THE FIRST EVER CROOKSTON FIRST RESPONDER ACADEMY WILL BEGIN THIS WEEK

crookston-first-responders-academy-flyer

Crookston High School juniors and seniors and college students, ranging from ages 16 to 24, interested in joining the Crookston Fire Department or Crookston Ambulance can join the first-ever Crookston First Responder Academy. A 10-week program starting on Wednesday, October 5, and meeting every Wednesday until December 14 at the North Fire Station from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. to teach them about everyday emergency medical services and fire operations.

Each week, the students will receive lectures and hands-on learning experiences from volunteer firefighters, the Crookston Ambulance, and law enforcement officials on various subjects and operations that the Fire Department and EMS responders deal with daily. Some topics include fire behaviors, wildland fires, rescue operations, CPR, first aid, bleeding control, radio, and truck operations. “For each class period, they’ll have anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half of lecture and a half hour to an hour of hands-on lessons. For our first night, we’ll be covering basic operations of both fire and EMS, such as how we access our scenes and our patients and what a handover report would look like,” said Program Coordinator Brianna Holmer. “So, if I have to give a handover report to another first responder or hospital staff, we’d show what that would look like. We also cover how our scenes are even safe for us to be there and then familiarize them with our gear, our equipment that we typically use on an everyday basis, and how we do checks to make sure they’re in working order and all in the specs that they’re supposed to be.” Other subjects the students will learn will be to assess possible hazards at a scene, how to assess someone’s condition, and give them scenarios of what to do in certain situations. The students will also meet with law enforcement officials about how to help people with mental health conditions and the mental health of the volunteers and workers, and how they help EMS workers with their jobs.

The academy will run for ten weeks with the classes meeting every Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., with the final week of the course being a “fun week,” where the students can bring in a family member or friend to show what they learned and what they can apply to their everyday life. “Week 10 is going to be where they get to show what they learned and what they can apply to their everyday life. Like they can show their family how they can build a first aid kit, which is maybe not something you would think of because you think that you can buy a pre-made one that has some basic band-aids in it, but maybe you want to add more to that based on what you learned at the Academy. You can learn how to build a first aid kit for your vehicle, which not a lot of people might realize what you might want in that,” Holmer explained. “Or how to identify different fire hazards, as maybe people don’t know that you shouldn’t put these two things next to each other because they’re really dangerous, but we don’t think about that in our everyday life and how to read those fire hazard warning labels and what does each one of those stands for.”

Upon completing the Academy, the students will receive American Heart Association (AHA) CPR and First Aid Healthcare Provider cards that show that they completed the evaluations in accordance with the curriculum of the American Heart Association Basic Life Support Program and allow them to be a certified CPR and first aid provider in any healthcare or first responder avenue, or in emergencies in their everyday life. Holmer mentioned that the Academy would be a great way to help students become familiar with the department’s operations that they can use to help to continue pursuing a career as a first responder. “It will help with the fact that you’re familiar enough with it, so if you decide to go on for your Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or your EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), it helps you with that as you have that basic understanding and you know how things work already,” Holmer explained. “If you found out you love everything you did here, we’ll get you in contact with either the Crookston Ambulance instructors and get you lined up for their next class when they have one set up or with the Fire Department when they have their fire training going on for new recruits.”

The Academy currently has about 10-15 students signed up for it and registration is still open. Registration to the academy is free to all students, but the Academy requests that anyone wanting to join the academy contact Program Coordinator Brianna Holmer or Program Manager Ryan Tull to help them have an idea of how many students they have and the ratio between their instructors and gear they need to bring. However, they do welcome walk-ins on the first day but require you to have some form of student ID to prove you are a student that fits the age requirements. If you are under the age of 18, the student needs a parent or guardian to sign some paperwork at the station on the first day for liability purposes. The Academy has no maximum limit of students, so any interested students are welcome to join. The academy does require that the students have long hair pulled back to keep it out of their eyes, wear closed-toed shoes, and durable clothing for safety reasons.

The Crookston First Responder Academy will have its first class on Wednesday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the North Fire Station and will meet every week until December 14. To learn more about the academy or to register for it, you can contact Program Coordinator Brianna Holmer at bholmer@crookstonfirstresponderacademy.com or Program Manager Ryan Tull at rtull@crookstonfirstresponderacademy.com.

Sister Rosella Dentz – Obit

sr-rosella-dentz-photo

Sister Rosella Dentz, age 98, died on September 30, 2022, at Villa Saint Vincent, Crookston, MN.

Sister Rosella Dentz, the first of five children, was born September 5, 1924, into a loving, close, and strict Catholic family. She was baptized Rosella Julianna Dentz, in Saint Michael’s church, in Mahnomen, MN. Her parents were Germans from Stearns County, MN.

