Crookston’s Halle Winjum surpassed 1,000 points in her career this week with a Girls program record of 39 points in a game and a program record eight three-pointers in a game!  Pretty impressive for the junior who stepped up her game a notch or two this year and it will be exciting to see what she does over the rest of the season and next year.

Speaking of breaking records.  Crookston Boys Basketball’s Hunter Nicholas broke the boys program rebounds in a game record.  Hunter had 23 rebounds, breaking Caden Osborne’s 22.  Coach Garmen looked at the game film to get the official numbers and said he had 23 and the new record!  Nicholas is only a sophomore and has a great chance to break every Pirate boys rebounding record in the book.

The Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team played the 500th game in program history on Tuesday when they played East Grand Forks.  Crookston did better than the first game in program history as they beat EGF 8-1 on Tuesday night.

Crookston’s Ethan Boll made it official on Wednesday when he signed to play football at the University of North Dakota.  Boll played in the Minnesota Football All-Start game a couple of weekends ago.

Hunter Zenzen, of Barnesville, made a commitment to transfer from Iowa State to NDSU on Wednesday.  He will be closer to home and will join his brother Kaden on the team.  Hunter will have three years of eligibility left.

The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Football signed 33 players on Wednesday. 
On offense, Minnesota signed two quarterbacks, two running backs, two tight ends, five offensive linemen and five wide receivers. On defense, the Gophers added four defensive linemen, five linebackers and six defensive backs.
The Gophers added 11 players from Minnesota, five from Illinois and two from Florida, Georgia, Indiana and Wisconsin. Minnesota also added Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. Minnesota also added Canadian Drew Viotto, who played high school football in Michigan.

Now it is time for the 2021 A to Z New Years list. I have used a few suggestions that I received over the past week. It is a tough list to make and we miss several people that should. We try to highlight people that have had important impacts on KROX, Crookston, and area athletics. Here is this years list –

A – Alex Gullingsrud –  He makes the listed for the second year in a row. Alex is the nine-year-old son of Nicki (Philion) and Mike Gullingsrud.  Nicki is the head Red Lake Falls volleyball coach, and Mike is a longtime official for area high school and college athletics. Alex had this spot last year after he found out  last fall that he had Osteosarcoma on a tumor on his pelvic bone.  Alex had to have one of his legs amputated, and he made many trips to Rochester at the Mayo Clinic to get treatment.  We are happy to report Alex is back home and partaking in school since last spring and has been golfing, playing, and having fun like a kid should. That is great to see!

B – Blue Line Club, the Crookston Blue Line Club – The Crookston Blue Line Club brings more people to town than any other entity from the fall to the spring and even the summertime. Not only are they great for bringing people to town for tournaments and games, but they give kids an opportunity to play the game of hockey and try to work with any kid/family that is interested.

C – Crookston Pirate Booster Club and Crookston Fine Arts Booster Club – The two clubs raise money each year to give to the Crookston Pirate athletic teams and the Crookston School District music, arts, and drama departments. The financial impact is well over $40,000 each year and that helps every activity in the Crookston School District, thanks to the many people that donate to one or both of the clubs.

Crookston Baseball Association – There hasn’t been an organization that has done more for their sport than the Crookston Baseball Association over the last five to 10 years. They have helped with facilities at the UMC Baseball field and added scholarships. They have made upgrades to Jim Karn Baseball Field, the highland complex, and at some point in the hopefully near future would like to do a grandstand at Jim Karn Field.  So when you are out at Crookston establishments, make sure you play some pulltabs or electronic pulltabs because the proceeds go to the Baseball Association.

