Lupita Nyong’o to star in ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’

shutterstock_1806363172

Lupita Nyong’o is set to star in the new film A Quiet Place: Day One. Nyong’o, 39, is in final talks for the ‘A Quiet Place’ spinoff at Paramount.

Day One is based on an idea by John Krasinski, who directed and starred in the first two ‘A Quiet Place’ films. The spinoff will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for his directorial debut, ‘Pig’. Krasinski and his wife, actress Emily Blunt, are not expected to reprise their roles from the first two films. In addition to the spinoff, there is a third film in the Quiet Place series slated for release in 2025.

The original A Quiet Place opened in 2018 and was followed by A Quiet Place Part II in 2021. The franchise takes place in a post-apocalyptic world populated with monsters with hypersensitive hearing.

Last week I picked the area Section Football semi-final games to perfection except for the Warren-A-O and Goodridge-Grgyla game.  I was 9-1 so the High School Football swami is going to try a crack at the five area section championships.

SECTION 8AA Championship –

SEMI-FINAL 1
Crookston (5-5) will take on Barnesville (9-0) on Friday night at the Fargodome.
Crookston lost to Barnesville 28-0 in week two of the season and the Pirates played a great first half.  Crookston turned the ball over in back-to-back possessions in the third quarter and next thing you know Barnesville scored two touchdowns off the turnovers and game was over.
Barnesville will be the HEAVY favorite in the game and not only are they the favorite to win the section championship, but they are also one of the favorites to win the STATE championship.  They dominated the Crookston offense and shut down Crookston’s running game.  If Crookston can run the ball it could be a somewhat competitive game.  Crookston has confidence, they have nothing to lose because they are supposed to lose this game.
I will have to pick against my heart and go Barnesville by 30.

SECTION 8A Championship –

Red Lake County (8-2) takes on Mahnomen-Waubun (8-1).  The last time the teams met, Mahnomen-Waubun was a two-point conversion better the Red Lake County.  This time, I am predicting Red Lake County wins by 10 points behind a solid performance by the Rebels.

SECTION 8 9-MAN Championship –

Goodridge-Grygla (8-2) takes on Kittson County Central (10-0).  This could be interesting, but I think Kittson County Central is playing so well, they have so many weapons, and I will have to go with KCC to win by 20.

SECTION 6 9-MAN SEMI-FINALS –

SEMI-FINAL 1 –
Fertile-Beltrami (9-0) takes on Blackduck (8-2).  Blackduck has been playing some solid football lately, but Fertile-Beltrami is more explosive on the offensive side this year and will be tough on the turf.  Fertile-Beltrami to win by 30.

SECTION 8AAA SEMI-FINALS –

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (9-0) takes on East Grand Forks (6-4).  DGF needed a late game touchdown to beat Thief River Falls and I think East Grand Forks, a team that is used to playing on turf, will pull off the upset and win by 10.

— — —

The Section 8AA Volleyball championship is set with East Grand Forks beating Roseau 3-0 and Barnesville beating Hawley 3-1.
East Grand Forks is playing really good volleyball right now and have made tremendous improvement as the season has progressed.  They are a well-balanced team and everyone on the floor can hurt you.

Barnesville has been solid all season long and beat Hawley 3-1 in the semi-finals and are rolling.  Barnesville beat East Grand Forks 3-1 in one of the first matches of the season for both teams.  The match was in Barnesville.

The championship match will be played at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton because it is a neutral site.
BUT, East Grand Forks to Glyndon is 86 miles.
Barnesville to Glyndon is 20.4 miles.
A difference of an hour of driving.  If I was EGF, I would protest and have it moved a little closer to the middle.  But, they won’t because they aren’t petty like I am.

— — —

The Section 8A Volleyball championship match is set with Lake of the Woods taking on Badger-Greenbush-Middle River.  This should be a great match at UMC on Friday night.
BGMR beat LOW 3-1 on September 27 and I am guessing BGMR will win again, but I am predicting a 3-2 score.
Here is an interesting stat, LOW beat East Grand Forks and Barnesville this year.

JOKES

A man and a woman who have never met before find themselves in the same sleeping carriage of a train. After the initial embarrassment, they both go to sleep, the man on the top bunk, and the woman on the lower.

In the middle of the night, the man leans over, wakes the woman, and says, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m awfully cold and I was wondering if you could possibly get me another blanket?”

The woman leans out and, with a glint in her eye, says, ” I have a better idea, just for tonight, let’s make pretend that we’re married.”

