obituary_photo_for_allen_torpet-e1667495574948

Allen T. Torpet, 88, Fertile, MN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at his residence in Fertile, surrounded by family.

Allen was born in 1934 in Garfield Township in the house where his father was born. Allen attended eight years of country school a mile from his house, graduated from Fertile High School, and spent one year at Wahpeton State School of Science. His dad died when he was 21 and Allen moved home to farm and milk cows.

On a hunting trip to Saskatchewan, Allen met his wife, Elaine, and they were married in 1961. He began working for ASCS and worked as a carpenter with his Uncle Edward and best friend, Dickie. Allen started as a substitute mail carrier and became a regular carrier, delivering mail for 27 years. Allen had been retired for 28 years – he said it was “the best job he ever had!” After retirement, Allen moved off the farm, dispersing his herd of Red Polled cattle with a bloodline of over 100 years, which he had maintained from his grandfather’s herd.

Allen always had a passion for hunting and fishing and was an avid outdoorsman, often accompanied by one of his black labs. He started fishing in Little Andrew when he was eight years old and spent 30 years fishing at Buffalo Bay, Manitoba, although spearfishing for whitefish was always his favorite. Allen had 70 years of whitetail hunting in Minnesota and also hunted and fished in many other states and provinces. Among the highlights were salmon and halibut fishing and caribou hunting in Alaska with his cousin and an elk hunt and salmon fishing in Montana with his uncle. Allen was involved with the Fertile Rifle Club/Conservation Club and was so pleased to see them have a permanent home for the trap and rifle range so others can enjoy these great sports.

Allen was a lifetime member of Concordia Church and was dedicated to serving his community. He held a number of offices and worked on many projects including Polk County DFL Chairman, County Committeeman for East Polk County, President of Polk County Farmer’s Union, and served 42 years on the Garfield Township Board.

One of the highlights of Allen’s life was having his family with him to visit his family in Norway.  He was grateful to meet his great-grandson and liked telling people Easton was the seventh generation of the Torpet family in this country.

Allen and Elaine belonged to square dancing clubs and enjoyed the music and always treasured the friends they made while dancing. Allen appreciated a good glass of scotch, enjoyed playing cribbage and whist with friends, and looked forward to his nightly game of gin rummy with Elaine.

Allen loved his family well and was proud of his two kids and grandkids, spending many winters in Reno. Allen had many good friends through the years, and was known for his storytelling, sense of humor, and quick wit.

Allen had a life well lived.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Sophus and Nellie (Berg) Torpet. He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Elaine; son, Todd; daughter, Terry (David) Vasenden; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Al) Mackay who was raised in the Torpet home; grandchildren, Bjorn (Janelle) Vasenden and Sophia (Brendan) Cargill; great-grandson, Easton Cargill; sister-in-law, Darlene Brown; niece, Jackie Murray; and nephews, Stuart (Jane) Brown, Travis (Katelyn) Mackay, and Tyler (Shannon) Mackay.

Isabel Maxine (Gramer) Tronson – Obit

isabel_tronson_photo-e1667489515440

Isabel Maxine (Gramer) Tronson passed away on October 1, 2022, surrounded by family, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, MN.  She was born on June 3, 1929, to Harold and Agnes (Strand) Gramer originally of Crookston.  Isabel was raised by her grandparents, Richard and Karoline Strand following the death of her mother in 1930.

Isabel always took joy in the simple pleasures of life. During her school years, Isabel loved to recite poetry, play music, and share in the company of her friends, many of whom remained her friends throughout her life. On August 24, 1947, she married her best friend, Walt Tronson. Walt built the couple a little, yellow house on Nelson Street where the couple lived for many years with daughters Jennifer, Janna, and Jacalyn. The family later moved to Hubbard Street where they welcomed another daughter, Joan. While many people love moving to new venues, Isabel was proud to say she lived most of her years in Sampson’s addition.

