THE RUFFED GROUSE SOCIETY ADDS A NEW CHAPTER IN THE RED RIVER VALLEY

The Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society have added a new chapter to the Red River Valley this year that will encompass Crookston, Climax, Shelly, East Grand Forks, Warren, Fertile, and other cities in the region. The chapter’s headquarters will be here in Crookston but will be named the Red River Valley Ruffed Grouse Society.

The Ruffled Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society is a society that unites conservationists across the northeast and central United States to improve habitat and forest health. The society has existed since 1961 to promote stewardship for forests and wildlife to create landscapes of diverse and functioning forest ecosystems that provide homes for wildlife and opportunities for people to experience them. Along with that, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts who have reached the “sportsman” stage of hunting are using their work and skills to help give back to their local communities.

Local members of the society stated they wished to request a new chapter of the organization in the region to support the local communities, broaden the society’s territory, and make it easier for members of the region to partake in the society, as the next closest chapter is in Bemidji. “What we plan on doing as a chapter is giving back to our communities, Crookston, East Grand Forks, Fisher, hopefully, we can donate to all of them,” Ruffed Grouse Society Chapter President Brian Hanson explained. “We will first be donating to the High School Track Teams.” While there are several chapters in Minnesota already, this will be the farthest west in the state and will be another step for the society to help branch further west across the country. Hanson mentioned that several chapters had disbanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, but now with it on the decline, the chapter saw it as a great time to start a new one for the region. Hanson stated that the chapter is hoping to hold an official chapter banquet within the region soon and will give more information about it soon.

Despite being created recently, the local chapter is starting a fundraiser for the region’s school districts, where they are giving out 100 tickets for a gun raffle by the Upland Gun Company for $100 each. “We’ve got 100 tickets for $100 apiece. The first drawing will be for a $3,000 Upland Gun Company gift card. The Upland Gun Company is a company that’s like a sister company to the Rough Grosse Society, and they let you design your shotgun,” Brain Hanson explained. “The second prize is a $2,000 gift card. These guns are made in Italy, so it’s not something you’re going to take home that night, but at the same time, it’s worth it. It’s a gun of a lifetime. Then we have ten additional $100 winners that will get their money back, so there are twelve total winners, and like I said, all proceeds of this will go back to the community.” To get your ticket, you can contact Chapter President Brian Hanson and set up a meeting for him to give you your ticket for the raffle.

To celebrate its creation and announce the winner of the raffle drawing, the chapter will hold a Birds & Brew meet and greet event on Wednesday, February 8, at the Crookston Eagles Club from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. “It’s called the Birds & Brew Night. Basically, you sit down, talk, and meet new people who are interested in the same thing. You don’t have to be a hunter to do this. The magazine that comes out, there’s cooking articles, volunteering, and things like that, it’s kind of a broad spectrum,” Brian Hanson explained. “If you like hiking, that’s part of the money that nationally goes into it. I think it’s called a Drummer’s fund, and they will put their money into the trail systems in the state forests.” Hanson stated that the event is open to all RGS and AWS members and non-members to attend the event to learn more about the societies and share their experiences about all things upland hunting and wilderness.

President Brian Hanson recommends anyone can become a member of the society to learn more information about the society and local events the chapter is doing. The cost of becoming a member is $35 per year, and members will receive stickers and a subscription to their magazine. To learn more about or join the society, you can visit www.ruffedgrousesociety.org. To learn more about the chapter, the fundraiser, and/or the Birds & Brew event, you can contact Chapter President Brian Hanson at 218-289-2069 or RGS & AWS Regional Engagement Coordinator Sam Tillman at 412-742-5144 or samt@ruffedgrousesociety.org

THE COUNTY LINE- BY POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONER WARREN STRANDELL

warren-strandell-10

The new year is here. With the snow, we no longer need to sweep leaves from the walk. The days are getting longer. And the Polk County budget that was difficult to forge because of several things (the COVID and building problems, in particular) is in place. In general, things are looking up.

On the budget subject, only two people showed up at the County Board’s budget hearing session on the evening of December 13. Do you suppose the ugly weather that day had something to do with that or maybe county residents were happy with the less than four percent levy increase? Probably not, but compare that four percent increase to the national inflation rate increase of more than eight percent, and it isn’t so bad. Costs go up. Everywhere. All the time. We just live with that.

Some things will get a lot better in 2023.
For one thing, the Northwest Regional Corrections Center has reopened the pod that had to be shut down because of a staff shortage caused by the pandemic. As a result, Tri-County Community Corrections is again housing per diem-paying inmates from other jurisdictions. The pandemic had a significant role in the staffing problem.

And the Red River Valley Juvenile Center is now just a few weeks away from reopening, too. If you recall, the “residential side” of the juvenile center
was basically destroyed about a year and a half ago when an out-of-nowhere June rainstorm dropped its load on the building right at the same time as the roof was in the process of being replaced. When staffing demands for keeping just the undamaged “secure side” of the facility open didn’t make sense, the entire center was shut down.

