NASA scrubs launch of Artemis I after engine issues emerge at takeoff

shutterstock_1521722225

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion capsule, which were slated to launch as ‘Artemis I’ on a test flight to the moon, was scrubbed on Monday when engine troubles thwarted the much-anticipated liftoff.

Engineers detected an issue with one of the fuel lines as the rocket was being loaded with propellant. A liquid hydrogen line used to cool the rocket’s core-stage engines malfunctioned partway through the launch countdown, and the test flight was eventually called off after troubleshooting efforts failed. The SLS rocket’s four core-stage engines need to be cooled to cryogenic temperatures prior to launch to avoid shocking the system with ultracold fuel when ignited.

Artemis mission manager at NASA Headquarters Mike Sarafin said in a news briefing on Monday that the agency may try the launch again as early as Friday, if deemed safe to do so.  NASA Administrator Bill Nelson added that the agency will not go through with the test until the vehicle is ready: “When you’re dealing in a high-risk business — and spaceflight is risky — that’s what you do. You buy down that risk. You make it as safe as possible.”

NASA officials said the rocket and spacecraft are currently “in a stable, safe condition,” adding that engineers will continue to gather data from the vehicle on the launch pad. The agency is expected to hold another briefing Tuesday to discuss initial findings from the investigation.

CROOKSTON GIRLS SWIMMERS COMPETE FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON

chloe-boll-vs-trf2

Crookston High School only had four girls come out for swimming this year and new Activities Director Nate Lubarski did some scrambling.  He was able to talk with Fosston Activities Director Ryan Hanlon and they worked out a coop agreement that would allow the Crookston girls to compete with the Fosston-Bagley team.  The team’s name is Fosston/Bagley/Crookston and the first competition of the 2022 season was the Bemidji Pentathalon at the Bemidji High School pool.

In the pentathlon, the swimmers compete in five events and the top swimmers get more points the higher they place.  Crookston was led by Chloe Boll who finished in a tie for 32nd place with four points.  Only 36 girls recorded points in the event.  The meet was won by Detroit Lakes’ Faith Hanson with 110 points, one point better than Taylor Ziemke of Perham.

One other name of note in the top 36 was former Pirate swimmer, Naomi Olson.  She is the daughter of former Crookston Superintendent Jeremy Olson who took the Superintendent job in Bemidji and now his daughters are swimming for the Lumberjacks.  Olson finished 29th place with six points.

We are waiting for the full event results and will add the rest of the Crookston results when we get them.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT’S MEET THE TEACHERS NIGHTS WILL BE AUGUST 31 AND SEPTEMBER 1

The Crookston Public Schools is preparing for the 2022-23 School Year with a night for parents and students to meet their future teachers and walk the halls of the schools with their annual Meet the Teachers Night on Wednesday, August 31, and Thursday, September 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The event takes place during the school’s workshop days, and families get to come in and meet the teachers that will be teaching the children and ask them any questions they may have about the school year. “It’s a great opportunity for families to come in and meet the teachers that will be working with their children and if there’s any last minute paperwork or things they need to take care of in case they missed the Welcome Back to School Day. It’d be a great chance to have all of that taken care of,” said Interim Superintendent Dave Kuehn. “But the most important thing is an in-person visit or a shorter meeting with the teachers that’ll be working with their children.”

While the schools share the night, it is treated differently between the Elementary and High Schools. At Washington and Highland, the teachers set up scheduled 15 to 20-minute meetings during the Welcome Back to School Day on August 18 with the parents of the students in their class to discuss their children’s strengths to help them know their students and begin to form a relationship with the younger students on the first day of school. “I would imagine for those that didn’t come to last Thursday’s Welcome Back to School Day, the elementary school’s offices were reaching out to those parents to make sure that they got the packets of information and have them signed up for the Meet the Teacher Night,” Superintendent Kuehn explained. For parents who have not registered their students yet for Meet the Teacher Night, you can call the school office at 218-281-2762 for Washington or 218-281-5600 for Highland to set up a time. During the nights, the Washington School will also be hosting an event in the school parking lot known as “Big Wheels Night,” where the students can see and explore some of the larger vehicles used around the community, such as a school bus and a fire truck.

