FIVE LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS WILL PARTAKE IN GIVING HEARTS DAY THIS THURSDAY

giving-hearts-day-image639548

Giving Hearts Day is this Thursday, where organizations around Northwest Minnesota and North Dakota will be reaching out for donations and volunteers for various projects and improvements. Some of these organizations include;

The Benedictine Living Community in Crookston will be partaking to raise funds for services in the Community. All the funds raised on Giving Hearts Day will be going towards one of their largest projects and greatest needs: the repairs and updates to their elevators. There are two elevators in The Summit Assisted Living and a service elevator between the Villa and the Summit that are all in need of repair. With the kitchen being located in the basement of the Summit, all of the food is brought over to the Villa on carts, and the only way that allows them to do so is using the service elevator. The food that is prepared for the children at the Cathedral School is also prepared in this kitchen and brought up on a cart each day to be picked up and brought over to the school. The tenants at the Summit need to use the service elevator to get to the Chapel and various activities that are held at The Villa. The BLC-C will host a drive-through donut and coffee event on Giving Hearts Day, on February 9, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Scruffy Tails Humane Society will also be matching donations on Giving Hearts Day! Now is your chance to double your impact in caring for the lost and homeless pets in your area. The funds will be used to help with much-needed renovations to their kennels and other parts of the building.

The RiverView Foundation is also partaking in Giving Hearts Day on February 9 to benefit the patients RiverView Health serves. The Foundation Board has determined that undesignated 2023 Giving Hearts Day contributions will be used to purchase an Abbott Architect and Sysmex analyzers for the RiverView Laboratory at an estimated cost of $125,000:

The Crookston Cathedral School will also be partaking in Giving Hearts Day for various improvements to the school.

Last but not least, the Crookston Care & Share will be partaking in Giving Hearts Day for repairs to their boiler room, donations to their food shelf, and the purchase of new beds for the Hope Center.

If you would like to give to any of these organizations or any other participating organization in Northwest Minnesota and North Dakota on or before February 9, you can go to www.GivingHeartsDay.org and search for any participating organization under Ways To Give.

CHS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CLASS CREATE CUTTING BOARDS FOR DOOR PRIZES AT ICE BUSTER DAZE

img-7808-758x42073297-1

The Crookston High School’s Community Projects class has been busy making projects for the school and other organizations around town over the past couple of weeks, and a couple more students are ready to gift their latest projects to the upcoming Ice Buster Daze event this Saturday! Crookston High School students Chase Proulx and Jamie Brown created four cutting boards with unique designs and carvings that will be given as door prizes at the 2023 Ice Buster Daze event on Saturday, February 11.

At the beginning of the semester, Community Project class teacher Travis Oliver gives the class a list of projects that he receives from the school and organizations in the community for the class to choose from and complete if they’ve completed other individual projects to complete individually or with a group. Being ice fishermen and regular participants of Ice Buster Daze, Proulx and Brown saw an opportunity to complete a simple project for a passion. “Jamie and I are big ice fishermen ourselves, so we thought of something that was easy for a door prize and something that people would use, so we came up with cutting boards,” Chase Proulx explained. The two created four cutting boards with unique engravings and patterns using different colored scrap wood with the logos of the Crookston High School and Ice Buster Daze. “We took some scrap wood, pieced it together, and tried to match up the colors on it, then put butcher’s block on it and engraved it,” Jamie Brown explained. “One of them doesn’t have an engraving, but it’s nice and thin. One was also given to us by someone else (fellow student Kaleb Stolpa) who had already made one, but we just finished it up for him.”

With these new projects, Travis Oliver and the class hope to make this an annual project done for Ice Buster Daze with unique engravings each year for competitors to win. “It feels pretty good to do something for Ice Buster Days when we both compete in it,” said Chase Proulx. “When people win them, we can say, “Hey, we made that, and at the Crookston High School.”

With the year over halfway completed, the Community Projects class has more projects it plans to complete, such as a new Pirate desk for the CHS’s Guidance Office, a display case for the Leo Club, and new breakfast trollies for Washington Elementary School.

We will continue to check back with the Community Projects class and its students when they’ve completed their latest projects. The cutting boards will be given away as door prizes at the Crookston Ice Buster Daze event on Saturday, February 11.

Pictures of the students and the cutting boards can be found below-

PREVENT LUNG CANCER BY TESTING YOUR HOME FOR RADON

polk-county-public-health-logo-2523790

Polk County Public Health urges everyone to test their home for radon, the invisible radioactive gas found at elevated levels in many Minnesota homes. Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils. The only way for residents to know if their home has radon is to test. More than 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon each year in the United States. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among people who never smoked. Fortunately, the risk is largely preventable through testing homes and fixing radon problems.

