McCarthy loses 11th vote; House adjourns with no speaker elected

shutterstock_1863956683

The U.S. House of Representatives adjourned for a third straight day on Thursday without electing a House speaker, after Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy lost his 11th consecutive vote for the position. The House voted 219-213 along party lines to reconvene noon Friday. McCarthy and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., were again nominated for speaker on Thursday, with the Democrat consistently netting all 212 Democrat votes while McCarthy went from 201 votes to 200 throughout the day.

McCarthy, who was the House minority leader during the 117th Congress, has sought to earn the House gavel previously held by Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, but has failed to garner the 218 votes necessary to do so. The deadlock marks the first time in 100 years that House lawmakers have failed to elect a speaker on the first ballot; the GOP will again try to end the political stalemate that began Tuesday and which has prevented the 118th Congress from conducting any business, including the swearing in of new members.

The deadlock leaves much of the government at a standstill. None of the newly elected congressional leaders can be sworn in until someone ascends to the role of speaker, and returning lawmakers have not had their security clearances renewed, so they cannot receive private briefings from the military and intelligence agencies. Without a speaker, the House also can’t carry out oversight of the federal government or other entities or call witnesses before committees.

The speaker is next in line after the U.S. vice president to lead the nation in the event of a circumstance that would prevent the commander-in-chief from carrying out their duties.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL FREE THROW CONTEST WILL BE THIS SUNDAY AT CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL

free-throw-competition

The annual Knights of Columbus free throw contest is back again at the Crookston High School gymnasium this Sunday, January 8, for all boys and girls ages 9-14.

The 51-year-old competition is a free event for all children to participate in to provide an athletic outlet and encourage the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition while testing their basketball shooting skills against students across the region and even the state. The competition will have each competitor shoot fifteen consecutive shots and try to make as many as they can. A line judge will monitor each shooter to ensure the children don’t step over the line when they shoot, a person catching rebounds, and a counter of how many each contestant makes. “Everyone gets a chance to participate. It’s open to boys and girls ages 9 to 14. We use the men’s balls for the older boys and the women’s balls for the younger boys and girls and older girls,” Knights of Columbus member John Bjorgo explained. “The younger boys and girls that are ages 9-11, we put a piece of tape on the floor at the 12’ line instead of shooting from the regular 15’ free throw line. This way, the kids will develop the proper form of throwing the ball.”

The contest will separate the contestants into their age groups, and the first-place competitors of each group will win a certificate and medal and have the chance to advance to the district-level competition. “We start out with our local level, which is this Sunday, and then all of the first-place participants will go on to a district level. In our district, we have Crookston, Ada, and East Grand Forks. Us three are the ones that are running this competition for now,” John Bjorgo explained. “If they do get to be first-place contestants, we have them go onto our next level, which is a district level, and after that is a regional level, and after regional, you’ll end up at state, which is at St. Cloud.”
If, in any case, there is a tie for first place, the two competitors will shoot another five shots to determine who the winner will be. Bjorgo noted that if a first-place winner cannot attend the district level of the competition, the Knights of Columbus will allow the second-place contestant of that group to stand in for the first-place winner to represent Crookston.

Once the contest begins, the 9-11 age groups will begin their portion of the competition in the High School gym, and the rest of the age groups will begin once those age groups finish. Registration for the contest will be in the Crookston High School Commons from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. and is free for all contestants to join and practice before the contest begins at 1:00 p.m. “We do it all right there at the gymnasium in the Commons area. We have the kids, and the parents help fill it all out so that everything is fairly legible, and we have good contact numbers to call them so that the first-place winners are able to make it to the next round.” This contest is sponsored by Crookston Knights of Columbus council 1216.

Stay tuned to KROX and kroxam.com for the results and pictures of the winners.

Police identified the deceased as 42-year-old Michael Haight, his wife Tausha Haight, 40, their five children and 78-year-old Gail Earl, Tausha’s mother. Michael Haight is suspected of killing his family and himself. Police said in a statement that all of the deceased sustained gunshot wounds.