There are some advantages to updating the interior of the residential side of the facility, so that is a plus. But the project ran to more than $1.3 million. An insurance claim is in process. Problems with getting HVCA equipment from the manufacturers have set the juvenile center project back about eight weeks. That equipment finally arrived in late December and should all be installed later this month.

An issue with the reopening of the Juvenile Center, too, has involved training the new corrections officers that were needed to replace those not returning to their jobs. The COVID issue was a factor again. The reopening is slated to occur late this month.

The jail pod closure resulted in the loss of some $400,0000 in revenue from housing prisoners from other jurisdictions. That income offset debt service on the $17.5 million in bonds that were sold to finance the construction of the jail. Those bonds will be paid off in February 2026, now just three years away. Hallelujah.

This will eliminate about $1.3 million a year in debt service. So, with the $400,000 in per diem income money pretty much back in place and the pay-off of the bonds in three years, things look a lot better.

Polk County and the other local government units that operate cities, schools, and townships, do a good job of managing their operations. They find ways to provide needed and required services in the best ways possible. They get things accomplished and find ways to pay their bills in the process.

RIVERVIEW HEALTH SHARES TOP BABY NAMES OF 2022

riverview-health-79

From Adeline to Zoey, Aaron to Zephyr, and a little bit of everything in-between, nearly 100 babies were born at RiverView Health in 2022.

The top name of 2022 for baby girls born at RiverView was Evelyn or Evelynn, as one little one’s moniker is spelled. Harper and Emersyn were close behind in a tie for second place. The boys also saw a tie, but this time for first place, with the names Jonah and Owen.

Elijah started the 2022 births with a January 3 delivery, while Ruth wrapped up the year with a birth date of December 28. Girls outnumbered boys by six.

According to babynames.com, Olivia and Liam were the most popular baby names across the United States in 2022. Those names went unused at RiverView in 2022. However, babynames.com reports that Evelyn was the only name to crack the top 10 list in 2022, pushing Harper off the list. Looking at other lists, Nameberry reported Arlo as the fastest-rising name across the English-speaking world, currently ranking in the Top 50 in Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, and England. A boy named Arlo was born at RiverView in 2022. Today.com lists the name August as the top name in the cool classics category – a girl born at RiverView in 2022 is named August.

Team Baby

RiverView’s outstanding Obstetrics (OB) Team delivered these newborns into the world. Dr. Erik Kanten and Dr. Lauren Rose are family medicine physicians and OB providers. Dr. Kanten has been delivering babies in Crookston for well over 30 years. In many cases, he has delivered both the newborn and the newborn’s parents. Dr. Rose began her practice at RiverView in 2021.

Crookston native Dr. Kari Wessman rounds out the team of physicians. Dr. Wessman specializes in gynecology and obstetrics. Over the years, she has delivered many, many sets of multiples and led women through high-risk pregnancies. She is predicting a baby boom at RiverView in mid-January of 2023.

The trio of providers sees patients for office visits in RiverView Clinics in Crookston, Fertile, Red Lake Falls, and East Grand Forks.

Of course, RiverView’s labor and delivery nurses are a huge part of every pregnancy journey and delivery. These nurses are compassionate and knowledgeable and with the patient every step of the way. A private nurse stays with the delivering patient throughout labor and delivery, focusing only on the mom and baby.

First Class Care, Facility

RiverView Hospital, built in 2020, includes an OB Unit with three labor and delivery rooms (with a fourth if needed). Each room has a private bathroom, a large floor plan to allow caregivers space to provide exceptional patient care and comfortable accommodations for family and friends wanting to stay close.

The Unit includes enhanced technology, allowing mom and baby to be monitored in-room or remotely from the nurses’ station or even the OB provider’s office.

The family area has a sleeping room to support family bonding and 24-hour rooming with the baby.

The OB Unit also houses a nursery/procedure room just off the nurses’ station for little ones needing closer monitoring. Security is a high priority, with an enhanced infant security system in place.

RiverView Health is a great place to bring new life into the world. If you would like more information on OB services at RiverView, call 281-9200. For a peek at some of the babies born in Crookston, check out the website at riverviewhealth.org and look under the Little Stars heading. Watch for news of the first baby of 2023 in the weeks to come.

5.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Northern California for second time in less than 2 weeks

shutterstock_1522941431

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (“USGS”), a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California on Sunday morning in an area where one struck less than two weeks ago. A 6.4 earthquark struck the region on Dec. 20, killing two people.

The USGS said the quake about 30 miles south of Eureka and was centered about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell and ocurred at 11:35 a.m. PDT. The earthquake occurring at a depth of about 17.3 miles, according to preliminary information from the agency. Rio Dell, with a population of 3,367, is 267.5 miles north of Sacramento.

According to the California Department of Transportation, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Route 211 was temporarily closed as inspectors checked a bridge that crosses the Eel River in Humboldt County for damage.

Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes told CNN: “It was crazy. The earthquake felt more violent this time. It was shorter, but more violent. My refrigerator moved 2 feet. Things came out of the refrigerator. There’s a crack in my wall from the violence of it.” In the earlier quake, Garnes said 27 homes were red-tagged, meaning they were unsafe due to damage, and 73 homes were yellow-tagged in Rio Dell.
