MINNESOTA SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION SETS FEBRUARY AS MINNESOTA SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH

school-board-social-distance495681

The Minnesota School Boards Association has set February as Minnesota School Board Recognition Month to build awareness and understanding of the vital function elected school board members to play in our society. The Crookston School District is joining other public school districts from across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Month to honor local board members for their commitment to Crookston and its students.

“Strong schools help build strong communities – and the Crookston School Board devotes countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn at a higher level,” Dave Kuehn, Interim Superintendent, said. “School board members make the difficult decisions every month – and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations to provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.”

Kuehn said the key work of boards is to raise student achievement by:

  • Creating a vision for what the community wants the school district to be and for making student achievement the top priority;
  • Establishing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to do;
  • Ensuring progress is measured to be sure the district’s goals are achieved, and students are learning at expected levels;
  • Being accountable for their decisions and actions by continually tracking and reporting results;
  • Creating a safe, orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach;
  • Forming partnerships with others in the community to solve common problems; and
  • Focusing attention on the need for continuous improvement by questioning, refining, and revising issues related to student achievement.

“Even though we’re making a special effort to show our appreciation this month, school board members’ work is a year-round commitment,” Kuehn said.

School Board members serving our district and their years of service are as follows: Marcia Meine (new), Patti Dillabough (8 years), Mike Theis (3 years), Dave Davidson (6 years), Tim Dufault (12 years) and Frank Fee (14 Years).

The Anaheim Police Department is investigating the death of a woman who fell from the ‘Mickey and Friends Parking Structure’ in Disneyland, CA on Saturday. Anaheim police Sgt. Jon McClintock and the Anaheim Fire Department responded around 6:50 p.m. to a report of an individual who “jumped off or fell from” the parking structure. First responders reportedly found a woman lying on the ground and began providing aid; the woman was brought to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The woman’s identity was not released, and it was unclear whether she was a guest at the theme park. An investigation into the circumstances of the woman’s death is underway.

The Mickey and Friends Parking Structure is the main guest parking facility at Disneyland, standing seven-stories tall and having room for more than 10,000 vehicles. When it opened in 2000 is was the largest parking structure in the United States. Saturday’s incident is the second in three months involving someone falling to their death from a Disneyland parking structure. In December, a man in his 50s fell from the Mickey and Friends lot,  who police said died “likely” died by suicide; and at least three other individuals have died after jumping since the structure opened.

Police in Bucks County have arrested a teen suspect in the killing of a Temple University police officer on Saturday near the campus in Philadelphia.  At approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, an unidentified 18-year-old white man was taken into custody at a family home in Buckingham Township in relation to the shooting. Temple University’s police association confirmed on Twitter that there had been an apprehension.

Jennifer Griffin, Temple University’s vice president for public safety, said in a statement: “Earlier this morning, an 18-year-old person of interest was taken into custody in connection with last night’s tragic murder of a Temple University Police Officer.”  Griffin identified the officer as Christopher David Fitzgerald, who was hired by the university in October 2021. Fitzgerald was shot while on duty and was pronounced dead at the Temple University Hospital. Griffin said: “Officer Fitzgerald gave his life to selflessly serve and defend this community. The courage and bravery he displayed highlights the day-to-day sacrifice made by our Temple University Police Officers to keep our community safe. This loss leaves an enormous hole in all of our hearts. He was a father, a husband, a son, a colleague, and a friend.”

Temple University president Jason Wingard said in a statement that Fitzgerald was shot while trying to apprehend a robbery suspect at 1700 W. Montgomery Avenue. The suspect fled the scene, according to Wingard, adding: “This loss comes at a time when gun violence continues its horrific impact on our city and our country. Philadelphia and the nation are dealing with an unprecedented epidemic of violence, and the tragedy that took place tonight is a gut-wrenching reminder of our police officers’ daily bravery and sacrifices to protect our students, faculty, staff and community.”

Actor and comedian Richard Belzer passed away on Feb. 19 at age 78. Belzer passed away at his home in Bozouls in southwest France. Writer Bill Scheft, a longtime friend of the actor, told The Hollywood Reporter, “He had lots of health issues … and his last words were, ‘F–k you, motherf–ker.’”

John Munch—whether on Homicide or Law & Order: SVU—over four decades will never forget how much he inhabited that beloved character to make it his own. His professionalism, talents and dedication to the craft made him a pillar in the industry, but it was his humor, compassion and loving heart that made him family. Our condolences go out to his loved ones as we join them in mourning his loss, but also in celebrating his memory.”

CROOKSTON CITY HALL IMPLEMENTS NEW SALARY SCHEDULE FOR 2023

Crookston City Hall has begun implementing changes to its City Hall Salary Schedule for several of its employees and department heads after it was approved at the City Council meeting on Monday, February 13. The schedule can be seen below-

The positions that have seen increases in their salaries include the city’s Finance Director, City Accountant, Human Resource Coordinator, Public Works Director and Superintendent, Water Superintendent, Building Official, Executive Administrative Assistant, Parks & Recreation Director and Supervisor, Pool Manager, Police Chief, and Deputy Police Chief. With their increases ranging from a 3.5% increase to a 22.9% increase.
The salary changes are due to the results of the League of Minnesota Cities Wage and Compensation Package study they used to help with the tax levy at the end of 2022.
“We obtained that data by selecting approximately eight cities that we think are comparable to Crookston in terms of population, geography, and nature of services provided. Then we tried to measure the salaries that we paid at these positions relative to the average of those eight cities,” City Administrator Corky Reynolds explained. “Then we tried to get our positions to the average, not the highest or lowest, but an average. For some of these positions, we realized we were low compared to other cities, so there was a wage adjustment for these positions in our city.”
The city had authorized and passed a 3.5% raise to their salaries that was generally applied to all positions within the city in their 2022 budget. This caused some positions to receive the adjustment in addition to a 3.5% increase. Certain positions have not received an adjustment to their salary (City Administrator, Crookston Fire Chief, Information Technology Director, and Community Development Director) as the individuals in those positions stated they were comfortable with their salaries from the previous year and chose to accept that salary level again for 2023.

Nearly all of these listed positions are non-union positions. However, the Crookston Police Chief and Deputy Police Chief positions are a part of the Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) union, which the city has negotiated with in the past.
“What we determined to do was raise those two positions (Police Chief and Deputy Police Chief) consistent with the 3.5% increase that the union received and then if there was a wage adjustment in the union contract. That percentage wage adjustment was also applied to the Police Chief and Deputy Police Chief positions to arrive at our figure for their salary,” said Reynolds. “So any wage adjustment that occurred in the union contract, we applied to the Police Chief and Deputy Police Chief not because of the agreement covering these positions, but to be consistent and maintain a consistent salary structure. Internally we applied those adjustments, if any, and percentage increase.”
The city has not made any adjustments to the Crookston Fire Chief’s salary as the contract with the Fire Union hasn’t been settled yet, but there likely won’t be any change to the Fire Chief’s salary as Chief Heldstab had negotiated his current salary with the city when he took the position at the start of the year.

These salaries will be for the entire 2023 calendar year based on the League of Minnesota Cities study and the city’s internal comparisons. This structure will continue into 2024 to give the city a predetermined understanding of what will happen in 2024. But the city made these adjustments to the salary to help make Crookston more competitive with other local cities.
“I attempted to create competitive salaries. We understand that these positions are very important,” said Reynolds. “We want to make payments commensurate with the importance of these positions and that the individuals occupying those positions want to be here with the City at a salary level that makes them competitive with other cities and provides them with a reasonable basis for continuing to work with us.”
