CHS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CLASS CREATES FRONT DESK FOR CROOKSTON SPORTS CENTER ADMISSIONS

img-7795-1-560x420796324-1

The Crookston High School’s Community Projects class is constantly working to create new projects to help the community and the school, and a team of three students have completed another project to help the school and community. Crookston High School seniors Hunter Knutson, Jaren Bailey, and Jackson Demarais built a new front admissions desk, like the one at the entrance of the High School, for the Crookston Sports Center.

The Community Projects class had created a new front desk for the admissions for the basketball, volleyball, and other sports games at the Crookston High School to have it look more like a pirate ship, and felt it was time to treat the Crookston Sports Center to the same treatment as just as many sports teams play there as the High School. “We actually planned to make it last year, but it never really happened. We had other stuff going on. So, this year, Mr. Oliver got all the funding, and we then took measurements off the one in the front of the school, came out here to see if it would fit, then we built our frame and got some tongue and grove to put on,” Senior Hunter Knutson explained. “We then cut circles to put all the logos of the people who donated out of the CNC machine at the school to VCarve. Then for the front piece that says Crookston Sports Center, we VCarved that too. Then we made the top and corners out of cherry.”

To help fund the creation of the desk, the students asked for donations from other departments and clubs that also use the Sports Center to complete the desk. “I did all the programming for the CNC to cut out the logos of all the businesses that donated money to us for it,” Senior Jackson Demarais explained. “So, we asked if people would donate some money for it, and all of the businesses on here donated $200 each to fund the creation of this table.”  To thank the organizations for their contributions, the students created wooden circles with their logos to attach all over the desk. The businesses that contributed money to the creation of the desk included the Crookston Parks & Recreations Department, the Crookston Blue Line Club, the Crookston Figure Skating Association, the University of Minnesota Crookston Athletic Department, the Crookston High School Hockey Team, and Hot Stove Hockey.

When the students aren’t working on individual projects, the class is offered several community projects to complete that they receive from the community or the school for them to choose to complete. Due to two of the seniors being members of the Crookston Boys Hockey Team, they chose this project as a way to help the Sports Center and those who help with admissions to their games. “Jaren and I are both captains of the hockey team, so of course, we wanted to help do this out here. Our best friends are always out here with us when they can come to the games. And Linda Morgan really appreciated this project,” Hunter Knutson explained. “When the door opens, a big gust of wind always comes through, so this wood will protect her, and she’ll even be able to slide a little space heater underneath it,” Senior Jaren Bailey explained. “She’d been complaining about she gets pretty cold with that little cardboard table, so this’ll be nice for her.”

The students said the class has a few more projects left to complete, such as a series of cutting boards to be given away as prizes at the Ice Buster Daze and a display case for the Leo Club. Senior Jaren Bailey revealed he plans to create wooden flags with eagles carved into them as a part of an individual project.

We will continue to check back with the Community Projects class and its students when they’ve completed their latest projects.

Pictures of the students and the desk can be seen below-

GOLDEN LINK SENIOR CENTER BRINGS BACK VALENTINE’S DAY COOKIE FUNDRAISER FOR SECOND YEAR

golden-link151638

The Golden Link Senior Center in Crookston is bringing back its Valentine’s Day Cookie Fundraiser for the second year. The Center is selling sugar cookies by the dozen to help raise funds for the Center to use for any future needs or purchases for the Senior Center.

During the weekend, the Golden Link Senior Center will bake heart-shaped sugar cookies with sprinkles and/or frosting, but they can also make plain sugar cookies upon request. The Center sells them at $6 per order of a dozen for the sprinkled or plain cookies and $7 for the frosted cookies. “People may stop in, or if they’re coming in for coffee or lunch, they can stop in the office and see myself, Jen, and I will write the order down for them,” Golden Link Senior Center Manager Jen Erdmann explained. “They can also call 218-281-3072 and speak with me, and we will place that order. We’ll have them ready by the thirteenth of February, the day before Valentine’s Day, and they can stop anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to pick up those cookie orders.” All orders must be made before Thursday, February 9, to allow for the Golden Link to gather the ingredients and dough they need to make. And if any cookies are left over from the sale, customers can come and get them after the sale on the 13.

With the funds they receive the Center will receive from the cookie sales, the Center plans to use it for certain necessities to help the Center run smoothly, though it won’t go to any specific department. “Right now, we don’t really have any specific thing in mind, but the fund is kept separate. I don’t add it into the main thing,” Head Cook and Treasurer Shirley Nielsen explained. “We keep it separate, so if we come up with something we need a quick fundraiser for, we’ve got some money stashed already.” Examples of items include items for the kitchen or office equipment.

