James Lee Spenst – Obit

jim_spenst_obit_pic46725

James Lee Spenst, 64, of Euclid, MN, was ushered into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital Rochester, MN, lovingly surrounded by family. Jim courageously fought a 23-year battle with liver disease, with his beloved wife Muffy fighting for him to the very end.

Jim was born to Arthur and Pauline (Ewert) Spenst on June 27, 1958, in Devils Lake, ND. He was the oldest of six children and started school in the one-room schoolhouse not far from the family farm. Jim graduated from Langdon High School in 1976.

Jim started working as a stone mason in his teenage years and found that his hand took to the trowel quite nicely. He later co-founded the residential construction company, The Builders. In 1994, Jim began work as a Construction Superintendent for Construction Engineers (Grand Forks, ND) and joined Rice Lake Construction Group (Deerwood, MN) in 2016. Jim loved his work and enjoyed everyone he worked with. Jim was a master storyteller, and his sense of humor warmed his way into the hearts of many.

10-10-88 was the most significant date in Jims life as the day he fully surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and was never the same. He went on to take mission trips to build churches in Africa and Ecuador and built dorms for Mt Carmel Camp in Towner, ND. Jim knew what it meant to be a follower of Jesus, and will be remembered as a humble, patient, kind, and loving person who was gracious and merciful to others.

Jim married the love of his life, Bonnie (Schulz) on July 27, 1991, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN, where Jim & Bonnie were members. Jim built their dream home in rural Euclid, MN where they lived most of their married life. Jim loved the great outdoorshunting, fishing, and cutting wood with his beloved Husky, Mishka. He especially enjoyed his time in the lazy boy watching westerns and escaping the cold and snowy north to take vacations in Mexico with family and friends.

Jims daughter, Becky, held a special place in his heart and regarded him as the best dad in the world. He enjoyed trips to south Texas to spend time with his three grandkids.

Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie of rural Euclid, MN; daughter Rebecca Calabria of Livingston, TX; grandchildren Emily Calabria of Las Vegas, NV, Kayla and James Calabria of Livingston, TX; father Arthur Spenst of Wichita, KS; sisters Paula (Henry) Nist of Moore, OK, Bonnie (Todd) Mask of Amarillo, TX; brothers Terry (Stacey) Spenst of Wichita, KS, Nolan (Tracy) Spenst of Lander, WY, and Tyrone (Pauline) Spenst of Plainview, MN, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline (Ewert) Spenst.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Jims Family.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:00 PM, Monday, April 3, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN with Rev. Gregory Isaacson and Rev. Tyrone Spenst officiating.

VISITATION: 12 Noon until the time of service at 2:00 also at the church on Monday.

CHS ADVANCED WOODS AND BEGINNERS WELDING CLASSES VISIT AMERICAN CRYSTAL SUGAR COMPANY

sugar-2023-420x420121854-1

On Tuesday, March 28th, and Wednesday, March 29th, about 30 students from the Advanced Woods class and a Beginning Welding Class at the Crookston High School had the opportunity to tour American Crystal Sugar Company.

The tour consisted of seeing where the sugar beets come into the factory and the process it takes to turn the beets into sugar. Being able to see a raw product like a sugar beet become a finished product like sugar takes a lot of people and work to happen.

Another portion of the visit took place in the office conference room. This included hearing from different people in the factory about their positions and listing off the different parts of the factory that the students were going to see. This portion also included hearing about the opportunities at American Crystal Sugar in a variety of positions. Some of those positions require training or a degree. American Crystal Sugar has a great program that actually pays for a student’s tuition, books, and room and board. It is a great program for a student who loves hands-on work.

Travis Oliver who teaches both of these classes at the Crookston High School wanted to thank Cory Sandberg-HR Director and Zach Olson-Factory Manager for letting them visit the site and being very gracious to the students. Also, the gentlemen that helped with the giving the tours each day.

Pictures from the visit are below.

RIVERVIEW HEALTH OFFERS SHINGLES VACCINATION

riley-hemreck136782

Benjamin Franklin was on to something back in the 1700s when he coined the phrase, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’’ Granted, he was not talking about getting the shingles vaccination since the FDA did not approve it until 2006. However, the phrase still rings true when contemplating whether or not the shingles vaccination is worth a shot (make that two).

If you are 50 or older or have a weakened immune system, schedule an appointment to begin your two-dose shingles vaccination at RiverView Health. Just two quick shots in the arm spaced 2 to 6 months apart, can keep you from suffering from a painful rash of blisters that may take months to clear up.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most commonly, the rash occurs in a single stripe around either the left or the right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face. Shingles on the face can affect the eye and cause vision loss. In rare cases (usually in people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread on the body and look similar to a chickenpox rash.