Minnesota radon key findings include:

  • About 40% of Minnesota homes have dangerous levels of radon.
  • The average radon level in Minnesota homes is about 4.2 pCi/L compared to 1.3 pCi/L nationwide.
  • Of the homes tested in Polk County from 2010-2020, 70% had radon levels at four pCi/L or higher.
  • Testing and mitigation are less frequent in communities with lower incomes and more renters.

Tests should be done in the lowest level of the home that is frequently occupied. Test devices are usually placed in the house for 2-5 days. The best time to test is during the heating season, but testing can be done year-round. With more people working and schooling from home, it’s even more important to test homes.

Polk County Public Health offers free radon test kits to be pick-up at our three locations (Crookston, East Grand Forks, and McIntosh). Other agencies and vendors can be found on the Minnesota Department of Health’s Radon Testing website. Hardware stores may stock test kits, and licensed professionals can also conduct testing.

Health professionals recommend testing every 2-5 years and during real-estate transactions. In homes with high radon levels, radon reduction typically involves installing a venting pipe and fan to pull the gas from under the home to the outside. This reduces the amount of radon in the home to low levels. A list of currently licensed radon mitigation professionals can be found on the Find a Radon Mitigation Professional page on the MDH website.

To learn more about radon maps, testing, mitigation, and licensure in Minnesota.

Polk County Public Health and Norman-Mahnomen Public Health offer Healthy Homes Assessments, a health and safety assessment of a home completed by a trained nurse. This service is free for residents of Polk, Norman, or Mahnomen County and includes privately owned or rented homes. For more information, please contact Polk County Public Health at 218-281-3385 or Norman- Mahnomen Public Health at 218-280-3125.

NORTHLAND COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE OPENS “PIONEER PANTRY” TO SUPPORT STUDENTS FACING FOOD INSECURITY

sandy_kiddoo_with_parker_jaques_trf_pantry-630x420933713-1

Northland Community & Technical College is proud to announce the launch of Pioneer Pantry, a new on-campus food pantry aimed to support students facing food insecurity. Pioneer Pantry joins the recently launched Northland Cares program to combat the many barriers to success students encounter as they work towards graduation and full-time employment.

Food insecurity is an often unspoken challenge for approximately one-third of all college students. While never having a formal program in place, Northland has always provided assistance to students who request it or connected students with local food pantries to help meet their needs.

Now, thanks in large part to a generous $5,000 donation from Scheels via the United Way that covered the major start-up needs of Pioneer Pantry — refrigeration, shelving, etc. — Northland students have direct access to a food pantry stocked full of free, donated goods.

“From housing to groceries, transportation to technology, today’s students are seeing dramatically rising costs for virtually every basic need required for academic success,” said Dr. Sandy Kiddoo, President of Northland Community & Technical College. “We welcome many nontraditional students who are also responsible for families, part-time jobs, and other demands that place an even greater demand on their resources, and our goal is to find creative yet effective ways to help them achieve their academic goals despite those challenges.”

A traditional community college devoted to meeting the employment needs of local industry, Northland has long been on the leading edge of innovation when it comes to student success, and students often play a big role in bringing innovative ideas to life.

“Little did we know that Dr. Kiddoo and the administration were also brainstorming the idea of an on-campus food pantry when we returned from another college visit with the same idea,” said Parker Jaques, Thief River Falls Campus Student Senate President.

“Pretty soon, other campus organizations got involved, and the idea for Pioneer Pantry came to fruition,” explained Ryan McGregor, East Grand Forks Campus Student Senate President. “The pantry will be stocked with food donated from food drives and sourced from local pantries and donations.”

Pioneer Pantry is just the latest Northland initiative to bridge the gap for students who need extra support. The college recently launched Northland Cares, an emergency grant funded by the generous support of the Northland Foundation and the sales of Northland’s new Rocket Fuel coffee. Northland and Minnesota State have also partnered with United Way 211 to establish a statewide basic needs resource hub to give students 24/7 access to basic needs resources and support via phone, text, or chat.

“Pioneer Pantry is the type of program that just warms the heart of an educator, and that’s what we are at our core,” Kiddoo said. “We’re here to help our students achieve their dreams, but not even the most driven student can make it on an empty stomach. Pioneer Pantry embodies what a community college is all about.”

If you’d like to donate to Pioneer Pantry, contact Jeff Pool, Dean of Student Affairs, at (218) 793-2460 or jeff.pool@northlandcollege.edu.

To learn more about the Northland Cares program, contact Lars Dyrud, Foundation Executive Director, at (218) 683-8616 or lars.dyrud@northlandcollege.edu.
