Herbert Elmer Swift, 96, of Crookston, MN, passed away at the Benedictine Living Community Crookston early Wednesday morning, November 2, 2022, with his family by his side.

Herb and his mirror image twin brother, Hubert, were born in DeLand, FL on May 4, 1926, to Thurman and Alma (Lunos) Swift. When they were just a few months old the family moved to rural Crookston. The Swift household would eventually grow to embrace 11 children. Herb was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston and attended Crookston schools. At the age of 16, he and Hubert moved to Chardon, OH where they continued their education.

Together the 2 boys left school during their senior year to enlist in the US Navy during WWII. Herb’s tour of duty included serving aboard the USS Cockrill, which sailed from the port at Sampson, NY and the USS Charleston, which was based at Portland, ME. At different times he participated in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters of Operations. Hubert served aboard the USS Warrington. Very sadly, Hubert perished when his ship sank during a hurricane in the Atlantic. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy on May 28, 1946, a grateful nation awarded Herb the US Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He went back to Ohio for a few years before returning to Crookston where he belatedly graduated from Central High School. He started working as a carpenter for local contractors and before long began courting a young lady named Elores Marie Swiers who had come to Crookston from the Bejou-Mahnomen, MN area to live and work. The two sweethearts were united in marriage on June 25, 1955, at the Christian Reformed Church in Bejou. Their union would be blessed by the births of daughter, Susan, and son, William. In 1963 came a brief move of several months to Montrose, CO while Herb worked on a construction project there. Upon returning to Crookston, he became a member of the local United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Union, headed by his brother, Hugh. Herb was a gifted carpenter who could do it all; whether it was the framing to begin the building process, crafting the millwork for the middle stages of construction, to completing all the exacting finish work that gave heart and perfection to the project. He was able to see a picture or have a description of something to build and he could create a version with his own special design. After retiring at 65 Herb worked with Tri-Valley for a few years, then joined his son, Bill, to work for Loren Richards Inc. of Moorhead doing groundskeeping for the American Crystal Sugar Company plants in northern Minnesota and North Dakota. Even as he celebrated his 90th birthday Herb wasn’t about to slow down. After Tammy, Bill’s significant other, bought a Jenny Lind crib, she asked Herb to divide it in two and create two identical benches, which he gladly did. Thus began a few years of his one-of-a-kind bench creating, which included corner benches, a rocker bench made from a queen size headboard, and many more. Each finished bench became one more project he would photograph to add to his “brag book”.

Herb was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church; and also held memberships in the UBC Union, Crookston American Legion Post 20, and was a life member of Crookston VFW Post 1902. He devoted his life to Elores and together they were extremely proud of their kids, and granddaughters, finding immense joy in their accomplishments and the wonderful people they have become.

Herb leaves to mourn his passing, Elores, his beloved wife of 67 years; their daughter, Susan Swift of Grand Forks, ND; son, William Swift and his significant other, Tammy Johnson, of East Grand Forks, MN; 2 granddaughters, Janessa Jade Joy and her fiancé, Alex Walton, of Minneapolis, and Cassidy Ann Joy of Myrtle Beach, SC; brother, Donald Swift of Hiram, OH; sister-in-law, Connie Swift of  Painesville, OH; a special person in his life who was more like a son, Kent Riendau of Crookston; and Ele’s boys with whom he was especially close: Hugh Jr., Ernie, Jim, Lyle, and Tom. Herb is also survived by the Swiers side of the family: brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Vernon and Gertrude Swiers of Dublin, CA, Calvin and Crystal Swiers of Fort Collins, CO, Doreen and Robert Gunderson of Mahnomen, MN, and Agnes Swiers of Detroit Lakes, MN; together with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Alma Swift; an infant grandson, Andrew Myron Moteberg; and 9 siblings including brothers: Hugh (Eleanore), Cecil (Helen), Donald (Geri), Sherman, Hubert, and Charles (Mona), and sisters: Sandra (Murray) Carver, Karen Graf, Ethel Swift, and Mary Lou Parmalee. From the Swiers family were his parents-in-law, Andrew and Hattie Swiers; brothers-in-law, Howard and Richard Swiers; and sister, Margaret Medd. Cherished be the memory of Herbert E. Swift.

A memorial service for Herb will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2022, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston with The Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. The funeral will be live-streamed by going to Herb’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view. Inurnment will take place in the Bejou Cemetery, Bejou, MN, at a later date. Messages of condolence to Elores and family may be offered on the funeral home website.

