Actor Cindy Williams, best known for her role in the 70s-80s TV sitcom “Laverne & Shirley”, has died at age 75.

Williams children said in a statement released by family spokesperson Liza Cranis that she died peacefully Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles after a short illness: “The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed. Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”

Williams starred as Shirley Feeney opposite Penny Marshall (who played Laverne DeFazio) in the popular sitcom “Laverne & Shirley”. “Laverne & Shirley,” a spinoff of “Happy Days,” starred Williams and Marshall as roommates who work in a Milwaukee bottling plant. The show ran from 1976-1983. Williams also appeared in the 1973 film “American Graffiti” and the 1974 film “The Conversation.”

Henry Winkler, who played The Fonz in “Happy Days,” shared: “Cindy has been my friend and professional colleague since I met her on the set of ‘Happy Days’ in 1975. Not once have I ever been in her presence when she wasn’t gracious, thoughtful and kind. Cindy’s talent was limitless. There was not a genre she could not conquer. I am so glad I knew her.”

Williams is survived by her two children, Emily and Zak. In their statement, her children said that their mother was devoted to rescuing animals and her faith, and that she wanted the world to laugh: “May that laughter continue in everyone, because she would want that .. Thank you for loving our Mom, she loved you too.”

Court rejects Johnson & Johnson bankruptcy filing in talcum powder lawsuits

shutterstock_1291988104237583

On Monday, a federal appellate court rejected a bankruptcy filing from Johnson & Johnson, in an attempt to protect itself from thousands of lawsuits claiming its talcum-based powder causes cancer. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the pharmaceutical giant erred when it put its subsidiary LTL Management into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. J&J created the subsidiary in 2021 to specifically handle the thousands of lawsuits against its baby powder. The court ruled “only a putative debtor in financial distress” is able to file for bankruptcy protection. Monday’s ruling means the subsidiary is ineligible to file for bankruptcy protection from some 38,000 lawsuits. Had it ruled differently, the majority of lawsuits against the company would have been protected from financial penalty.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by Johnson & Johnson in June 2021, letting a lower court verdict stand and awarding nearly $2.1 billion to a group of 22 women in a class action lawsuit. The women contended the talcum powder contained asbestos and was the cause of their ovarian cancer. Overall, the company faces costs of about $3.5 billion related to verdicts and settlements.

The Jersey-based company originally said in 2020 that it was discontinuing the talc-based baby powder product, amid the thousands of claims filed by customers in North America alleging it causes ovarian cancer and other illnesses. J&J then said last August it would end sales of the product at some point this year.  Johnson & Johnson said in a statement Monday: “As we have said from the beginning of this process, resolving this matter as quickly and efficiently as possible is in the best interests of claimants and all stakeholders. We continue to stand behind the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder, which is safe, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.”

FOURNET BUILDING LOOKS TO GAIN CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY AND HOLD OPEN HOUSE TOURS IN THE SUMMER

img-7755-560x420843295-1

The Fournet Building in downtown Crookston is almost ready to be open for the public and tours after nearly five years of construction. Building owner and general contractor Jeff Evers reported that the second and third-floor office areas are mostly complete and is looking to gain a Certificate of Occupancy for the second floor to move employees into the building.

The building is a three-floor project that has been in development since 2018 that multiple organizations in downtown Crookston will use. The first floor will be a storefront for new businesses to rent and lease, similar to the Valley Tech Park by the University of Minnesota Crookston. “On the corner of it, where you rent one office, someone can come in, and they have a small business and don’t want a whole storefront, but they want a good location, nice office, and conference room they can use. So, where the Public Defenders are now on the main floor’s corner, behind the lobby, I’d like to make it so you can rent one of the offices and get to use one of the conference rooms to set up their business and get to have their business name on the corner of the building so people would know where you’re at. It’s like what Valley Tech Park and CHEDA do already, instead its downtown version of that,” Building owner and general contractor Jeff Evers explained. “With that storefront, it’s pretty visible, and I think the price would be about $399 to $599, including all of the utilities to make it affordable, or someone can have their own business with all those amenities. So, that’s coming. I’d say by spring. We’d have an Open House on the corner just for that space. I’m excited about that. It’s a good opportunity and a creative way to do what Valley Tech Park is doing.” The Tri-Valley Opportunity Council occupies the building’s second floor, and the State of Minnesota will occupy the third floor for the Public Defenders. Last summer, the building had added an elevator and was nearing completion of the second floor. Now, nearly all the office rooms on the second and third floors have been completed, and some Tri-Valley employees have moved into the building.

