Sarah Paulson to portray Gwen Shamblin Lara in HBO Max’s scripted adaptation of ‘The Way Down’

shutterstock_2167988235

Sarah Paulson is set to executive produce and star as the late Gwen Shamblin Lara in the HBO Max scripted adaptation of its docuseries, The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin.

Shamblin rose to fame with her ‘Weigh Down Workshop,’ a Christian-based diet program, and founded the the controversial, Tennessee-based Remnant Fellowship Church.  The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin explored the practices of the Remnant Fellowship Church and the legacy of Lara — a flamboyant and charismatic figure with a carefully curated image, who was accused of emotional, psychological and physical abuse and exploitation for the church’s alleged cult-like practices.

The Way Down docuseries launched in September 2021 with three episodes, becoming the streamer’s most-watched docuseries at the time. Just before finishing the series, Shamblin and her husband died in a plane crash; and the series aired two more episodes where they spoke to more people about the controversial Remnant Fellowship Church. The second part examined the mysterious circumstances surrounding the crash and investigation into the aftermath, including new stories from former survivors who share their experience following Shamblin’s death.

CROOKSTON SUPERINTENDENT DAVE KUEHN SENDS MESSAGE TO DISTRICT FAMILIES ABOUT FALSE REPORTS OF AN ACTIVE SHOOTER

crookstonpublicschoolslogo-15

Crookston Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dave Kuehn released a letter today addressing the apparent reports of an active shooter at the schools. The letter can be seen below-

Dear Crookston District Families,

On Wednesday (today), many school districts in Minnesota were affected by false reports of some type of threat related to an active shooter on their campuses. From what we understand, schools or local law enforcement agencies have received out-of-state internet-based phone calls with these threats, which turn out to be unsubstantiated. It appears to be part of a hoax known as “swatting.”

None of our schools received any threatening phone calls today, but this afternoon our local police department did receive an out-of-state phone call that referenced our high school. In coordination with our local police department, our school resource officer, and our high school administration, we took immediate action to check out the situation at our high school building. Law enforcement and school district administration determined there was no active threat to student safety.

We know that our district families are understandably concerned about school safety. Please know that our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We take any and all reports of potential threats seriously, and we are making every effort to maintain an environment where students and staff feel safe.

We would like to continue to encourage our students, our district families, and our school community to report anything that could constitute a threat to school safety. As always, we work closely with local law enforcement to assist in these situations.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your attention to this important message.

Sincerely,

Dave Kuehn, Interim Superintendent

CROOKSTON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT IS BUSY MAKING PREPARATIONS FOR THE UPCOMING FALL

cityofcrookstonlogo1-48

With summer coming to an end and fall coming up very close on the horizon, the Crookston Public Works Department and all of its divisions are making preparations and look to begin finishing some of its summer projects in time for the new season and even for winter.

The Public Works Street Department is currently working to complete sidewalk replacements in different areas in downtown Crookston, with them recently completing patchwork on South Main Street by Schultz Carpeting and preparing to pour and replace new sidewalk panels on North Main Street by Taco Johns. Other improvements were across from Holiday Gas Station, where some trees had pushed up the sidewalk, so the department removed the sidewalk and the trees that caused the rifts and is preparing the sod and grass stages on First and Second Avenue N. this week. A few other sidewalk panels also need to be replaced due to them receiving some damage from holding the replacement vehicles and equipment.

Public Works Director Brandon Carlson said that once those Street Improvement projects are completed, the Public Works crews and the department will shift their attention to maintaining the trees around the neighborhood. “The Public Works crews are going to shift their attentions soon from pavement and sidewalk repairs to hit some diseased trees here around town,” Director Brandon Carlson explained. “We’re going to start in the Samson’s addition and get all of the boulevard trees that are either dead or diseased taken care of down there, and we’ll spider-web out from there. The Samson’s addition, in my opinion, has the most dead trees right now, so we’ll start there and work out from there.” While the department has completed many road and sidewalk projects over the summer, they haven’t fully caught up with the road repair they had planned due to the flooding in the spring. Carlson reported that the department would make a few more rounds around the city to fill any potholes or water valves to prevent the snowplows from damaging them. Carlson said the department’s current goal is to complete as much sidewalk work as they can this summer to allow them to focus their resources on a different area next year.

Public Works’ other departments are also preparing for the changing season, such as the Wastewater Department making upgrades to the Lift Stations and preparing for winter storage. “The Wastewater Department has completed the control panel upgrades, and new pumps are going into Lift Stations one and two,” Carlson explained. “They are also trying to get their water sent down to the secondaries and get ready for winter storage out at the ponds.” The department will also begin jetting the Water Mains for a quarter of the town to clean out any blockage or sewage once they finish assisting the Sanitation Department in replacing the pumps around the city. Carlson states that this will not cause anyone to lose the use of their water, but people will see the truck parked for long periods of time in the middle of some roads.