Isabel’s gentle spirit and sociable nature led her to be very involved in school activities as a PTA Room Mother, as a Trinity Church Basement Lady and in delivering toast and juice to patients as a RiverView same-day surgery volunteer. Those who knew her well also knew that she could be passionate about politics. Her childhood home on Minnesota Street was an official polling place and Isabel was proud to have served as an election judge for many years.  The highlight of her political work was meeting Hubert Humphrey, however, his visit moved to second place after her opportunity to meet the King of Norway during his visit to the U.S. in her later years.

Her formal work life was spent giving to others as well, first being a “second mom” to many children as a licensed daycare provider for 10 years and then in her role in the dietary department of RiverView Hospital where she worked until her retirement. Isabel was an avid knitter, sharing her love of knitting by transforming miles of yarn into hats for new babies; booties for pastors to bring to their newest church members, and blankets for the Linus Project and the crisis program.

Isabel’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends drinking coffee, playing cards and games, having picnics, and enjoying special occasions. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she was known for her themed open houses, proudly featured once in the Grand Forks Herald.  Both she and Walt lost their parents at a young age and made it their mission to cherish their time with each other and their family. A special moment for Isabel was renewing her vows with Walt on her 50th wedding anniversary in Carmel, CA with her four daughters serving as bridesmaids. Eldest grandson, Trevor, held the honor of dancing with grandma to the couple’s theme song “Sentimental Reasons” by Nat King Cole as grandpa’s Parkinson’s prevented him from dancing with his bride.

Left to carry on her legacy of love are daughters: Jennifer Hegranes; Jackie (Philip) Bertils; and Joan Tronson. Grandchildren: Trevor (Stacy) Hegranes; Chenoa (Jodi) Buck-Gritzmacher; Melinda (Peter) Eberle; Cole (Kelli) Bertils; Bianca D’Amato (Tyler Shaver); Marco Porraz (Eden Young); and Ava Lopez. Great-Grandchildren: Tearle (Kaitlyn) Buck; Jared (Emma) Buck; Nicholas Buck; Mahlah Eberle; Laura Eberle; Pyper Buck; Maya Morgan-D’Amato, Dylan Buck, Peyton Krenzel; Cassidy Hegranes; Rafe Krenzel; Eli Porraz, Annalise Porraz, Nolan Bertils, Charlize Porraz and Julian Bertils. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Mary Gramer, Harold (Buddy) Gramer and Gloria (Gramer) Hannah; husband, Walt (2011); daughter, Janna (2005); grandchildren: Amy and Joshua Hegranes; and great-grandchild: Bodhi Billing.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation one hour preceding the service. The service will be live-streamed and may be viewed by connecting to Isabel’s obituary on the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home website (www.stenshoelhouske.com).

HAPPY JOE’S AWARDS BROOKE PANZER “HEAD COACH OF THE YEAR”

brooke-panzer-coach-of-the-year

Out of over 50 Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream restaurants across the nation, Crookston’s Happy Joe’s General Manager or “Head Coach” Brooke Panzer was chosen to receive the Head Coach of the Year award for all of her hard work for the restaurant.

Panzer began working for the Happy Joe’s here in Crookston in November of 2015 as the Shift Manager for one year before being promoted to become Assistant Manager. She soon became the General Manager in 2017 and continued working there after Jake Fee and Elle Koepp took over ownership in 2019. Panzer is a very hands-on worker, as she schedules other workers’ shifts, places orders, makes pizzas, runs the buffet, hires and interviews staff, checks the inventory of the restaurant every month, staff training for Shift Managers and regular staff, cleans dishes, makes deliveries, and even makes the bank deposits for the restaurant! When she’s not at the restaurant, she spends her free time walking her dog, Butter, with her fiancé Todd and eating out at the restaurants in the community.