D – Doctors – Dr. Steve and Lucas Biermaier from Biermaier Chiropractic; and Dr. Collin Fennel, Dr. Erik Kanten, and a few others from RiverView Health volunteer their time and services at Crookston Pirate sporting events. How many high school football teams have an orthopedic surgeon and two chiropractors at home football games? You see Dr. Erik Kanten and Steve Biermaier on the boys and girls hockey benches is reassuring to parents. The doctors listed give their time, services, and overwhelming peace of mind to the kids, parents, and coaches.
On a more personal note, Angie Smith at Crookston Eye Clinic, Dr. Pandit at Retina Consultants in Fargo, and Dr. Sczepanski at North Dakota Eye Clinic in Grand Forks.  They have been awesome in helping me get my vision back in my right eye after a complete retina tear and just a few weeks ago a cataract surgery.  It has been a long four months of recovery, but I am getting there and can’t wait to see close to 20/20 again.  That should happen soon.

E – Ethan Boll – The senior four-sport athlete is one of the top running backs in the area and will play at the University of North Dakota next year.  He made the Minnesota Football Coaches Association and Minnesota Vikings All-Star Football game. In Wrestling we won the state Class A Championship at 220 pounds last year and is ranked #1 this year.  In track, has made it to the state track meet, and he is on the baseball team. He is also an honor rolls student and leads the team by example.

F – Fertile-Beltrami School – Not only do they lead northwest Minnesota in test scores, but they also have been dominant in some of their sports.  The Football team made it to the Minnesota 9-Man state semi-finals this year after finishing state runner-up last year.  They have won the state boys golf tournament in the last two seasons!  The Boys Basketball team went 25-5 last year and lost to Cass Lake-Bena in the 8A East subsection championship game.  This year they are 5-1 with a one-point loss to Cass Lake-Bena.  The Girls Basketball team went 22-7 last year, and they are already off to a 5-2 start this season.  The Girls Golf team finished sixth place at state last year.  The track teams send several Falcons to the state meet every year.  Last year they had four that placed at the state track meet.

Frank Fee – He still helps KROX once and a while. He is a member of the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame and was the one to start KROXAM.com and created the monster it has become. He covered high school sports for over 40 years and served on the Region 8A committee as a school board member, he was a long-time Section 8A Boys Hockey statistician when hockey had one class and has broadcast thousands and thousands of high school sporting events and hundreds and hundreds of state tournament games. He taught me the importance of hard work and doing things the right way.

G – Grace Espinoza – She is the Crookston Pirate Dance team coach.  In three years she has built the numbers of the program and has built huge numbers in the feeder program (Just For Kix).  She is a Crookston High School grad and has the youth and energy to relate with the girls, but at the same time she works the girls extremely hard and it has shown in dramatic improvement in a short period of time.

H – Harley Stahlecker – The long-time Crookston High School track coach.  In 2021 he was named the Section 8A volunteer of the year.  Harley has given over 60 years of dedication to the track and field program. He is truly one of the most dedicated, hardworking, and successful coaches that has come through NW Minnesota. It wasn’t a secret on why Crookston always has great female hurdlers.  He has coached a handful or hurdlers at the state meet and at least two throwers at state.

Halle Winjum – The junior three-sport athlete just passed 1,000 career points with an outstanding performance against East Grand Forks.  She scored a school-record 39 points, made a school-record eight three-pointers, and added a bunch of rebounds, assists, and steals.  She was the number one singles player for the Pirates and made it to state in doubles again.  She is also in track.  She is not only a tremendous athlete, but she is a better teammate and person.  It doesn’t get much better than Halle!

I – Iowa Hawkeyes – The nomination came from Jeff Butler of Crookston.  A big Iowa Hawkeye fan!  It is the alma mater of Crookston’s Kamille Wahlin, and currently Drake Rhodes (son of CHS grad Karna (Hanson) Rhodes, nephew of Brock Hanson, Seth Hanson, and Marley (Hanson) Melbye.

J – Jim Weinzierl – Jim (and his wife Candy) retired this past summer from being the Region 8A Executive Secretary.  He helped coordinate all the Region 8A tournaments and was the go-to guy in NW Minnesota for anything high school sports.  Jim was a teacher in Park Rapids for many years, an official, and a coach.  Not only was he good at what he did, but he is also a great guy, and we will miss seeing him as much as we have in the past.