The man says happily, “OK!” AWESOME!”

The woman says, “GOOD ….get your own damn blanket!!!”

— —

After 35 years of marriage, a husband and wife came for counseling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the years they had been married.
On and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured.
Finally, after allowing this for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he embraced and kissed her long and passionately as her husband watched – with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze.
The therapist turned to the husband and said, ‘This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you do this?’
‘Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I golf.’

There was this gas station in “redneck country” trying to increase it’s sales, so the owner put up a sign saying “Free Sex with Fill-up.”
Soon a “redneck” customer pulled in, filled his tank, and then asked for his free sex.

The owner told him to pick a number from (1) to (10), and if he guessed correctly, he would get his free sex. The buyer then guessed (8) and the proprietor said, “No, you were close. The number was (7). Sorry, no free sex this time but maybe next time”.

Some time thereafter, the same man, along with his buddy this time, pulled in again for a fill-up, and again he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again gave him the same story and asked him to guess the correct number. The man guessed (2) this time, and the proprietor said, “Sorry, it was (3). You were close but no free sex this time”.

As they were driving away, the driver said to his buddy, “I think that game is rigged and he doesn’t give away free sex”. The buddy replied, “No, it’s not rigged — my wife won twice last week.”

It was George the Mailman’s last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route, he was greeted by the whole family who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a tidy gift envelope.
At the second house, they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures.
At the fourth house, he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful blonde woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, which she closed behind him, and took him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced.
When he had enough, they went downstairs and she fixed him a giant breakfast: eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. When he was truly satisfied, she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under the cup’s bottom edge. “All this was just too wonderful for words,” he said, “But what’s the dollar for?”
“Well,” she said, “Last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you. He said, ‘Screw him. Give him a dollar.’ The breakfast was my idea.”

OPERATION GREEN LIGHT WILL GO INTO ACTION NEXT WEEK

polk-county-veterans-services

On Tuesday, October 4, Polk County Veterans Service Officer Kurt Ellefson approached the Polk County Board of Commissioners to approve the county’s participation in a nationwide initiative known as “Operation Green Light,” which will go into action on the week of Veteran’s Day (November 7-13) to honor veterans for their service.

To show its support, the county will illuminate all of the county flag poles at their government buildings (the Polk County Government Center, Highway Department, Justice Center, and the Law Enforcement Center) with green lights during the nights during the week. Along with the government buildings, the county is encouraging residents and local businesses to participate in the event by displaying a green light in and around their buildings. “We encourage residents and businesses to change at least one lightbulb in their house or outside their businesses, which can be an exterior or interior lights, whatever sparks conversations with your friends,” Kurt Ellefson explained. “Basically, to honor veterans for the week of Veteran’s Day, November 7 through the 13. If you already have a green light, you can leave it on all year round if you want to support veterans as well.”

The National Association of Counties introduced the event, with the National County Veteran Service Officer Association collaborating back in July to shine a light on the plight of veterans in counties across the county who are having a hard time connecting with benefits after their service. The program has been promoted and approved by several counties across the nation to show their support during Veteran’s Day Week, and many more are looking to join the movement next year. “I believe at the CVSO office, I’m one of the three doing it this year,” Ellefson explained. “But we did have a meeting a couple of weeks ago where we talked about it, and there are a lot of other counties that are going to get on board for next year as well.”

If you wish to show your support at your home or business for the week of Veteran’s Day, you can purchase green light bulbs at your local hardware or general stores or create them by covering a lightbulb with some green film to make it green. Ellefson also says that support doesn’t have to stop at just green lights, as people can show their support in a variety of ways in their homes or businesses. “Anything green or just a sign that says, “Thank you, Veterans,” any small thing. When you do things like that, especially out in your community, say you put a sign near your front porch, you don’t know who will go by there,” Ellefson explained. “It could be ten veterans or a veteran that’s never been thanked for their service who’s going to see that, and that makes their day or their year, so it means a lot.”

The Operation will begin next week, on the week of Veteran’s Day, November 7 to the 13. If you are looking for a lightbulb for your house or business, you can pick up a free lightbulb per household at the Crookston Chamber Office at 103 S Broadway during business hours, or you can go to Walmart.com to purchase some green lights as well. You can also share your participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

Athlete of the Week – Hunter Knutson & Jesus Sanchez Jr.

athlete-of-the-week

This week’s Athletes of the week are Crookston Pirate senior football players Hunter Knutson and Jesus Sanchez Jr. The two have helped lead the Pirates up front on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball and are a big reason why the Pirates are going back to the Section Championship on Friday night for the first time since 2004.