Along with the fundraiser, the Center has a few other activities planned for the rest of February, including a guest speaker coming in on February 21. “We have Connie Hannesson coming as a Speaker of the Month for Black History Month. We’re looking forward to that, and thereafter each month, on the third Tuesday of the month,” Jane Erdmann explained. “Also, for Valentine’s Day, we’re going to be serving lasagna and something pink or red for dessert, and we’re hoping to have an afternoon movie. We’re not sure what that will be yet, but we’ll be making homemade popcorn that afternoon, so please call or join us for that afternoon movie around 1:00 p.m.” Along with their daily activities, the Center is looking to bring back its evening dinners next month, every second and fourth Thursday of each month.

The Golden Link Senior Center’s Valentine’s Day Cookie Fundraiser will be held on Monday, February 13, but all orders must be placed by Thursday, February 9. Plain and sprinkled cookies will cost $6 per dozen, and frosted cookies will be $7 per dozen. To place your order(s), you can go to the Golden Link Senior Center to place your order, or call it in at 218-281-3072.

Sister Francella Gust – OBIT

sister-francella-gust-518719

Sister Francella Gust, age 90, died on February 2, 2023, at Villa Saint Vincent, Crookston, MN.

Sister Francella was born at home on October 10, 1932, in Tabor, MN, the tenth of eleven children of John Jacob Gust and Frances Ann (Kotrba) Gust. At baptism, she was given the name Frances.

The Gust family were members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Tabor. Sister Francella became acquainted with the Benedictine sisters when they came to her parish to teach summer religious education classes.

Frances attended District 64 country grade school. No matter the season, she and her siblings often walked the two-and-a-half miles to school. For high school, Frances attended Mount Saint Benedict Academy in Crookston.

During her senior year, she entered Mount Saint Benedict Monastery. She received the Benedictine habit and the name of Sister Francella on July 10, 1950, pronounced temporary vows on July 11, 1951, and made her final monastic profession on July 11, 1954.

Sister Francella graduated from the Saint Cloud School of Nursing in 1959. Over a period of thirty-one years, she successfully served as a staff nurse or as a nursing supervisor at Saint Francis Hospital in Crookston, Saint Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes, and Villa Saint Vincent. She then pursued training in clinical pastoral education from Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, and served in pastoral care at Villa Saint Vincent in Crookston for thirty-three years until her retirement in 2016.

Sister Francella said she found the celebration of feasts and the companionship of the sisters to be particularly life-giving. She lent her good soprano voice and full heart to liturgical prayer. She enjoyed small group living where, she said, she found the freedom to express and to receive love and concern.

In her retirement, Sister Fran liked watching good movies and plying various crafts, especially crocheting, decoupaging, and embroidering. Her embroidered dishtowels sold as fast as drops of water sizzle on a hot stove.

Sister Francella is preceded in death by her parents, John Jacob Gust and Frances Ann (Kotrba) Gust, her brothers Frank, Rudolph, Paul, Louis, Anthony, Eugene, Richard, Gerard, and her sister, Alice (Gust) Canterbury.

Surviving her are her brother Edward, many nieces and nephews and the Sisters of Saint Benedict of Crookston.

A prayer service celebrating Sister Francella’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m., and the Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. Both services will be held at the Sacred Heart Chapel of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery.

The Mass will be live-recorded for later viewing on www.stenshoelhouske.com.

Gifts in honor of Sister Francella Gust may be given to Mount Saint Benedict Foundation, 620 Summit Ave., Crookston, MN 56716.

CROOKSTON FFA PLACE WELL AT VARIOUS REGION 1 FFA CDES WITH FISH AND WILDLIFE QUALIFYING FOR STATES

image_6487327-560x420253849-1

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, Crookston FFA competed in various Region 1 FFA CDE’s at UMC.

The Fish and Wildlife team came in 6th place and qualified for state. Brandon Wandrie placed second out of 75 individuals. The Fish and Wildlife CDE requires competitors to identify Minnesota wildlife mammals, game birds, non-game birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, and insects. They also answer questions about wildlife characteristics, wildlife monitoring technology and management, and current issues facing Minnesota wildlife.
The Food Science and Technology Team came in 3rd place. Addie Schiller placed 7th individually and Sam Rezac placed 1st individually. The Food Science and Technology CDE requires members to have knowledge of food safety practices, nutrition, aroma identification, triangle tests, and new food product production. The team had 60 minutes to create a new food product based off of a written scenario. They then had to pitch the food product to judges with packaging, an accurate nutrition label, costs of production, and food safety guidelines. Although the team did fantastic, they did not advance to state as the Food Science and Technology quota is the top 2 teams.
Floriculture and General Livestock Evaluation also competed and did well.