K – KROX Staff – The KROX staff keeps things moving. It is a typical small business where we all do more than one job, partially because of the website. I have the best staff working at KROX. I am lucky to have dependable, hard-working employees that truly care about KROX, our listeners and doing the best we can do each day. I thank them and without them, we have nothing.

L – Listeners and Website visitors – Without the listeners and website visitors, we wouldn’t be able to continue to do what we do. Your continued support of all of KROX’s coverage is appreciated and we’re looking forward to providing another full year of Crookston and Northwest Minnesota sports coverage in 2020.

M – Minnesota Vikings. Have you ever seen a team like this?  They trail by 33 points at halftime and comeback to win 39-36 in overtime.  It is unbelievable.  The win at Buffalo was another unbelievable finish.  Is this year the year for the Vikings?   Or are they going to be done in the second round of the playoffs?  Who cares, the team has been a lot of fun to watch and each week has been a rollercoaster ride this year.

N – Nate Lubarski – He has taken over as Crookston High School Activities Director and finished his second year as Pirate Head Football Coach.  In football, he led the team to its first Section championship in 18 years.  He holds players accountable.  He makes sure they are attending practice and if they don’t, they are disciplined.  If kids don’t behave in school they have to sit for the first half.  He has brought a desired and positive culture to the team and doing things the right way for the program.  As activities director, he has been indoctrinated into the wonderful winter weather postponement season and has done a great job.

O – Officials – No matter how good, or bad, they might be, they are an important part of high school, college, and pro athletics. Without them, we have call your own….which we all know would get ugly. We thank them for their commitment to athletics and the willingness to take the yelling and screaming of fans and coaches to make sure we can watch our favorite sports!. Thank all officials for their hard work and dedication to keeping sports going!

P – Parents – Two things.   1. It takes a big commitment to be a parent of an athlete.  A lot of weekends out of town at tournaments, driving the kids to and from practice and sometimes early in the morning.  It takes a lot to be a parent of an athlete and kudos to all of you.   2. Be quiet, cheer positive, enjoy the ride.  Don’t be an idiot that yells at the refs, or cuts down the coaches (especially in front of the kids).  Sports are supposed to be fun so enjoy the ride and there is a 99.999999999999999 percent chance your kids isn’t going pro, so relax and let them have fun!

R – Rick Niemela – The Crookston School District Transportation Director has been a magician every year.   The Pirate sports teams have been able to get busses for every trip without any problems (that we know of), and they have started all the games on time this year.

S – Steve Gust – The UMC Baseball coach has done more with less than any Division II baseball coach in the nation. He is a tireless recruiter, finds kids that love the game as much as he does. The baseball program has been the most competitive program at UMC since he has taken over the helm. He has built the program starting with two scholarships and now they have around 7 to 8 scholarships and expect that to show up on the field over the next couple of years. The future continues to be bright for UMC baseball.

T – Tiffany Fee – My wife, the better half. She is like a fine wine. She keeps getting better with age. She really is the best!! Tiff has done a great job raising our kids and making meals, keeping the house clean, and everything else she does all while working 40 to 60 hours a week. She is so busy, I can’t get a haircut! She is basically the opposite of me……she is nice, friendly, and everybody likes her. Most importantly, she puts up with me!! She is the best wife a guy could ask for and I thank her for everything.

U – UMC Athletic Director Stephanie Helgeson.  She is a great person, she is great at her job, and I feel like no matter what is done at UMC, programs are still going to struggle.  I have known her for a long-time, and there isn’t a person more frustrated year after year, but she keeps trying to do the best she can do and tries to do whatever is within her power to make the programs and facilities better.  I am not sure how lucky the coaches know they are to have such a good A.D., but they have a great one in Steph.  Most people don’t know how things work at UMC while having to go down to the Main Campus in Minneapolis, there are a lot of channels to go through, and some are open, and some get shut immediately.  There has been a regular turnover in Chancellors, about every four years.  That doesn’t help either. So keep up the solid work Steph.  I am cheering for you!

