SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

Congratulations to the Crookston School District and its residents on passing the multi-use athletic complex referendum by 304 votes on Tuesday!!!  The no votes went down more than 100 from the first vote, and that was great to see.

There were 225 absentee ballots and 1,491 people voting in person for a total of 1,716 votes, with 1,010 yes votes to 706 no votes.   The referendum passes by 304 votes.

The ballot asked voters to vote for a $4,965,000 referendum.

The estimated costs for the project are $4,964,671 with a bond issue total of $4,965,000, with the artificial turf field’s construction costing $1,182,000 and the track’s construction costing $837,000.  The grandstand and press box’s installation cost $387,000, the lighting/electrical work cost $715,000, and the Site work cost $924,000.  The construction cost for the Concessions Stands and Bathrooms would be $178,000, with other contingency costs equaling about $741,571.

The community could start seeing some work done behind the school as soon as this summer once a proper plan is made.  “You don’t want to put everything ahead of things.  We needed to pass the referendum, and I think the next step is to plan accordingly.  As we get the information, we will share that with our stakeholders, but they’ll definitely see some action behind the school this summer with dirt work and things happening.  Hopefully, they’ll be able to provide us with more completion or timeline in terms of how all of those pieces, the field, work of the field, artificial turf, bleachers, press box, and the track, how all of those things will come together, and hopefully, the best scenarios we can do some things this fall,” Kuehn explained.  “We’re working on a timeline sometimes that construction is not always as fast as it used to be, and sometimes securing certain materials have been more difficult to get.  Hopefully, we’ll know more as we work with our architect and construction manager on putting together an appropriate timeline.”

The first time the district asked the voters to pass a referendum in August 2022, it failed by nine votes (842 to 833).

Kuehn and the Crookston School District thank all who came out to support the referendum passing for the district and the community.  “On behalf of the district, just a huge thank you,” said Kuehn.  “We’re very humbled and appreciative that we can move forward and put a very awesome facility out the back doors of our High School, and something I think, for many years, will be a great place for our youth, school district programs, Phy Ed. Classes to have the ability to use it throughout the school year.”

Bemidji High School football assistant coach, and an all-around great guy, Jim McKeon passed away unexpectedly over the weekend after suffering a heart attack/stroke while ice fishing with his son. The son tried to revive him, but was unsuccessful.
The McKeon family lost Gianna in January 2022 at the age of 10 after being diagnosed in February 2021 with telangiectatic osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
The longtime BHS coach won the Butch Nash award at the 2022 Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame banquet in Minneapolis. The honor is given to assistant coaches in the state who play a prominent role in their school’s football program and own qualities that make them “the epitome of the ideal assistant coach.”

MAILBAG

I received the following from a Crookston Pirate Coach on Wednesday morning.  It was one of three people that contacted me about the end of the Pirate vs. Red Lake Falls game.

I wasn’t there so I am not commenting on it, other than every report says the Crookston players and fans didn’t represent Crookston well after the goal and that is disappointing.  It sounds like most players and fans were good.  But it only takes a player or two and a few fans to ruin the experience of a great well-played game by both teams.  Up to that point I had a blast listening to the call on the radio!!
With that said, I am pretty certain it cost Crookston a home game because the Pirates had beaten Park Rapids and tied with them and still were seeded lower.  Coaches knew what happened in the game, and that came back to bite them.  I am a firm believer in Karma, and it is a sun-of-a-gun.  Plus, I really like and respect Trevor Page as a person and a coach.  He runs a tight ship and has good kids that work hard and represent their school and city at a high level every night.

But for future reference, I CANNOT do anything about a player or parent’s bevior.  (Unless it is my kid or my family) I am a lowly radio guy.  All complaints in cases like this NEED to go to Crookston High School A.D. and Superintendent Dave Kuehn.  Actions like this by Pirate student-athletes and parents SHOULD NOT be allowed, and should be reprimanded, including a benching, if all the complaints I have received are true.
I had a kid get kicked out of a C-Squad tournament in Fosston last weekend, and I was not there.   An Ada-Borup kid had Matthew Contreras in a headlock/chokehold, and my son went over to help him and the Ada kid and my son pushed each other, trying to protect each other’s teammates.  Both kids got kicked out.  Nothing cheap by either team.  Calling a technical foul on both players was probably a good message to send, even though there wasn’t malicious intent behind each push.  Kicking them out was a terrible call, and the official needs better comprehension of what is going on during the play.
It was extremely poorly handled by the official.  By all reports from both coaches and parents of both sides, neither should have been kicked out.
But it was a valuable lesson learned for my son.  Even though we tell him to stick up and help teammates, you have to be smarter on the floor, and it is a lesson learned for him at a young age, and hopefully, he learns from it.

