FHB DIDN’T IMPRACT GRAIN YIELD AND QUALITY FOR MOST GROWERS ACCORDING TO STUDY

us-wheat-and-barley-scab-initiative-logo

The U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI) is pleased to announce the publishing of its 2022 Fusarium Head Blight Disease Impact Update. This year commentary from experts in 31 states indicated most regions experienced hot and dry conditions which were unfavorable for the development of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB, also known as scab). Thus, FHB did not impact grain yield and quality for most growers. A few isolated problems arose with FHB in areas where rainfall and high humidity levels coincided with heading and flowering. But in most cases, growers that were proactive with fungicide applications were able to mitigate their risk.

“The USWBSI Fusarium Head Blight Disease Impact Update is a valuable annual overview of the impact of FHB on small grains crops and also serves to monitor the production conditions that U.S. wheat and barley growers experienced throughout the year” noted Ruth Dill-Macky, USWBSI Research Co-Chair. “Growers and researchers alike rely on this information to plan research in the years to come, identify production issues that might need attention, and to help validate tools used to mitigate FHB including the Fusarium Risk Tool, fungicides, and crop varieties with improved levels of resistance.”

The Fusarium Head Blight Disease Impact Update provides an annual report of the crop growing conditions as well as the impact of FHB on wheat and barley in different regions of the United States. Additionally, photos from the different growing regions have been included to highlight specific crop conditions. The USWBSI has been releasing this update article annually since 2010 to provide insight into the experiences that small grains growers had with FHB during the most recent growing season.

For readers interested in learning more about Fusarium Head Blight of wheat and barley visit ScabUSA to find publications and resources by USWBSI funded researchers. Producers can also view the USWBSI FHB Risk Tool developed by researchers in the USWBSI, to monitor FHB risk during the growing season as well as review prior year data for planning. Real-time FHB Alerts sent out during the growing season are also provided by the USWBSI, learn more and subscribe on the website.

The USWBSI is a national multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research consortium whose goal is to develop effective control measures that minimize the threat of Fusarium Head Blight (scab), including the production of mycotoxins, for producers, processors and consumers of wheat and barley. The USWBSI’s more than $8.5 million annual budget comes from Federal funds appropriated through the USDA-ARS and is distributed to research projects in more than 30 states.

SPORTS FEEVER – November 24, 2022

SPORTS FEEVER – Written by Chris Fee (chrisjfee@yahoo.com)

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at KROX!   I hope you enjoy time with family and/or friends.

I am thankful for the following things.

  1. My wife Tiffany.  She is the rock of our family.  She is a great mom, great wife, an awesome hair stylist, and most importantly she has been very patient and understanding as a single wife during the winter sports season.
  2. You.  If you are reading this column we have a lot in common.  We love high school sports in NW Minnesota and I appreciate you reading each week and listening to KROX.
  3. Our sponsors.  Without our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do every day!
  4. Family.  As we get older, I have realized our family tends to get closer.  Maybe because we start to realize family is one of the most important things in life.  Sports is minor compared to family, faith, and education.
  5. Last but not least, the KROX Crew.  KROX has been lucky for decades to have some of the best employees possible.  This year has been more of the same.  We are lucky to have a great crew that works hard and is always willing to do whatever is needed.  Without the employees at KROX we have NOTHING.  So we are forever thankful and grateful for them!

Enjoy this week’s column and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Good news for former Crookston Pirate Football and Girls Basketball Coach, and UND Football National Champion Eric Schmidt!!  On Tuesday, the University of Washington Huskies Athletic Department announced a contract extension to head football coach Kalen DeBoer through the 2028 season.  In his first year, DeBoer has led the Huskies to a 9-2 record heading into the regular season finale Saturday at Washington State.  Chances are they will beat Washington State and go 10-2 on the year and they should be in a pretty good bowl game.

Schmidt is an assistant coach on the staff and the entire staff had to be celebrating Tuesday evening!

