CROOKSTON HOSTING TWO HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS THIS WEEKEND

The Crookston Visitors Bureau is working with the Crookston Park and Rec Department and Crookston Blue Line Club in preparing for two youth hockey tournaments being held at the Crookston Sports Center.

Crookston will host the 15U A Olympic Regional Girls Hockey Tournament with six teams competing, and they will also host the Squirt A District tournament, with both being held March 3-5.

The groups have been trying to plan events or opportunities for these visitors to do during the downtime between games.
“There will be some events coming, we will obviously have hockey events, and then we’re looking at doing a spaghetti feed at the Crookston Inn on the fourth and things around the rink,” said Crookston Park and Rec Director Jake Solberg. “The Crookston Community Pool should be open at times; we’re looking at opening some times for kids to go swim when they have an opportunity to.”
The Crookston hotels are full of hockey guests this weekend.

Crookston Park and Recreation have purchased visitor bags to be given to every hockey player competing in the tournaments.  Around 160 hockey players will be competing in the tournaments, and with the addition of family and friends coming to watch, the number of guests could exceed 500. To help with this, the Visitor’s Bureau is asking area businesses if they would like to offer coupon deals at their place of business, which would be included in the bags that are handed out.
“Our town should be busy, and hopefully, our little economy in our town, stores, restaurants, gas stations, and stuff will be ready to go,” said Solberg.

A flyer of the games and schedule of the Squirt A District tournament can be seen below-

POLK COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH ENCOURAGES CITIZENS TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES OF THEIR SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

polk-county-public-health-logo-1772653

Change your clocks, and change your batteries! Polk County Public Health and Norman-Mahnomen Public Health encourage community members to change their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector batteries when turning ahead of the clock on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Smoke and CO detectors save lives every day, but many families do not check their detectors routinely. Remember, having one and not checking it or replacing it in a timely fashion puts your family at risk.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas that often goes undetected in homes. CO poisoning occurs when the gas builds up in your home, fish house, garage, or cabin/boat. Sources of CO include furnaces/boilers, gas stoves, fireplaces (BOTH wood and gas burning), water heaters, clothes dryers, wood stoves, power generators, motor vehicles, and power tools/lawn equipment. Recreational sources are camp stoves, grills, lanterns, boats, heaters, and generators.

Since CO is odorless, tasteless, and colorless, it can be hard to tell if there is CO buildup. Initial symptoms of CO poisoning resemble the flu, such as headache and shortness of breath that worsen with continued exposure. Symptoms progress to severe headache, dizziness, fatigue, and nausea, then confusion, irritability, impaired judgment, and coordination culminating in the loss of consciousness.

CO detectors save lives, but like many other things, they have an expiration date. Most CO detectors are good for an average of 5-7 years. Check your product packaging or go online to check the manufacturer’s website to determine how long the CO detector is safe to use. Remember, many plug-in detectors also have a battery backup, be sure to check your detector and replace the battery.

Polk County Public Health and Norman-Mahnomen Public Health offer Healthy Homes Assessments, a health and safety assessment of a home completed by a trained nurse. This service is provided free of charge for residents of Polk, Norman, or Mahnomen County and includes privately owned or rental homes. For more information, please contact Polk County Public Health at 218-281-3385 or Norman Mahnomen Public Health at 218-280-3125.

REGIONAL RED CROSS MARKS 80TH ANNUAL AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH

unnamed-4436399

This March marks the 80th annual American Red Cross Month. The Minnesota and Dakotas Red Cross is honoring all those who provide relief and hope when help can’t wait during emergencies and encouraging everyone to get involved.

Today’s Red Cross volunteers — more than 2,000 in the Minnesota and Dakotas region — blood donors and financial supporters are advancing the lifesaving legacy of Clara Barton, who founded the American Red Cross more than 140 years ago. Her vision to prevent and alleviate human suffering has never wavered.