The Sanitation Department and garbage crews are also preparing for the next season, mainly for Fall Clean-Up week at the end of October. While there is still time for them to plan, Director Carlson is planning to do it differently this year due to one of the department’s garbage trucks currently being unusable. “We used to have two garbage trucks, and one of them is down, so until we get our other one, we can’t operate like we used to. My initial game plan right now is from 24 thru the 29. We’ll do demolition and bagged household garbage, then a week or two later, we’ll most likely do brush and leaf pickup,” Carlson explained. “It’s going to be a split approach this year, and it might work better as we’ll be able to designate more crews to demo and garbage, and we can get it picked up a bit quicker. It might become the new normal, to be honest, but we’ll see how it works this year and go from there.”

We will have more information about Fall Clean-Up week as we get closer to the date, and more information about how it will be done is revealed.

Athlete of the Week – Ethan Boll

ethan-boll
Ethan Boll

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate Football Senior Ethan Boll. Ethan has gotten off to a great start this year running the ball 50 times for 354 yards and 5TD’s. In his most recent performance, Boll rushed for 202 yards 3TD’s on 25 carries, leading the Pirates to their first win of the season 41-18 over the Hawley Nuggets. Boll has eclipsed the 100-yard mark twice this season and is averaging 7.08 yards per carry.

While Boll may be the one rushing the football, he was quick to give props to his offensive line and teammates for making great running lanes. “I don’t have success running the ball without my offensive line so have to give them a shoutout for all the hard work they’ve put in and the job they do up front,” said Boll. “Also, our Fullback Tanner Giese. He does a really nice job of creating running lanes as well.”

Going back to last year, Boll was also the Pirates leading rusher as a Junior, scoring 5TD’s and running for 349 yards. He added 3TD’s as a receiver and caught 13 passes for 163 yards. One key difference for Boll the past two seasons, is that the Pirates have been under new leadership with coach Nate Lubarski now in his second season. “Coach Lubarski has helped me grow a lot as a Football player,” said Boll. “I really appreciate his coaching style. I would say all the coaches we have this year are great and do a good job.”

The Pirates are 1-2 on the season and Boll says they’re hopeful the wins have only just begun. “I think a good goal for us is to win the rest of our regular season games,” said Boll. “We have a lot of work to do but we’ve played some tough teams so far and we know we can build off of that and have more success.”

Away from the football field, Boll plays Baseball, Track & Field, and is also a State Champion Wrestler, winning the 220-pound title last year as a Junior and only losing in one match. Boll also participates in Band and is an active member in the Leo Club at Crookston High School. After graduation Boll will be heading to the University of North Dakota to play football for the Fighting Hawks.

The Celebrate the Young Child Collaborative event “Let’s Go on a Pirate Adventure” at Wildwood Park was held on Monday evening. The rain stopped, the clouds broke away, and the sun shone for the entire event. About 200 children, parents, and volunteers attended this Pirate-filled community event. Children were able to “Walk The Plank, make Pirate telescopes, play with bubbles, do a ring toss, interact with our Pirate athletes, and more. Pizza was served, and each child was able to take a ball home with them to encourage active play at home as well as at parks.

The Celebrate the Young Child Collaborative would like to thank all of its sponsors: Crookston Public Schools, Thrivent Financial, RiverView Health, Polk County Public Health, Tri-Valley Head Start, Crookston Early Childhood Family Education, UMC, Crookston ECI and Summit Committees, Crookston Public Library, and Our Saviors Lutheran School.

Rodney Wendell Oistad – Obit

rodney-oistad-obituary-photo-e1663772227630

On September 16th, 2022 God opened His arms and welcomed home His good and faithful servant, Rodney Wendell Oistad, 89, Fertile, MN. He was surrounded by family.

Rodney came into the world with a bang, born on the 4th of July, 1933 in rural Shelly, Minnesota to Selmer and Clara (Holm) Oistad. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Shelly. He was the youngest of 8 children. Rodney attended Irvin/Marsh River grade school and Halstad High School. A gifted athlete, he excelled and enjoyed playing basketball and baseball for the Pirates. He loved growing up on his riverside home farm. He found joy farming, hunting, and was member of the FFA chapter. Rodney graduated in 1951. Though the youngest, Rodney was very connected and devoted to his family and siblings throughout his life. Nothing meant more than family, and this connection would lead him to follow his older brothers and sister to California.

After high school Rodney ventured west. He was heavily recruited by UCLA, but a clerical error and class requirements landed him at Valley Jr. College in Van Nuys, California where he began his collegiate baseball career. A baseball scholarship offer he couldn’t turn down at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) would bring him HOME. He was a stand-out pitcher for the Gophers, earning a 1956 NCAA World Series Championship, and was drafted in the MLB after his 1955 season. He deferred to remain in college and complete his education. He succeeded and earned degrees in Physical Education and History in 1956. An arm injury sustained that last year prevented him from entering the MLB, but again…led him HOME.

Rodney returned to rural NW Minnesota after college graduation and taught social studies for one year at Fertile. He was drafted into the Army in 1957 and was stationed in Germany. He proudly served his county for two years and was honorably discharged in 1959. Rodney again came HOME.

