CHS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CLASS CREATES NEW DESK FOR HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE OFFICE

img-7851364466

Three students from the Crookston High School’s Community Projects Class have created another project for the High School as part of the class’s work to create projects that help the community and the school. Seniors Ryan Abeld, Hunter Kresl, and junior Evin Trudeau have built an addition to the main desk at the High School’s Guidance Office to make it look like the front admissions desk at the entrance of the school and the admissions desk for the Crookston Sports Center.

The High School has been looking to change nearly all of the main desks to have a Pirate ship look to the school, but rather than create the whole desk from scratch, the students decided to add the “Pirate Ship” around the desk. “It started out as just a plain desk. Was very generic, almost gross and ugly, and Travis (Oliver) decided to make it more spiced up if you would,” Senior Hunter Kresl explained. “We resided it, made it look fancy, put a new top on it, and turned it from an old, crusty desk to something brand new and will be used forever.” To complete the project, the students worked closely with the guidance counselors to learn what additions they wanted to have added to their desk. Such as what kind of stain and wood they wanted, along with other requests to make the desk look the way they wanted.

Kresl then went into the process of adding the attachment to the desk and how they improved it over the original desk. “We started by cutting all of the boards to fit and puzzle-pieced them together with different sizes and lengths,” Kresl explained. “Then we put a little glue on the back, and then we went into pin-nailing them on with a spacer in-between them to make it look like an old ship’s deck.” The students used hickory wood for the top of the desk and alder wood for its sides and front.

The three students agreed that the project came out well and are happy they got to share it with the school’s guidance counselors and are considering creating more projects for the office in the future. “I feel pretty good about this project. We did have some errors here and there, but my boss Morgan Terpstra told me once. You’re going to have mistakes in life, and you have to work around them,” Senior Ryan Abeld explained. “Hopefully, we can be back in here again because the counselors gave us chocolate bars, so hopefully, our next project is back in here, and we can stretch it out as long as we can,” Kresl joked.

We will continue to check back in with the Community Projects class and its students when they have the latest projects completed.

Pictures of the students and the desk can be seen below-

The Crookston Public Schools public vote for the multiuse facility referendum is underway at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The polls opened this morning at 7:00 a.m. and have seen a steady intake of voters since they opened the doors. “It’s been very steady this morning. People were waiting in line when we got ready to go, and we’re doing about 400-some votes as of right now,” said Election Judge Kathy Altringer. “We’re doing very well and have been very busy.”

The voting will be open to the public until 8:00 p.m. tonight, and the referendum has already seen about 500 votes come in, in just the opening five hours. Despite the substantial outcome of voters already, election judges believe that the flow of voters will continue to come in steadily, with a potential spike in the afternoon and evening with the coming weather. “I think we’ll be steady for most of the day, and probably if the snowstorm hits, we’ll probably see everyone trying to come in by four or five, but I think it will stay steady all day,” said Altringer.

Along with the in-person votes, the school board received about 30 more absentee ballots over the weekend, bringing their absentee ballots to totaling nearly 220 ballots for the referendum.

The election for the Crookston public referendum will be open at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church until 8:00 p.m. tonight. If you are inside the building when the doors close at 8:00 p.m., you will still be allowed to cast your vote, but you will not be allowed inside to cast your vote once the doors. “The polls close at 8:00 p.m. Just come in,” said Altringer. “It goes by your last name where you’re going to sign up at. If you’re a new voter, be sure to bring your driver’s license and ID, and we will get you registered.” The public is also allowed to stay in the building while the machines count the votes to hear the official results as soon as they are announced.

Stay tuned to KROX and kroxam.com for more updates on the election as more information becomes available.

3 dead, 5 critical in Michigan State University shooting; suspect found dead

shutterstock_242080651182479

Three people are dead and five others are injured after a shooting at multiple locations on Michigan State University’s East Lansing campus Monday night, police said. The suspect has also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. MSU Police and Public Safety said during a press briefing that the injured victims have been transported to a hospital, where all five remain in critical condition. Sparrow Hospital Communications Director John Foren confirmed that the hospital received five patients from the shooting but did not have an update on their conditions.

There is no longer a threat on campus and the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief, said during a press briefing that there is no longer a threat on campus and the shelter-in-place order has been lifted.  University police said on Twitter that there appeared to be only one suspect, described as a “short male with a mask.” They later tweeted at 12:28 a.m. EST that the suspect had been located off campus and that he appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was identified as a 43-year-old man who was not affiliated with the university. Rozman said: “He is not a student, faculty, staff. And we have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight.”  Police are still working to determine the suspect’s identity and possible motive, the interim deputy chief said.

Police initially received 911 calls of shots fired at 8:18 p.m. in Berkey Hall and located “several” victims there. Police then received a report of another shooting and responded to the MSU Union building, where they found other victims. Two of the fatalities were at Berkey Hall and one was at the MSU Union building.

Michigan State has about 50,000 students. East Lansing is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. Authorities announced late Monday that all campus activities would be canceled for 48 hours, including athletics and classes. People were advised not to come to campus Tuesday.
