Fashion designer and punk icon Vivienne Westwood dies at 81

shutterstock_360426479

Dame Vivienne Westwood, the fashion designer and activist who was considered an icon of Britain’s punk movement in the 1970s, has died at age 81.  A message posted to Westwood’s Twitter read: “Vivienne Westwood died today, peacefully and surrounded by her family, in Clapham, South London. The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better.”

Westwood was born Vivienne Isabel Swire on April 8th, 1941 in Derbyshire, England. She briefly attended University of Westminster (then Harrow Art School), but would go on to become a primary school teacher making her own jewelry on the side, which she sold on London’s Portobello Road. In the mid-1960s, Westwood met artist Malcolm McLaren, who would shortly thereafter become manager of Sex Pistols. Together, Westwood and McLaren managed the store SEX, where they sold the clothing they designed. SEX increased in popularity and became a hub for London punks after Sex Pistols were seen wearing Westwood and McLaren’s designs.

Westwood is largely credited for helping push the punk movement towards the mainstream, as well as unifying the fashion and music industries. Westwood was also vocal about numerous causes and movements, notably climate change awareness, and often incorporated her political activism into her designs.

Westwood is survived by her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, and two sons: Ben Westwood, born 1963, and Joseph Corré, born 1967.

CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOOPS STRUGGLES WITH DETROIT LAKES’ SIZE AND DEFENSE IN LOSS

all-tourney-team

The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team struggled with a big and physical Detroit Lakes Lakers team and lost 59-37 in the Championship game of the Fergus Falls Holiday Tournament.  Halle Winjum and Abby Borowicz were named to the All-tournament team.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston had a good start to the game with a long pass to Libby Salentine for a layup and a 2-0 lead.  Detroit Lakes responded with a 7-2 run before the Pirate’s Emma Gunderson scored a basket and was followed by a Halle Winjum three-pointer to tie the game at 7-7 three minutes into the game. The teams were tied at 11-11 before Detroit Lakes built a 17-12 lead.  Crookston’s Salentine had a rebound and putback to bring the Pirates within a 17-14 deficit halfway through the half, but it was all Detroit Lakes the rest of the way as they used their size and length on defense and phsicality and size on the offensive side to go on a 12-0 run for a 29-14 lead.  Crookston finally stopped the run as Winjum made a three-pointer.  After a Laker basket, Winjum added two free and Salentine ended the half with a rebound and basket and Detroit Lakes took a 31-21 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Winjum gave Crookston a quick spark to start the second half with an early three-pointer, but Detroit Lakes scored the next 14 points to open up a 45-24 lead five minutes into the half. Winjum stopped the run with a basket, but the Lakers responded with a four-point play before Isabelle Smith scored on a nice jump shot and Abby Borowicz follwed with a three-pointer to bring her teamw ithin a 49-31 deficit.  Detroit Lakes scored the next six points and led 55-31 with eight minutes left in the game.  The Lakers scored the next eight points over a four minute span and led 59-31with less than four minutes in the game.  Both teams went deep into the bench and Detroit Lakes coasted to a 59-37 victory.

Crookston drops to 4-3 on the year.  Detroit Lakes improves to 7-1 on the year.

Mary Louise Amiot, 84, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully at her home early Sunday morning, December 4, 2022, with loving family by her side.

Mary Lou, as she was affectionately known throughout her life, was born on July 31, 1938, to Louis and Louise (Noel) Audette on their farm near Huot, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith, then attended elementary school at Huot, and Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls through her junior year. The family moved to Crookston in 1955 where Mary Lou graduated from the St. Joseph’s Academy as a member of the Class of 1956. She then began working for Fr. John O’Toole at the Our Northland Diocese newspaper. On July 6, 1957, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Joseph Amiot in St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Crookston. During the ensuing years, their marriage would be blessed by the births of Deb, Deanna, Doug, Denice, and Dale. In 1966 Mary and Ken opened Ken’s Drive-In in Crookston and ten years later purchased The Kegs in Grand Forks, ND from Martha Muzzy. Six months after that they opened Your Host Drive-In in Crookston. From 1992 through 2003 Mary Lou was employed in dining services at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. In retirement, she began volunteering at the Mount Saint Benedict Monastery and Riverview Hospital Gift Shop. Mary Lou couldn’t resist the lure of the food business so for ten years she worked part-time for New Horizons, the company that operated the RiverView Cafeteria.

Mary Lou is lovingly survived by Ken, her husband of 65 years; their 5 children: Deb (Dave) Sylvester and Deanna Fredericks (Tim Wise) of Crookston, MN, Doug (Glenda) Amiot, Denice (Scott) Tangen, and Dale (Cheryl) Amiot, all of the Minneapolis area; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Louise Audette; granddaughter, Ona Nicole Amiot; great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Rae Sylvester; brother, Kenny Audette; grandparents, Henry and Eugenie Cassavant and Antone and Exerine Noel; and several brothers-in-law.

