nimens-Espegaard complex and several other apartments in Crookston.

Denny was a faithful member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish. He was devoted to Carol Ann and their family and very proud of their accomplishments. Among his favorite pastimes he especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards.

Denny is survived by Carol Ann, his beloved wife of 51 years; 4 children: Dennis (Deena) Iverson of Desert Aire, WA, Nicole (Jay) Frenzel of Northome, MN, Cassandra Chappuis of Fargo, ND, and Lenny Chappuis of Crookston, MN; 11 grandchildren: Justin, Allyson, Daniel, Kimberly, Jason, Chris, Heaven, Trinity, Destiny, Serenity, and Zachary; and a great-grandson, Maverick. Denny also leaves 3 siblings: Donna Nelson and Deborah (Randy) Berggan, all of Fargo, and Doreen (Rick) Langlois of Gentilly, MN; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorie Chappuis; his parents, Leonard and Grace; and 3 siblings: Diane (Rick) Hoff, Duane (Terry) Chappuis, and Darlene (Ron) Paulson. Blessed be the memory of Dennis Leonard Chappuis.

A Mass of Christian Burial honoring the life of Denny Chappuis will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 18, 2022, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston with The Rev. Joe Richards, presiding. Visitation will be at the Cathedral on Friday from 12 Noon until 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed by going to the www.crookstoncathedral.com home page and clicking on the prompt for funerals to begin viewing. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston, in the spring.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA STUDENT-ATHLETES TO PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY TODAY AT MARGARET HALL STEM ACADEMY

Several University of Minnesota Gopher Sports Properties staff and student-athletes from the football, gymnastics, and women’s basketball teams, along with members of the spirit squad and band, will be volunteering at an annual Field Day event at the Margaret Hall Stem Academy in North Minneapolis on Thursday, June 2. This event is made possible by UnitedHealthcare, a proud partner of Gopher Athletics.

In addition to student-athletes, Goldy will also make an appearance, and there will be members of the spirit squad and band also in attendance.

Margaret Hall Stem Academy is the same school that recently received the “Dream Court” in conjunction with the Women’s Final Four, which was held in Minneapolis in April.

John Hinckley Jr., man whot President Ronald Reagan in 1981, to be unconditionally released from court-ordered psychiatric supervision on June 15

On Wednesday, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., ordered that John Hinckley Jr. — the attempted assassin of former President Ronald Reagan in 1981 — will be released from psychiatric supervision later this month. Hinckley completed a nine-month observation period ordered in September, and at that time U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman said the 67-year-old Hinckley would be free of all remaining restrictions if he maintains mental stability.

Hinckley spent more than three decades in a mental hospital as part of his insanity defense for shooting Reagan and three others outside the Washington, D.C., Hilton Hotel on March 30, 1981. Hinckley had acute psychosis at the time of the shooting and said he carried out the attack to impress actor Jodie Foster.

A judge granted his release in 2016 with a number of restrictions, including living with his mother in Virginia, to ensure Hinckley wouldn’t veer into violence again.  Hinckley’s defense team, prosecutors and mental health experts all agreed that they had no concerns about his mental state. Judge Friedman said:  “John Hinckley tried to kill the president of the United States. He came very close to doing so. Without losing sight of what he did 40 years ago, he has been the most scrutinized person … living under a microscope as none of us have. I am confident Mr. Hinckley will do well in the years remaining to him.”

Johnny Depp awarded $15 million in damages after winning defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard

On Wednesday, a Fairfax County, Va., jury reached its verdict in the ‘Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard’ defamation trial, ruling unanimously in favor of Depp.  After six weeks of testimony and deliberating for nearly 13 hours, the jury found that Heard intentionally and maliciously defamed Depp when she wrote her 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post about her experiences as a domestic abuse survivor. Heard filed her own $100 million countersuit, claiming Depp and his legal team defamed her by calling her allegations a hoax.

The jury unanimously found “clear and convincing evidence” that Heard defamed Depp when she wrote the op-ed, and acted with actual malice, and awarded $10 million in damages to Depp in terms of compensatory damages, relating to jobs and opportunities lost, and $5 million in punitive damages. There were three statements at issue in Heard’s counterclaim, and the jury found one statement defamatory, awarding Heard $2 million in damages.