During her time as the General Manager, Panzer played a significant component for Happy Joe’s during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. While the pandemic did impact the restaurant by making them close sections of the restaurant, Panzer worked to keep the restaurant afloat and make sure Crookston got fresh pizza. “We do a ton of dine-in, and a lot of our business is birthday parties and the game room. During COVID, we had to shut down the game room, the dine-in area, and our buffet. So, we had to think of different ways to attract other businesses, so we tried to go hard on advertising for delivery and pick-up and a lot of contactless delivery,” Panzer explained. “We were really successful, though we had to trim down our staff, which was hard to do, just to make things profitable. We ran the store with 12 employees and really marketed to the community for pick-up and delivery.” With the end of the pandemic, Panzer has worked to find and hire employees to restaff the restaurant back to nearly the amount of employees it had before the pandemic began.

Co-owner Jake Fee was thrilled to nominate Panzer for the award and traveled with them to the Bally’s Hotel & Casino for Happy Joe’s Annual Meeting in the Quad Cities, Illinois, from October 16 to the 18, where she received her award. “Basically, all of the nominations are in the running each and every year, and she was then brought down to a select few, and then she was awarded it,” Jake Fee explained. “The fun part was we were able to bring her with us to Illinois for the annual conference, so it was a pretty big surprise to her, but it wasn’t as much for us because we all know how much she deserves that award. We’re so happy for her that she got to accept the award in person, and we couldn’t be happier to have Brooke running the store here in Crookston.”

Panzer says she plans to continue working at Happy Joe’s and is excited to keep working to bring back the staff and the rest of the restaurant to its full glory before the pandemic. “I plan on staying at Happy Joe’s, I really love my job and position here, and everything that Jake and Elle are doing with the business is going in a good direction,” said Panzer. “We’re just trying to build back the staff and train them to satisfy the guests the best we can. We’re trying to make our buffet the best it can be and really attract everyone with their birthday parties and bring our game room back to how it used to be.” Panzer noted that the restaurant is looking to add newer games, prizes, and other updates to the game room, with one being a new ticket counter being added.

Federal Reserve hikes interest rates another 0.75 percentage point

shutterstock_1324096883

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by another 0.75 percentage point — or 75 basis points — citing continuing upward pressure on inflation as the reason. The Fed said in a statement: “Inflation remains elevated, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher food and energy prices, and broader price pressures …As a result, it anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to 2% over time.”

The Fed said that recent indicators point to modest growth in spending and production. Job gains have been robust in recent months, and the unemployment rate has remained low. They added that Russia’s war in Ukraine is “causing tremendous human and economic hardship” and the war, together with related events, is creating additional upward pressure on inflation.

Wednesday’s hike is the fourth consecutive 75-basis-point hike this year and would bring the federal funds rate to the range of 3.74% to 4%. The Fed said it will continue to closely monitor economic conditions and is “strongly committed to returning inflation to 2%. The last interest rate hike by the Fed was in September.

U.S. stocks opened lower Wednesday in anticipation of the Fed interest rate hike announcement.

Parkland school shooter sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole

shutterstock_1312491251

The gunman who murdered 17 people at a Florida high school was formally sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After a months-long trial, a jury in October recommended Nikolas Cruz, 24, be sentenced to life in prison for the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he killed 14 students and three school staff members

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer sentenced Cruz  to serve a life sentence with no possibility of parole for each of the 17 counts of murder to which he had pleaded guilty, with the sentences to run consecutively. Scherer also imposed a sentence of life in prison with a minimum of 20 years to serve on 14 of the 17 counts of attempted murder, and life without the possibility of parole for the remaining three counts of attempted murder.

Last month, in a 9-3 vote, a jury leaned toward sending Cruz to death row, but Florida law dictates that anything less than a unanimous vote automatically shifts the sentence to life without parole. Ahead of the sentencing, survivors and families of those killed in the Parkland shooting made victim-impact statements. For two days, parents, wives, siblings and other relatives of slain victims and some of the surviving wounded addressed Cruz face to face.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, while the defense had asked for life in prison. The jury’s decision on Oct. 13 shocked family members of victims who were visibly distraught by the verdict. During the the three-month penalty trial, the defense argued that Cruz is mentally ill and his condition led him to the 2018 Valentine’s Day rampage in which he wielded a semi-automatic rifle at his former school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Cruz will be taken within days to the Florida Department of Corrections, before he is assigned to a maximum-security prison in the state.