Rosella attended Saint Michael’s grade school until the school burned down and then spent three years at Mahnomen High School. She attended Cathedral High School in Crookston for her senior year while living at Mount Saint Benedict.

Rosella found it challenging to leave home, but she wanted to be a sister. The Benedictines who taught her in grade school inspired her. She wrote, “I loved the sisters very much, and this love was nurtured by my parents.”

Rosella entered the Mount Saint Benedict community on January 1, 1942, and made her final monastic profession on July 11, 1947. She described her feelings on that day, “When I made my final vows, I thought I was close to heaven. I felt free and that now I could stay in the convent. I wasn’t going to be sent home.”

Sister Rosella wrote, “What appeals to me now as a Crookston Benedictine is the family spirit which is so cheerful. I also like the spirit of prayerfulness. The Benedictine life is so ordinary.” When asked what she considered her most significant accomplishment, she replied. “My greatest accomplishment in the community is trying to be a good teacher, especially of first grade. Thinking back on her life, she wrote, “I am most grateful for the good parents God gave me and for my vocation.”

Sister Rosella graduated from Viterbo College in LaCrosse, WI, with a bachelor’s degree and taught for many years in the Minnesota communities of Red Lake Falls, Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, Barnesville, and Mahnomen, as well as in Asherton, Texas. She usually taught the lower grades, and former students fondly remember her warmth and playfulness and the gerbils she kept in her classroom. After retiring from classroom teaching, she participated in the Foster Grandparent program in Mahnomen.

Sister Rosella stated, “It was exciting to go on my first mission, which was Saint Joseph’s School in Red Lake Falls, MN. It became almost a second home to me. I was there for ten years. I taught grades one to three, but the first grade was my favorite grade to teach. I loved the little ones; they were so close to God.”

Sister Rosella is preceded in death by her parents, Albert J. and Odelia Clara (Laubach) Dentz, and her siblings Albert Jr., Gerald (June), Dolores (Gaylen) Nudell, and Mary Ann. She is survived by her sister-in-law, June, her nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of Saint Benedict.

Sister Rosella will be remembered at a prayer service at 11:00 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Services will be at Sacred Heart Chapel at Mount Saint Benedict, 620 Summit Avenue, Crookston. Interment will follow in the Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery.

Gifts in honor of Sister Rosella may be given to Mount Saint Benedict Foundation, 620 Summit Ave., Crookston, MN 56716.

The Mass will be livestreamed from www.stenshoelhouske.com by going to Sr. Rosella’s obituary page and clicking on the prompt to view.

CROOKSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY INVITES JAMES THOMASSON FOR AUTHOR TALK ON WEDNESDAY

lake-agassiz-regional-library-picture-19

The Crookston Public Library invites the public to an author talk featuring James Thomasson, author of “Sounds from the Last Outpost: Outhouse Limericks and Country Rhythms,” a book of poems and ink art about outhouses co-produced with artist Tom Tepper.

This author talk will include a discussion of the friendship between James Thomasson, the first Protestant theologian at Georgetown University, and Tom Tepper, who served as an architect of D.C. National landmarks. One is a poet; one likes to draw. Their book started with a poem by James about Tom’s outhouse on his land in rural Rappahannock County, Virginia, for which Tom drew a cartoon. Their labor of love began over 30 years ago, resulting in a book of clever poems and ink artwork called “Sounds from the Last Outpost: Outhouse Limericks and Country Rhythms.” Books will be available for signing and purchase.

The author talk will be held on Wednesday, October 5, at 2 p.m. at the Crookston Public Library, 110 N. Ash St.

At approximately 09:39 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2022, the Grand Forks Fire Department was dispatched to 3630 Gateway Drive, Simplot, for an ammonia leak.

With the assistance of Simplot employees, crews were able to locate the leak. After special HAZMAT suits for protection were used, entry to the facility was made, and the leak was controlled and stopped at 11:30 a.m. One employee was evaluated by Altru Paramedics on scene and released. No other injuries were reported. The leaking ammonia was confined to a room within the structure that had a ventilation system in place. No other danger existed to other structures or businesses.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING WEEK BEGINS ON MONDAY

homecoming-3

The Crookston High School’s Homecoming is this week, starting on Monday, October 3, and going until Friday, October 7, with each day having its own theme for the students to dress up and show their school spirit along with other activities they can partake in throughout the week.

