MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES GIVES TIPS AND REMINDERS FOR UPCOMING DEER SEASON

With the fall season in full swing, another season is coming into view for many people throughout Minnesota. Specifically, the regular firearms statewide hunting season for deer is coming up on Saturday, November 5, for the Zone 2 areas of Minnesota, which Crookston and other local cities are a part of. With the season coming to the state in under a month, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking to ensure everyone is prepared and informed of the new regulations and guidelines they will have to follow for the season.

The main thing the DNR wants hunters to understand is the current rules and regulations or any changes to the department’s rules for the season. Some of the newest changes include a ban on ammunition made of lead for hunting in State Parks and Scientific and Natural Areas. Another is that there have been changes to the locations and times of the “early antlerless” season. A season that helps reduce the number of deer in higher-density areas. “There are changes to our early antlerless season, and there are more areas that there have early antlerless season starts,” DNR Thief River Falls and Erskine Area Wildlife Supervisor Doug Franke explained. “That season is from October 20 to the 23, which is coming up rather quickly. The reduction in the number of deer has also dropped from five to three, so only three antlerless deer can be collected.” Franke also reminds hunters that they need to renew or obtain their hunting licenses every year. There are bonus permits that they need to get if they wish to hunt antlerless deer or collect additional antlerless deer in certain areas that allow them. If they want to begin hunting on the first day of the season, they must get their license at least one day before November 5, as the DNR will not allow them to hunt until the day after they obtain their license. Franke also noted that this year, the DNR is allowing people to use their base license in place of permits for antlerless deer.

For other youth seasons, there are youth licenses for children ages 10-12 that they can get for free but are still required to have, and youth licenses for children ages 13-17 have a reduced fee license for $5. The other significant change that was made is Zoning area 261 (which Crookston is a part of) has now changed to area 661, and a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Management area. Which has some new mandatory events hunters will have to partake in before they can begin hunting to help the DNR. “The folks during the first two days of the firearms season, November 5 and 6, is mandatory required sampling, and there will be stations in Oslo, Climax, East Grand Forks, and Crookston, where there will be staff stations for sampling,” Franke explained. “After that, it’s voluntary, and there will be self-sampling stations at those locations for people to drop a deer head off that we can extract samples of afterwards.” Franke noted that while there is voluntary sampling, it is critical that the DNR gets samples from those stations to help find Chronic Wasting disease in the area.

The DNR also recommends, especially for people or children going to hunt for the first time to take the time to understand the firearms they’re using to make sure they are using them safely. “The other thing is safety. If you’re not familiar with the gun you’re using, make sure you get to a firing range and take some target practice. Obviously, understanding the different types of bullets available and knowing your target at this time of year,” Franke explained. “Especially for new people, regardless of what age you are, hunting with someone who is familiar or more knowledgeable is always a good idea. Having a mentor or someone who understands the hunting season and how to hunt deer is always beneficial to help participate, and anyone assisting with the hunt needs to be licensed as well.”

The regular firearms statewide hunting season for deer for Zone 2 areas is coming up on Saturday, November 5. To see all of the changes and new regulations added by the Department of Natural Resources, you can go to the DNR’s website at www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/deer/index.html.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL HELPS RIVAL SCHOOL ARRIVE AT FINAL GAME OF REGULAR SEASON

jack-everett-e1664927656836

On Tuesday, October 4, the Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team hosted the East Grand Forks Green Wave at the Crookston High School soccer field for the final game of their regular season that ended in a close 1-0 victory for the Pirates to give them a final 5-9 record. But if you can believe it, that game almost never happened on Tuesday.

The East Grand Forks Green Wave soccer team had an issue that many activity directors and teams have near the end of their seasons, finding transportation to the game, as all of the buses they had were unavailable to take them on Tuesday afternoon. While Crookston easily could’ve accepted a forfeit win for the game, CHS Activities Director Nate Lubarski took some quick action to ensure the game was played. “They were struggling to find bussing, which certainly happens a lot this time of year, with driving beat trucks, and everybody’s short of busses as well,” Lubarski explained. “But it was the final game of our regular season, and we wanted to make sure we got the game in, so we talked to Scott Koberinski, the East Grand Forks Activities Director. He was struggling with bussing issues in being able to get them here. So, we talked to Transportation Manager Rick Niemela, which works magic for us on a daily basis, and we were able to send a bus over there to get them here and continue to play that varsity match.” While the schools were unable to fit the Junior Varsity game into the schedule with the delay to the start of the game, but the varsity game was able to begin on time and ended with the Pirates getting a close victory to truly improve their season. But despite being rival schools, the Crookston High School is more than willing to lend a helping hand to its fellow Section competitors. “It’s certainly a rivalry game, that’ll take care of itself, but the key is that it was a section game, and we wanted to make sure we played it before playoffs were happening,” Lubarski explained. “So, no matter if it was East Grand Forks or another team, we’re going to do what we can to get that game in and offer whatever help we can.”

