sddefault_live-16

The Crookston Pirate Football team is hosting rival East Grand Forks on homecoming tonight.  We have the game on KROX Radio and the live stream below.

1st Quarter

The Green Wave received the opening kickoff and started their opening drive at their own 35. The Green Wave stuck to the ground to begin a long-lasting drive for their first six plays with John Anderson and Drew Carpenter sneaking ahead to quickly get down to the Pirates 25 yard line. The Green Wave continued to travel on the ground to eat the clock and push into the Pirates’ Red Zone before the Pirates finally stopped the Green Wave short of a first down at their 10 yard line to have them turn the ball over on downs and start the Pirates at their own 10 with 3:25 left. The Pirates struck back with their own running game with Running Back Ethan Boll, who pushed them out of their own red zone and got a fresh set of downs in just two plays. The Pirates continued with the running game, but with a trick play with a 12-yard run by Tight End Carter Coauette to get the Pirates to their own 35 yard line. The Pirates continued to push to past the 40 yard line, but time expired in the first quarter with no score by either team.

2nd Quarter

The Pirates continued to move on the ground and got a first down off a short run by Tanner Giese. The Pirates then struck a major blow on the Green Wave defense with a deep pass to George Widman to set the Pirates up inside the Green Wave Red Zone. However, the Green Wave swallowed the Pirates rushing attack to get into the red zone, so the Pirates tried for a field goal, but kicker Jake Erickson’s kick sailed wide left of the post to keep the game scoreless. After the missed Field Goal, the Green Wave took over at their 20-yard line and they returned to their running attack again, and pushed their way up to their own 30 yard line. The Green Wave then took made a quick pass through the air to get another first down to Samuel Schumacher, who made a short-armed catch to move the chains and get the Green Wave to midfield. The Pirates were able to hold the Green Wave inside their own territory and forced them to punt it away, but the Green Wave was able to prevent the ball from going into the endzone forcing the Pirates to start from their own 2 yard line with 2:56 left in the half. The Pirates stuck with their ground game with Ethan Boll pushing them out of their own endzone to get them a first down at their own 14 yard line. However, the Green Wave defense came crashing down on Quarterback Jack Doda and Ethan Boll to prevent them from getting a first down and forced the Pirates to punt. The Green Wave’s Cooper Smith took the return around mid-field and was able to move the ball forward to start the Green Wave at the Pirates’ 40 yard line with about 2 minutes left in the half. The Green Wave gave a quick screenplay to Smith again, who charged down to the Pirates 22 yard line to give the Pirates another first down just outside of the Pirates’ Red Zone. The Pirates’ defense brought the pressure on Drew Carpenter, who fired a lob to the end zone, but Sophmore Linebacker Rylan Lubarski snatched the ball out of the air to stop the drive and end the half with the score still tied at 0.

img-6580-rotated-e1665177100369-256x420-1

Earlier today, the Crookston High School celebrated its annual Homecoming Pepfest in the High School gymnasium. After being welcomed by Health Teacher Josh Hardy, the Crookston Cheer team was introduced to lead the Crookston Rouser and get the grades fired up.

The contestants of Miss Crookston then took center stage to do a recreation of their opening number from Ox Cart Days, which led to the introduction of the 2022 Homecoming Court. The Homecoming Court this year included:

The king’s court: Tanner Giese, Jaren Bailey, Jack Doda, and George Widman

The queen’s court: Libby Salentine, Stella Duden, Hannah Brouse, Carly Brown, and Abby Borowicz

And this year’s King and Queen were T.J. Sanchez and Stella Duden

The Pepfest then went into its entertainment section with the Crookston Volleyball, Soccer, Girls Tennis, and Football teams all participating in a lip sync battle, where they could perform any form of entertainment they wanted for the school and be judged by a panel of teachers. In the end, the Girls Tennis team was awarded first place out of all of the teams. To finish the Pepfest, Activities Director, Greg Garmen introduced all fall Senior athletes.

Homecoming week will conclude tonight with the football team hosting East Grand Forks at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Homecoming dance at 9:30 p.m. inside the Crookston High School.

CHS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CLASS IS BACK WITH MORE PROJECTS COMING SOON

img-6220-560x420-1

The Crookston High School’s Community Projects Class is back for another year of projects for students that took woodworking and metalworking classes and use the lessons they’re taught to complete various projects for the school or the community.

