Fitness Fever is back for February, featuring some great outdoor activity locations across Polk County again this year. Polk County Public Health, the Polk County Wellness Coalition, and community partners and volunteers are excited to highlight this year’s outdoor family activities and the variety of active living choices available in our area. Outdoor family activities will be offered every Sunday in February across Polk County and are free for the entire region.

Last week, on Sunday, February 5, the Sandhills in Fertile held the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center’s Winter Fest! This Sunday, February 12, The Polk County Public Health and Wellness Coalition is going Sledding in Crookston’s Central Park from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.! The event will be held at the Pool Parking Lot or the top of Central Park in Crookston to do some sledding and enjoy the great outdoors! “That’s been a really popular day that has been a staple of February Fitness Fever for a number of years, and we ask people to bring some sleds and come on out. We’ll have a bonfire, some prizes, outdoor fun, snacks, hot chocolate, and hopefully some good weather ahead to enjoy that day,” Wellness Coordinator Amanda Lien explained. “We encourage people to get out and sled in that community. I know there are some great sledding hills in Fertile as well as other places. It’s promoting the idea that even when it’s cold, we can dress for the weather and get outside.” Prizes for the event will be drawn throughout the day for everyone who puts their names in at the door.

Next Sunday, February 19, will be a free Ice-Skating Day at rinks around Polk County, including the Crookston Sports Center, the outdoor Fosston Skating Rink, and East Grand Forks Civic Center. The City of Crookston will offer free skating from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Crookston Sports Center, with ice skates available in various sizes for youth and adults. The City of Fosston Outdoor Ice Rink, located at the Softball Complex on the Northeast end of town, will have free ice skates available during their open skating time from 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation will sponsor and open free skating at the East Grand Forks Civic Center from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. but will not provide free skates.

On the final Sunday of the month, February 26, Public Health is partnering with the Crookston Pickleball Club to offer a day of Pickleball at the University of Minnesota Crookston Wellness Center. “This will be the first year we’ve done this. We do try to feature new activities and events. This will be our indoor day, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Crookston Wellness Center,” Amanda Lein explained. “Members of the Crookston Pickleball Club will be there to provide equipment and all the instruction needed to learn how to play pickleball.” All skill levels and beginners are welcome to join to learn how to play and have fun.

Children and adults of all ages and skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend these free fitness events. “We’re trying to promote the message that you can be active all year round and in the wintertime, and you should come out and try something new. Whether you’ve ice-skated before or haven’t, I know there’s curling in Crookston and maybe some of the other communities,” Amanda Lien explained. “Pickleball is going to be new. We’ve done ice fishing in the past, we’ve had taekwondo and indoor fitness classes. Our goal is to continue to promote year-round physical activity, which is great for our physical health, as well as our mental well-being and our social connection.” Also, it is recommended to dress in layers for all outdoor activities!

There are many safe, easy, and free to low-cost healthy family activities that you can try outdoors here in Polk County. Take time this winter to experience the fun and activity winter can provide! The Polk County Wellness Coalition wants to thank its many volunteers and partners who are our true champions of wellness and collaborate with them to put healthy choices within reach. Events may be rescheduled depending on weather conditions.

For more information and resources on where and how to stay active in your community, contact Amanda Lien at 218-281-3385. Stay tuned to KROX and the Polk County Wellness Coalition’s social media for any updates or changes to the events at https://www.facebook.com/polkcountypublichealth.

Colgate-Palmolive recalls 4.9M units of Fabuloso cleaner due to risk of bacteria

shutterstock_2064814526685756

Colgate-Palmolive is recalling approximately 4.9 million units of Fabuloso multipurpose cleaner, stating the products may expose consumers to a harmful bacteria. According to a notice posted on Wednesday on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website, the recalled products can contain Pseudomonas-species bacteria, which are environmental organisms widely found in soil and water. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that could require medical treatment. Tthe bacteria can enter the body through the eyes or through a break in the skin, and it can also be inhaled. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria.

Additionally, a notice on Fabuloso’s website says the cause is related to a manufacturing issue in which a preservative was not added at intended levels, adding that “with inadequate preservative, there is a risk of bacteria growth in the recalled products.” , Fabuloso says that five different scented versions of the cleaner are affected; and the affected products were made between December 14, 2022 and January 23, 2023, when the manufacturing issue was corrected. Some 3.9 million of these bottles were never released to the public for sale.

Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson and Chlöe Bailey to star in the film “Girl From the North Country”

shutterstock_1195796230665174

Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson and Chlöe Bailey will star in the big screen adaptation of “Girl From the North Country,” a Broadway musical featuring the music of Bob Dylan. The musical originated at the Old Vic in London and had an off-Broadway run in 2018 at the Public Theater before heading to Broadway. However despite positive reviews, the musical struggled to sell tickets post-COVID and closed after its months-long stint. It has since played in the West End, Toronto and Australia.

