CROOKSTON GIRLS SOCCER SHUT OUT BY BEMIDJI

kailee-magsam-1-423x420-1

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team played an excellent defensive game while keeping the powerful Bemidji Lumberjacks at bay, but they only got one shot on goal in a 4-0 loss in a game played at the Crookston High School Soccer Field.

FIRST HALF –

The first real scoring opportunity came five minutes into the game when Bemidji’s Hannah Voge was able to get by a Crookstond defender and got a nice kick on net, but Pirate goalie Reese Swanson was ready and made the two-hand save to keep the game scoreless.  About five minutes later, Crookston had their first quality scoring chance when Cassie Solheim, the Pirate leading scorer, got the ball about 15 yards out and kicked the ball, but just missed to the right, and the teams were still scoreless 10 minutes into the game.
Bemidji controlled play for most of the first 20 minutes of the half and had three or four quality scoring chances 15 minutes into the game, but Swanson was up to the task with a couple of saves, including an outstanding diving stop.
Bemidji continued their relentless offensive pressure with shot after shot. Finally, with over five minutes remaining in the half, the Lumberjacks’ Sage Zetah-Cornelius found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Crookston’s defense and Swanson had a tremendous first half while holding Bemidji to one goal on 10 shots.  Crookston’s offense struggled while only getting one shot on goal.

SECOND HALF –

Bemidji dominated in the second half as their offense continued the relentless pressure on the Crookston defense.  The Crookston defense did a great job of not giving up any great scoring chances in the first five minutes of the half.  Bemidji had the ball in front of the net, and a Crookston defender tried to clear it, but it went into the Crookston goal to give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead.
Bemidji slowly wore down the Pirates as they added a goal with 13 minutes left when Marah Bitter was in front and kicked the ball into the net for a 3-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, Bemidji had a beautiful goal when Marah Wright found Makayla Meza alone in front, and she one-time kicked the ball in the net, and all of a sudden, Bemidji had a 4-0 lead. With less than 10 minutes left in the game.
The Lumberjacks came inches away from another goal with under six minutes remaining when a kick from about 20-yards went off the crossbar, and Swanson grabbed the ball in front of the goal. The game would end with Bemidji winning 4-0.

Crookston drops to 2-5-2 on the year and will travel to Fergus Falls to take on Hillcrest Academy on Thursday.

CROOKSTON VS DETROIT LAKES –

Crookston and Detroit Lakes were playing for the third time this season so Crookston decided to use a different lineup.  The only spot in the lineup that had a player at her usual spot was at #1 singles with #10 ranked Halle Winjum cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.  Thief doubles also won early, as Brekken Tull and Kaylie Clauson won their first set 6-1 before having a hard-fought 7-6 second set victory and the Pirates led 2-1 early on.
Crookston continued to roll as Isabelle Smith won at second singles 6-3, 6-2 to get her first singles victory of the season.
Addie Fee won at third singles in a tight match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
The first doubles team of Abby Borowicz and Emma Gunderson lost the first set 6-3, but bounced back to win the second set 6-2 and the third set 10-3.
The third doubles team finished with a win as Morgan Nelson, who missed most of the season with an injury, teamed up with Paige Abrahamson to win 6-1, 7-6 and the Pirates cruised to a 6-1 win over Detroit Lakes.

CROOKSTON VS BEMIDJI –

It has been a while since Crookston has beaten a Bemidji Lumberjack Girls Tennis team, but that changed in Bemidji on Tuesday afternoon as the Pirates continue to play outstanding tennis in a ?-? victory.

The match was tight from the start.  The match was tied at 2-2 as Crookston picked up early wins at second singles with Brekken Tull picking up a big and hard-fought three-set victory.  Tull won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 6-2, and won the third set 6-4.
Another Crookston win came at fourth singles with Paige Abrahamson picking up a straight-set victory 6-3, 6-2.
Bemidji won an exciting first singles match with Emily Dondelinger coming from behind to win.  Crookston’s Halle Winjum won the first set 6-4, but Dondelinger came back to win the next two sets.   The other Bemidji win came at third doubles with Noelle Mueller and Sam Wood outlasting Crookston’s Morgan Nelson and Jenna Seaver.  Morgan and Seaver won the first set 6-1, but Bemidji won the next two sets and the match was tied 2-2.
Crookston got a big win from Abby Borowicz at third singles when she won a three-set battle.  Abby lost the first set 6-2 before winning the second set 6-1.  Abby kept rolling in the third set with a 6-2 win and Crookston led 3-2.
The next match complete was the second doubles with Crookston’s Addie Fee and Kaylie Clauson winning the first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker and the Pirates led one set to nothing.  Bemidji won the second set 6-3 before Fee and Clauson won the third set 6-2 to give Crookston a 4-1 lead and the team match victory.

