Texas Gov. Greg Abbott working to pardon man convicted of murdering BLM protester

A Texas man convicted of murder for killing a Black Lives Matter protester in July 2020 will likely receive a pardon from the state’s Gov. Greg Abbott.

Abbott said in a statement that Texas law allows him to request that the Board of Pardons and Paroles determine whether a person should be granted a pardon. Texas law only allows the governor the ability to issue a pardon after a recommendation has been made by the board. Abbott shared on Twitter that he would be “working as swiftly as Texas law allows: to pardon Daniel Perry … Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney … I have made that request and instructed the board to expedite its review.”

Abbott added that he was ‘certain’ that the board would agree to recommend a pardon, stating that he anticipated approving it “as soon as it hits my desk … Additionally, I have already prioritized reining in rogue District Attorneys, and the Texas Legislature is working on laws to achieve that goal.”

Perry, a sergeant in the U.S. Army, was found guilty of murdering Garrett Foster. The Austin American-Statesman reported that Perry shot the protester five times as he approached his car while allegedly carrying an AK-47 during a march after the death of George Floyd.  Perry’s lawyers said during his trial that the 28-year-old Foster raised his weapon at Perry before he was killed, and that Perry had fired in self-defense. Witnesses said that Foster never raised his weapon and no video or photos shown at the trial indicated that he did.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argued that Perry had demonstrated anger towards the protesters, and stated in posts made to social media that ‘people could get away with shooting protesters in Texas.’  Prosecutor Guillermo Gonzalez said: “This is an age-old story about a man who couldn’t keep his anger under control. It’s not about police, and it’s not about protest marchers.”

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), two Wisconsin police officers were killed on Saturday following a shootout with a suspect during a traffic stop in Cameron, WI. Officials said in a news release that the officers were from two different police departments.

The Wisconsin DOJ said a shootout began after a Chetek Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop at 3:38 p.m., local time, in Cameron, Wisconsin, on Saturday. The Chetek officer and an officer from the Cameron Police Department were killed at the scene, according to officials. The suspect was also killed, the state’s justice department confirmed in the news release.

I am thinking of their families and the Chetek and Cameron Police Departments at this incredibly difficult time.”  Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers tweeted out his condolences on Sunday to family and friends of the two officers: “Our hearts are heavy for the Chetek and Cameron police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty yesterday. Kathy and I are praying for the officers’ families, colleagues, and the Barron County community mourning this tragic loss.”

According to the Wisconsin DOJ, DCI is leading the investigation into the case and is working alongside Barron County Sheriff’s Office, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.  Chetek Chief of Police Ron Ambrozaitis said in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page on Sunday: “Our community is experiencing a time of great tragedy. As we continue to work through this, please respect the privacy of our law enforcement officers and their families. We want to thank the community for their continued support and overwhelming acts of kindness. The support has been tremendous!”

Multiple outlets reported over the weekend that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have split after six years together. Entertainment Tonight was first to report the news, which comes as Swift is traveling the country for her sold-out Eras tour.

Swift, 33, and Alwyn, 32, were first linked in 2016, and have kept their relationship private over the years. Sources previously said that Swift “is very happy” in their relationship: “He is her rock. Their relationship is mature and wonderful.”

The pair collaborated on music together over the pandemic, with Swift’s 2020 albums Folklore and Evermore.  Each album included collaborations with Alwyn, who wrote several songs under the pseudonym William Bowery. Alwyn is credited as a co-writer on “Betty” and “Exile” from Folklore and on “Champagne Problems,” “Coney Island,” and “Evermore” on Evermore. Folklore won the Grammy Award in 2021 for “Album of the Year,’ and during her acceptance speech, Swift gave a shout-out to the actor: “Joe is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine.”

Prior to her relationship with Alwyn, Swift dated Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOLD PSEO MEETING WEDNESDAY EVENING

pseo593795

The Crookston School District will have a Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO) meeting at the Crookston High School media center on Wednesday, April 12 at 5:00 p.m.

PSEO is a program that allows high school students to take college courses for free and earn college credits while in high school. PSEO is through the state of Minnesota. The state of Minnesota will pay for your child to take college classes through any college in Minnesota that offer PSEO, said Crookston High School Guidance Counselor Tara Klein. It is a great opportunity to start saving money for college. We have kids who take one or two classes in their junior and senior years, or they could go full-time. My daughter is a good example, and she is getting her AA degree before she actually graduates from high school.

Besides saving money with free college classes, PSEO also allows some students to skip past the general classes at college and go directly into the program they are going into at college. It is definitely saving students and parents a lot of money.

PSEO is open for high school juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher for a majority of colleges, which is set by each college. Northland Community and Technical College is offering courses to sophomores in career and technical education courses.

Who should attend the PSEO meeting at the high school? Anybody who would like to have more information on PSEO, said Klein. If your student is already registered for PSEO it is mandatory for both the parent/guardian and student.

PSEO for 10th Grade Students
Eligible 10th grade students may enroll in one state-paid Career Technical Education (CTE) course during the first term of PSEO enrollment. Not all institutions offer PSEO to 10th grade students or have CTE courses. Visit the PSEO for 10th Graders pageto learn about student and course requirements for the 10th Grade CTE Pathway. Please contact each institution for specific course questions.

The following postsecondary institutions in Minnesota are eligible to offer PSEO courses to Minnesota students. Each institution has different course offerings as well as application requirements and deadlines. Students and parents may also contact a counselor at their high school for information about the PSEO program.

CROOKSTON MAN IN FEDERAL CUSTODY FOR CHILD SEX/PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

Jorge Alberto Torres Jr., 51 of Crookston, is facing four felony charges in three child pornography cases.  Torres was a balloon artist, DJ, and entertainer at several Crookston community events, including Ox Cart Days Festivals, Crookston Chamber of Commerce community events, and kid’s birthday parties over the years.  Although none of the charges stem from those activities.

Torres is being charged with two counts of felony soliciting a child to engage in a sexual act with maximum penalties of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.  The charges stem from an unlicensed child care center being run out of Torres’ home while he allegedly hid a camera in the bathroom and took videos of his victims in the shower.

Torres is also charged with one county of first-degree criminal sexual conduct after he allegedly sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl at his child care center.  The charge has a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine with a minimum sentence of 12 years.

In the third case, a 16-year-old girl told a school official that she had been sexually abused since the age of eight years old.

Torres is scheduled for a motions hearing in his federal case on April 27.
