Fisher School would like to recognize its Robotics team and their achievements this year. This past weekend, their high school and two Elementary teams competed in the MN VEX State Championship in St. Cloud.

7458A won the Build Award and won an invite to the World’s Championship in Dallas, TX! Team 7458B, with the help of St. Bernard’s from Thief River Falls, placed second overall in the State of MN. They were both awarded a World’s Championship Invite as well. The High School team 7845F has earned an invitation to the National Championship in Council Bluffs, IA.

All three teams have done exceedingly well this year in their teamwork and demonstrating their problem-solving skills. This is all possible because of Director Mike Neilson, who is also the High School Coach, Stacey Stromstad, and John Bylund, who coaches the Elementary teams.

David Mark Przybylski – Obit

David Mark Przybylski, age 65, of Myrtle Beach, SC died Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Oaks of Charleston in Charleston, SC.

David Przybylski was born on May 21, 1957, in Park Rapids, MN son of Gordon and Eleanor Przybylski.  Soon after birth, the family moved to Crookston, MN where he was raised with 7 siblings.  His father, Gordon, passed away on January 4, 1963, and his mother, Eleanor passed on November 29, 2013.

Dave spent much of his life in Crookston.  He attended Cathedral Grade School, graduated in 1975 from Mount Saint Benedict High School and 1979 from St. Cloud State University. His early days included delivering the Crookston Daily Times newspaper, Boy Scout camping trips and sports of all kinds including football, baseball and hockey. Those sports carried him through high school where Dave was a standout baseball pitcher, hockey goalie and football letterman. At St. Cloud State University, Dave achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology & Human Services as well as Business Management. He also focused on his love of baseball and was a starting pitcher.

Upon graduating from college, he began a professional career with the Boy Scouts of America as a District Executive. His drive and determination led to career promotions starting in Little Falls, MN, St. Joseph, MO and Kansas City, MO. While there he became a staunch Kansas City Chiefs football fan.  He married Soozie Rodseth and were blessed with son Anthony in 1982.

Dave made a career change in Kansas City to landscaping followed by mortgage banking. Health issues became prevalent and in 2021 he moved to Myrtle Beach, SC to be closer to his son. In 2023 he was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia and received ongoing hospice care until his passing.

Dave loved being with family, attending many reunions but nothing could compare to his time with his son Anthony.  They spent much time camping and working on baseball skills. He adjusted his job schedule in order to attend college baseball games whenever his son pitched.

His storytelling, compassion and love of life will be missed.

He is survived by his son Anthony (Alison) Przybylski of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister Mary Przybylski of Brooklyn Park, MN; brothers Leonard (Lori Carlson) Przybylski of Eagan, MN; Gordon (Yvonne) Przybylski of Perham, MN; Tom (Elizabeth) Przybylski of Cedar Falls, IA; Dan Przybylski, John Przybylski of Brooklyn Park, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Gordon Przybylski, mother Eleanor Solberg and sister Marlene Gray.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE: Brighton Lakes Residence Center, 707 Uniola Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579 at 11:00 am, on Friday, April 7, 2023.

Caroline Marion (Aagenes) Swenby Erickson – Obit

caroline_erickson_-_obituary_photo-e1678106340852551268

Caroline Marion (Aagenes) Swenby Erickson, 94, a lifelong area resident of Fertile, MN, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 1, 2023. She was surrounded by her loved ones after living a full and dedicated life.

She was born on October 14, 1928, in Garfield Township to Alfred and Hannah (Larson) Aagenes. Her parents raised a tight-knit, resourceful Norwegian family. Caroline was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile. She attended Country School District 27 West, and graduated from Gary, MN high school in 1946. She then joined the workforce by working in the office of Powers Brothers in Fargo, ND, who owned the Powers, Fargoan and Gardener Hotels.

On September 26, 1947, she married Warren Swenby. Since he was an over-the-road trucker, she often traveled with him in his semi to destinations in the Midwest and West Coast. They were blessed with four children, many adventures and loving moments to remember. The family tragically lost Warren in a truck/train accident in 1957. Caroline became the steady anchor for her four young children: Curtis (8), Willard (6), Dennis (4), and Barbara (2 months), as their lives were impacted by this devastating loss. The love of extended family and friends provided comfort and support during that very difficult time. Throughout her lifetime, Caroline continued to model determination, inner strength, and a “can-do” spirit to the next generations of her family.

On July 21, 1961, Caroline married Gilman Erickson, a farmer from the Fertile area. Caroline offered her help and resourcefulness to many aspects of the farm as she and Gilman worked together. They welcomed their daughter Gail into the family and involved themselves in many opportunities of leadership and advisership at church and service groups in which the children were involved. Gilman passed away in 1991, after sharing his love with Caroline, Gail and his “bonus family.”

Caroline believed that laughter is good for the soul. Her “dry sense of humor,” mixed with uncanny sarcasm, served her well. She enjoyed card and board games and was a faithful follower of vintage “COWBOY” T.V. shows. She never tired of the reruns!

Caroline loved her flower and vegetable gardens, and grape vines springing forth on her clothesline. She so enjoyed the decades-long friendships she made as a member of the Fertile Garden Club, Homemakers, Church Circles and WELCA. She was a joyful volunteer at church.