V – Victories for the Pirate Girls Hockey team – The #7 ranked Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team is having one of the best starts in program history.  They are 9-1-1 on the season with a loss to #1 ranked Warroad, and a tie with a team in the metro area.  They are head and shoulders above the rest of the section, with the exception of Warroad, who beat them handily.  The Girls can run two lines without dropping off much, they have two sets of defensemen and two solid goalies.  They will be tested big-time at the Warroad Christmas tournament on December 26 when they take on #2 ranked Hermantown/Proctor, on December 27 they play Lakeville North, and on December 28 they play #1 ranked Warroad again.

W – Wes Knutson – Wes has been a Minnesota High School registered official for 51 years. He officiated nearly every sport except hockey, with many section and state tournament experiences.  Wes had heart surgery over the summer, and a few days after surgery, he had a stroke and is slowly recovering. His officiating career is over, but when you speak with him, he still wants to work in lower-level basketball.  We are happy to say Wes is getting better each day!!

X – X-Factor – Crookston Pirate Winter athletic teams X-factors –
Boys Hockey – The second line.  Needs to be a consistent goal-scoring line.  Or be up in the plus/minus.
Girls Hockey – The second line.  They will need to be tough if the Pirates want to compete with Warroad.
Boys Basketball – Isaac Thomforde and Reggie Winjum.  The Pirates need them to produce.
Girls Basketball –  The other three on the floor besides Halle Winjum and Abby Borowicz.
Wrestling – The lower weights.  If they can get some wins, the Pirates mid and upper weight can win a lot of matches.

Y – YOU! – If you are reading this thank you!  

Z – Darin Zimmerman – Coach Z will have a firm strong hold on this spot for years to come. Not just because of the Z in his name, but what he has done with the girls basketball program. I know Darin would be the first to admit that he has some pretty good athletes to work with, he has molded the program into a defensive juggernaut and one o the top programs in the state. They will stay towards the top of the section for many years to come.

Twin Cities PBS (TPT) and Boucha Films have partnered to create “Boucha” (working title). Directed and produced by Leya Hale, the documentary tells the story of Henry Boucha’s life and is set to release in 2024.

Boucha will be honored during the Warroad Hockeytown Classic on December 29 prior to the Warroad vs Orono hockey game at 7:30 pm at the Warroad Garden in Warroad, MN. The documentary film team will be there to capture this event.

The entire community is invited to come in celebration and to be part of the documentary filming. Spectators are encouraged to arrive by 7:00 pm with the ceremony scheduled for 7:15 pm. A meet and greet with Boucha will be held in the lobby between the first and second period of the game.

The 2022 Crookston Hockey Alumni games/scrimmages will be held Friday, December 23 at the Crookston Sports Center. Johnny Holmes will be back again at the Eagles and all players in the alumni games get in free.

Stephanie (Lindsay) Perreault works with the North Dakota State stats crew for Bison football, volleyball, and basketball in the winter. Stephanie’s husband, Ryan, is the assistant director for Bison media relations.

Jason Bushie is the hockey athletic trainer at Colorado College.

Chris Myrold is the Director and Fitness at Mission Ranch and Fitness in Camel, California.

Kyle Buchmeier is a Tennis Pro at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis

Ben Andringa is serving our country with the Army and is deployed to Iraq for nine months.

Jarrett Butenhoff is serving our country with the U.S. Navy.

Joshua Butenhoff is serving our country on a Submarine with the Pacific Fleet with the US Navy.

Peter Cournia is a 2002 Crookston High School Graduate and a grad of West Point and currently serving in the U.S. Army.

Erik Ellingson is serving our country with the U.S. Air Force at Minot.

Philip Kujawa, class of 2004, from Crookston High School.  He is an Army recruiter in Rochester.

Rob Sobolik is the General Manager of the Fargodome