The Section 8A Girls Hockey championship game is on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  KROX will have the game on KROX Radio and the KROX video stream with a pre-game at 6:20 p.m.

Crookston is 17-6-2 on the year and has had two lopsided losses to Warroad this season.  But, the two losses have been more competitive this year than they were last year, so there is more optimism going into this years rematch in the championship game.  Crookston played one of their better games in the semi-finals with a 5-0 win over Thief River Falls.  It was the kick in the breezes the Pirates needed going into their toughest game of the year.  Warroad is Warroad.  They have a Ms. Hockey candidate in the transfer from Fargo, and that top line of three Division 1 commits is something nobody can duplicate.   How does Crookston slow them down?  Because you’re not going to stop them.

They are going to have the play the best and most physical defense they have played all year.  At the same time, they are going to find ways to score.  In last week’s column, We said Crookston has had a hard time scoring against the top teams they have played.  It is time to shake that off and show what they are made of.  They will need to get shots on goal and crash the boards like Dennis Rodman (no regard for your body) and stuff that puck in the net.  The Warroad goalie has shown susceptibility when teams get the puck on the net, so Crookston has to get pucks deep and shots on goal, preferably not at the goalie, but even so, crashing the net is going to be huge!
Crookston can’t commit penalties.  They can’t compete with the top Warroad line without all five skaters on the ice.  Nobody can!

Say what you want about David (Izzy) Marvin, but he is a helluva coach and demands 110 percent every practice and game.  He has built a machine!!! This game is still a case of David and Goliath, and I think Crookston is going to have a bigger stone in the sling on Thursday night.  It should be a high-level girls hockey game, and you won’t want to miss it.

KROX will have it on the radio with Hall of Famer Frank Fee with the play-by-play.  We will also have it video streamed and the link to watch is below.

The Section 8A Wrestling Team tournament semi-finals and Championship will be held on Friday at Fertile-Beltrami Gymnasium.

Semi-finals at 6:00 p.m.
#1 Frazee vs #5 Crookston (ON KROX RADIO at 5:20 p.m.)
#2 UNC vs #3 Fosston/Bagley

Championship is at 7:30 p.m.

The semi-finals should be two great matches.  Crookston has a full line-up now with an open weight at 170 pounds.  The Pirates should be able to make up at least a 12-point swing with Frazee, so it should be an exciting match on KROX Radio.
UNC and Fosston/Bagley will be one that could come down to the last matches of the dual.  All I know is if you want to watch some great wrestling, Fertile-Beltrami High School is the place to be on Friday.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL BOARD SUSPENDS SEARCH FOR NEXT SUPERINTENDENT UNTIL FALL

crookstonpublicschoolslogo136627

The Crookston Public School Board met for a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon in the Crookston High School District Office Conference Room.

MAIN AGENDA

The board began the meeting by scheduling the canvassing of the election results from February 14’s election for the public multiuse facility referendum. The board then began discussing their next steps for the outdoor multiuse complex. The main subject was that the school was starting to try and purchase specific items for the referendum.
“Today, we let the board know that we’ve already started trying to find some items. What happens with some of the items, which would be the track surface, the bleachers, the press box, and the artificial turf, we work with different entities that provide state contracts, so we don’t have to go out and bid,” Interim Superintendent Dave Kuehn explained. “Usually, for these companies, by being part of the state bid, they also offer some discounts, so we’re hoping to get some very competitive pricing for those three areas. For the other items, the lighting, fencing, dirt work, and concessions stand area will be bid out and part of more of the construction part. For those main core pieces would be purchased, and we can hopefully get some good, competitive prices through this opportunity to use state bid process.”
The school currently doesn’t have a proper timeline for its completion. Keuhn shared that the school could hold some potential matches for football or soccer games by the fall, but the track would not be ready even by the spring of 2024.