Meanwhile, at the High School, the night works very similarly to an Open House, with it letting parents and students meet freely with the teachers during those three hours to discuss their classes, answer questions, and walk the halls through the schedules their students will have. Parents will also have an orientation of the school for transitioning 7th-grade students, and a new student orientation on Thursday, September 1, at 5:30 p.m. “The nice thing with these junior high classes and 7th-grade core teachers, meet often and make special plans for those 7th-graders to help them transition and make them feel comfortable and welcome here at the High School,” said High School Principal Matt Torgerson. “As we move through the next year or two, it may look very different as we start planning for that Middle School model. But right now, it’s just getting those 7th-grade orientations away for the parents to ask questions, for the 7th graders to get to walk the halls before the first day of class and get them acclimated to the High School.” To finish the second night, the families can stay for a home Volleyball match against Ada-Borup/West starting at 7:30 p.m. Students do not need to for a time as all students are welcome at any time during the event from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

The School District encourages families, especially those that are new to the district, to attend one or both of these nights to meet teachers and staff members of the school district, learn more about the schools, and welcome some of the newer staff members to the community. After Labor Day, all Crookston schools’ first day will be Tuesday, September 6.

MARK HOILAND, VETERAN, FATHER, AND CROOKSTON NATIVE REHABILITATES SUCCESSFULLY AT BENEDICTINE CROOKSTON

mark-and-team-560x420-1

The Benedictine Living Community in Crookston released a story of them releasing Crookston native, father, and veteran Mark Hoiland from their facility after battling COVID-19 since 2021 and surviving his tours in Iraq. The full story can be seen below-

“They said I almost died three different times.” Mark Hoiland recalls quietly as he recounted his fierce battle with COVID-19 that began in late October of 2021 when he entered the hospital sick, with difficulty breathing, and was placed on a ventilator the very next day. If it wasn’t for his daughter’s Facebook posts he later read, he said he wouldn’t have even known how close he was to not making it out of that ICU.

“I was told by my doctor; that the medical team had never seen anyone survive a temperature higher than mine at 106*. They said I was a miracle story. When they would flip me from front to back, when I was in a coma, my oxygen levels wouldn’t hold. It was touch and go. When I finally got off of the ventilator, my kidneys started to fail, so in November, dialysis was started. COVID impacted my entire being, including my skin from being unable to move on my own.” He goes on to say. “The bottom line is that my daughters’ love kept me going, and medical care kept me alive.”

Mark Hoiland is no stranger to challenges, risk, and danger. A retired Sergeant with 21 ½ years of service with deployments to Bosnia from 2003-2004 and Iraq from 2005-2007, Mark was a Bradley Gunner and 11 Bravo Infantry Soldier. To then have to face a different kind of enemy right here in our country was his greatest test physically and emotionally. “My daughters Morgan (21) and Madison (18) really pulled me through. Madison, my youngest, was able to support me while still keeping up her studies, swimming, and basketball career as a high school senior. And Morgan…she was my rock and pillar. She was there every day at the hospital, overseeing my care with the medical team. I am proud beyond words of my girls.”

Hoiland goes on to say, “From January 6 through March 2, I was at Vibra, a specialty hospital in Fargo, before spending another few weeks at Mayo in Rochester. When the Villa had an open bed in their Short-Term Care and Rehab, I knew immediately I just wanted to come home. I was SO excited to return to Crookston and be with family and friends again. It was a big part of helping me get strong, heal fast and finally return home to do what I love!”

Nurse Manager Leslie Rasmussen was part of the multi-disciplinary team focusing on Mark’s medical complexity by helping develop and deploy his overall care plan. “The situation Mark had to go through was not an easy one, but with his determination and focused personality, he was able to overcome it. He worked so hard to get to where he is now, and I am thankful that he entrusted us here at Benedictine Crookston to help him through. I am so proud of Mark and honored to be a part of his success story!”

Mark received very specialized and complex medical services and full therapy. “When I came in, I had just started walking again with a walker. Madi, in rehab, worked with me extensively to get me back on my feet. She was great. The therapy team was awesome and kept me progressing towards my goals.”

Madison (Madi) Tate, COTA/L, added, “Mark came from a military background, and you could see the qualities from his military experience such as discipline and determination carry over into his therapy sessions. Mark always worked hard when he was in the gym and was always wanting to push himself and try new things.”

Mark stated that he knew many of the people that worked at Benedictine. “It was a key part of helping me get better fast. It is kind of like family and friends were all over the place. And those CNAs were always willing to help me and ask what they could do. They were just exceptional. Marcie Haugen from Laundry and Nicole Volker from Culinary would stop by just to check on me and see if they could help. Angie Tronnes kept my room clean; she and I go way back. And Staci Wills, what a super giddy and fun girl. Steff Bautista and Leslie Rasmussen led up my care direction and Lynell LaCoursiere and Sarah Follette were great nurses. Everyone was so good to me and so good at their work. It was a great experience at the Villa. We have it all here in Crookston.”

Mark is now home and doing those things he loves to do. He is thankful to be able to live again: Fishing year-round, playing billiards, snowmobiling in the winter, and working at American Crystal Sugar (a faithful Benedictine Foundation community partner). All those things that, at one time, were just everyday happenings in life. Now they are truly a gift enjoyed by an American Veteran who won the battle of a lifetime.