Indiana doctor who performed abortion on 10-year-old rape victim sues state Attorney General

shutterstock_1449337424-2

The Indiana doctor who provided an abortion to a 10-year-old rape victim is suing Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita for using what her attorneys say are “meritless” complaints to justify subpoenas for medical records.  AG Rokita attempted to gain access to the medical records from Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis, after a number of individuals filed complaints against Bernard that her attorneys call “frivolous.”  Lawyers for Bernard and her medical partner, Dr. Amy Caldwell, say Rokita filed “broad document subpoenas” to a hospital system for “the entire medical file” of the victim. The lawsuit alleges the complaints in question were without any legitimate basis.

The abortion case involving Dr. Bernard became national news after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, which allows for states to individually enact their own abortion laws. The 27-year-old Ohio man accused of raping and impregnating a 10-year-old girl, Gerson Fuentes, was denied bail after being charged with two counts of rape of a child under 13.  The lawsuit claims many of the complaints against Dr. Bernard were made by people who do not live in Indiana. There was also a complaint that Bernard failed to report the rape of the victim to the authorities, which was found to be untrue. Rokita issued a statement on July 14, which questioned whether Bernard reported. However, termination of parental rights forms confirmed Bernard properly reported the rape.

FBI warns of ‘credible and broad threat’ to New Jersey synagogues

shutterstock_1166694607

The FBI in New Jersey warned on Thursday that they were investigating a “credible and broad threat” to synagogues in the state, asking that they take security precautions to protect their communities and buildings.

Officials with the Newark FBI announced the threat in a statement and told the public to stay alert: “The FBI has received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ. We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility. We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement his office has been in contact with the state attorney general’s office, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the FBI: “We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected,”

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said in a statement Thursday his office has been in touch with federal partners and is also working with New Jersey State Police and law enforcement across the state to coordinate a response: “Some of these patrols will be in marked vehicles and others will not — but please do not be alarmed if you observe an increase in police presence as we are taking these steps in an abundance of caution. We also call upon New Jersey residents to be extra vigilant and if you see suspicious activity please report it to your local authorities without delay. We continue to work together to keep New Jersey safe, and let those who would bring harm to the residents of this State know that New Jersey will not be home to hate, intolerance or violence.”

CHEDA APPROVES GRANT TO BEGIN CHILDCARE STAFF TRAINING

chedalogo-28

The Crookston City Council and Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) met for a special meeting on Thursday morning inside the City Hall Council Chambers in the lower level of City Hall.

CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL REGULAR AGENDA

The only item on the City Council’s Regular Agenda was to approve the Special Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) meeting agenda for Thursday, November 3, at 7:15 a.m., which the council approved unanimously and then adjourned.

CHEDA CHILDCARE ACTION

The CHEDA board began their meeting to discuss an action plan for childcare. CHEDA Executive Director Karie Kirschbaum reported that she had met with future Childcare Center All4Learning Owner Stefanie Okroi to learn the issues for the Childcare Center and what they needed to get it operational. Okroi told her they needed certifications and CDAs for each of her staff, which she has been paying since last March, and Kirschbaum learned that CHEDA had set aside $15,000 allocated for childcare. “We went through her needs, and she only needed $425 for each of her six staff members and then have to complete an estimated 120 hours of schooling for childcare,” Kirschbaum explained. “So, this particular money that we’ve set aside today is up to $15,000, plus she has to pay wages for that, so once the employees have completed the certifications, the state will reimburse $425 from each and up to $600 per staff. When that’s reimbursed, we’ll put that back into the city funds to be reallocated to another childcare project.” The board then asked Okroi what the state’s status was on the state’s funds for the childcare action. She and Minnesota State District 1B Representative Deb Kiel reported that they had not received any word from the licenser about the progress of completing the regulations. “There are many different kinds of regulations that don’t make a lot of sense for a childcare center. My licenser is at times very hard to get a hold of, but we also need to get staff that are qualified in the state, where they have to have a CDA or an Early Childhood background,” Stefanie Okroi explained. “That has been a challenge with keeping that, but now that we have the funds to have my staff do the training is going to be an amazingly big push.” The board approved the grant unanimously.

The Crookston City Council will next meet on Monday, November 7, at 7:00 p.m. inside the City Hall Council Chambers, and the Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) will next meet on Tuesday, November 8, at 5:00 p.m. inside the Valley Technology Park.