“Girl From the North Country” will use Dylan’s music library, including “Forever Young,” “All Along the Watchtower” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” to score the Depression-era story about Midwesterners who cross paths at a turning point in their lives.  According to a synopsis, “based in 1934 in Duluth, Minn. during the Great Depression, “Girl From the North Country” centers on a group of wayward travelers as their lives intersect in a guesthouse. Things are spiraling out of control for proprietor Nick Laine (Harrelson), whose wife Elizabeth (Colman) is suffering from dementia. All the while, the bank is foreclosing on their home and their adopted daughter Marianne (Bailey) has a closely guarded secret that no one can explain. But when an escaped convict Joe Scott (Tosin Cole) seeks shelter at the guesthouse, a relationship develops between Marianne and Joe that will change everything for everyone forever.”

Dylan himself has given his approval of the film adaptation. sharing in a statement: “To be associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life. It goes without saying the man is a genius for putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands. The play had me crying at the end. I can’t even say why. When the curtain came down, I was stunned. I really was.”

Crookston School District residents……Make sure to vote Yes on February 14 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  If you can’t vote on the 14th, stop by the Crookston School District office and request an absentee ballot.  Also, if you have kids at college that still consider Crookston home, have them fill out the absentee ballot if they can’t make it to town on the 14th.  We need to make sure we get this passed to show the kids and community we care, and we want to turn Crookston into a progressive community, a forward-thinking community.

VOTE YES on February 14!

MAILBAG

We received the email below from a couple in Arizona, complementing the video stream and Wyatt’s play-by-play.  Always nice to hear from happy grandparents that can’t make it to the games!

A very hearty thank you from Arizona!  My wife and I had the pleasure on Friday night of watching your Greenway-Crookston high school hockey game livestream and then listened on Saturday afternoon to the Greenway-Red Lake Falls game on the internet radio connection.  We have a grandson on the Greenway team and try to catch as many of his games as possible.  With your limitations, the video production Friday was terrific, the announcers were excellent, easy to understand, and enjoyably pretty impartial.  We also found the Saturday game on the radio to have the same good qualities.

You guys are light years ahead of everyone else.  Your community is fortunate to have you.  Our hats off to your entire staff and ownership. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

Sincerely, Mike and Joan Barle
Mesa, AZ

The Section 8A Girls Hockey seeds and tournament bracket have been officially released.  The seeding went as everybody expected.  The tournament will begin on Thursday with the first-round games at the high seed, and the semi-finals and championship will be held at Warroad.  The seeds and bracket are below –

TEAM SEEDS (Points) –
1. Warroad  – 5
2. Crookston – 9
3. Thief River Falls – 13
4. East Grand Forks – 17
5. Detroit Lakes – 21
6. International Falls – 25

Section Semi-finals – (Saturday, February 11 at Warroad)
4:30 PM – #1 Warroad vs #4 EGF
6:30 PM – #2 Crookston vs #3 TRF – On KROX Radio and the video stream

Section Championship – (Thursday, February 16 at Warroad)
7:00 PM – The winners of the semi-finals – IF Crookston – we will have it on the radio and the KROX Video stream.

Crookston is 16-6-2 on the year and 8-2 in the Section.  Both losses were lopsided to Warroad.  Crookston is a solid team, but they struggled against top-level teams.  Crookston played five top-level teams this year.
Warroad (2), Hermantown, Gentry Academy, Roseau, and Lakeville North.

What is top level?  Anybody that is well above .500 and anybody that is a good team.  Blaine is .500 this year so they didn’t make it.  Bemidji is a little above .500 but 29th out of 60 teams in AA and they got hammered in the first round of the playoffs..  So that is how I came to the conclusion of the top-level teams.

In the six games against the top-level teams this year, Crookston is 0-6.  They have been outscored 31-8.  How does Crookston score more, it isn’t a lack of effort.   Well, I am not the guy to give advice on scoring.  But I will try anyway.
1. The girls need to get shots on goal and look for rebounds.  Crash the net.  They will have to get the “dirty” goals.
2. Look to set up teammates more. When they work together as a team, they are more dangerous and really fun to watch.
3. Have to be stronger, especially in front of the net.

It is playoff time, and teams are always a little more defensive. Crookston will have to be ready in the semi-finals because Thief River Falls seems to have closed the gap a little with Crookston going into the playoffs.
Can anybody beat Warroad?  Of course, because it is high school sports.  Is it likely to happen on their home ice?  It will be tough.

