RIVERVIEW AUXILIARY’S SCRUB SALE WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY IN RIVERVIEW NORTH PARKING LOT

img-7789283949

The RiverView Auxiliary is happily holding its annual Scrub Sale on Wednesday, February 8, from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Auxiliary will host the Scrubs on Wheels store, named America’s Favorite Mobile Scrub Store, which will be parked in the north parking lot of RiverView Health.

The annual sale is hosted by RiverView twice a year, which stands apart from other events, sales, and fundraisers the RiverView Auxiliary usually holds. “What puts this aside and makes it so different from other events that we have is that this Scrub Sale, they arrive in a big truck and trailer. So, they will park in our North Employee Parking lot of RiverView Health on Wednesday, February 8, and be here from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m.,” RiverView Patient Access Director Carrie Bergquist explained. “So, what you do is, you don’t go into RiverView at all, just look for the big white truck and trailer in the parking lot, where you can shop for brand name scrubs, shoes, stethoscopes, caps, masks, nursing bags and much more. There are two dressing rooms in the trailer, so you can try them before you buy. And if they don’t have something you want in stock, they will order it, and it will get shipped right to me at RiverView, and I will disseminate that once I get it.”
The store will have scrubs in all different colors, sizes, styles, and themes, such as long-sleeved, short-sleeved, and holiday-themed (Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter scrubs, etc.).

The store will also sell other items that go along with scrubs to help customers feel comfortable and authentic when they wear them at home. “Along with the scrubs, they have very comfy shoes that you can purchase. That shoe sale is a BOGO shoe sale where you buy one pair and then get the next pair 50% off,” Bergquist explained. “You can also buy caps to match your scrubs and any masking that you need, any nursing bags, scissors, badge reels, and compression socks. It’s not just scrubs that they sell. It’s everything that goes along with scrubs.”
The store accepts both cash and credit cards for purchases, with all sales made that day will be entered to win a grand prize of items from the sale and the Limited Addition Gift Shop. At the end of the sale, a portion of the sales will be given to the RiverView Auxiliary, which will be passed around to departments around RiverView to enhance patient care. The hospital also shared that the Scrubs Shop will be back at RiverView to sell their products again in the fall.

Along with this fundraiser, RiverView Auxiliary has other fundraisers and service projects planned for February, with their next big project being Giving Hearts Day on February 9. “The Auxiliary is always looking for service projects to complete. Our next service project is delivering the Crookston Home Delivered Meals from February 13 to 17,” Bergquist shared. “Our volunteers always look forward to that event. Then towards the end of the month, on February 24, we will have another blood drive here at RiverView.”

The RiverView Auxiliary’s Scrub Shop will be open on Wednesday, February 8, from 12:00-6:00 p.m. and will be parked in the north parking lot of RiverView Health. The store accepts both cash and credit cards for purchases, with all sales made that day will be entered to win a grand prize of items from the sale and the Limited Addition Gift Shop, with a portion of all sales going to the RiverView Auxiliary to enhance patient care. MSHSL TO GO BACK TO 13 WEIGHT CLASSES FOR WRESTLING, ELIMINATES OT FOR SOCCER AND MORE

mshsllogo351018

The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors met Thursday in Brooklyn Park and approved moving from 14 to 13 weight classes in boys and girls wrestling, cutting overtime from soccer matches, and shot down a proposal to add a third class or tennis. The meeting recap is below.

WRESTLING WEIGHT CLASSES TO GO FROM 14 TO 13
Participation in Girls and Boys Wrestling will be across 13 weight divisions each beginning with the 2023-2024 season following approval of the Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors at its scheduled meeting at League headquarters in Brooklyn Center on Thursday.

The newly-approved weight divisions come as a result of a NFHS wrestling rules modification that requires each state association to select the number of weight classes for their state at 12, 13 or 14.

The board used information from a survey of member schools and a recommendation from the League’s Wrestling Advisory Committee in making their decision. The approval brings alignment in the weight divisions between both genders of participants when enacted next school year.

