THE 24TH ANNUAL MR. CHS WILL BE HELD SUNDAY IN THE CHS AUDITORIUM

Crookston High School Student Council will be hosting the 24th Annual Mr. CHS contest on Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. at the Crookston High School Auditorium. The four contestants are Omar Petithomme, Timothy (T.J.) Sanchez, Elliot Bartrum, and Thor Harbott.

Each year the competition has a unique theme, and this year, the boys have chosen Cars. “We did get T-shirts made for the boys, and we got a little car theme on their T-shirts with red and a little silver on them, so that’s already done for us,” Student Council Advisor Linda Morgan explained. “Then, for our belt, Mr. Travis Oliver already made it, so he’s in the process of finishing the belt for our new Mr. CHS 2023.”

The boys will have the opening number, talent competition, (40% of the vote) will be performed before intermission.  After the break, there will be a performance by Ms. Crookston winner, Macy Fee, before the “Getting Dressed Up” competition, where they’ll be asked a question by last year’s Mr. CHS winner, Alex Kozitka. The competition’s finale will be the belting of Mr. CHS, presented by Kozitka.

“For the People’s Choice Award, for the people that come here to watch it, they get to vote for their favorite person. They’ll put money in these little cartons I have put out for them, and then that money goes out for the Student Council,” said Morgan. “Then the winner of the competition will get a little prize from Student Council.”

Six local businesses have also given prizes to the winner and first runner-up of Mr. CHS, but all contestants will receive a small prize from the Student Council for competing. The Mr. CHS contest is open to the public, with admission at $3.

All the money from admission to the People’s Choice Award will go to the Student Council to fund future student events. Linda Morgan and some of the contestants will join Valley Talk on Friday, February 24, at 10:40 a.m. You can listen for more information about Mr. CHS by listening to the Focus on Education program this Saturday at 8:35 a.m. on KROX. You can listen on 105.7 FM, 1260 AM, or by clicking “Listen Live” at the top of this page.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL BOARD CANVASSES MULTIUSE FACITILY REFERENDUM VOTES

multiuse-complex-aerial-2267109

The Crookston Public School Board met in the Crookston High School District Office Conference Room on Thursday afternoon to continue discussing a special meeting.

MAIN AGENDA

The meeting consisted of the board canvassing the election results of the school’s public multiuse facility referendum on February 14. They had received a total of 1,717 ballots, with 1,010 voting yes, 706 voting no, and one defective ballot. They had also received over 200 absentee ballots. The board voiced there was a good turnout of voters for the election, with them receiving nearly 300 more ballots than the primary election in August.

Board member Dave Davidson asked if they believed their actions to reach out to the public about the referendum in various ways (City Council, meetings with local organizations, and public meetings at local restaurants) was a major impact on the election’s results. Interim Superintendent Dave Kuehn answered that he believed it did, as there was a higher turnout for it, and they were able to answer many questions the public was concerned about.
“I think it gave people information, it showed people that it isn’t going to make a huge impact on their taxes. I can’t speak for sure if that’s what made the difference, but I know we had more turnout this time, and was a steady turnout all day. Every time I popped in, there were a lot of people there, so it was an intentional vote, and people that came meant to vote for this question and this question only,” Election Clerk Marilyn Wahouske explained. “We did have, and I’ve never seen this many absentees come in, I had over 200 absentees, I’ve never seen that before. There were a lot of people that were not in town that made a point to request their absentee ballot and vote. I don’t know if just getting the information out prompted all those people to vote, whether they voted yes or no, but it was very surprising to me to see that many absentee ballots come in.”

Board member Tim Dufault mentioned that more people should have voted for the referendum in the election in August than now, so wondered if there was something that changed for the amount they received. Washouske answered that in general elections, many voters pass on voting for the referendum due to other important elections they are making at the time.
“When it’s piggybacked on a general election, people often are there to vote for something else. Whether it’s the candidate that they choose, some other party affiliation thing, or other reasons, a lot of times our question gets lost in the shuffle, and they don’t really care,” Wahouske explained. “Where this one, when it’s by itself, the only voters that came were voting for this question and this question only, so it’s an intentional vote. It probably is more of an accurate depiction of what people really want.”
The board passed the canvassed results.