A private family Mass will be held for Mary Louise Amiot at a later date. Memorials may be given in her memory to the Mount Saint Benedict Monastery or Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements and messages of condolence may be conveyed to the family by going to Mary Louise Amiot’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com

U.S. to require negative Covid test for travelers arriving from China

shutterstock_1661297989

The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that travelers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau will need to submit a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test before entering the United States, starting on Jan. 5. The new policy comes amid a surge in Covid cases in China and fears that a new, concerning variant could emerge. China is reporting more than 250 million positive cases in the first 20 days of December.

Under the new rule, travelers older than 2 must submit a negative COVID-19 test taken within two days of departing for the United States. Nationality and vaccination status will not have any bearing on whether a test must be provided. The policy also applies to travelers who have connecting flights in China. Passengers who tested positive 10 days before their flight can provide documented proof of recovery instead of a negative test.

The CDC warned that new variants of the COVID-19 virus are likely to emerge and go unidentified for longer due to China’s reduced testing and case reporting, saying in a press release: “Pre-departure testing and the requirement to show a negative test result has been shown to decrease the number of infected passengers boarding airplanes, and it will help to slow the spread of the virus as we work to identify and understand any potential new variants that may emerge.”

The U.S. State Department issued a level-three travel advisory for China on Dec. 23, urging travelers to reconsider plans to visit the country “due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and COVID-19-related restrictions.”

Ringleader of plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sentenced to 19 1/2 years in prison

shutterstock_1229690290

47-year-old Barry Croft Jr., who was convicted of playing a key role in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, was sentenced to 19 1/2 years in prison Wednesday. Croft and co-defendant Adam Fox, 39, were convicted in August of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and to use a weapon of mass destruction to attack Whitmer, who drew the hatred of far-right groups for her efforts to curb the spread of Covid in 2020. Fox was sentenced to 192 months (16 years) in prison by U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker, and Croft was sentenced to 235 months in a Grand Rapids.

Jonker stopped short of issuing a life sentence sought by prosecutors, but the judge largely agreed with the government’s stance that Croft fueled the plot with dangerous rhetoric. Jonker said: “I do think of Mr. Croft as the more seriously culpable … more so than even Mr. Fox … I think he was the person who gave Mr. Fox something to grab on to,” calling Croft the “idea guy” who egged on co-conspirators with “wrong” and “twisted” ideology.

A jury in April failed to arrive at verdicts against Fox and Croft, forcing a judge to declare a mistrial before a second trial proved decisive. Gov. Whitmer, who won re-election last month, was the focal point of far-right rage in 2020 when she imposed various lockdowns aimed at curbing the spread of Covid. A representative for Whitmer on Wednesday said the governor had no comment beyond a statement she made when the Croft and Fox were convicted, insisting that plots “against public officials and threats to the FBI are a disturbing extension of radicalized domestic terrorism that festers in our nation, threatening the very foundation of our republic.”

Whoopi Goldberg apologizes for controversial comments on Holocaust

shutterstock_1215375961-2

Whoopi Goldberg has issued an apology after receiving backlash for her remarks about the Holocaust, after she seemingly doubled down in an interview with the The Sunday Times of London on comments she made earlier this year.  In the Sunday Times interview, Goldberg dished on cancel culture and more before reiterating the controversial comments she made earlier this year on The View, when she declared the Holocaust was “not about race,” but about “white supremacy” and “man’s inhumanity to man.”  As a result of those remarks, ABC News President Kin Godwin announced in a statement that Goldberg would be suspended from The View for two weeks.

In response to the Sunday Times interview, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement that Goldberg’s comments “are deeply offensive and incredibly disappointing, especially given that this is not the first time she had made remarks like this. In a moment when antisemitic incidents have surged across the U.S., she should realize that making such ignorant statements can have real consequences.” Greenblatt also issued a statement following Goldberg’s initial comments about the Holocaust: “[Whoopi’s remarks] are deeply offensive and incredibly disappointing, especially given that this is not the first time she had made remarks like this. In a moment when antisemitic incidents have surged across the U.S., she should realize that making such ignorant statements can have real consequences.”

Goldberg has since apologized in a statement to Variety: “Recently while doing press in London, I was asked about my comments from earlier this year. I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why, and attempted to recount that time. It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in. I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt and angered people. My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not. In this time of rising antisemitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I always stood with the Jewish people and always will. My support for them has not wavered and never will.”