The class was introduced last year and is taught by Industrial Education Teacher Travis Oliver. Who takes students who have been in his starting courses for woodworking and metalworking classes and brings them into the class to utilize the skills they were taught to create projects. “Community projects is a class where I talk to different people within our community and school district about some projects they’ve wanted to get done but haven’t gotten done,” Oliver explained. “Maybe there’s something they said they could do, but they couldn’t. So, I take the students, we design it, and we march forward and try to get that project completed.” Oliver usually creates small teams of students to create the projects, with some of them having some relation to the project.

The first project the class has that’s near completion is a new scorekeeper and ticket booth for the Crookston High School soccer field being made by Hunter Knutson, Hunter Kresl, Evin Trudeau, Ryan Abeld, Jackson Demarais, and Jaren Bailey. The team began the project by building the booth’s base, framing it with a few 2×4 pieces of wood, and adding some ¾ inch plywood to build up the frame of the booth. “There’s not too much left to it. We just need to put the plexiglass in and the roof, then chip her off with some paint, and she is good to go,” senior Hunter Kresl explained. Kresl noted that the final additions to the booth should be complete by today, and they will add paint next week before they install it on the field by Wednesday.

The second project the class has near completion is a set of bleachers for the High School football team to use for future games being made by Koda Donarski, Chase Proulx, Johnna Porter, Javen Lund, and Jamie Brown. “We used old benches from the Crookston arena, so we’re not wasting material,” junior Javen Lund explained. “We had to get new frames for them and put them on the bottom to make them useable.” The students currently have created two bleachers but are planning the create two more with the materials they have to complete four bleachers for the football team to use in their later games to allow some of the players to rest between plays and give the team more spaces to put some of their equipment.

Along with those projects, Oliver said they still have some projects left over from the previous year that they are looking to finish, mainly at the Crookston Sports Center. The main one he’s looking to complete is finishing some new lockers for the girl’s locker room that a group of students had started, and is hoping to finish and install them later this year. We will continue to check back with the Community Projects class and its students when they’ve completed their latest projects. More information from the students about these projects can be heard on this week’s rendition of Focus on Education. You can listen to the latest rendition on Saturday, October 8, at 8:35 a.m. on 105.7 FM and 1260 AM, or 92.7 FM in East Grand Forks on KROX.

Pictures of the students and their projects can be seen below.

2 dead, 8 injured in stabbing rampage on the Las Vegas Strip

shutterstock_2006140871-1

A suspect has been arrested in connection to a stabbing rampage in front of the Wynn Casino on the famed Las Vegas Strip that left two people dead and at least eight others wounded on Thursday. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said on Twitter: “At approximately 11:42 a.m, the LVMPD received a report of a stabbing with multiple victims in front of a casino in the 3100 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard.”

One person was initially declared dead at the scene, while the other victims were taken to hospitals. Capt. Dori Koren of the Metropolitan Police Department updated during a news briefing that two people were pronounced dead, and the surviving victims were taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Three of those victims were in critical condition, while the others are stable. Koren said a large kitchen knife was found on scene and was presumed to be the weapon used in the attack.  She added that “the scene is under control. There is not a safety issue at this time.”

Police said the suspect was taken into custody after he was found in front of the Venetian Hotel, adding that he “had a significant amount of blood on his sleeves at the time of the arrest”. The suspect was not immediately identified, and the investigation is ongoing. No motive for the attacks was immediately provided.

President Biden announces pardons of federal marijuana offenses, urging states to follow

shutterstock_2192835807-1

On Thursday, President Joe Biden announced pardons for federal marijuana offenses, and urged states to consider pardons, as well. Biden also announced a plan to review how marijuana is classified under federal law.

Biden’s pardons apply to all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, clearing about 6,500 people convicted between 1992 and 2021 and thousands more who were convicted in the District of Columbia. The president said: “There are thousands of people who have prior federal convictions for marijuana possession, who may be denied employment, housing or educational opportunities as a result.”

Biden said in a statement from the White House: “I am urging all governors to do the same with regard to state offenses. Just as no one should be in a federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local jail of state prison for that reason, either.” The president will also move to review the classification of marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug.

Biden also referred to the United States’ opioid crisis, noting that marijuana is scheduled “even higher than fentanyl and methamphetamine — the drugs that are driving our overdose epidemic.” While Biden is advocating a move away from marijuana criminalization, he added that “important limitations on trafficking, marketing and underage sales should stay in place.”