Boys wrestlers will complete the 2022-2023 season with 14 weight divisions and Girls Wrestling will conclude its second season as an activity with 12 weight divisions. In the 2002-2003 season, Boys Wrestling went from 13 to 14 weight divisions.

“The Board of Directors are so grateful for the valued input from the member schools and the thoughtful analysis from the wrestling advisory committee,” said Board President Troy Stein, the activities director at Edina High School. “This approved plan brings alignment, consistency and continued opportunities for student participants.”

The approved weight divisions for Girls Wrestling are: 100 pounds; 106, 112, 118, 124, 130, 136, 142, 148, 155, 170, 190, 235.  And, the approved weight divisions for Boys Wrestling are: 107 pounds, 114, 121, 127, 133, 139, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215, 285.

In feedback via surveys from member schools this past November, there was a clear preference for 13 weight classes when boys wrestle boys or when girls wrestle boys. While member schools surveyed preferred remaining at 12 weight divisions for girls wrestling, 76 percent of the responses indicated openness to moving to 13.

The League’s Wrestling Advisory Committee recommended 13 weight divisions for girls threefold: It matches the recommendation for boys, girls wrestling doesn’t have a team component so there is no disadvantage for schools with a smaller number of participants and it allows for continued growth of the activity.

In a related wrestling approval, the Board of Directors affirmed a decision by the League’s Executive Committee for an updated competition model for Girls Wrestling at the section and state level. The updated models are reflective of the increased participation in Girls Wrestling. The increased participation, which had doubled in its second year as an activity, creates postseason expansion from two combined section tournaments to four on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Sections 1-4 will compete in two separate tournaments at Hastings High School and Sections 5-8 will do likewise at Sartell High School. The first- and second-place finishers in each weight class in each of the four section tournaments will advance to the state tournament.  This doubles the number of state participants from the 2022 tournament.  Each of the 12 weight classes will feature an eight-participant field competing for first- through sixth-place finishes on Saturday, March 4.

Complete details and schedules are available at www.mshsl.org/wrestling

OTHER ACTION ITEMS –
In other Action Items, the Board of Directors acted on Fall Activity Advisory Proposals in the following manner:

  • Football: A motion to approve an Activity Advisory Proposal to seed Nos. 1-8 Class Nine-Player through Class AAAAA state qualifiers prior to the quarterfinal round was not approved.
  • Soccer-Boys and Girls: Approved the implementation of running time in the second half if the goal-differential is five or more.
Approved the elimination of overtime in regular season games when the contest is tied at the end of regulation.
  • Tennis-Boys and Girls: Approved the seeding of Class A qualifying teams, one through five.
A motion to approve a proposed increase in the number of classes in Girls and Boys Tennis to three was not approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Volleyball: Approved the number of players on the postseason official squad from 15 to 18.

AMERICAN CRYSTAL SUGAR AWARDS $5,000 TO SCRUFFY TAILS HUMANE SOCIETY

image-2-e1675374471622912617

American Crystal Sugar awarded Scruffy Tails Humane Society a check for $5,000 to help with badly needed renovations to give the dogs and cats a safe, secure, and enriching environment.

The Humane Society of Polk County, Inc was founded as a 501(c)(3) in January 1982 with a desire to help animals. Over the past 40 years, the society, with the help of numerous volunteers and donors, has worked hard to help the animals that have come into this facility by finding owners of lost pets and loving homes for pets in need of rehoming.

In April of 2022, they assumed the name Scruffy Tails Humane Society in recognition of the strides they have taken to grow and develop a friendly, inviting organization for pets and community members. This society is entirely supported by generous donors and contributors. This organization will not euthanize due to a lack of space, time, or funding. Their mission is to aid in the reunification and rehoming of cats and dogs, to support the human-animal bond through community education, and provide safe shelter when needed. Their vision is to lead and inspire a community dedicated to saving the lives of pets and supporting the humans who love them.

