He absolutely loves going for long walks and sniffing out whatever clues he can find for his next mystery case. His most recent mystery involved a missing squeaky ball in the enrichment room. With the use of his instinctive mystery-solving skills, he was able to track it down and restore it to its rightful place, the toy basket.

In addition to his magnificent clue-binding skills, Sherlock loves to learn new tricks. With a tasteful treat, Sherlock is very eager to please his companion. So far, he has learned a few of the basic commands, but he is willing to expand his horizons with proper instruction.

As a bonus to his mystery-solving skills, and willingness to please, Sherlock is a dapper young pup who always looks his best. His sleek black and white coat accentuates his sky-blue eyes, which are sure to draw your attention.

Sherlock would thrive in a home that is willing to take him on new adventures and show him an assortment of new tricks. With his good looks and a little bit of hope, Sherlock wants more than anything to have a home before the summer months. Come in and visit him Monday through Saturday from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

CHEDA COMPLETES AGREEMENT ON PROPERTY BETWEEN THREE LOCAL BUSINESSES

chedalogo555566

The Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority met before the City Council meeting on Monday night for a special meeting.

The board first approved the minutes from their meetings on January 17 and 23 and their Payables for February. The CHEDA checks for the month totaled $72,294.32, and the March 1 CHEDA checks for $66,578.15.

HOUSING REPORT

The board then began discussing their Housing Report for the Oak Court Apartments. They currently have ten vacant units after they issued some lease violations, pet policy, and lease terminations to make Oak Court a more pleasant place for long-term tenants.
They had also updated their community room with a sitting area for tenants, where they purchased a couch, a love seat, and mounted TV, which tenants used to watch the Super Bowl on February 12. They had also ordered new blinds for the common area and provided a table and chairs for residents to enjoy on each floor.
They were also working to finalize their advertisement on housinglink.com and were working to have it also be advertised on KROX’s website as well as be recommended to Tri-Valley and Alluma.
They are also finalizing recertifications for all Oak Court residents, with the new rents going into effect on April 1.

Section 8
The Section currently has 141 Vouchers and ten clients still searching for housing. They are continuing to pull their waitlist every two weeks for clients.
They were also working on completing their Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP) Report by Wednesday, March 1.

MAIN AGENDA

The board had completed an agreement on a 35-foot strip of property that ran between B&E Meats, Total Lawn Care, and RB&B Electric. “There’s been a talk of developing that, and negotiations have been ongoing for a significant period of time about how we would deal with that property because each of those entities were interested in it. That’s now been resolved, so what will happen is that the property will be split width-wise, 17 feet on one side and 17 feet on the other. RB&B Electric and B&E Meats will get one-half of the first half (8.5 feet each), and Total Lawn Care will get the other half. The businesses will each pay for it. Total Lawn Care will pay $1,500, and RB&B and B&E Meats each will pay $750, and the city will convey those parcels of land for their use now and in the future.” The board approved the sale.

B3 Grant

The board heard an update on their B3 Grants that they had created new funds and resources that new businesses could use to start in Crookston. “What we are looking at doing is providing resources to entities within our community and hopefully downtown where they will be able to use monies for external use, like remodeling buildings. Also, if they meet the criteria, which is currently being redrafted, we can give essentially development money to assist with the remodeling or reusing of their buildings.” City Administrator “Corky” Reynolds and Community Development Director Kari Kirschbaum said they would continue to work on the redevelopment of the grant.

OTHER BUSINESS

The board finished the meeting by making the final approval of their operating budget for 2023, which they approved unanimously.

The next CHEDA meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 21, at 7:00 a.m. in Valley Technology Park.

Conservative Supreme Court justices skeptical of Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan

shutterstock_376433869395657

Conservative Supreme Court justices seemed skeptical about the legality of President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief plan — announced by Biden in August and originally scheduled to take effect last fall. The program would allow eligible borrowers to cancel up to $20,000 in debt, but has been blocked since the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary hold in October. Questions remain as to whether the challengers have legal standing to sue, while there are also doubts it will ever go into effect.