University of North Dakota Women’s Basketball player and Roseau native, Kacie Borowicz was named the Summit League Women’s Basketball Peak Performer of the Week. Kacie averaged 27.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game!

JOKES

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Montana when suddenly a brand-new BMW M740i advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.
The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Salvatore Ferragamo loafers, Gucci sunglasses, and Hermes tie leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?”
Bud looks at the man, who obviously is a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, why not?”
The yuppie parks his car, whips out his MacBook Air computer, connects it to his RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to a SpaceX satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.
The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his iPhone 14 Pro that the image has been processed and the data stored.
Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized portable color LaserJet printer, turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”
“That’s right, so I guess you can go ahead and take one of my calves,” says Bud.
He watches the well-heeled young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the backseat of his car.
Then Bud says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back the calf?”
The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?”
“You’re a United States Congressman,” says Bud.
“Wow! That’s correct,” says the yuppie, “But how did you guess that?”
“No guessing required,” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars’ worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don’t know a thing about how working people make a living – or about cows, for that matter.
This is a herd of sheep, now give me back my dog.

One day a father, on his way home from work suddenly remembers that it’s his daughter’s birthday.
He stops at a toy store and goes in and asks the sales person, “How much for one of those Barbie’s in the display window?”
The salesperson answers, “Which one do you mean?”
“We have, work out Barbie for $19.95, shopping Barbie for $19.95, beach Barbie for $19.95, disco Barbie for $19.95, astronaut Barbie for $19.95, skater Barbie for $19.95, and divorced Barbie for $265.95”.
The amazed father asks: “Why is the Divorced Barbie $265.95 and the others only $19.95?”
The slightly miffed salesgirl rolls her eyes, sighs, and answers:
“Sir, Divorced Barbie comes with: Ken’s truck, Ken’s house, Ken’s fishing boat, Ken’s furniture, Ken’s dog, Ken’s computer, one of Ken’s friends, and a key chain made from Ken’s testicles.”

MINNESOTA EXPORTS HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH IN THIRD QUARTER

minnesota-seal-e1584661193709-16

Governor Tim Walz announced that exports of agricultural, manufactured, and mining goods from Minnesota surged to an all-time high of $7.3 billion in the third quarter of 2022. Minnesota exports jumped $1.6 billion between the third quarters of 2021 and 2022.

“Our workers, manufacturers, and farmers continue to produce high-demand goods and drive Minnesota’s economy forward on the global stage,” said Governor Walz. “Minnesota’s record-setting exports reflect what we already know: Minnesota is filled with world-class growers, problem-solvers, and innovators who are rising to meet global demand. We will continue to invest directly in communities and businesses across the state to build on this historic economic growth.”

Exports of many of the state’s top products grew strongly – with mineral fuel, oil (up 188 percent), electrical equipment (up 32 percent), cereals (up 315 percent) and vehicles (up 44 percent) fueling much of the growth.

“We are thrilled to see Minnesota businesses resuming their global expansion and outreach efforts,” said Gabrielle Gerbaud, Executive Director of the Minnesota Trade Office. “Minnesota is again hosting booths at selected major international trade shows. Just last week, we were at the Medica trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany. We invite Minnesota companies to contact us to learn more about Medica, as well as other export development opportunities.”

The Minnesota Trade Office supports small- and medium-sized Minnesota businesses through technical assistance, export education and training programs, trade promotion activities, services by offices in strategic overseas locations, and export expansion grants. State STEP grants (50 percent matching up to $7,500) support a range of export development activities, including participation in virtual and in-person trade shows and missions. The MTO also serves as Minnesota’s Office of Protocol, ensuring that the state’s interactions with foreign delegations and dignitaries are conducted with appropriate diplomatic etiquette and cultural practices.

The full third quarter 2022 report is available on DEED’s website in the Export and Trade Statistics section.