Deputies arrived at the residence in Enoch City to conduct a welfare check and discovered three adults were also found dead.  The children were all students in the Iron County School District. They were 17, 12, 4 and two 7-year-olds. Three were female and the 4-year-old and one of the 7-year-olds were male. According to city manager Rob Dotson, the community is in shock over the tragedy, saying the family of eight attended church and schools in the area and that they were very active citizens. The father of the family was an insurance agent, Dotson said, adding that no one ever noticed any issues or dysfunction in the family.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox expressed his condolences on Twitter“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless violence. Please keep the community of Enoch in your prayers.” Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson also said on Twitter that she was “praying for the community of Enoch tonight.”

CROOKSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY TO LAUNCH “ART BY THE RED” CLUB ON MONDAY

lake-agassiz-regional-library-picture-28

The Crookston Public Library is introducing a new monthly art club called “Art by the Red.” The club will meet every second Monday of the month from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. to learn different art mediums, meet local artists, and work on individual art projects!

At each meeting, the club at the library learns different art techniques to complete various art projects and discuss different artistic mediums with other club members and guest artists. “If you’re a beginner artist, or if you already are artistically inclined or an artist that would like to meet some like-minded people and do some art with others in the community, this is for you,” Club president Jane Berg explained. “The club is going to be open for mid-teens through senior citizens, and we’re going to be doing art projects.” Each month, the club will discuss different art techniques and experiment with them to create projects, hear from a guest artist on how they used the technique to create some of their work, or see artwork that club members are working on to receive help or feedback from other members or teachers in a section known as “Workshop Time.” “Our first meeting on Monday, we’re going to be learning about colored pencil drawing and techniques. So, we’ll be learning that and giving people an opportunity to learn on that technique. Then we’re going to learn some other techniques,” Jane Berg explained. “Other months, we might do some painting, some we might do ink drawing, and hopefully in some months when summer comes around, and the weather gets nice and warm, we’ll head out to the local park and do some nature drawing. There’s going to be some different things we’ll talk about and different artistic mediums that we’ll be doing and give people an opportunity to learn from other artists in the community.”

While the library already has several clubs within it, such as Reading by the Red and other programs that Club President Jane Berg found that many people were extremely interested in that she wished to make events like that happen more often. “One of the things that really inspired me to start Art by the Red is that I did a couple of art projects and programs here last year. I did a Paint and Sit program last winter and a nature sketching program last August, which was pretty popular,” Jane Berg explained. “So, it inspired me to do something on a monthly basis because there were people that were really looking forward to these events, and I wanted to have something that was more on a regular basis, so Art by the Red was formed.”

Before each meeting, the club will post what art medium it will be studying for it on the Crookston Public Library’s Facebook page. The club also encourages new members who wish to come to RSVP with the library to learn what the club will do at the next meeting and help them learn how many people are coming to help them prepare the art supplies they need. Artists are welcome to bring their own supplies to club meetings if they wish, but the library will provide any necessary supplies. Along with art supplies, the club will provide sketchbooks where members can hold their completed or in-progress artwork with others.

The Art by the Red Club’s first meeting will be held Monday, January 9, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Crookston Public Library. To learn more and stay up to date on the club’s activities, you can go to the Crookston Public Library’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/crookstonpubliclibrary.

SENATOR MARK JOHNSON SWORN INTO SENATE, TAKES MINORITY LEADERSHIP ROLE

johnson-certificate-photo

Senator Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks) took the oath of office on Tuesday as the Minnesota Senate began the 93rd legislative session.

“It’s an exciting day to be here to begin building relationships with each other, and to build Minnesota up to being a greater state,” Johnson told Senators in his floor remarks. “Today we’re turning over a new leaf to help Minnesotans, to be the voice of Minnesota, and to work together on behalf of Minnesota. I hope we can enjoy the ceremony of today because tomorrow, we get to work.”

Senator Johnson was also officially voted in as the Minority Leader for the Senate Republican Caucus. The leadership role gives him ample opportunity to advocate not just for the residents of our district, but also for the entire state. With a $17.6 billion surplus, worker shortages, and families still struggling with inflationary costs, the legislature has many challenges ahead.

“I am ready to bring forth ideas to get the surplus back to the people, address our business and workforce needs, and make sure families can afford to live in this great state, especially in Northwestern Minnesota, where we know many people and businesses can easily move over into North Dakota for lower cost of living and better jobs. We must regain our competitive edge if our part of the state wants to continue to thrive,” Johnson said. “That work is very important to me and our district this session.”

This is Johnson’s third term in the Senate, having first been elected in 2016. He previously served as Deputy Majority Leader for the Senate Republicans from 2021-2022.