Jesus Sanchez Jr., and Hunter Knutson

Hunter Knutson as mentioned before is a senior but has taken over the Center spot on the offensive line just this year. “Hunter has done a fantastic job of stepping into the Center role on the offensive line.  He has been a solid, dependable force up front for us on both sides of the ball,” said Pirates coach Nate Lubarski. “Hunter is a smart, strong, aggressive player who has also become an excellent leader for our team.

On the defensive side of the ball, Knutson has also helped wreak havoc in the backfield and even scored a TD on a scoop and score in a game against Frazee earlier this year. The Pirates defense has held their opponents to just 20 points in the two section tournament games so far, and defense will be a big key in their game against the Barnesville Trojans on Friday night. “Reaching this point was definitely a goal we’ve had in mind,” said Knutson. “I think if we play like we can we have a great chance to go win the game.”

Jesus Sanchez Jr. has also played on both sides of the ball, specifically helping Crookston get into the backfield in the Barnesville game earlier this year, slowing down the high-powered Trojans offense. “Jesus is a quiet player who comes to work and learns each day.  He has gotten better at playing the offensive guard spot each week,” said Pirates coach Nate Lubarski. “Jesus goes about his business, works at doing his job, and is a very coachable player.”

Like Knutson, Sanchez and the rest of the Pirates believe if they play hard and like they’re capable of, they can upset the Barnesville Trojans on Friday night. “It’s pretty cool that this is the first time we’ve made it this far in 18 years,” said Sanchez. “I’m hopeful that it motivates us and leads us in a way to take it all the way to State.”

The Pirates will take on the Barnesville Trojans in the Section 8AA Championship on Friday night from the Fargo Dome. The kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. and we will carry the game on the air and on the KROX Livestream starting with the RiverView Health pregame show at 7:20 p.m.

MINNESOTA DNR ISSUES BURNING RESTRICTIONS DUE TO DRY CONDITIONS

minnesota-department-of-natural-resources-12

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is restricting open burning due to increased wildfire risk from dry conditions across much of Minnesota. The burning restrictions apply in the following counties:

Aitkin, Anoka, Becker, Beltrami, Benton, Big Stone, Blue Earth, Brown, Carlton, Carver, Cass, Chippewa, Chisago, Clay, Clearwater, Cottonwood, Crow Wing, Dakota, Dodge, Douglas, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Grant, Hennepin, Houston, Hubbard, Isanti, Itasca, Jackson, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Kittson, Koochiching, Lac Qui Parle, Lake of the Woods, Le Sueur, Lincoln, Lyon, Mahnomen, Marshall, Martin, McLeod, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Mower, Murray, Nicollet, Nobles, Norman, Olmstead, Otter Tail, Pennington, Pine, Pipestone, Polk, Pope, Ramsey, Red Lake, Redwood, Renville, Rice, Rock, Roseau, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Southern St. Louis, Stearns, Steele, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Traverse, Wabasha, Wadena, Waseca, Washington, Watonwan, Wilkin, Winona, Wright, Yellow Medicine.

The DNR will not issue permits for open burning of brush or yard waste in these counties until the burning restrictions are lifted. Residents should also take care with backyard campfires.

“Extreme drought conditions in combination with dry fall vegetation, low humidity, and wind make for dangerous fire conditions,” said Allissa Reynolds, DNR wildfire prevention supervisor. “Restricting open burning prevents a burn pile from escaping and becoming a wildfire.”

Burning restrictions will be adjusted as conditions change. For more information and daily updates on current fire risks and open burning restrictions, visit the statewide fire danger and burning restrictions page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/BurnRestrictions).

Duane J. Fealy – Obit

duane_fealy_-_obituary_photo

Duane J. Fealy was born on March 6, 1935 to Judd and Rose (Payment) Fealy near Mentor, MN. He grew up and attended school in Erskine, MN. Duane became a surveyor and worked for Hastad Engineering located in Halstad, MN. In 1957, Duane joined the US Army and served both in active duty and in the reserves for nearly 4 years. Much of his time in the Army was spent in Alaska. When Duane returned, he married Ruth Vollen with which he had four children; Grant, Deborah, Greg, and Deann. It was during these years Duane started his commendable 38 year long career as a District Representative with Garden Valley Telephone Company. He often spoke of the many great people he was able to serve and had many fond recollections over the years.