Athlete of the Week – Brekken Tull

brekken-tull-4

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey player Brekken Tull. The junior has gotten off to an explosive start tallying a total of three goals and five assists to lead Crookston to a 3-0 record. In her most recent performance against Fort Frances this past weekend, Brekken scored twice as the Pirates picked up a 4-0 win.

Crookston is coming off a phenomenal season that saw them finish Section runner-up. They are looking to carry that momentum over into this season and so far, the positivity of the group is paying dividends. “I think the atmosphere of the team this year has been really positive,” said Tull. “I know it’s allowed me to get off to a good start and help the team try and win games.”

Brekken Tull

As Tull mentioned, she believes winning can be attributed to their positivity, and as it turns outs, one of the main goals the Pirates have this year as a group is being positive. “As a team, I think we want to be more positive and make sure we’re working together,” said Tull. “If we do that, we know we can win a lot of games this year.”

Brekken has blossomed into a key player for the Pirates, and head coach Emily Meyer says she is excited to see her continued growth throughout the season. “Over the years I have seen Brekken grow on and off the ice. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to see her confidence grow each year,” said Pirates coach Emily Meyer. “She is a key player in our offense and that is already showing with her great start. I’m excited to see what else she can do for us as the season moves forward.”

Coach Meyer also noted Tull is the kind of person she loves having in her program because of the way she leads on and off the ice. “As a leader, Brekken does a great job of leading by example on and off the ice. She works well with all her teammates and is one that many look up to as a role model,” said coach Meyer. “Although she is quiet, her actions speak for her the moment she steps on the ice. She has been a great leader for us this year.”

Speaking of off the ice, Brekken stays plenty busy as she is a three-sport athlete also playing Tennis and Golf, and is involved at the High School in the LEO Club, Student Council, and Orchestra. The Pirates will try and keep their fast start going this weekend as they play West Fargo United and Northfield at the Ralph in Thief River Falls. If Crookston is to have success throughout the season, expect Tull to be right in the middle of it.

NORTHERN LIGHTS MINISTRY COLLABORATIVE CELEBRATE THE ORDINATION FOR RUTH SANDERS

ruthordination-560x420-1

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, a joyous celebration of ordination for Ruth Sanders was held at First Presbyterian Church in Crookston, MN. The joy was shared by not just one church but three churches who have joined together to form the Northern Lights Ministry Collaborative.

In 2015, Trinity Lutheran Church and First Presbyterian Church began discussions about a Shared Pastor between the two. Rev. Gregory Isaacson, the Senior Pastor at Trinity, was looking to fill a half-time associate position, and First Presbyterian was looking for a half-time pastor. A joint call committee was formed, and candidates were interviewed from both Presbyterian and Lutheran traditions. Rev. Elise Pokel, a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, started in August 2017.

In 2020, the two churches again found themselves in the call process, but the pandemic delayed the search for their next pastor. A call was extended to Rev. Michael Ozaki, a pastor in the Presbyterian Church USA, who started in September 2021.

In May 2022, Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston had a pastoral vacancy. They expressed interest in joining the collaborative to assist in their search for a half-time pastor. It just so happened that Ruth Sanders, a Crookston resident, was completing her Master of Divinity degree at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN, and was looking to become a pastor in the Presbyterian tradition. Leaders from the three churches discussed ministry needs and possibilities. Presbyterian and Methodist processes needed to approve Sanders to serve in the position of Pastor of Congregational Care for the collaborative and point pastor for Wesley United Methodist. She is called to implement a lay visitation program for the collaborative.

Rev. Ozaki becomes Pastor of Adult Education and Youth Ministries. He coordinates adult education opportunities and works closely with Trinity’s Director of Children, Youth, and Families Ministries in developing programs. He is the point pastor for First Presbyterian. Rev. Isaacson serves as Executive Pastor for the collaborative and is the lead pastor for Trinity Lutheran. He oversees the preaching rotation between the three churches and provides supervision for the collaborative efforts that the three churches share. He is excited to have the churches participate in a Lily Endowment-funded program called The Nourishing Vocation Project. This project will first engage individuals in further faith development and then involve leaders from the three churches in identifying missional and congregational goals as they share in ministry together.

