CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL GIVES SPIRITED SEND-OFF TO SECTION 8A GIRLS TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM

img-6889-542x420-1

The Crookston High School held the first of hopefully many send-offs for juniors Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson of the Crookston Pirates Girls Tennis team this morning before the girls were ready to leave for the Section 8A Girls Tennis Individual Championship starting tomorrow at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Students and teachers lined the halls to wish the girls good luck and well wishes. This is the second season in a row that the Pirates have sent individuals to the State Tournament, and both Winjum and Gunderson will be making a return appearance, this time as a doubles team.

Pirates coach Cody Brekken voiced his excitement for the girls being qualified for the tournament. “In the individual tournament, these two played really well throughout the whole tournament, only dropping eleven games in their three matches,” Coach Brekken explained. “They became doubles champions for the Section Tournament Individually and onto the State Tournament.” Coach Brekken also voiced his excitement for the school for recognizing them for such an accomplishment. “These send-offs are always huge moral support for the teams, and it’s a huge accomplishment to make it to a State Tournament,” Brekken explained. “It’s awesome to see the school recognize that and go that extra step to recognize any athletes that can get there, and it’ll be a fun time.” Winjum and Gunderson were also excited to see their school and classmates show them support and giving them the send-off, and felt ready to play some teams they hadn’t played in their regular season. “It’s always a lot tougher competition at the state level versus sections,” said Halle Winjum. “I know we can go out there and prove that we belong at State Tournament, but we have to be ready for anything. We’re not comfortable with these teams since we’ve never seen them, so they’re tough, but I think we can take them down and show them what we’ve got too,” said Emma Gunderson.

The girls will have their first match tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against St. James in the first round and will play a second game at 2:00 p.m. regardless of if they win or lose the first game. The girls and their coach hope to make it in time to see the Team Championship match playing tonight in Minneapolis. Stay tuned to KROX Radio and KROXAM.com for more updates on the Section 8A Girls Tennis Individual Championship results.

Top Trump aide Hope Hicks interviews with January 6 select committee

shutterstock_1913474197-3

Hope Hicks, who served as a top adviser to former President Donald Trump, is interviewing with the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Hicks previously had an “informal interview” with the committee, according to two separate sources, and was called back for a formal interview.

Hicks previously refused to answer questions about working for the president when she testified before lawmakers behind closed doors in 2019. The Jan. 6 committee declined to provide a comment or any additional details, and Hicks did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hicks served in multiple senior roles during Trump’s presidency, and was one of his closest confidantes in his White House. She left the White House six days after the Jan. 6 insurrection, on Jan. 12, after serving as a counselor to the president. She had previously served as White House communications director as well as director of strategic communications. Prior to her stints at the White House, Hicks worked for Trump’s presidential campaign, the Trump Organization and Ivanka Trump’s fashion brand.

The committee has sought to prove throughout its investigation and public hearings that various individuals surrounding Trump did not believe the election was stolen or in the former President’s election lies and told him so.

5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near San Jose, California

shutterstock_714451780

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday at 11:42 a.m. The quake was centered 9 miles east of Seven Trees and 12 miles east of San Jose, and was quickly followed by a 3.1 magnitude aftershock. The USGS called the quake the largest to strike since the 6.0 Napa quake in 2014 which damaged hundreds of buildings.

The quake was felt as far away as Salinas, Point Reyes and Stockton, with residents posting videos to social media of the shaking. At of press time there are no reports of any damage or injury from Tuesday’s quake. Public works employees are evaluating infrastructure for any possible damage. All trains for BART, Caltrain and VTA were stopped temporarily right after the quake as a precaution. They have since resumed operations.

Seismologists are warning residents there remains the chance of aftershocks, with the U.S. Geological Survey who predicted 10 to 15 aftershocks greater than 3.0 over the next week. The California Geological Survey tweeted Tuesday: “Additional shaking from aftershocks can be expected. We are continuing to monitor this region.”

Adidas cuts ties with Kanye West after recent antisemitic comments

shutterstock_477795043-1

On Tuesday, shoe company Adidas said it will be cutting ties with rapper Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) after his recent antisemitic comments in interviews and on social media.

Adidas said in a statement that it was ending production of Yeezy-branded products and stopping all payments to Ye and his companies. The company statement read in part: “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

The 45-year-old West was worth around $2 billion for his music and sneaker brand Yeezy, as well as his former partnership with Gap which ended recently. He has lost multiple sponsors after tweeting he wanted to go “death con 3” on Jewish people. Balenciaga stopped working with West, and JPMorgan Chase also severed ties with him.  Creative Artists Agency also dropped West as a client earlier this month.