Other symptoms of shingles can include

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Upset stomach

Effective Prevention

Riley Hermreck

“The only way to help prevent against getting shingles is obtaining the shingles vaccine,’’ shared RiverView Family Nurse Practitioner Riley Hermreck. “Currently, one in every three people will develop shingles in their lifetime. If you are 50 years or older, getting the two doses of the shingles vaccine not only will help prevent against shingles but is extremely effective.’’

Studies show that the shingles vaccination, Shingrix, is more than 90% effective in adults with healthy immune systems.

If you had shingles in the past, you should still be vaccinated to help prevent future disease occurrences. There is no specific length of time you need to wait after having shingles before you can receive the vaccination; however, you should ensure the shingles rash has gone away before being vaccinated.

Relationship to Chickenpox

Chickenpox and shingles are related because they are caused by the same virus (varicella-zoster virus). After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays inactive in the body. It can reactivate years later and cause shingles.

The CDC shares the following facts

  • You can get the shingles vaccination whether or not you remember having had chickenpox in the past.
  • More than 99% of Americans born on or before 1980 have had chickenpox, even if they do not remember having the disease.
  • Adults with weakened immune systems and no documented history of chickenpox disease, chickenpox vaccination, or shingles should talk to their primary care provider for further guidance.
  • If you previously received the shingles vaccine called Zostavax, you should now get the Shingrix vaccine. As of November 2020, the Zostavax vaccine is no longer available in the US.

Talk to your primary care provider about the benefits of being vaccinated against shingles, or call 281-9595 to schedule your vaccination.

FDA approves over-the-counter sales of overdose-reducing Narcan nasal spray

shutterstock_1962977485283748

On Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the approval of over-the-counter sales for Narcan, an overdose-reversing nasal spray. The FDA green light marks the first naloxone product approved for use without a prescription (only the 4-milligram dose of Narcan has been approved; other formulations, including higher dosages and injectable versions of naloxone, will continue to require a prescription.) Naloxone rapidly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, including in situations where fentanyl is involved. According to the FDA, in the 12-month period ending in Oct. 2022, the United States recorded 101,750 overdose deaths, primarily from opioids including fentanyl.

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said“Today’s approval of OTC naloxone nasal spray will help improve access to naloxone, increase the number of locations where it’s available and help reduce opioid overdose deaths throughout the country. We encourage the manufacturer to make accessibility to the product a priority by making it available as soon as possible and at an affordable price.”

The decision allows the drug to be made available at drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores, gas stations, and online shops. It’s not immediately clear when Narcan will be available for over-the-counter sale. The FDA said this timeline will be determined by the product’s manufacturer, Emergent BioSolutions, who said it will be available “by the late summer to account for manufacturing changes that will be implemented to support nonprescription packaging, as well as supply chain modifications.”

Emergent BioSolutions CEO Robert G. Kramer said in a statement: “Today’s landmark FDA OTC approval for Narcan nasal spray marks a historic milestone as we have delivered on our commitment to make this important emergency treatment widely accessible, given the alarming rates of opioid overdoses occurring across the country.”

Walgreens spokesperson Zoe Krey said it would offer Narcan later this year in stores and online: “Delivering access to this lifesaving medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose if administered in time is imperative, and Walgreens is already working with suppliers to bring this OTC medication to shelves.”

Pope Francis admitted to hospital with respiratory infection

shutterstock_163361345299409

The Vatican said Wednesday that Pope Francis has been admitted to a hospital in Rome after complaining of breathing difficulties in recent days, and have cancelled his meetings for the next two days. The Pope had appeared in relatively good form during his scheduled general audience Wednesday, though he noticeably grimaced while getting into and out of the “popemobile.” Francis’ audiences through Friday were canceled, and questions remained about the pope’s ability to participate in the Vatican’s Holy Week activities.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pontiff is being treated at the Gemelli hospital, where Francis underwent surgery in 2021. Bruni said in a statement: “In recent days Pope Francis has complained of some breathing difficulties,” adding that Covid-19 had been ruled out by the tests but the pope would “require a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy.” Bruni confirmed that testing at the hospital had determined that Pope Francis has a respiratory infection, and concluded:  “Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayers.

Francis had part of one lung removed when he was a young man due to a respiratory infection; and he spent 10 days at the Gemelli hospital following the 2021 surgery for an intestinal narrowing, which included the removal of 13 inches of his colon.  He had also been using a wheelchair for over a year due to strained ligaments in his right knee and a small knee fracture. The Pope has said he resisted having surgery for the knee problems because he didn’t respond well to the general anesthesia during the 2021 intestinal surgery; but. now has said the knee injury was healing and he has been shown walking more with a cane of late.

Francis is due to celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend, kicking off the Vatican’s Holy Week observances: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and finally Easter Sunday on April 9.
