Giving Hearts Day 2023 is the gift that keeps giving for the RiverView Foundation. As was previously announced, the February 9 online fundraiser for nonprofits was a huge success, with 242 gifts given to the Foundation by generous donors for more than $193,000. Since that announcement, the Dakota Medical Foundation has crunched the numbers and revealed that the RiverView Foundation placed first in raising funds in its division.

The recent news brings a prize of $10,000 to elevate the Foundation’s 2023 event total to more than $203,000.

“When I heard the news from Dakota Medical concerning the award and their gift to 2023 Giving Hearts Day, I was so thankful,’’ Foundation Director Randy Schoenborn shared. “I know that we could not do it without the generous support of our donors, who are the reason for our success.

“Thank you to Dakota Medical and all the generous people for their level of confidence, support, and trust to help keep quality medical care close to home.’’

According to the Dakota Medical Foundation, this year, 560 nonprofits throughout North Dakota and northwest Minnesota raised $26,155,280 through 41,907 donors. Charities have now raised nearly $165 million since the event’s inception in 2008.

SHARP RISES IN SYPHILIS CASES IN POLK AND MAHNOMEN COUNTIES

polk-norman-mahnomen-community-health-services242298

Polk-Norman-Mahnomen Community Health Services emphasizes the importance of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) prevention and testing as part of your overall health. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is estimated that 1 in 5 people in the United States have an STI, and nearly half of new STI infections occur in young people ages 15-24. The estimated direct medical costs attributed to STIs in the United States are nearly $16 billion annually.

In Minnesota, STIs remain at extremely high levels. One concern is the steady rise in syphilis cases from 2019 to 2022. New infections continued to be centered within the Twin Cities metropolitan area and among males, particularly among men who have sex with men. However, the presence of syphilis among females, especially those who are pregnant or of childbearing age, continues to be a concern because of the damage the infection can cause to the unborn fetus. It can also cause damage to organs and the nervous system, even causing death. In 2021, Minnesota had a 33% increase in syphilis cases. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reports this rising trend for Polk and Mahnomen Counties below:

Total Syphilis Cases in Polk County:

  • 2019- 2
  • 2020- 2
  • 2021- 1
  • 2022- 5

Total Syphilis Cases in Mahnomen County:

  • 2019- 2
  • 2020- 6
  • 2021- 10
  • 2022- 9

Syphilis can be cured with antibiotics. Don’t hesitate. Get tested! Some STI testing can be done with a simple urine sample, and screening for HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis is a simple finger poke.

Getting yourself tested for STIs is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health. Testing is quick, simple, and confidential.

Contact Polk County Public Health for information about STIs, birth control options, and affordable clinic services. STI testing is available by appointment and is a confidential, low-to-no-cost service. Please call 218-281-3385 or text 218-280-1117 to make an appointment. No one will be turned away for inability to pay.

GOVERNOR WALZ SIGNS BILL PROVIDING EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF FUNDING

minnesota-seal-e1584661193709231508

As Minnesota food shelves see an increase in demand, Governor Tim Walz signed into law $5 million in emergency funding to food shelves.

“Minnesota’s food shelves play an essential role in helping Minnesotans feed their families and ease rising food costs,” said Governor Walz. “As we continue to work to lower costs and make life easier for Minnesotans, this funding will allow food shelves to continue to help working families put food on the table.”

“With this bill, we have the opportunity to help thousands of Minnesotans struggling with food security,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “As more Minnesotans look to food shelves to make ends meet, this bill provides critical support to food shelves across the state and helps Minnesota’s working families and their children thrive. Because without full stomachs, Minnesotans cannot work, learn, and grow.”

Chapter 11, House File 213, provides $5 million in emergency funding to the Department of Human Services for food shelf programs through Hunger Solutions. As demand for food shelf services rises, this funding will be distributed as quickly as possible.
