Antoinette Lagasse, Crookston, MN and formerly of Rolla, ND, died on October 6, 2022, at the Benedictine Living Community Crookston, at the age of 100.

Antoinette, the second daughter of Arthur and Regina (Jalbert) Rivard, was born on March 8, 1922, in their farm home near Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan, Canada. One week later, with her mother’s death, Antoinette was placed in the home of her great aunt and uncle, Virginia and August Jalbert.  She was raised in their nurturing home as one of the family.  At age six, the country school provided new challenges for the shy, French-speaking child and the English-speaking teacher; with her sisters serving as interpreters.

Antoinette worked in a limited self-service grocery store in LaFleche, Saskatchewan while waiting for Omer, her future husband, to complete his four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Army during World War II.  Omer, unable to purchase a car following the war, borrowed his father’s, to make the journey to wed Antoinette in October 1946.  This union saw the formation of a family of six, three sons and three daughters.

Whatever she took on, Antoinette gave it her best; whether raising her family, entertaining relatives, creating decorative cakes, or doing clothing alterations.  Her expert skills touched many lives.

St. Joachim Catholic Church in Rolla, ND was a big part of her life, whether assisting the Altar Society, washing the altar linens, or instructing many in the sacraments of Penance and First Communion.

Antoinette will be lovingly remembered by her family:  Lucille (David) Des Roches and their daughter, Jeannine (John) Hunt and their son, Dalton; Estelle (Terry) Kirchoffner and their daughters, RaeAnn (Todd) Meyer and their family, Hadley, Harper, and Hudson; and Brieãnn (Michael) Jochim and their children Dominic, Felicity, Lorelei, Everett and Merida; Raymond (Diane) Lagasse and their family, Christopher (Megan) Lagasse and their children, Micah, Emmett, and Briella; and Aaron.  Daughter-in-law (Eileen) and her family: Daniel (Roberta) and their children, Lauren, Roxy Praus and children Payden, Jaxon, and Westyn, and April (Travis) Fugere and children Piegan, Zoey, and Halen; Deirdre (David) Foertsch and her daughters, MyLynn (Ross) Barten and their child Lyla, and Jana; Darcy (Damon) Disrud and their children Lane (Deseire) and their child Everett, and McKayle; granddaughters, Jenny (Henry) Campos and their son, Dylen, and Katie (Nathan) Reineke and their children McKenna, Morgan, Nora, Ella, Caden and Claire.

Antoinette was preceded in death by her husband, Omer; sons, Leo and Roger; daughter and son-in-law, Leonie and Thomas Boe; parents, Arthur and Regina Rivard; step-mother, Leonie Rivard; foster family members: August, Virginia, Augustine, Elie, Elida, Merilda, Leo, and Antoine Jalbert; sisters: Alice, Therese and Gisele; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Rene Lorrain, Raymond Gauthier, Louis Nogue, Henry and Elizabeth Lagasse, Emil and Emma Lagasse, Arthur and Irene Lagasse, Marie Jalbert, Eva and Art Winslow, Zenon and Anne Lagasse, Fern Lagasse, Walter Godfrey, Laura and Kermit Hellem, Robert Pidde, Louis and Clarice Lagasse, Etienne Jalbert, Stella and Everette Dawson, and Linda Lagasse.

Services are scheduled at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Rolla, ND with the prayer service on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 pm and the Funeral Mass on Friday, October 21 at 11:00 am.

2 people shot in front of Long Island home of New York Rep. Lee Zeldin while daughters are inside

Republican candidate for New York governor, and current NY congressman Lee Zeldin says his family is safe after two strangers were shot outside his Long Island home on Sunday.

In a statement released by his office, Zeldin said that he does not know the identities of the two people who were shot, but that they were found under his porch and in the bushes in front of his home in Shirley, New York.  The congressman and his wife were returning from a parade in the Bronx when the shooting occurred, but their teenage daughters were home and heard gunshots and screaming. Zeldin said his 16-year-old daughters locked themselves in a bathroom and called 911.

The two people who were shot were taken to local hospitals, and Zeldin said police officers were at his home investigating Sunday evening, and looking over the home’s security cameras. Said Zeldin: “My daughters are shaken, but ok. Like so many New Yorkers, crime has literally made its way to our front door. My family is grateful to all who have reached out and we will provide another update when we can.”

The Suffolk County Police Department issued a brief statement saying it was investigating the shooting, and a police spokeswoman said she had no information to release about who fired the shots or who first found the two people shot.