The shelter provides impound services for Crookston and Marshall County and supports surrounding communities. These funds will be used to assist with extensive renovations as the shelter was built in 1993 and has seen hundreds of dogs and cats pass through the doors resulting in a lot of wear and tear.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Scruffy Tails Humane Society, 720 E Robert St, Crookston, MN 56716, or call 218-281-7225.

GOVERNOR WALZ AUTHORIZES STATE DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR EIGHT MINNESOTA COUNTIES

state-of-minnesota-seal548511

Governor Tim Walz has authorized emergency assistance for eight Northeastern and Southwestern Minnesota counties due to damage caused by heavy snowstorms and high winds from December 13 through December 16, 2022.

“Minnesota’s emergency management team continues to work in partnership with local counties to assess and address damages caused by heavy snowstorms in December,” said Governor Walz. “We are committed to delivering assistance quickly and supporting the communities in these counties as they recover from these severe weather events.”

From December 13-16, Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Crow Wing, Itasca, Lincoln, Pine, and St. Louis counties experienced significant damage caused by severe snowstorms and wind.

As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events, impacts to outdated infrastructure and roadways have caused millions of dollars in damages statewide. Collaborative emergency planning at all levels of government and investments in infrastructure are critical to safeguarding against future damage.

GOVERNOR WALZ RECOGNIZES FOUR CHAPLINS DAY AND ORDERS FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF ON FRIDAY

minnesota-seal-e1584661193709944191

Governor Tim Walz has directed flags at all state buildings in Minnesota to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Friday, February 3, 2023, in recognition of Four Chaplains Day. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the torpedoing of the USS Dorchester, a United States Army transport ship, 150 miles off the coast of Greenland, that resulted in the loss of 672 lives. Four Army chaplains demonstrated heroism, humanitarianism, and self-sacrifice onboard the sinking ship.

“While the ship sank, the four chaplains went from soldier to soldier, calming fears, handing out life jackets, and guiding people to safety. When there were no more life jackets to give, they removed their own and gave them to others,” reads the proclamation issued by Governor Walz. “Many of the 230 people who survived owed their lives to these four chaplains.”

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in lowering their flags in recognition of Four Chaplains Day.

GIVING HEARTS DAY IS FEBRUARY 9; DONATE TO THE RIVERVIEW FOUNDATION FOR A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY

riverview-health589647

Giving Hearts Day is right around the corner! Please consider a gift to the RiverView Foundation on February 9 to benefit the patients RiverView Health serves.

This year marks the 16th year of the 24-hour fundraiser for non-profits. The RiverView Foundation has participated in the event since the beginning. Many projects, programs, and funds exist because of Giving Hearts Day. Donations and gifts given in memory or honor of loved ones have been used to purchase essential equipment to keep our community healthy.

The Foundation Board has determined that undesignated 2023 Giving Hearts Day contributions will be used to purchase the following replacement analyzers for the RiverView Laboratory at an estimated cost of $125,000:

  • Abbott Architect Analyzer: This is a general chemistry analyzer used to perform comprehensive metabolic panels, glucose (blood sugar), lipid panels, and many other tests. The analyzer will be used hundreds of times weekly for patients in all areas of RiverView.
  • Sysmex Analyzer: This is a hematology analyzer. Hematology is the study of the physical parts of the blood – the red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, the volume of cells, and everything in between. The Sysmex Analyzer will be used for common testing on a wide variety of patients at RiverView.

“Both of these analyzers are used from newborns to geriatric patients and all ages in between,’’ shared Emily Nelson, director of RiverView’s Laboratory. “They are vital to help providers assess the overall health of our patients.’’

The Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF), Impact Foundation, and Alex Stern Family Foundation host Giving Hearts Day. On February 9, DMF and other generous donors will provide up to $50,000 in match contributions to the RiverView Foundation to stretch donations even further to make the maximum impact.
