Jessica Chastain will star in the eight-episode limited series at Apple, titled “The Savant.”

The series is inspired by a true story published in Cosmopolitan in August 2019. While the exact plot details for the series are being kept under wraps, the Cosmopolitan article tells the story of a real woman who has come to be known as “the Savant” as she infiltrates hate groups online to help stop large-scale public attacks.

Chastain will executive produce in addition to starring in the series.  “The Savant” marks the latest TV role for Chastain, who most recently appeared in the limited series “George and Tammy” opposite Michael Shannon, portraying George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Chastain won the Academy Award for best actress for her work in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” in 2022, and has earned nomination two other times — for “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Help.”

Crookston Park and Rec Spring swimming lessons will be held in April Session 1 for ages 3 to 5 is Tuesday and Thursday, April 4- 27, from 5:15-5:45 p.m., and that session is full, but Session 2 for six years old and older is from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. and still has room.

“We follow what the Red Cross Swimming program is with six levels of swimming competence,” said Crookston Pool manager Cody Brekken. “I have seven instructors, which is good.  That is always a big question on how lessons are run so that we can have a pretty sizable group.”

The Crookston Community Pool is looking for anyone 15 and older that would like to work at the pool as a lifeguard. “Summer is coming up, and we will hopefully expand our hours if we get enough lifeguards,” said Brekken.

The pool is currently holding the Wellness Swimming program on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Wellness is for kids ages 7 to 18 that have completed swim lessons and can swim the entire length of the pool.  “It is a fun program for them,” said Brekken. “They get some exercise, play games, and we still have room if anyone is interested in signing up.” The cost is $125.

The Park and Rec Summer activities Funfinder will come out on April 11, and the pool will offer Summer Swimming lessons.  “We will have a couple more lessons in the summer.  We will have day sessions in July and evening sessions in June,” said Brekken.

To register for any program, you can register online at https://www.crookston.mn.us/261/Online-Registration.

MIKE HASTINGS NAMED WISCONSIN BADGERS HEAD MEN’S HOCKEY COACH

h23_coach_twitter-e1680211871236293937

Wisconsin Director of Athletics Chris McIntosh named Crookston High School graduate Mike Hastings the next head coach of Wisconsin men’s hockey on Thursday.

The story below is from UW Athletics –

“I am incredibly excited about Mike Hastings becoming our men’s hockey coach,” McIntosh said. “He has a tremendous history of success at Minnesota State and, before that, with the Omaha Lancers. In my conversations with Mike, it is clear that he shares the values we have at Wisconsin and I know he is committed to the academic achievement and personal growth of our student-athletes. He is a great fit for our athletic department and I can’t wait for him to get started.”

Hastings brings a remarkable level of consistent excellence to Wisconsin, directing his teams to winning marks in all 25 seasons he’s served as a head coach. That record includes the last 11 seasons at Minnesota State, where he directed the Mavericks to eight NCAA tournament appearances (2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), a pair of Frozen Fours (2021, 2022) and the NCAA title game (2022). The COVID-19 pandemic prevented a ninth NCAA appearance in 2020. The winning also spans 14 seasons as head coach of the USHL’s Omaha Lancers.

“Wisconsin is one of college hockey’s great programs and I am both thrilled and humbled to have this opportunity,” Hastings said. “I want to thank Chris McIntosh for his belief in me. Badger hockey has a lot going for it – great alums, fans, facilities, tradition, a terrific campus and city. I can’t wait to get to Madison and start working with our team on building a winning culture on and off the ice.”

A three-time Spencer Penrose Award winner as NCAA coach of the year, his Mavericks captured eight conference regular-season championships during his 11 seasons behind the bench to help him earn league coach of the year five times while at MSU.

His MSU run includes regular-season conference titles in each of the last six seasons, winning the CCHA in 2022 and 2023, while conquering the WCHA four times from 2018-21. Minnesota State twice won the Mason Cup as CCHA tourney champions (2022, 2023) and a pair of Broadmoor Trophies as the WCHA tournament winners (2014, 2015) under Hastings direction.

Minnesota State won 20 games in a season twice during its first 16 years of NCAA Division I play, but surpassed the mark in all 11 seasons of Hastings’ tenure. MSU set its school mark with 38 victories during its run to the 2022 NCAA Championship game, its third 30-win season in a four-year stretch.