The ordination service was spirit-filled with joy. Rev. Elise Pokel returned to share the sermon. Representatives from the three church bodies were present to extend greetings. All clergy present from the three church traditions shared in the “laying on of hands” in calling the Holy Spirit to fulfill Rev. Sanders call to ministry. The Northern Lights Ministry Collaborative has a bright future moving forward.

MINNESOTA DNR OFFERS FREE ENTRANCE TO MINNESOTA STATE PARKS AND RECREATION AREAS ON FRIDAY

minnesota-department-of-natural-resources-14

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will waive entrance fees to all 75 state parks and recreation areas Friday, November 25 — the day after Thanksgiving.

This “Free Park Day” is one of four days each year on which the DNR waives the vehicle permit required to enter state parks and recreation areas. The goal of Free Park Days is to encourage Minnesotans to get outdoors and enjoy the health and wellness benefits of spending time in nature.

“Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are open year-round and provide places of peace and beauty to recharge during the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season,” DNR Parks and Trails Division Director Ann Pierce said. “It’s a fantastic time to get out into nature with friends and family following Thanksgiving celebrations.”

According to the American Psychological Association, spending time in nature is linked to improved attention, lower stress, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders, and even increased empathy and cooperation.

There’s a state park or recreation area within 30 miles of most Minnesotans. Free Park Days provide an opportunity to visit a state park or recreation area for the first time or return to an old favorite to discover something new.

Most state park offices and visitor centers will be lightly staffed on November 25. Before and during their visit, visitors are encouraged to:

  • Check visitor alerts and find directions on state park pages via the DNR website (mndnr.gov).
  • Download GeoPDF maps (mndnr.gov/mobile/geopdf) before the trip. These maps will display a user’s current location, like other map applications, but the user does not have to be connected to the internet or have cell service to use them.
  • Visit the self-orientation signs near the park entrance for suggestions on what to see and do while visiting.
  • Help protect these special places for the future by staying on trails and leaving no trace.

For more information, visit the free entrance days to all Minnesota state parks page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/freeparkdays) or contact the DNR Information Center by emailing info.dnr@state.mn.us or by calling 888-646-6367 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

CROOKSTON AREA CHAMBER AMBASSADORS CONGRATULATE AUTHENTIC MEXICAN RESTAURANT EL GORDITO

111522-el-gordito

The Crookston Area Chamber Ambassadors gathered to recognize and congratulate a very exceptional business in the Crookston community, El Gordito, an authentic Mexican restaurant. Julia Mejia, co-owner, greeted the ambassadors with a smile, and a very important question, “hard shell or soft shell?” Following the photo for the news release, she got down to what she does best, delivering delicious dishes.

The family restaurant is a sure win when looking for authentic cuisine, which goes far beyond tacos and burritos. Julia along with co-owner and son, Orlando Carpano, make quite the duo when bringing a taste of Mexico to Crookston. The atmosphere is bright and colorful and full of genuine smells from the kitchen. Julia and Orlando have been partners since 2009. They shut down the Crookston location due to COVID and a shortage of workers. Orlando tried to manage whatever he could to re-open; it’s a smaller version of what they used to be, but the same great food. They were happy to re-open their doors and are trying to do the best they can. Orlando shared in a telephone conversation, “we are happy to be back in Crookston. This is our community; we are hard at it and will keep going. It’s a struggle, but we are still here.” Their Facebook page is El Gordito Market, and their phone number is 218-470-1099. Stop in for the dine-in option or take advantage of their in-store pickup.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Ambassador Team, please contact Mark Landa at mlanda@visitcrookston.com or 218-281-4320.