Since then, people have rallied to help during emergencies, providing relief and hope for neighbors in need. This humanitarian spirit is at the heart of local communities as well as the work of the Red Cross. People can help strengthen local communities by becoming a volunteer, giving blood, or taking lifesaving skills classes, such as first aid, CPR, and how to use an AED. To get started with any of these activities, visit redcross.org/mndaks.

PREVENT A BLOOD SHORTAGE When volunteer blood donors lend an arm this March, they’ll help keep the blood supply from dropping this spring. All who come to give blood, platelets, or plasma March 1-31, 2023, will receive a $10 Visa® Prepaid Card by email.* Plus, they’ll be automatically entered for a chance to win a $3,000 Visa Prepaid Card – which could help toward expenses like gas or groceries. There will be five lucky winners.* To find a blood drive near you, go to redcrossblood.org.

RED CROSS GIVING DAY On March 22, people can also join the annual Red Cross Giving Day campaign by donating at redcross.org/givingday to help provide shelter, food, relief items, emotional support, and other assistance for people affected by disasters, big and small.

SENATOR KLOBUCHAR MEETS WITH TWO MINNESOTA VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS HONORED WITH NATIONAL AMERICAN LEGION AWARD

image_50453249-448x420488767-1

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) met with Dr. Patricia Dickmann and Mr. Gobind Tarchand, two medical professionals from the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, who are being honored with the American Legion’s “Physician of the Year” and “Healthcare Provider of the Year” awards respectively. The American Legion has provided these awards to two Department of Veterans Affairs employees from across the nation since 2017; this year, both recipients are from Minnesota. Dr. Dickmann and Mr. Tarchand received their awards from Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Minnesota native Denis McDonough during the American Legion’s 63rd Annual Washington Conference Commander’s Call today.

“When we ask our servicemembers to defend our nation, we make a promise to take care of them when they return home. Part of that promise is ensuring that our veterans can access the quality health care and benefits they deserve,” said Klobuchar. “I had the opportunity to congratulate Dr. Dickmann and Mr. Tarchand on their well-deserved awards and to thank them for providing exceptional health care to our veterans.”

Dr. Dickmann, who received the “Physician of the Year” award, is the medical director of the Minneapolis VA Health Care system’s (VAHCS) opioid treatment program, addiction recovery services, and mental health homeless program.

Mr. Tarchand, who received the “Health Care Provider of the Year” award, currently serves as the director of the Minneapolis VA’s hematology/oncology clinic and as the Minneapolis VAHCS’ facility lead physician assistant.

Dr. Dickmann and Mr. Tarchand received these awards for their tremendous service to our veterans. One colleague described Dr. Dickmann as the “embodiment of VA values. [She] cares for each veteran with all her attention and energy.” Mr. Tarchand’s colleagues called him “one of the most highly skilled, caring, and dedicated health care providers [I] have ever worked with.”

Photos of Klobuchar’s meeting with Dr. Dickmann and Mr. Tarchand are available HERE. Video from the American Legion’s Washington Conference Commander Call is available HERE.

Klobuchar has long led efforts to ensure that veterans and servicemembers receive the health care and benefits they need. Last year, she worked to successfully pass the SFC Heath Robinson Honoring Our PACT Act last year, historic legislation that will deliver comprehensive relief to all generations of veterans who were exposed to toxins for the first time in our nation’s history. The legislation, signed into law last August, includes Klobuchar and Senator Mike Crapo’s (R-ID) Toxic Exposure Training Act, a bipartisan bill to improve education and training for Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare personnel to treat illnesses related to exposure to burn pits and other toxic substances.

Additionally, Klobuchar recently introduced legislation to expand access to colorectal cancer screenings for toxic-exposed service members. The Barbosa Act, named after former Army Captain Rafael Barbosa, would authorize the Department of Defense to provide servicemembers who have been exposed to burn pits or other toxins with preventive colorectal screenings. Under the PACT Act, the Department of Veterans Affairs now considers any gastrointestinal cancer as “presumptive” or caused by service and exposure to burn pits.