She loved to dance to her favorite two-steps, waltzes, and polkas. Even as her aged legs defied her the opportunity to get out on the dance floor, she listened and smiled as her hands and feet kept steady rhythm, all from the comfort of her chair.

She was a truly knowledgeable bird watcher! She studied and appreciated the characteristics of the many birds which daily visited her bird feeders. Even the clock on her kitchen wall was a tribute to her bird-watching interest, as it warbled, chirped, hooted and tweeted each hour, on the hour, much to her delight, and to the surprise of her kitchen guests.

“Grandma Caroline,” as we all called her, was a spunky, Norwegian lady who will be remembered for her storytelling about “days of old.” She carried forward family traditions of quilting, sewing, fancy stitchery, and often shared her fine work as gifts to her family members. She sewed and tailored wedding dresses, bridesmaids and prom dresses, altered pants and jackets, and could make torn or tattered play clothes look new again. She was a self-taught perfectionist! Her interest in quilting at the Concordia Church has inspired many family members to do the same.

Caroline generously shared her tips for cooking and baking, especially for creating Norwegian delicacies. Her legendary watermelon and beet pickles, as well as a wide variety of home-canned vegetables, always provided winter enjoyment. Her coffee pot was always on, and a hot cup was ready to be shared and enjoyed. Her signature lemon bars were sure to sweeten us up!

Caroline’s large, extended family has received her gifts of tradition, laughter, words of wisdom, recipes, her handcrafted sewing, jewelry art, memories and adventures, and her endearing love. She was quick to offer reliable advice, nurturing care and support, and heartfelt hugs.

Carrying on her legacy are her children, Willard (Darlene), Dennis (Jane), Barbara (Myles), and Gail (Darryl); 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lavonne; sister-in-law, Anne; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Warren Swenby and Gilman Erickson; beloved son, Curtis; two great grandsons, Austin and Jude; three brothers, Orvis, Millard, and Donald; two sisters, Helen and Anna; and infant sister, Arline.

Blessed be Caroline’s Memory!

Funeral: 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.

Interment: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, MN.

5 people shot in altercation near gun buyback event at Los Angeles beach

shutterstock_1238880025484612

Five people were injured in a shooting at a Los Angeles beach, just a few miles from where city officials had hosted a gun buyback event earlier in the day.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department and City Councilmember Tim McOsker, the LAPD’s Harbor Division responded to a radio call of a shooting at Royal Palms Beach around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.  The LAPD said in a statement on Sunday that ‘five male Hispanic victims were at a barbeque, at the beach, with a group of approximately 10-20 people.’  Two suspect approached the group and got into a physical altercation, and ‘the suspects then produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds, striking the victims. The suspects then fled the location in a vehicle.’  Five victims were struck by gunfire, and the police said that the “last information we received was two victims are in critical condition, two victims are in serious condition and one victim is in stable condition.”

A joint statement by McOsker and Janice Hahn, chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, read: “We’re outraged and saddened by the shooting at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro that has left 5 people injured. It’s tragically ironic that today we hosted a gun buy-back event just a few miles away from this location. Gun violence is wreaking havoc on our community … Royal Palms Beach will be closed Sunday and will close earlier on weekends as city officials work on plans to ensure safety and peaceful community use.”

Pres. Biden visits Selma, AL to make case for voting rights on anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday’

shutterstock_1739690654382213

President Joe Biden traveled to Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday.” Biden spoke at the Edmund Pettus Bridge — where in 1965 hundreds of civil rights marchers were attacked by police. Met by public outrage, the event marked a turning point and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Biden has spoken on voting rights often, and in his most recent State of the Union address he said: “In America, we must protect the right to vote, not suppress that fundamental right. We honor the results of our elections, not subvert the will of the people. We must uphold the rule of the law and restore trust in our institutions of democracy.”

Said Biden in his remarks at the bridge: “They forced the country to confront the hard truth and to act to keep the promise of America alive.”   The president said he believed voting is a “fundamental right,” but remains under assault decades later from conservative Supreme Court justices, state lawmakers and election deniers. Biden repeated his plea for Congress to pass new voting legislation named for the late Georgia Rep. John Lewis, who was beaten and suffered a skull fracture during “Bloody Sunday.” Democrats attempted last year to update the 1965 Voting Rights Act with a bill named after Lewis, but failed to gain enough support to break the Senate filibuster.

Biden ended his speeches saying “extremism will not prevail …. Silence, as the saying goes, silence is complicity. And I promise you, my administration will not remain silent. I promise you.” The president then marched across the bridge with civil rights advocates after his speech, the first time he did so since entering the White House.

shutterstock_2224454171353344

Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove and Benjamin Bratt have signed on to star in the Netflix romantic-comedy, Mother of the Bride. Sheilds wrote on Instagram: “Hoping my future mother of the bride duties are far less dramatic than this. So excited to get to work on #MotherOfTheBride.”

Netflix said in a press release about the film: “When Lana’s daughter Emma returns from a year abroad in London, she drops a bombshell on her mother: she’s getting married. On an island. Next month! Things only get worse when Lana discovers that the mystery man who stole her daughter’s heart just so happens to be the son of the man who broke hers years ago.”

Director Mark Waters (“He’s All That,” “Mean Girls”) — is directing the project, from a script written by Robin Bernheim (of ‘The Princess Switch‘ film franchise).