The last match left was at first doubles and you guessed it, another three-set match.  Isabelle Smith and Emma Gunderson won the first set 7-6 and 12-10 in a tie-breaker. Bemidji won the second set before Smith and Gunderson won the third set 6-4 and Crookston won the match 5-2.

Crookston improves to 12-3-1 on the year and will travel to the Litchfield Tournament on Saturday.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF SWINDLE GRANDPARENT PHONE SCAMS

polk-county-sheriffs-office-10

Please be advised that a few law enforcement agencies in southern MN have received similar reports regarding theft by swindle phone grandparent scams. The caller will pose as a grandchild stating they were in an accident with another female and her baby, and that they have been arrested. The caller then states they need $18,000 for bail. A “lawyer” then calls and arranges for a courier to
pick up the money. After the courier picks up the money the “lawyer” then call again stating the baby died and they needed to send another $32,000 to State Farm Insurance in California.

In Polk County, bail money is paid directly to court administration or the jail and must be done in person. People that receive phone calls from people in jail are notified of who the caller is and that they are an inmate in the jail.

If you receive any calls similar in nature, please report them to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

There were about 150 people, including approximately 30 volunteers, in attendance of all ages as it’s never too late to try something new!
Thank you to all who attended and we hope to see you at the October 16th event to try out the rink when the ice is in!  The event is open to all Crookston youth and surrounding areas.

Judge orders the release of Adnan Syed after overturning his murder conviction

shutterstock_1015449355

On Monday a judge ordered the release of Adnan Syed, the Baltimore man serving a life sentence for a 1999 murder he says he did not commit, after overturning his conviction. Syed’s case was chronicled in the popular podcast “Serial.” The 42-year-old Syed was released to home confinement after serving more than 20 years in prison.  Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn said she overturned his conviction “in the interest of justice.”  Prosecutors have not yet said whether they will seek a new trial or drop the charges against him. Phinn gave the state 30 days to decide which course to pursue.

Syed had been convicted in the killing of his former high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, whose body was found buried in a Baltimore park. Prosecutors cited a lack of confidence “in the integrity of the conviction” after completing a yearlong investigation with Syed’s attorneys. Lee’s brother, Young, attended the hearing remotely from California. Though he told the court he trusted the system, he also said he felt “betrayed” having believed the right person had been brought to justice.

Phinn’s decision to overturn his conviction follows a request from prosecutors last week, who said they weren’t asserting that Syed is innocent, but that they have uncovered new evidence that potentially links two previously known suspects to Lee’s murder. Evidence about those unidentified individuals had been withheld from Syed’s defense attorneys during his trial.

Syed’s criminal case captured the attention of millions in 2014 when he became the focus of the hit podcast ‘Serial’ that raised doubts about the evidence presented against him, including cellphone tower data. “Serial” podcast host Sarah Koenig was in the courtroom at the time of Syed’s ordered release, and the podcast announced on Twitter that a new episode of the program will be released Tuesday morning.

Britain lays Queen Elizabeth II to rest in State funeral after 10 days of public mourning

shutterstock_2202241855-1

10 days of official public mourning culminated in the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch. The coffin bearing Queen Elizabeth II’s body was then lowered into the royal vault Monday after a ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The public funeral at Westminster Abbey earlier in the day was attended by world leaders, family members and many more; while the final service for Elizabeth in the chapel was said to be a more private end to the ceremonies that began after she died Sept. 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Tens of thousands lined the Mall in London to watch the procession that followed the funeral. The Queen’s coffin was carried on a Royal Navy gun carriage from the funeral service to the Wellington Arch near Hyde Park. where it was then transferred to a state hearse for the journey to Windsor.

Elizabeth’s son, King Charles III, and other members of the royal family were to witness the actual burial in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, which is a small alcove on the side of the main building. The queen will eventually be joined there by her husband, Prince Philip, after his body is moved from the royal vault where he was interred after his death last year. Buckingham Palace said it would not be releasing any other details about the “deeply personal family occasion.”

Alan Alda and Mike Farrell mark the 50th anniversary of M*A*S*H

shutterstock_1522774997

Alan Alda shared a photo of himself with his former co-star Mike Farrell on social media to celebrate a half-century milestone of their 1970s-80s classic sitcom, M*A*S*H.  The photo shows Alda, 86, and Farrell, 83, smiling with wine glasses in their hands, along with the caption on Twitter: “Mike Farrell and I today toasting the 50th anniversary of the show that changed our lives – and our brilliant pals who made it what it was. MASH was a great gift to us.”

Alda and Farrell played surgeons and tent-mates Hawkeye Pierce and B.J. Hunnicutt in the classic comedy, which ran 11 seasons from 1972 to 1983.  Jamie Farr, Loretta Swit, Harry Morgan and William Christopher co-starred. The series finale was a huge television event at the time, with approximately 125 million viewers tuning in.

M*A*S*H was based on the 1968 novel by Richard Hooker, which was previously adapted as a 1970 movie starring Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould.