To start the week off on Monday, the school will have “Jersey Day,” where students are encouraged to wear the jerseys of their favorite sports teams on any level (high school, college, or professional). But along with that, Monday will also hold the coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen, which will be held in the Crookston High School Auditorium at 1:00 p.m. The Homecoming King and Queen candidates are;

Queen Candidates: Libby Salentine, Stella Duden, Hannah Brouse, Carly Brown, and Abby Borowicz

King: Tanner Giese, Jaren Bailey, Jack Doda, T.J. Sanchez, and George Widman

Tuesday will be a new event for the school called “BBQ Dads vs. Soccer Moms,” where the students can dress up as fathers cooking a barbeque or like soccer/sports moms rooting for their children, with the best-dressed students getting a prize for their creativity. “We’ve heard it’s been done at a couple of other schools, and we thought we’d give that a try, and what I understand is that you can dress up as a BBQ dad with your apron and chef’s hat on. Then you have the soccer moms. You can dress up as a mom that cheers with whatever else they have,” Crookston High School Student Council Advisor Linda Morgan explained. “They’re going to have fun with that, and we’re doing something different with that this year. I’m going to have a gift for the 9th-12th graders, a boy and a girl, and I’ll have the teachers send me a name of who’s the best-dressed, where they’ll get a little prize. And Mr. Junkermeier, our Junior High Student Council member, will pick the winner for the graders.”

Wednesday will have a similar situation for the students dressing up, as the theme will be “Decades Day,” where the students get to dress themselves in outfits from any specific decade (the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc.) and will again give prizes to the two best-dressed students from 9th-12th grade and 7th-8th grade. The school will also follow its Early Out Schedule to complete all of their classes to have the students more involved with the activities during the day and hold their Power Puff Football games for the 9th through 12th-grade girls at 1:00 p.m. “Every day, we’re going to get all of our classes in, and first we’ll start at 1:00 p.m. with the 9th grade vs. the 12th-grade girls, and then we’ll have the 10th grade vs. the 11th-grade girls, and the final game will be whoever of those winners are for the championship,” Linda Morgan explained. “The girls have a blast with this, of course. We have a couple of boy coaches that coach each of the girls, and the girls all get their own T-shirts for their team.” While the Power Puff teams play each other, the other teams will be in a Dodgeball Tournament in the High School gymnasium, and the 7th-8th graders will watch the movie Minions in the High School Auditorium.

Thursday will be a classic favorite for the school with Color Wars Day, where each grade level will be assigned a certain color for them to wear. The 7th graders will wear green, the 8th graders will wear yellow, the 9th graders will wear red, the 10th graders will wear blue, the 11th graders will wear white, the 12th graders will wear black, and the staff will wear purple with pink lettering. With this, they’ll also get to dress up their hallways where their lockers are. However, the seniors will get to dress up the Commons area as well since their lockers are in a place where there’s not much action. After the students check into their classrooms at 8:15 a.m., they are invited into the gymnasium to play and watch the 9th-12th grade Boys play in Volleyball tournament between the classes, with the 7th-8th graders cheering in the stands. The winning class will then play against the school staff, and after that match, there will be one final game between the senior boys against the senior girls on the Volleyball team. After the games, classes will begin at 10:15 a.m., and the school will follow its Late Start Schedule until the end of the day. At the end of the day, the students will be required to tear down all of the decorations they put up at the start of the day.

To close out Homecoming Week, the school will follow its Assembly Schedule, where the classes will be shortened to 40 minutes each instead of 50, but in the morning, at 7:30 a.m., the Senior-high and Junior-high Student Council students will have Tattoo and Face painting for $1 in the High School Commons. The school will end the day at 2:30 p.m., where they’ll go into the High School gym for their Homecoming Pepfest. “That’s when we have more teams, and they get to do a little lip-synch contest. I’ve got about five groups doing that. I wanted to get it back, we haven’t done it for a few years, and I told the captains of these teams, “We need to do this to get this back a little bit more here, to get the PepFest going more,” Morgan explained. “Then we will have our senior athletes introduced, and that will get everybody going for the big game, which will start at 6:00 p.m. on that Friday night. The dance for the 9th-12th graders will start at 9:00 p.m. and go until midnight, with it being $10 per person.” The Homecoming Dance will feature the band, The Undertakers, providing the music for the dance with chaperons taking breathalyzer tests for the students.

We will have pictures of the students and all of the major events happening in Homecoming throughout the week, so stay tuned to kroxam.com for pictures and results of the week.

Crookston took an early 2-0 lead in the match with a second singles win from Abby Borowicz who won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.  The third doubles team also made quick work of their opponent as Morgan Nelson and Addie Fee won 6-2, 6-4.
Crookston swept the doubles matches with first doubles of Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson winning 6-2, 6-2, and Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clauson cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory for a 4-0 lead.
The final win came at fourth singles with Paige Abrahamson winning again with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.  Crookston lost two competitive matches at first and third singles.