Depp was not present in the courtroom to hear the verdict saying ‘previously scheduled work commitments had him watching from the United Kingdom.”   Depp released the following statement after the verdict, saying in part: “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed….And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

Heard released a statement as well, saying in part: “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”

Take a look at Tom Hanks and Cynthia Erivo in the trailer for Disney’s live-action film ‘Pinocchio’

Disney+ released the first trailer for the upcoming live-action film ‘Pinocchio’. In the teaser, Tom Hanks appears as Geppetto, the woodcarver who crafts the puppet who embarks on a journey to becoming a “real boy.”  Back in March, Disney+ released the first look at Hanks as Geppetto, with Hanks completely unrecognizable in full character.

The film, directed by Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis, also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his “conscience,” Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, and Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John. Lorraine Bracco plays Sofia the Seagull, a new character, and Luke Evans is The Coachman. The movie’s cast also includes Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana (and her marionette Sabina), Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli, and Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick.

The 12th Annual Pirate/Blue Wave Boys Hockey Alumni Golf Outing is scheduled for June 4, 2022.

We are kicking off the weekend with a social gathering at Scobey’s Pub and Grub at 6:00 pm on Friday, June 3. Come on out and enjoy some amazing food and drinks. On Saturday, June 4th we will be hosting an 18-hole golf scramble starting at 11:00 AM with lunch provided at Minakwa Golf Course. Registration for golf is limited to the first 20 5-person teams so please sign up early.
The cost for golf is $75/person or $25/person if you graduated from Crookston High School or Sacred Heart High School from 2018-2022, which includes pizza at I.C. Muggs. We are also selling $100 raffle tickets (only 200 tickets available) with an $8,000 winner. If you are interested in the $100 raffle, please contact Sam Melbye (melbs98@hotmail.com) for tickets.

The University of Minnesota Crookston athletic department announced the hiring of Anne Prudhomme as head trap coach. Prudhomme is the second coach in the program’s history, replacing Andy Gjerswold who resigned after three seasons as head coach.

Prudhomme was a collegiate trap student-athlete at Northland Community and Technical College. The Crookston resident, and Fisher H.S. graduate, competed for the Pioneers as a member of their inaugural team during the 2018 season. Prudhomme competed for Head Coach Rod Lahren. The Pioneers compete in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC).

In addition to competing in college, Prudhomme serves as a board member at the Crookston Gun Club. She has also served as captain for recreational summer league teams.

Prudhomme currently serves as a health coach at Altru Clinic in Crookston. She assists people with motivational interviewing, and providing education and support for individuals wanting to experience growth within themselves. Prudhomme worked as a nurse for Riverview Health from 2005-18.

She obtained her A.A.S. degree in nursing (LPN) from Northland Community and Technical College in 2003. Prudhomme obtained her A.A.S. degree in nursing (RN/ADN) from Northland C.T.C. in 2019. She is a certified wellness coach from Mayo Clinic. Prudhomme received her B.S. in nursing from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2022.

KROX is proud to be the sponsor of the Crookston Blue Line Club 10,000 Puck Challenge this year.  One thing to remember is this….how often do you take a shot standing still???  Remember that when shooting.   Shooting with rollerblades on, and moving around while you shoot will help you 100 times more than standing still and shooting.

The Crookston Blue Line Club is pleased to present the 10,000 Puck Challenge. The program was created as a development opportunity for hockey players to develop their skills at home.

There is evidence to show that daily micro-practices are effective and often superior to longer practice sessions once or twice a week. When you practice a little each day, skills do not erode. In fact, they consolidate. It is like a bank account earning compound interest: a virtuous spiral where skill accrues quickly.

So, how well do you think your shot would improve if you were to take 10,000 shots over a 20-week period? Or goalies how many extra saves or assists can you make?

Think it can not be done? Think again! We have created a plan for players & goalies of all ages and abilities to follow over 20 weeks to accomplish this goal.

GOAL: Increase shot speed, quickness and accuracy in 20 weeks

Player Plan: Shoot 10,000 pucks
(weekly goal: 500 shots per week; daily goal: 100 shots per day – 5 days/week)

Goalie Plan: Complete 2,500 catches, 2,500 blocks, 2,500 forehand and 2,500 backhand shots (weekly goal: 500 reps per week; daily goal: 100 reps per day – 5 days/week)

Dates: May 8th – September 25th, 2022

Ages: 2021-22 players – Mite3, 8U, Squirt, 10U, Peewee, 12U, Bantam