Biden’s program would cancel up to $10,000 in debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 a year (or couples who file taxes jointly and earn less than $250,000 annually). Pell Grant recipients, who are the majority of borrowers, would be eligible for an additional $10,000 in debt relief. The overall program could help more than 40 million borrowers, the administration has said.

The high court heard arguments in two cases on Tuesday, one brought by six states, and the other brought by two people, Myra Brown and Alexander Taylor, who hold student loan debt. The challengers argue that the administration’s proposal violates the Constitution and federal law, partly because it circumvents Congress, which they said has the sole power to create laws related to student loan forgiveness.

Of the six conservative justices, only Justice Amy Coney Barrett repeatedly probed whether challengers had legal standing. Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, two justices the Biden administration may have been targeting as potential votes against standing, focused their questions on the major questions doctrine. That could indicate they believe the challengers have standing. The law in question, the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, or HEROES Act, states that the government can provide relief to recipients of student loans when there is a “national emergency,” allowing the government to take action to ensure people are not in “a worse position financially” as a result of the emergency. The challengers say the language in the HEROES Act is not specific enough to authorize a proposal as broad as Biden’s plan.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the cases by the end of June.

President Biden nominates Julie Su as next labor secretary

shutterstock_1788003986753493

President Biden will nominate the current deputy, Julie Su, as his next labor secretary, replacing the departing incumbent, former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Walsh announced his intention to leave the administration earlier this month to lead the National Hockey League Players’ Association. Su will serve as the acting secretary until the Senate acts on her nomination.

Su is a former California official civil rights attorney and former head of California’s labor department, and was central to negotiations between labor and freight rail companies last year, working to avert a strike. If confirmed by the Senate, Su would also be the first Asian-American in the Biden administration to serve in the Cabinet at the secretary level.

President Biden said in a statement that Su is a “champion for workers… Julie is a tested and experienced leader, who will continue to build a stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive economy that provides Americans a fair return for their work and an equal chance to get ahead. She helped avert a national rail shutdown, improved access to good jobs free from discrimination through my Good Jobs Initiative, and is ensuring that the jobs we create in critical sectors like semiconductor manufacturing, broadband and healthcare are good-paying, stable and accessible jobs for all.”

Biden had been under pressure from the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and other Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) advocates to select Su to head the department. This administration was the first in more than two decades to not have a Cabinet secretary of AAPI descent. If confirmed, Su would also expand the majority of women serving in the president’s Cabinet.

Ray Liotta receives posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

shutterstock_2161130069224400

The late actor Ray Liotta, star of films including Goodfellas and Field of Dreams, was posthumously presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Liotta passed away last May at the age of 67. Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said in a statement: “Ray Liotta’s all-around career made him a triple threat and sadly his passing was devastating to the entertainment world. The characters he portrayed will always be etched in Hollywood’s film history.”

Liotta’s daughter, 24-year-old Karsen Liotta, accepted the star on his behalf, saying: “I’m so touched to be accepting this honor on behalf of my dad. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He was a one of a kind actor and the best friend, brother and father anyone could have asked for. I lucked out with you .. If you have a Ray in your life, you’re lucky. I love you so much. Thank you for your work and the imprint you left on me and all of those who love you. Everyone deserves a Ray in their life.”

Elizabeth Banks, who directed Liotta in one of his final projects, Cocaine Bear, and actor Taron Egerton (who starred with Liotta in Black Bird), spoke at the event in honor of their late colleague and friend.  Banks said: “I always admired his acting, but I genuinely enjoyed him as a human. Although he’s known for playing tough guys, I found him to be charming and a little mischievous which made him charming as an actor and as a man, and truly perfect for ‘Cocaine Bear’ …When any actor of Ray’s caliber puts trust in you as a director, it’s a gift. But Ray gave me so much more. Ray’s respect for me as a director, as his boss on set, meant everything to me because if you can direct Henry Hill, you can do f––– anything in this town.”  Said Egerton: “He was one of those rare artists that brought all of himself into his work, all of his intensity, all of his vulnerability and, in the case of our show, all of his love. I was deeply inspired by Ray, he was the epitome of an actor’s actor.”