East Grand Forks was able to get another bus ride to take them home from their transportation department, but they were thankful to the Crookston High School for their help in making the game happen, and Lubarski is confident that the actions would be recuperated from East Grand Forks if the situation was reversed or if they ever need some other form of help from them. “They were great to work with and certainly thankful that we were able to do that for them,” Lubarski said. “And if the time arises and we may need some help from them, they would certainly reciprocate that too.”

The Crookston Pirates Boys Soccer team will start their first match in the Section 8A playoffs on Tuesday, October 11, at Fergus Falls.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL SENDS BUS TO EGF TO PICK UP BOYS SOCCER TEAM TO PLAY THEIR GAME ON TUESDAY

On Tuesday, October 4, the Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team hosted the East Grand Forks Green Wave at the Crookston High School soccer field for the final game of their regular season that ended in a 1-0 victory for the Pirates.  But if you can believe it, that game almost never happened on Tuesday.

East Grand Forks School District had an issue that many schools across the country have faced, finding transportation to the game.  All of the buses EGF had were being used so the team didn’t have a ride. East Grand Forks was able to get another bus ride to take them home from the EGF School District transportation department, but they were thankful to the Crookston High School for their help in making the game happen, and Lubarski is confident that the actions would be recuperated from East Grand Forks if the situation was reversed or if they ever need some other form of help from them. “They were great to work with and certainly thankful that we were able to do that for them,” Lubarski said. “And if the time arises and we may need some help from them, we certainly know they would probably reciprocate that too.”

The Crookston Pirates Boys Soccer team will start their first match in the Section 8A playoffs on Tuesday, October 11.

Lack of busses or bus drivers has been a problem across the state.  Earlier this week, the Moorhead High School said they might not be able to play games this week because of a lack of bus drivers.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATES COLOR WARS DAY WITH DECORATIONS AND VOLLEYBALL

img-6381-560x420-1

The Crookston High School had its annual Color Wars as part of the fourth day of its Homecoming week. Each grade was assigned a color to wear and decorated their hallway and locker room area with balloons, streamers, and other items in that color. The colors for each grade this year are:

  • 7th grade- Green
  • 8th grade-yellow
  • 9th grade- red
  • 10th grade- blue
  • 11th grade- white
  • 12th grade- black
  • Staff- purple with pink lettering

The students had 45 minutes to decorate the hallways as much as possible in their colors and went above and beyond with the decorations and creativity.

After the students finished decorating their halls, they crowded into the gym to watch several volleyball games between the grades, with the 7th and 8th grades cheering in the stands. The Crookston High School senior boys won the Volleyball championship with a 20-14 victory over the sophomores. The seniors also defeated the freshman class 27-13, and the sophomores defeated the juniors 20-18. After winning the championship, the senior class faced off against the CHS staff, where they pulled off a victory over them 22-13. The event ended with one final game with the Senior class boys against the CHS Girls’ Volleyball seniors, who defeated the boys 15-7.

Pictures of the Color Wars and Volleyball matches can be seen below-

Delores Smith Kurpius – Obit

Delores Smith Kurpius, 93, of Crookston, MN, passed away Saturday morning, October 1, 2022, at the Benedictine Living Community Crookston with family at her side.

Delores Mina Gullekson was born in Fertile, MN on June 23, 1929, 1 of 8 children of the union of Gordon and Mina (Kiltie) Gullekson. While growing up near Fertile she attended the Golden Beam, District 66, country school through the 8th grade and went on to the Fertile High School where she graduated with the Class of 1946. On January 17, 1947, Delores was united in marriage to Walter M. Smith. As their family grew to include 3 sons and 5 daughters they moved from Fertile to Rustad, MN, and then to Crookston in 1963. Delores was employed at Jiffy Fry until 1979 and then began working behind the counter at the Sweetheart Bread Store. Walter passed away on October 30, 1993, and Delores decided to retire and devote herself to her children and their families. As a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she enjoyed attending meetings and volunteering her time to help with the organization’s projects. Several years later while making her home in the Summerfield Apartments she met a new resident by the name of Edward Kurpius, who had moved from Ada, MN to be near his daughters, Connie and MaryJane. To quote one of his daughters, “the rest was history”. They were married on June 14, 2004, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston and enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon trip to Maui. Life was good and Delores was very happy to have Ed’s family warmly embrace her as part of their family, just as her family welcomed Ed. Sadly, he would pass away on March 21, 2015.