I won’t get too much into the semi-final games, but we will dive into the championship game predictions next week.

The Section 8A Wrestling Team tournament seeds will likely be announced sometime on Friday.

I am guessing this is how the seeding will go after a Crookston loss after tie-breaker criteria on Tuesday night. Crookston was missing two wrestlers because of illness, but that eventually doesn’t matter.  My prediction is below –

  1. Frazee (beat UNC 2 times)
  2. United North Central (lost to Frazee 2 times)
  3. Fosston-Bagley (Beat Crookston, BGMR, Fertile-Beltrami, and Mahnomen-Waubun)
  4. Barnesville (Beat Crookston by tie-breaker, Fer-Bel, MW)
  5. Crookston (lost to Frazee, UNC, Fos-Bag, and Barnesville)
  6. Badger/Greenbush-Middle River
  7. Fertile-Beltrami  (Whoever wins the dual on Thursday between FB and MW will be 7)
  8. Mahnomen/Waubun

The first round will be wrestled on Tuesday at the high seed.  1 hosts 8, 2 hosts 7, 3 hosts 6, and 4 hosts 5.  The semi-finals and championship will be held at Fertile-Beltrami School on Friday, February 17.

IF Crookston can get healthy and eligible, they could make a run.  But Frazee is the heavy favorite in my book as they are strong from top to bottom.

5:00 pm     Red Lake County vs Northern Freeze

At the conclusion of SH/Roseau, an announcement will be made to keep fans off the court.  5:00 will be put on the clock for WAO and RLC to use for warm-ups in the big gym and to set their benches.  The scorebook will continue as it was on Friday night, with no additions to rosters.

The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors met Thursday in Brooklyn Park and approved moving from 14 to 13 weight classes in boys and girls wrestling, cutting overtime from soccer matches, and shot down a proposal to add a third class or tennis. The meeting recap is below.

WRESTLING WEIGHT CLASSES TO GO FROM 14 TO 13
Participation in Girls and Boys Wrestling will be across 13 weight divisions each beginning with the 2023-2024 season following approval of the Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors at its scheduled meeting at League headquarters in Brooklyn Center on Thursday.

The newly-approved weight divisions come as a result of a NFHS wrestling rules modification that requires each state association to select the number of weight classes for their state at 12, 13 or 14.

The board used information from a survey of member schools and a recommendation from the League’s Wrestling Advisory Committee in making their decision. The approval brings alignment in the weight divisions between both genders of participants when enacted next school year.

Boys wrestlers will complete the 2022-2023 season with 14 weight divisions and Girls Wrestling will conclude its second season as an activity with 12 weight divisions. In the 2002-2003 season, Boys Wrestling went from 13 to 14 weight divisions.

The approved weight divisions for Girls Wrestling are: 100 pounds; 106, 112, 118, 124, 130, 136, 142, 148, 155, 170, 190, 235.  And, the approved weight divisions for Boys Wrestling are: 107 pounds, 114, 121, 127, 133, 139, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215, 285.

In feedback via surveys from member schools this past November, there was a clear preference for 13 weight classes when boys wrestle boys or when girls wrestle boys. While member schools surveyed preferred remaining at 12 weight divisions for girls wrestling, 76 percent of the responses indicated openness to moving to 13.

The League’s Wrestling Advisory Committee recommended 13 weight divisions for girls threefold: It matches the recommendation for boys, girls wrestling doesn’t have a team component so there is no disadvantage for schools with a smaller number of participants and it allows for continued growth of the activity.

In a related wrestling approval, the Board of Directors affirmed a decision by the League’s Executive Committee for an updated competition model for Girls Wrestling at the section and state level. The updated models are reflective of the increased participation in Girls Wrestling. The increased participation, which had doubled in its second year as an activity, creates postseason expansion from two combined section tournaments to four on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Sections 1-4 will compete in two separate tournaments at Hastings High School and Sections 5-8 will do likewise at Sartell High School. The first- and second-place finishers in each weight class in each of the four section tournaments will advance to the state tournament.  This doubles the number of state participants from the 2022 tournament.  Each of the 12 weight classes will feature an eight-participant field competing for first- through sixth-place finishes on Saturday, March 4.

Complete details and schedules are available at www.mshsl.org/wrestling

OTHER ACTION ITEMS –
In other Action Items, the Board of Directors acted on Fall Activity Advisory Proposals in the following manner:

Football: A motion to approve an Activity Advisory Proposal to seed Nos. 1-8 Class Nine-Player through Class AAAAA state qualifiers prior to the quarterfinal round was not approved.

