Drummer Micky Dolenz, the last surviving member of The Monkees, sues FBI for secret files kept on the band

shutterstock_353184380

Drummer Micky Dolenz, the last surviving member of The Monkees, has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice to retrieve records the FBI kept on the band during the 1960s.  According to the complaint filed, The Monkees were investigated for alleged anti-Vietnam war activities in 1967 after they flashed images and messages protesting the war during one of their concerts.

The 77-year-old Dolenz is suing for the complete case file after a heavily redacted portion was released to the public in 2011 that included testimony from an informant who attended the 1967 concert. The informant described images flashed on the screen behind the band as a “left-wing intervention of a political nature” that included “anti-U.S. messages” on the Vietnam War.

The suit was filed by attorney Mark S. Zaid, a lifelong Monkees fan and Freedom of Information Act litigation expert.  Zaid shared with Rolling Stone“Theoretically, anything could be in those files though. We have no idea what records even exist. It could be almost nothing. But we’ll see soon enough.”  Zaid added that under then director J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI in the 1960s was “infamous for monitoring counterculture, whether they committed unlawful actions or not.”

The Monkees had four No. 1 albums and a hit sitcom in the 1960s. Dolenz and his late bandmates, Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones and Peter Tork, also were investigated for another matter that was redacted, according to the complaint. Many of the Monkees’ songs included subtle anti-war sentiments, including their hit single, “Last Train to Clarksville.”

California jury awards $1M to teen bullied in middle school

shutterstock_1965106768

A California jury has awarded $1 million in damages to a teen who was bullied in middle school after her Los Angeles school district failed to protect her.  On Wednesday, a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury ruled that El Segundo Unified School District’s negligence harmed Eleri Irons, who was 13 when the bullying began in November 2017. Irons, who is now 18, was awarded $700,000 in damages for past pain and suffering, and $300,000 for any future emotional trauma she may suffer.

The original lawsuit, filed in 2019, accused the district of failing to protect Irons while she attended El Segundo Middle School where she was “bullied, tormented and verbally assaulted” by three students, including one who started a petition called “Let’s Kill Eleri Irons.”  The suit said that the bullying “included verbal harassment, spreading nasty rumors and text messaging mean comments” directly to her.  The complaint also accused teachers of failing to notify Irons’ parents after they discovered the petition.

The El Segundo Unified School District issued a statement saying it respects the court ruling and vowed to make the well-being of its students a top priority.  The district said: “As we move forward, we are committed to self-improvement and doing everything we can to prevent bullying in our schools.”

‘The Goldbergs’ kills off Jeff Garlin’s character ahead of Season 10

shutterstock_1695904363-2

The ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs” launches its 10th season this fall, but without Jeff Garlin’s patriarch Murray, who has been killed off. Premiering Sept. 21, Season 10 also introduce a new member to the family, as newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) have their first child.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop shared how “The Goldbergs” will deal with Garlin’s controversial departure from the series midway through its ninth season. Garlin’s exit was a “mutual agreement” between himself and Sony Pictures Television following an HR investigation into his on-set behavior. Barnow said: “This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that. So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.” Bishop added: “It honestly feels like a huge reboot for us. So we have tons of momentum rolling into this new season.”

The series was filming the 15th and 16th episodes of Season 9 when Garlin was suddenly off the show due to the allegations of inappropriate behavior. However, the star still appeared via off-camera dialogue pulled from earlier episodes and unused takes, as well as previously shot images.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL LOOKS TO BEGIN PEER MENTORING GROUP FOR INCOMING 7TH GRADERS FOR 2022-23 SCHOOL YEAR

crookston-high-school-sign-e1661463947307

The 2022-23 School Year is nearly upon us, and the Crookston High School is looking to implement new programs to build back the Pirate Pride that the school and students lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The goal this year that my Building Leadership team and myself decided on this year was to focus on the culture of the building and how do we build back some of that Pirate Pride that we lost over the pandemic,” Crookston High School principal Matt Torgerson explained. “How do we get the attendance at events up and work together as a team and create these opportunities for students to succeed and participate anywhere around the school.”

One way that the school is doing this is by creating a new program known as a Peer Mentoring group, where the school has selected juniors and seniors to work as assistants to the school staff to help make positive role models for the new 7th and 8th-grade students. “One of the things we are starting this year is a peer mentoring group, where we have selected some juniors and seniors who will be working as a principal assistant to myself, Assistant Principal Garmen, and Activities Director Nate Lubarski and are going to be helping us with our 7th and 8th-grade lunches and trying to do a bit of positive role-modeling for them,” Torgerson explained. “Being that kind of big-brother, big-sister idea and make connections with them to welcome our 7th graders to the school and re-welcome our 8th graders back and give them some of those friendly upperclassmen faces and build some of those relationships. Then hopefully knowing that if this program is successful or as we make it successful, those 7th graders might be in those 11th-12th grade chairs helping out the Junior High at that point.” Torgerson says that the school had selected these students that demonstrated great leadership qualities and believes that the younger students will look up to and strive to pick up some of the qualities from them as well.

While the school year has yet to begin, Torgerson and the High School staff is still planning many more programs for the students to help recover the school’s pirate staff and involve the community in their activities. “There are a lot of plans in the beginning stages, so nothing concrete yet, but this is the year of Pirate Culture, Pirate Building, Pirate Pride, and we want to concentrate on that. And our building goal isn’t just based off our students. It’s the students, the staff, and the community,” Torgerson said. “How do we get the community to come and watch our sports, our theater productions, our concerts, and make it more accessible to as many people as possible? We have a lot of things going on at the High School, and we want to share it with everybody.”

We will continue to update the community with any new programs created at the Crookston High School and any schools in the Crookston School District.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT HOLDS FIRST NIGHT OF MEET THE TEACHERS NIGHTS

img-5743-560x420-1

The Crookston School District held the first of two nights of its Meet the Teachers Night at the Washington Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, and Crookston High School. Parents and students met with their teachers for the 2022-23 School Year to learn more about their teachers, classes, and for some, school they would be walking through for the next year.

At the Washington Elementary School, students and parents came to meet with teachers at scheduled times they had set up during Back to School Night last week to discuss the students. Then the children got to see and explore a school bus, fire truck, tractor, and Zamboni as part of the Big Wheels Night happening right next to their playground.

Highland Elementary School did much of the same, with students and parents getting to meet their new teachers and see their new classrooms but also partook in the Highland School Supply Drive, where families donated various school supplies for the teachers and students to have for the upcoming year.

The Crookston High School held an orienteering course for all of the new 7th-graders moving into the High School, where they got to meet the many teachers they would be working with for the next year and get a tour by a few volunteers of the school as to where their classes and other important rooms in the High School would be.

Pictures of the Night at all three schools can be seen below-