Selecting Superintendent finalists

The board finished the meeting by making decisions about the finalists for the first round of interviews for the next superintendent for the district. The board invited Lee Warren of the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA), who presented that three candidates had given their profiles to the Association, and after reviewing them, they recommended one specific candidate. However, one of the candidates had taken a job at another district which left the board only with two. Warren gave them three suggestions on what they should do with their search, the first being to move forward with interviewing the candidates they had. Another option they had was to extend their application deadline by three weeks to allow any other candidates to apply for the job, as several other districts had ended their searches, leaving many candidates still searching for the job. The final option was to have the school suspend its search back to the MSBA, and they would reopen it again in the fall.
“The board didn’t feel comfortable with just the two, and we didn’t want to extend the search because, in three weeks, we figured what more would we get that hadn’t applied the first time. So, the other option we had was to suspend the search for the superintendent for another year until next fall,” School Board Chairperson Frank Fee explained. “The Minnesota School Board Association will conduct that search with no extra charge because of that. So we voted unanimously to do that and will start in October or November of next year looking for a full-time Superintendent, and hopefully, the pool will be bigger, and we will be able to find someone who will fit our needs.”
A news release by the Minnesota School Board Association can be seen below-

Crookston, MN — The Crookston School Board has voted to suspend the search for their next superintendent due to a lack of applicants. The board action included securing an interim superintendent to serve the district for the 2023 – 2024 school year.

The School Board will begin the search process again late next fall with their intention to secure a new superintendent beginning in July of 2024.

The board also agreed that with the passing of the public referendum on Tuesday, the time wouldn’t be proper for the school to hire a new superintendent right away. “We have a whole big new project coming up, we stick a new Superintendent in there, and the project of Washington moving over to Highland and that new addition over there,” said Fee. “It’s just too much to hit a new Superintendent with, so we’re going to look for an interim Superintendent, and hopefully, we’ll find the right match for that.”

The board approved the motion unanimously.

The Crookston School Board will next meet for another Special meeting on Thursday, February 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the Crookston High School District Office Conference Room.

Athlete of the Week – Addie Fee

addie-fee-athlete-of-the-week755779

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey player Addie Fee. The sophomore is tied for 4th on the team in Goals and is 2nd in total points this season with 31.

In the Pirates most recent game, Fee helped the team advance to the Section 8A Championship scoring 4 goals in their 5-0 win over Thief River Falls. “I’ve never scored four goals in a game before so I was honestly just shocked as it was happening,” said Fee.

Addie Fee

Pirates coach Emily Meyer has been impressed with the way Fee has played all season, and while scoring four goals in one game is rare, the performance is just another example of what Fee is capable of. “I think more than anything that performance shows what she is capable of, and she is another player that can score,” said coach Meyer. She’s a fantastic player, and it’s been fun to watch her grow.”

Crookston will now square off with Warroad in the Section 8A Championship tomorrow night, a matchup the Pirates have been waiting for since the Warriors ended Crookston’s season a year ago. “We have all had the same goal in mind from the start of the season, and that was to make the State Tournament,” said Fee. “I think that will serve us well in the game and we will be ready for them.”

The Section 8A Championship from Warroad this Thursday night will begin at 7:00 p.m. and we will have the game both on KROX Radio, and the KROX Live Video Stream with the RiverView Health pregame show starting at 6:15 PM. Fee and the rest of the Pirates are prepared and ready to take the next step and knock the Warriors off.

CROOKSTON COMMUNITY FOOD BASKET COMMITTEE RECEIVES RIVERVIEW’S REACHING OUT TO SERVE AWARD

The Crookston Community Food Basket Committee was recently awarded RiverView Health’s 2022 Reaching Out to Serve Award for its 30+ years of providing meals and nutrition for local families.

For over 30 years, RiverView has recognized individuals, groups, and programs with the Reaching Out to Serve Award. The award symbolizes RiverView’s mission of serving the region while demonstrating innovativeness voluntary of self-initiated efforts and improving the access, quality, or cost-effectiveness of healthcare.

Helping Families at Christmas

The idea for the program came from Deloryce Bertils in the late 1980s in conjunction with the Trinity Lutheran Church Social Concern Board. Created to help families during the Christmas season, donations were sought initially from local churches by putting out boxes for food donations.

In the early 2000s, Deloryce handed the idea to new committee members and chairpersons, and the Crookston Community Food Basket Committee was formed. At that time, food donation changed to people and businesses donating money, allowing food to be purchased in volume at Hugo’s and Walmart.

Due to COVID-19, there were no food baskets in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, a challenge was created by local high school student-athletes to raise money to go with the regular donations, resulting in gift cards for families. In 2022, 268 families received gift cards for a total of $14,665.