Since the summer, the building has installed a new double-sided elevator, completed the flooring in the atrium and many of the offices on the second floor, added furniture and desks to the conference and employee break rooms, a safety rail for the railing on the third floor’s walkway and carpeting to the main lobby. While most of the second floor has been completed, Evers says there are still some things they need to finish on both the second and third floors, but the third still has much more work to complete. “What we’ve got left is some trimming to do in the atrium and other random things on the second floor and a little bit of trim on the third floor. The lobby’s a lot further along. It’s nearly complete,” Jeff Evers explained. “We’re on hold on the third-floor ballroom for right now, and we’ll see how that works out. It’s not sheet-rocked yet. But as far as construction on the third floor, there’s not much. There’s more trimming, and some lights have to be put in, but it’s almost complete.”

With the latest additions made to the building, Evers has reached out to the City’s Building Inspector, Greg Hefta, for a Certificate of Occupancy to allow the Tri-Valley Opportunity Council to begin moving all of their employees to the new building, which he believes will be received to let them begin moving in soon. Along with the employees, Evers has also reached out to the Polk County Historical Society to try and set up tours for the public in the summer. “I’m trying to get going with the Historical Society, and we’re trying to plan that for this summer, but there’s a lot of planning to get that to happen. We’ve already had some discussions that we need to keep going with that. I hope we can get something going this summer and have some kind of an Open House where people can come where we’ll have it be one day or have it be more scheduled. We definitely want it to be open, so people can see the Grand Staircase and stuff that was built over a hundred years ago.”

Pictures of the building can be seen below-

MINNESOTA VETERANS HOMES RECEIVE $80,000 DONATION FROM HUTCHINSON VFW

veterans-affairs120711

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) was honored to receive a generous donation of $80,000 from the Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Charles McLaughlin Post 906 in Hutchinson, MN. This donation was specifically directed to each individual State Veterans Home, which will receive $10,000 per location.

Department of Minnesota VFW Commander Dale Hoogeveen, VFW Charitable Gambling Manager Doug Johnson, and Jerry Tews, Charles McLaughlin Post 906 member, presented the checks to MDVA senior leadership and the Veterans Homes’ public affairs team members at the VFW Midwinter Conference on January 13.

Funding will be used at the five current State Veterans Homes in Minneapolis, Hastings, Luverne, Fergus Falls, and Silver Bay to develop and deliver new Resident activities and enhance existing Resident programming. The three future Homes in Preston, Bemidji, and Montevideo – scheduled to open in mid-2023 – will use this funding to purchase televisions for Residents’ bedrooms, an expense that skilled nursing care Residents would traditionally cover.

Commander Hoogeveen shared that this donation was the result of an initiative voted upon and taken on solely by Post 906 with enthusiastic support from local VFW members and citizens in the immediate community and nearby cities and towns. “It was absolutely a collective, united effort. These people gave their time, their talents, and their treasures to guarantee they could deliver a gift that would be well-used by our Veterans,” Hoogeveen said.

Tews, a member of Post 906 for the past 40 years, previously served as Post Commander and District Commander and is currently its Assistant Manager of Gambling. “Each year, we dedicate a large amount of resources to many community organizations doing important work, including first responders and schools. But Veterans’ needs are always first and foremost for our contributions,” he said.

Colby Mickolichek, current Commander of Post 906, says his members appreciate every opportunity for their charitable gambling to help groups dedicated to helping others. “We love when neighbors and community friends stop by to see what we’re doing. It’s an opportunity to teach a little about our mission and share our hope for what the future might hold when everyone works together,” he said.

MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke noted the significant positive impact this contribution will have on Minnesota State Veterans Homes. “A donation of this magnitude will go a long way to help increase the quality of life for our Residents. Whether it means expanding Home services or providing unique or special Home products not currently included on our campuses, the end result will be an improved daily experience for Veterans.”

MDVA extends its gratitude to the Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars and Charles McLaughlin Post 906 in Hutchinson. Their partnership is essential in helping the State Veterans Homes provide the highest level of care to those who have served.