Soccer-Boys and Girls: Approved the implementation of running time in the second half if the goal-differential is five or more.
Approved the elimination of overtime in regular season games when the contest is tied at the end of regulation.

Tennis-Boys and Girls: Approved the seeding of Class A qualifying teams, one through five.
A motion to approve a proposed increase in the number of classes in Girls and Boys Tennis to three was not approved by the Board of Directors.

Volleyball: Approved the number of players on the postseason official squad from 15 to 18.

ICE BUSTER DAZE FISHING DERBY WILL CELEBRATE 20 YEARS THIS SATURDAY

ice-buster-daze-flyer-1370170

The Ice Buster Daze Fishing Derby is back for its 20th year for a fun day and competition this Saturday, February 11, at the Red Lake River in Central Park.

Suzie Kaiser is one of the individuals leading the Derby this year and is inviting families and ice fishers everywhere to come and compete in the all-day event. “It’s a fun day. We want a family day out there. Bring your kids out to come fishing. You can bring your fish house down and fish out of that, so the kids stay warm,” Suzie Kaiser explained. “Everything looks good. There’s good ice down there. We have a lot of vehicles down there, and you’ll have to pull your stuff down there. For those that cannot walk, we should have somebody there with an ATV that will be able to take you down. We’ll allow you to run an ATV and a snowmobile down there if you want to. The tournament area will be east of the bridge, follow the north bank past the public access and the boat ramp, and keep going to the east. When you come to the point, just keep going to the east, and the fishing area will be all in that area.” The fishing area boundaries will be set on Friday with markers for where everyone can fish, and all anglers must be visible to the registration station.

The event will begin with a breakfast at the Masonic Lodge that is open to everybody from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., where they will serve pancakes, waffles, sausage, coffee, juice, and milk, with free-will offerings going to local charities. Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Red River shore in Central Park, with fishing going from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Derby will end with a spaghetti supper at the Crookston Inn from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Suzie and the Fishing Derby leaders would like to remind anglers that there is no pre-fishing on Saturday morning until the event starts at 1:00 p.m. Fishers are allowed to set the depth of their lines and fish on Friday but are not allowed to pre-fish before the Derby begins on Saturday. The Derby will also not allow any alcoholic beverages allowed in the events on the ice. Once fishing begins, the Derby will hold a tournament for catching the heaviest fish for a chance at Fishing prizes. Contestants can weigh as many fish as they like but can only bring one up at a time to be weighed. Contestants are also allowed to adjust themselves to different areas around the river if they feel their spot is not a good one to catch any fish, but spots are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Derby will also provide certain services and equipment to any anglers who are new to ice fishing or don’t have the equipment. “People can set up anywhere you want down there. If you don’t have an auger to drill holes, we will drill them for you; otherwise, bring your own auger,” Suzie Kaiser explained. “You can move around during the tournament if you want. You don’t have to stay in one spot. It’s up to you what you want to do.”

The cost of admission is $25 per hole, with tickets being sold at Crookston Hardware Hank until today and Scott’s True Value. “We’re limited to 300 tickets sold, so get in and get your tickets. We still have some available. Scott’s True Value is selling them there. He’ll have them probably until Thursday, and Hardware Hanks are selling them too,” Suzie Kaiser explained. “We will pick them up sometime on Saturday morning, and if there are any left by then, we will sell them down on the ice if we have any left. We usually sell out, so get in and get them early.” People who aren’t ice fishers can still buy tickets to the Derby and win some prizes without dropping a bobber below the ice, as the Derby is giving away raffle prizes for all ticket holders. Prizes include custom corn hole boards, a Sylvania 10.1” Smart Tablet with DVD, a 50” Smart TV, a $100 Ampride Gift Card & American Federal Ice Fishing Bucket, a Kobalt 257 pc tool set, and much more. For those that are entering to fish, they have a chance to win 18 other great prizes for catching the heaviest fish in addition to a chance to win the raffle prizes. The first-place winner will win a Humminbird ICE55 Flasher. Second place will win some custom cornhole boards. Third place will win an Eskimo 949i Insulated Fat Fish Hub, and fourth place will win a Big Buddy Heater & The Dude’s Tumbler with a Gift Card. If not, enough fish are caught to give away all of the prizes, they will be drawn using tickets fishers are given at registration. The full list of prizes can be seen on the flyer below.

The Ice Buster Daze Fishing Derby is this Saturday, February 11, at the Red Lake River in Central Park. Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m., with a breakfast at the Masonic Lodge from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. and a spaghetti dinner at the Crookston Inn from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tickets are being sold at Crookston Hardware Hank and Scott’s True Value. For more information, contact Brian at 218-281-7762 or Hardware Hank at 218-281-1749.