Delores continued to make her home in Summerfield, looking forward to frequent visits from her blended family. She filled her days doing embroidery, sewing, and cloth painting, and loved going to garage sales, shopping, and playing cards and bingo with friends. Delores was an ardent fan of the Minnesota Twins and was able to watch a game on television with her son, Scott, just 3 days before her passing. The Twins won and that made it a good day! She will be very fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family and many friends.

Delores is survived by 4 of her 8 children: Connie Smith of Crookston, Janie Ricord of Redwood Falls, MN, Tracy Smith of Crookston, and Scott Smith (Patrick Prochaska) of Minneapolis; 2 daughters-in-law, Eileen Smith of Langford, SD and Sharon Smith of Yuma, AZ; sons-in-law, Dennis LaFleur and John Helgaas of Crookston; 7 grandchildren: Nikki (Doug) Wick, Judd Smith, Jodi Enlow, Troy (Leisha) Smith, Seth Ricord, Nevin Ricord, and Kira Yates; 12 great-grandchildren: Dayton (Nicole) Wick, Josie Wick (Michael Thompson), Christopher (Ciara) Wick, Nathan Wick, Rowdy Smith, Race Smith, Brooke Clemenson, Megan Pierson, Anna Enlow, Casey Enlow, Jayda Ricord, and Talon Smith; 3 great-great-grandchildren: Ryatt Wick, Ransom Wick, and Westin Thompson; together with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

From Ed’s family Delores leaves 2 step-daughters, Connie Kurpius-Hannesson and MaryJane Kurpius-Brock, both of Crookston; and their families, including 6 grandchildren: Wendy (Scott) Berge, Darby (Beka) Miller, Jeanna Miller, Andrew (Tami) Miller, Larissa Kurpius-Brock, and Marinda Kurpius-Brock; and 8 great-grandchildren: Riley, Jacob (Evian), and Cole Miller, Alexia (Tim) Engle, Thomas and Brenna Berge, Kendra Strommen, and Brianna Miller; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Allyson Miller and Leo Berge; and extended family.

In addition to her beloved husbands, Walter and Edward; Delores was preceded in death by her sons, Kelly Smith and Monty Smith; daughters, Cindy LaFleur and Sherri Helgaas; grandsons: Jason Clemenson, Lance Smith, and Trent Smith: grandson-in-law, Will Enlow; and all of Delores’ siblings, brothers: Glen, Ken, Allan “Stub”, and Nick, and sisters: Afton, Faye and Roma. From Ed’s family she was preceded in death by 2 sons-in-law, Lee Hannesson and Bill Kurpius-Brock; his parents, Steve and Clara Kurpius; and all of Ed’s siblings, brothers: Joe, Ted, and Stanley, and sisters: Mamie, Lorraine, and Evangeline. May God richly bless the memory of Delores Smith Kurpius.

The funeral service celebrating Delores and her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2022, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston with The Rev. Greg Isaacson, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. The funeral will be live-streamed by going to her obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view. Interment will take place at the Little Norway Cemetery, rural Fertile, MN, where Delores will be buried next to Walter.

Messages of condolence may be offered to the family on the funeral home website.

President Biden vows to work with Governor DeSantis after meeting in Florida to survey Hurricane Ian damage

shutterstock_1374801944

President Joe Biden and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced their intention to work together to help the state rebuild after touring damage from Hurricane Ian on Wednesday afternoon. The two leaders momentarily put politics aside in response to the historic storm, which was one of Florida’s deadliest and costliest in decades after making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane.

Biden spoke with local residents affected by the storm, offering support to residents as he toured the damaged area filled with debris, fallen trees, downed electric lines and boats and yachts in piles. Speaking at a press conference in Fort Myers, Biden announced new relief efforts to help Florida residents and businesses rebuild.  Biden said: “Today, we have one job and only one job. That is to make sure the people of Florida get everything they need to fully recover.”

Biden and DeSantis said they spoke several times before and after the storm hit as Biden issued emergency declarations. DeSantis discussed the state’s cooperative efforts with the White House, noting that federal funds have been allocated to help his state recover from Ian: “I want to thank President Biden and Jill Biden as well as Administrator Deanne Criswell for coming down here looking at a really really significant damage here in Lee County and there’s other places where you have really significant damage as well outside of this general area. We were very fortunate to have good coordination with the White House and with FEMA from the very beginning of this.”

The president’s visit comes amid a rising death toll in Florida, and just two days after he traveled to Puerto Rico to survey Hurricane Fiona’s damage. In the wake of that storm, he announced he was sending tens of millions of dollars to help prepare the island for future storms.