Duane met the love of his life, Sharon Degerness, and they married on October 5, 1991. Duane and Sharon shared many activities over their 38 years of marriage including camping in the fall, tending to their gardens, and enjoying each other’s company under a shade tree or in their gazebo. They enjoyed many beautiful creations at their home which included a lovely flower garden, impressive vegetable garden, and many of the best raspberry bushes and strawberry plants that were coveted by friends and neighbors.

Duane was a very talented man and could accomplish anything he put his mind to. He rarely asked for help or paid to have something done for him. He put his talents to very good use building many things in his own home and making a makeshift vehicle for the kids first car. Duane was generous with his talents. For those that knew him best understood his willingness to help others freely. Duane loved woodworking in his shop and creating keepsakes; many times, from wood harvested off his property. Duane was an outstanding outdoorsman. He loved to live off the land, hunt, and fish for his food. For many years he would trap as another source of income. He had a true respect for nature and one of his favorite activities during a great portion of his life was cutting and splitting wood to heat his home in the winter…. You can even ask the grouse that would keep him company while doing so!

Duane passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 29th at the Halstad Living Center in Halstad, MN at the age of 87.

Duane is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Fealy of Halstad, MN; children, Grant Fealy (Raylene) of Colorado Springs, CO, Deb Sande (Sean) of Horace, ND, Dee Fealy of Fargo, ND, Lori DeLong ( Jay) of Halstad, MN, Joni Page (Jim) of Beltrami, MN, and Joel Degerness ( Jennifer) of Arthur, ND; siblings, Delores Syverson, Fosston, MN, Elaine (Warren) Ohren, Fosston, MN, and Lee Schaller, Bolingbrook, IL; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

POLK COUNTY ANNOUNCES IT WILL TAKE PART IN ‘OPERATION GREEN LIGHT’ IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL VETERANS

polk-county-veterans-services-2

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Polk County announced that the county buildings would be illuminating their flag poles green from November 7 through the 13 as part of Operation Green Light. A new national collaborative initiative of the National Association of Counties (NACo) to support military veterans, raise awareness about the unique challenges many veterans face, and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

The new national collaborative is spearheaded by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers, building upon the successful efforts of the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021.

“Since the tragedy of September 11, 2001, our nation’s voluntary military force members, and their families, have made immense sacrifices for our safety and security over a two-decade period,” said Polk County Veterans Service Officer Kurtis Ellefson. “Similar to the sacrifices of previous generations of our armed forces, this service to the country also often results in significant stress to many of the veterans who served in times of war and conflict. We want to make sure our veterans and their families know that their service mattered, that we are grateful for their sacrifices, and that it is now our turn to make sure they are served by their county government and our community.”

In addition to lighting county buildings’ flag poles green, residents, and businesses are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends.

By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported. While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (November 7-13), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round. Residents can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

“Operation Green Light is a simple way to express our collective appreciation for the public service of our veterans,” said NACo President Denise Winfrey. “We encourage everyone to join us in displaying a green light for our veterans and to reflect on how we, as a nation and at the county level, assist our military service personal back into civilian life upon completing their service to our country.”

Visit naco.org/operationgreenlight and/or www.co.polk.mn.us/370/veterans-services for more information and links to resources available to veterans.

EAST GRAND FORKS FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPOND TO TWO FIRES IN RURAL EAST GRAND FORKS

sddefault-64

On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 3:06 p.m., the East Grand Forks Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a grass fire that was nearing some buildings at 14469 410th Ave SW, rural East Grand Forks. Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a bus and three cars on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, and an extensive overhaul had to be completed as the fire did get into the woods on the property. No injuries were reported. The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

While still on scene at 3:59 p.m., the East Grand Forks Fire Department was dispatched to a barn on fire at 22545 417th Ave SW, rural East Grand Forks. Fire crews arrived on the scene to find two outbuildings, and their contents had been destroyed, and the fire was nearing a third outbuilding on the property. Crews were able to save all remaining building on the property. An extensive overhaul had to be completed as the fire did get into the woods on this property as well. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was a burn pile that had been light three days prior that had rekindled and caught nearby grass on fire. The grass led to the outbuildings and woods that caught on fire.

East Grand Forks Fire was assisted on the scene by Fisher Fire Department, Crookston Fire Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Altru Ambulance, and Grand Forks Fire Dept.

The East Grand Forks Fire Department reminds people to use caution when burning in the dry conditions that we are currently experiencing.