The Crookston Public School Board will next meet on Monday, February 27, in the Crookston High School’s Choir/Orchestra Room.

9-year-old girl, TV news staffer among three killed in Orlando shooting

Authorities confirmed that a local TV news journalist and a 9-year-old girl were among three people killed in shootings in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, while two others were wounded. Authorities said the mother of the 9-year-old child who died was in critical condition and is continuing to “fight for her life.”

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a news conference that Keith Melvin Moses, 19, has been arrested in connection with the shootings and is expected to be charged. Mina said that Moses has a lengthy criminal history that includes gun charges and charges for aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft. The sheriff’s office said they didn’t yet know if the suspect had any connection to the news crew, or the mother and daughter.

Police say the deadly rampage began at 11 a.m. local time when deputies responded to a shooting and discovered a woman in her 20s who had been fatally shot.  Moses allegedly shot and killed a woman in her 20s (with whom he was an acquaintance) on Wednesday morning, and police were called later in the day to two additional shootings near the scene. Sheriff Mina said a 9-year-old child and her mother were shot at one home; and at another scene nearby, staffers from Spectrum News 13 were shot near their vehicle. Authorities located the reporter and photographer for Spectrum News 13 — who were on the scene to cover the homicide which had occurred Wednesday morning — shot in or near their news vehicle. One of the News 13 employees died from their injuries. Mina said it is unclear why the Spectrum News 13 crew members were targeted, or if the suspect even knew whether or not they were members of the media.

Twin-engine plane crashes in Little Rock, Ark, killing all 5 aboard

shutterstock_2124703679981008

A twin-engine plane crashed near the Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Ark., on Wednesday afternoon, killing all five people on board. The Little Rock Police Department tweeted that emergency departments were alerted to the crash at 12:02 p.m., with callers reporting a crash near the 3M plant that is in the area. Sources from the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed there were no survivors.

The sheriff’s office said the plane was about a mile from the Clinton National Airport when it crashed after departing the airport. The plane was reportedly a Beech BE20 that was on its way to Columbus, Ohio.

Lt. Cody Burk, spokesman for the department, said it is unclear if weather played a role in the crash. A line of thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 46 mph swept through the heart of Arkansas at about the time of the crash.

Judge Greg Mathis lands new courtroom show with Byron Allen

shutterstock_1082163731772031

Just days after it was announced that ‘Judge Mathis’ would be ending after this season, the former judge for Michigan’s 36th District Court has announced a new show. Warner Bros. TV just announced this week that ‘Judge Mathis’ – along with ‘The People’s Court’ – would be ending after more than two decades on air. ‘Judge Mathis’ will be in its 24th season when it ends, and ‘The People’s Court’ will be at 26 seasons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Mathis Court With Judge Mathis,’ a new hour-long syndicated show, will be coming this fall. It will be produced by Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group and air on Allen Media’s Justice Central cable channel.  Judge Greg Mathis said in a statement: “For years I’ve proudly watched Byron Allen build a first-class global media empire. After 24 years on the air, I can’t think of a better company to work with to create my next great chapter. Byron and I are both from Detroit, and it’s exciting to see him build the Motown of court programming by bringing together all of my fellow judges from his eight court shows — who are the best of the best.”  Allen added, “Judge Greg Mathis is an outstanding, charismatic, and iconic television host, and we are extremely confident that our eighth and newest court series with Judge Mathis will be very successful for years to come as he joins our outstanding roster of talent.”

‘Judge Mathis’ debuted in 1998, with the show earning the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program in 2018 (it was nominated in the same category in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2022). Mathis is the longest-serving Black male host on TV and the second longest-serving TV judge, after Judy Sheindlin.