Zeldin is running against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, who said she was briefed on the shooting. Hochul tweeted: “I’ve been briefed on the shooting outside of Congressman Zeldin’s home. As we await more details, I’m relieved to hear the Zeldin family is safe and grateful for law enforcement’s quick response.”

Twitter, Instagram restricts Kanye West’s accounts following backlash over antisemitic posts

shutterstock_311571146-11

After facing a similar restriction on Instagram, Kanye “Ye” West’s Twitter account was locked by the social media platform for violating its policies after he shared two tweets that have been criticized as antisemitic. West’s first tweet has since been deleted by Twitter for “violating the Twitter rules.” That tweet claimed that he couldn’t be antisemitic and said he had been “toyed with” by the Jewish people, writing in the deleted post: “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death [sic] con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE. The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also. You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.”  A second post remains public on Twitter, saying: “Who do you think created cancel culture?”

West’s Instagram account was placed on restriction a day earlier, after the platform deleted content from his account for a violation of its policies.  A spokesperson for Meta said that temporary restrictions on posting, commenting and messaging are standard practice for accounts that regularly violate the social media platform’s policies. The company did not indicate which specific posts of Ye’s were the cause behind the restriction.  West had shared a now-deleted post featuring a screenshot of a message allegedly sent to rapper Diddy, that had been criticized as antisemitic by Jewish advocacy groups like the American Jewish Committee. Following his restriction on Instagram, West promptly returned to Twitter (which he had taken a break from), and he called out Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for his restriction from the platform.

This is not the first time West has dealt with restrictions from Instagram.  In March, West was suspended from the social media platform for 24 hours, with content from his account deleted in that incident for violations of policies for hate speech, bullying and harassment.

IRISHMAN SHANTY IN THE PROCESS OF TRANSITIONING OWNERSHIP WITHIN THE GREGG FAMILY

img-6578

The Irishman’s Shanty has been a part of Crookston since 1945 and a place many have gone for food, drinks, and celebration. During that time, it has gone through many different owners, and the Shanty is currently in the works of having a new one.

The Shanty has been owned by the Gregg family since 1979, with the current owner Paul Gregg, taking ownership of it in 1984, but after 38 years, Paul is ready to pass the ownership and role of the head chef on to his youngest son, Andy Gregg. “I think it’s time for some new blood, and Andy has some new ideas, and already I see him posting a lot more on the website and Facebook, and he has a lot of good ideas as far as making dishes from scratch,” Irishman’s Shanty owner Paul Gregg explained. “Like mashed potatoes and his own alfredo sauce, he has a lot of good ideas, and I think our customers will be open to that. It’s nice when you get somebody young and new in here, and it’s good for the town with a family member coming back in town.”

Before taking the role from his father, Andy worked in criminal justice for six years in Fargo. He had grown up with a love of cooking and decided to return to Crookston to take the position, as the thought of cooking in the Shanty was always a thought in his mind.

This doesn’t mean Paul is officially leaving the Shanty as the head chef however, as he still plans to cook for most of the morning shift and help the restaurant in any way he can, while Andy covers the shifts during the night. Both have declared that currently, the restaurant is working more like a co-ownership instead of there being a sole owner. “I don’t like to be here at 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at night, that’s past my bedtime. I like the morning shift and I’m at the point in my life where I don’t have to set an alarm clock like most people my age. I’m at the point where I like to cover morning breakfast and lunches and if work a 30- or 40-hour week, it just depends on what’s going on,” said Paul. “It works out pretty well as I’m more of a night owl, so I prefer to handle the night crowd. So, when it’s late on Friday night that’s my thing and I like it when it’s super busy and when it keeps the rush going. But I’m not a huge fan on the big mornings so I want to keep this guy (Paul) around as long as possible,” Andy Gregg explained.

While the Greggs have not confirmed a date as to when the transition of full ownership will happen, Paul noted that the transition will be seamless for the customers, and they will see improvements done to the restaurant in the future in a variety of ways. “I’m not going to give any spoilers, but keep following the Facebook page, because I like to post things and keep people updated. But some things are that, when I was in the Fargo area, I liked a lot of the different tap beers there, so I’m introducing some of the areas that had my favorite taps,” Andy Gregg explained. “A new one would be from the Drekker area or maybe get some other ones around the area like Duluth. We have a small tap list but let’s make it better.” Gregg also hinted that the restaurant may do some remodeling in the future but said to follow the Shanty’s Facebook page to stay up to date on all of the news happening within it at www.facebook.com/homeoftheshantyburger/.