Working Together

Many organizations have helped over the years, including local 4-H clubs, RiverView nursing home, Leo Club, Books for Kids, Trinity release time kids, Our Saviors and Cathedral Schools, Spokley Potatoes, American Crystal, North Country Food Banks, Regional Sanitation, Greg Garman and student-athletes, Highland 6th graders, Hugo’s, KROX, and many others too numerous to mention.

Marlene Leblanc accepted the award on behalf of the committee. She stated: “We wouldn’t be able to accomplish what we do without the help of our committee members and also from the individuals and businesses in the community who donate and help out with this project. So thank you very much.’’

Committee members are Jim and Kathy Borkowski, Ray and Terry Dusek, Pete and Ann Graham, Gerry and Jackie Lindsay, Greg and Marlene LeBlanc, Jean Tate, Scott and Julie Kleven, and Shelamar Henderson/Tri-Valley.

CROOKSTON BENEDICTINE NURSE CINDY MEYER WINS CAREGIVER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Long-time Crookston Nurse Cindy Meyer was recently recognized in Minneapolis at the Leading Age of Minnesota Institute and Expo as the “Caregiver of the Year,” an elite award given to one exceptional professional in elder care in Minnesota. Benedictine Living Community-Crookston, formally Villa St. Vincent, nominated Meyer for the award after decades of dedicated service as an LPN.

The Caregiver of the Year Award honors individuals in older adult services who demonstrate exceptional commitment to older adults and enrich the quality of life of those in their care. Meyer was selected for the prestigious award out of a field of more than 60,000 professional caregivers in LeadingAge Minnesota’s membership.

“Cindy Meyer is a career caregiver, devoting the last 36 years to her residents and coworkers at Benedictine Living Community in Crookston,” says Kari Thurlow, President, and CEO, LeadingAge Minnesota.

“We are so excited for Cindy.” States Benedictine-Crookston’s Executive Director Lindsey Erdman. “Cindy has been a faithful, expert, skilled, and compassionate nurse for many decades. She has excelled at all the areas of work she has been assigned over the years. From her creative education offerings as the Inservice Director and CPR instructor to providing bedside nursing care to her current role as our Summit Assisted Living Team Lead. You can always count on Cindy.”

Cindy was a 1978 graduate of Crookston Central High. She started her career at Riverview Hospital as a Patient Helper from 1983-1985, and when that position was no longer recognized, she came to the Villa as a CNA. She received a scholarship from the Villa to become an LPN, finishing in 1987 from the East Grand Forks AVTI. She worked a year at Riverview while waiting for full-time to open up for a Villa LPN floor nurse, returning in 1988 working various positions. The past 21 years as the Team Lead in the Summit Assisted Living. She eyes retirement; but has no concrete plans yet, which is “just fine with us,” according to a smiling Erdman.

Janet Wall Denison, whose beloved parents Lee and Sharon Wall, and grandmother, Lillian Wall, were all residents of the Summit, and Villa, eagerly spoke out on Cindy’s behalf during the nomination process. “Cindy Meyer is the hands and heart of loving care. Her unfailing hopeful, calming presence was balm to my heart hundreds of times throughout the years. She was there just to say “hi” and see that each one of my dear loved ones were well cared for when I arrived for a visit. She was there when my loved one needed extra attention and assurance. And, mostly, she took amazing care of their health day in and day out. I always knew it!

Cindy goes on to say, “I have worked next to the best. Many are great friends, several who are retiring now. I have met countless individuals in our care that have touched my life and made me who I am. I have worked all shifts and what feels like all jobs, and it has all been such a blessing. I have enjoyed serving countless people who have come and gone from our home here in the heart of the Red River Valley, and it seems more and more; my own friends and beloved family are seeking care from our team.”

“Thank you to my husband Mark, who has been by my side since our high school days. Our four children: Carisa Wright/her husband, Scott. Brett Meyer/friend Angie, Jennifer Delvecchio/husband Joseph and Emily for understanding all those times I was taking care of others. Thanks to my 5 Grandchildren, Emma, Ashtin, Brodie, Jayden, and Hadley, for bringing me so much joy and, of course, my parents Mary and (the late) Ronald Solheim, and my brothers and sisters for supporting me all the way. And a big thank you to BLC Crookston-you have been good to me as we took care of each other for 36 years. The award presentation was a grand celebration and made me feel so special. This moment will be with me for a lifetime.”

Meyer accepted the award at the LeadingAge Minnesota Institute, the state’s largest and most comprehensive aging services conference. More than 3,000 professionals in all aspects of older adult services attend the annual three-day event to learn about new and innovative programs, share best practices, and network with their peers.