The Mavericks went 299-109-25 during his 11 years leading the program for a .719 win percentage which ranks him as the nation’s active leader in win percentage and gives him the third-highest mark in NCAA men’s hockey history.

While at Minnesota State, seven players under Hastings skated to All-America seasons including Dryden McKay, the 2022 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner as the nation’s top player. McKay was also a three-time top-three finalist for the Mike Richter Award given to the nation’s top goaltender. In addition, nine of his MSU players have skated in the NHL thus far.

On the international stage, Hastings directed Team USA to a silver medal at the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship and served as an assistant coach for the 2022 U.S. Olympic Team in Beijing and the 2022 U.S. National Team at the world championship. He also served as an assistant coach for Team USA’s National Junior Team at World Juniors in 2005 and 2003.

His collegiate coaching career began in 2008 with one year as an assistant at Minnesota, before he moved on for three seasons as associate head coach at Omaha (2009-12).

His impressive success began in the USHL when he served as head coach and general manager of the Omaha Lancers for 14 seasons (1994-2008). His teams won three Anderson Cups as regular-season champions (2002, 2005, 2008) and three Clark Cups as playoff winners (1998, 2001, 2008).

That all helped him win two USHL Coach of the Year honors (1997, 2002) and five USHL General Manager of the Year accolades (1997, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008).

He left for the college ranks in 2008 as the USHL’s all-time winningest coach at 529-210-56 at the time.

A 1993 St. Cloud State graduate, he skated two seasons with the Huskies (1986-88) before injury cut his playing career short.

Hastings and his wife, Jean Ann, are the parents of two grown children.

James Lee Spenst – Obit

jim_spenst_obit_pic473532

James Lee Spenst, 64, of Euclid, MN, was ushered into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital – Rochester, MN, lovingly surrounded by family. Jim courageously fought a 23-year battle with liver disease, with his beloved wife “Muffy” fighting for him to the very end.

Jim was born to Arthur and Pauline (Ewert) Spenst on June 27, 1958, in Devils Lake, ND. He was the oldest of six children and started school in the one-room schoolhouse not far from the family farm. Jim graduated from Langdon High School in 1976.

Jim started working as a stone mason in his teenage years and found that his hand took to the trowel quite nicely. He later co-founded the residential construction company, The Builders. In 1994, Jim began work as a Construction Superintendent for Construction Engineers (Grand Forks, ND) and joined Rice Lake Construction Group (Deerwood, MN) in 2016. Jim loved his work and enjoyed everyone he worked with. Jim was a master storyteller, and his sense of humor warmed his way into the hearts of many.

“10-10-88” was the most significant date in Jim’s life as the day he fully surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and was never the same. He went on to take mission trips to build churches in Africa and Ecuador and built dorms for Mt Carmel Camp in Towner, ND. Jim knew what it meant to be a follower of Jesus, and will be remembered as a humble, patient, kind, and loving person who was gracious and merciful to others.

Jim married the love of his life, Bonnie (Schulz) on July 27, 1991, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN, where Jim & Bonnie were members. Jim built their dream home in rural Euclid, MN where they lived most of their married life. Jim loved the great outdoors—hunting, fishing, and cutting wood with his beloved Husky, Mishka. He especially enjoyed his time in the lazy boy watching westerns and escaping the cold and snowy north to take vacations in Mexico with family and friends.

Jim’s daughter, Becky, held a special place in his heart and regarded him as the best dad in the world. He enjoyed trips to south Texas to spend time with his three grandkids.

Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie of rural Euclid, MN; daughter Rebecca Calabria of Livingston, TX; grandchildren Emily Calabria of Las Vegas, NV, Kayla and James Calabria of Livingston, TX; father Arthur Spenst of Wichita, KS; sisters Paula (Henry) Nist of Moore, OK, Bonnie (Todd) Mask of Amarillo, TX; brothers Terry (Stacey) Spenst of Wichita, KS, Nolan (Tracy) Spenst of Lander, WY, and Tyrone (Pauline) Spenst of Plainview, MN, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline (Ewert) Spenst.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Jim’s Family.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:00 PM, Monday, April 3, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN with Rev. Gregory Isaacson and Rev. Tyrone Spenst officiating.

VISITATION: 12 Noon until the time of service at 2:00 also at the church on Monday.
