Officials confirmed that seven people were hospitalized in southern Missouri after an amusement park train derailed from its tracks. The seven individuals transported to nearby hospitals included six guests and one staff member at Silver Dollar City, a theme park in Branson near the Arkansas border.

Few details are known about the circumstances surrounding the accident, although the park said in a statement that the derailment occurred as the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train, one of its attractions, was completing its usual route. Silver Dollar City wrote in a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter: “Silver Dollar City confirmed that earlier this evening, sections of the Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train derailed from the track. Onsite paramedics provided emergency care until first responders arrived. Six guests and one employee have been transported by ambulance to nearby medical facilities. At this time, we are wholeheartedly focused on providing support for guests and team members in partnership with Stone County first responders. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

The Missouri Division of Fire Safety confirmed that personnel from its amusement park ride unit responded to the scene after the train derailed, and said an investigation into what caused the accident is underway.

Jan. 6 rioter who dragged D.C. Police Officer into crowd sentenced to 7.5 years in prison

shutterstock_1890490867

On Thursday, a Jan. 6 rioter who dragged former D.C. Police Officer Michael Fanone into the crowd on the steps of the U.S. Capitol was sentenced to 7.5 years in federal prison. 43-year-old Albuquerque Head from Tennessee was sentenced to 90 months in federal prison, one of the longest sentences to date in the Capitol riot cases. Head will get credit for the roughly 18 months he’s spent locked up already.

Head dragged Fanone into the mob on Jan. 6 while yelling “I got one!” and used a police shield to push against a line of police officers in the western-facing tunnel of the U.S. Capitol, where some of the most violent acts of the insurrection took place. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers. Fanone suffered a heart attack and traumatic brain injury in the Jan. 6 assault, and ended up resigning from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Fanone urged Judge Amy Berman Jackson to sentence Head to the maximum, saying that Head had cut his career in law enforcement short.  Judge Amy Berman Jackson called Head’s actions “some of the darkest acts committed on one of our nation’s darkest days.” She described former Officer Fanone as Head’s “prey” and his “trophy.” She also described Fanone as “protecting America” during the riot.

Fanone has testified before the Jan. 6 committee and recently wrote a book about the insurrection, but said the injuries he received has left him devastated that he lost his career in law enforcement:  “I would trade all of this attention to return to policing,” he said. “But I can’t do that.”

Henry Cavill set to return as Superman for future DC films

shutterstock_754537129

Henry Cavill posted to social media to share that he is “back as Superman” following his cameo in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam,” which opened last weekend to $140 million worldwide. The news comes after years of rumors and speculation about Superman’s long-awaited return to the DC Universe.

Cavill said in a video posted to his Instagram feed:“I wanted to wait until the weekend was over before posting this because I wanted to give you all a chance to watch ‘Black Adam.’  But now that plenty of you have, I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman.”  The 39-year-old actor added that what audiences saw in Black Adam is just a very small taste of things to come, but gave no further details. Cavill ended by thanking fans for their enthusiastic response to his return: “Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”

Cavill first originated his Superman nearly 10 years ago in 2013’s “Man of Steel” and has played the Son of Krypton just a handful of times since then: in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” 2017’s “Justice League,” 2021’s “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and a brief post-credits cameo in “Black Adam.”

CHEDA APPROVES CIVIL RIGHTS CERTIFICATION AND ANNUAL PHA ANNUAL PLAN

chedalogo-27

The Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) met for a Special meeting on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Valley Technology Park.

APPROVE PAYABLES

After the Call to Order, the board began the meeting by approving their October 26 to 31 CHEDA Checks for $46,064.25 and EFT Totalling $2,129.12 for a total of $48,193.37. They then began a motion to approve the November 1 CHEDA Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) Checks for $61,306.23. The board approved both motions; however, Kristie Jerde abstained her vote on both motions.

HOUSING

The board then began the first resolution to approve the 1-10-2022 Civil Rights Certification. Administrative Assistant Theresa Tahran explained that it was an annual certification the board had to renew for the year, but they had not changed it from their previous HUD plan from the year before. “It’s an annual certification and board resolution stating that we have our annual plan, and it’s a renewal from each year,” Tahran explained. “We’re a high performer, and it’s just a document we recertify each year.” The board approved the certification unanimously.

Compliance with PHA Annual Plan

The board then began another resolution of the 2-10-2022 Compliance with the PHA Annual Plan. Tahran explained it was a plan they had to do each year with a whole agency plan every five years, but this year they just needed to approve the annual plan. “Each year, we have to do a PHA plan. Every five years, we do a whole agency plan where we have a significant amendment and put in our five-year capital improvements,” Tahran explained. “This year is just an annual plan stating we’re in compliance with HUD.” The board approved the motion unanimously.

The next CHEDA meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 8, at 5:00 p.m. at Valley Technology Park.

CROOKSTON GRAND THEATRE HOLDING 10TH ANNUAL FREE HALLOWEEN MOVIE ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT

grand-theater1

To celebrate Halloween this year, the Crookston Grand Theatre is holding its 10th Annual Free Halloween Movie on Monday, October 31, where it will show two Halloween movies, one at 7:00 p.m. and the other at 9:30 p.m.

The theatre hasn’t revealed the movies they will show to keep them a surprise for the watchers, but the manager Bo Brorby has reported that both are relatively new movies that no one has seen on the big screen yet. The first movie will be a Family Halloween movie, showing at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Scary Halloween movie being shown at 9:30 p.m. for more mature audiences. With the movie, the theater will have its concession stand open with special deals available for the movie. “We always have some good specials on Halloween,” Brorby explained. “We’re going to have $2 ICEES along with our $2 popcorn, so even if you don’t come to the movie, you can feel free to stop in to get a nice Halloween special on our concessions.” Other available concessions include candy, soda, and more.

With the theme of Halloween, the theater is holding its annual Halloween costume contest for the children coming in from trick-or-treating, and the staff is giving awards to the best and most creative costumes they see. “We kind of have a rating schedule, we look at everyone’s costumes and look for the most creativity and uniqueness, and we can tell when some people put a lot of time into their costumes,” Brorby explained. “We have one family where they do an awesome face-painting on their costumes every year, and they usually win a prize, so we look at everyone’s costumes, and anyone we feel put in the effort can win.” The main winner will receive a $20 gift card to the Grand Theatre, but contestants can also win movie passes and smaller gift cards for their costumes.

With the school year in full swing and depending on the income of new movies, the theater has plans to hold more special and family movie events for the remainder of the year and even a bit into 2023. “Depending on our movie release schedule, we may hold another event in November, with a Thanksgiving-themed movie, depending on our release schedule,” Brorby explained. “But for sure, in December, we will have our free Christmas movie with Santa during one of the first weekends in December.” While the theatre doesn’t have any concrete dates yet, it is planning for other family movies and community events in the winter and spring.

The 10th Annual Free Halloween Movie event will be held in the Crookston Grand Theatre on Monday, October 31, with the family movie beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the scary movie playing at 9:30 p.m. Normal movie showtimes begin at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m., with many new family movies and other movies coming in over the next couple of weeks. If you would like to plan a private event at the Grand Theatre, you can call them at 218-281-1820.