The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association has announced the All-State Academic Individual wrestling team and it is an impressive collection of wrestlers.  Crookston’s Ethan Boll was named the team at 220 pounds.  The story from the Guilotine and the list of wresters are below.

The 2023 MWCA All-State Academic Individual Wrestling Team currently holds the bragging rights for the best student-athlete squad ever recognized by the MWCA. Not only did they surpass the 200 mark in nominations (the highest in at least 15 years.) They also have the highest average GPA of any MWCA All-State Individual Team with an astounding 3.78 GPA. This team is made up of great students who are also some of the best wrestlers that all of Minnesota has to offer. Earning a spot on this team can be more challenging than making the varsity squad at most schools. The MWCA only takes the top two student-athletes at each weight class to be recognized for this honor. With over 200 nominees and only 28 that receive the award, it’s quite a feat to be recognized!

This year’s team had nine students who boast a perfect 4.0 unweighted cumulative GPA! Beau Hudoba of Ogilvie, Deagan Captain and David Revering of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie, Zach Hanson of Lakeville North, Seth Newby of Bemidji, Luke Knudsen of New London-Spicer, Cade Jackson of Detroit Lakes, Soren Herzog of Simley and Will Sather of Eden Prairie. Each of these students currently finds themselves in the state rankings or has been past state place winners. Not only making them great students but also top-notch athletes!

This year’s roster includes 18 seniors and ten juniors. Class AA leads the way with eleven students on the team, followed by Class A with ten and Class AAA with seven. All six juniors who made the team in 2022 have also earned the honor again in 2023. These student-athletes are Dylan Dauffenbach of Stillwater, Zach Hanson, Cade Jackson, Max McEnelly of Waconia, Soren Herzog, and Gavin Nelson. You can often find this group of wrestlers at the top of the podium. They have amassed 17 state titles won by ten different student-athletes. McEnelly leads the way with three titles. Other state champions include Jack Nelson of Mound-Westonka, Nolan Ambrose of Jackson County Central, Koy Buesgens of New Prague, Zach Hanson, Ryder Rogotzke of Stillwater, Thomas Dineen of Benson, Ethan Boll of Crookston, Gavin Nelson of Simley and Will Sather. Many of these wrestlers are far above the 3.0 GPA requirement for consideration for this honor. 24 of 28 have over a 3.5 GPA. They definitely know how to work hard in the classroom as well as on the mat! This is even more evident by the fact this team has combined to win a total of 4648 matches over their impressive careers while attaining many other academic honors in their high school careers.

The members of this team are selected by using the following criteria:

  • Cumulative GPA – example: 3.95 x 2 = 790 points
  • Overall matches wrestled – wins and losses – 1 point per match
  • Winning percentage – 77% = 77 points
  • State Tournament Participation – 25 points per year
  • State Tournament Placement – 1st (50 points), 2nd (40), 3rd (35), 4th (25), 5th (20) and 6th (10)

This year’s group was made up of individuals from 24 schools. Simley, Jackson County Central, Stillwater, and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie each had two students selected. It also just happens that those four schools also have solid wrestling teams! There is typically a correlation between success in the classroom and success on the mat. These students and their teammates most definitely understand that.

This year our award winners are exceptional. There were also many outstanding nominees that we were unable to recognize. Our state’s coaches do a wonderful job of nominating their wrestlers. We have wrestlers from all over the state each year. Thanks to our dedicated coaches for taking the time to get their wrestlers recognized.

The 28 honorees will be recognized and awarded plaques by the MWCA during the state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, March 2-4.