On June 12th, 1959, he married the love of his life, Barbara Hamre, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile and moved to Crookston, MN where they started a family. Rodney was a juvenile probation officer for Norman, Polk and Mahnomen counties. They relocated for a brief time to White Bear Lake, MN where Rodney worked at Lino Lakes Corrections Facility. In both of these positions, Rodney’s generous heart and endless empathy toward those around him became apparent.

In the mid-1960s Rodney and Barbara moved HOME to Fertile. They built a house along the Sand Hill River and not long after, Rodney took a job at the Fertile-Beltrami School. It was his calling. He taught history and physical education and coached boys and girls in basketball, baseball, and volleyball. He retired from Fertile-Beltrami School in 1993.

Rod held a variety of summer jobs, driving semi-truck, driving gravel truck for Bakken & Malhum Trucking, and helped local farmers with harvest. He loved restoring old cars, woodworking, telling stories, and music (his jingles are shared and sung by his children and grandchildren). Rodney also had a special soft spot for animals. Whether it be horses or dogs, no animal would receive anything but the best treatment and adoration. A furry friend would always make him smile.

Gifted from God with witty humor, an unselfish nature, and a compassionate soul, he was a role model and mentor to all who crossed his path. His “family” was inclusive. All were welcome. Always at the forefront of Rodney’s life were his family and wife, Barbara, and children…Shelley, Kristi, Melissa, Maria, and Timothy…their families…and his extended family of co-workers, friends, students and athletes. He loved to tease. He loved to give. His devotion to their lives, families, and interests was always unparalleled. This is his legacy.

Rod is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara; five children, Shelley (Kevin) Rice, Kristi (Scott) Gullickson, Melissa (Randy) Faul, Maria Bruggeman, and Timothy (Sarah) Oistad; 12 grandchildren, Nicole, Ryan, Andrea, Kolby, Cal, Tyler, Karisa, Micah, Logan, Reese, Kane and Indigo; 19 great-grandchildren, Ella, Landon, Jonah, Kallie, Kai, Ava, Selah, Jett, Liam, Penelope, Alice, Oliver, Silas, Lucas, Gwen, Miles, Selmer, Freya, and Newborn Baby Gullickson. They have fond memories of their grandpa – Skippy peanut butter, Folgers coffee, Twins baseball, Eggo waffles with Log Cabin syrup, love of dogs, and silly songs with off-pitch endings, “Smile awhile and give your face a rest.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Selmer and Clara; brothers, Arnold, Cyrus, Noel, Merrill, Jerome, and Joseph; sister, Marian Laws; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

Memorial Service: 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, September 23, 2022 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN, with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 PM.

CROOKSTON CHAMBER AMBASSADORS STOP AT CANNA CORNERS TO CONGRATULATE AND CELEBRATE WITH JOHN REITMEIER

cannacorners-9-20-22-560x420-1

To say that John Reitmeier has made his mark on the world is an understatement. You may have heard of John playing his part at the Reitmeier Farm. You may have heard him on local radio going back to 1976. He built and was one of the original owners of what is now KYCK and was heard for many years on KRAD in East Grand Forks and KCNN & KNOX in Grand Forks. Now, he regularly appears on podcasts in both the U.S. and Europe that involve travel, Hemp Production, and food. Fast forward a few years, and today the Crookston Area Chamber caught up with John to catch a glimpse of his next new venture. It was very clear that John has a new passion, and it’s called Canna Corners.

The Chamber Ambassadors were quick to ask questions of the Canna Corners co-owner’s new products and John took it from there. He talked about the products that he and Hemp Research & Development Partner Casey Hammer, produce and sell, all while explaining how the industry and laws are changing so rapidly. He touched on the dependency of state legislators and challenges at the local level. Then he changed things up to explaining “dosing” and the anatomy of the human brain. John is in the beginning of a booming industry, and as the industry progresses, so will the products. Canna Corners opened its doors for business on August 2 and since has had over 250 unique customers.

It was evident that John knew the ins and outs of his next venture, but there was something that rose above all. When asked the how and why of CannaCorners, John lit up like a Christmas tree. John quickly took the Chamber Ambassadors on a much more personal level. The room’s mood quickly changed as he shared testimonials from strangers and people close to his heart. John explained how his store and products are more than a store of hemp products. It’s a store that is genuine, cautious, and thought-out products that you know are grown in Minnesota.

“That’s the magic of this product. Most people don’t buy it to get high. The product fixes the human. It fixes the process that tells your brain that you have an illness or are in pain. We are just trying to be the best in this retail that we can be.” You can go to other retailers across the river or state line, and things are not as legit. John confidently says that his product is safe, and you know exactly what you are getting.

John and his co-owner, Casey Hammer, really believe in the product and believe that there are properties yet to be discovered. The products are free from pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals. “Our customers are regular people who want to try something different to give them a better quality of life.” Visit CannaCorners at https://cannacorners.com/ or stop at 323 N Main Street in Crookston.
