‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Caterina Scorsone loses home, pets in fire

shutterstock_749895499105509

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 actress Caterina Scorsone announced on social media that she and her family escaped a fire that destroyed their home and killed their four pets. Scorsone posted on Instagram, along with a photo of her ruined house, then other images of the home, family and their fur babies: “A couple of months ago my house burned down. While getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub. When I looked down the hallway a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house. One thing about fires: they happen fast. I had about two minutes to get my three kids out of the house, and we escaped with less than shoes on our feet. But we got out. And for that I am eternally grateful.”

Scorsone added that she and her family are still grieving the animals they lost: “But we are lucky we got to love them at all. This is not a post about a fire. This is a post about community. This is a love letter to the incredible people that showed up and the incredible ways that they did.  Thank you to the firefighters and the investigators (thank you Trey!) Thank you to my neighbor who answered our frantic knocks at her door. Thank you to the parents at my kids’ school who sent toys and books, my friends at @greysabc and @shondaland who sent clothing and supplies, my sisters who flew in to handle logistics so that I could be with my kids.”

Scorsone concluded her post: “Thank you to my team who made everything easier. What we learned is that the only thing that matters are the people (and beings) that you love. The only thing that matters is community. We would not be here without it and we are so grateful. Thank you. Here are some photos to honor the space we once called home, to say goodbye to the animals that loved us so well, and to celebrate that we have the only thing we ever really needed: each other. -Love, Caterina ❤

CARE AND SHARE BOARD EXPRESSES INTEREST IN WASHINGTON SCHOOL BUILDING

school-board-care-and-share879555

The Crookston School Board met in a special meeting on Monday afternoon in the Crookston School District office. After approving the new superintendent contract, they heard from the Care and Share Center board about its interest in the Washington School building.

Care and Share Center board members Faye Overgaard, Kari Brault, Allen Dragseth, Rick Keller, and center Director Jane Freeman attended the meeting. They expressed their interest in the Washington School building. The Care and Share joins the City of Crookston as expressing interest in the Washington School building when the district moves out.

The Care and Share is located at the old Cathedral School building at 220 East 3rd Street in Crookston. The building is over 100 years old, and the building maintenance and upkeep, along with getting it handicapped accessible, would be extremely costly, so they are looking for options. “Care and Share is a facility that goes on every day, day in and day out, and we are looking for another place that could house our residents better,” said Care and Share Board member Faye Overgaard. “Like any building, there is maintenance and upkeep, and we have been putting a lot of money into the old Cathedral School building. It is a good structure, but we would really like our building to be handicap accessible, and to do that, it would involve an elevator, and Washington school is all on one level. I think the school would service us well with a commercial kitchen, a lot of space, and windows.”

Superintendent Dave Kuehn said they could get Rick Niemela, the district transportation and building and grounds director, to give them an informal walk-through of Washington School to see if it was something they would be interested in. Care and Share Director added that Washington School was close to Hugo’s, Walmart, and other places the residents frequent, so that would be nice to be closer to those businesses.

The Care and Share representatives at the meeting said they have meeting rooms, offices, a thrift store, a food shelf, a chapel, a dining room, and a kitchen, along with rooms for residents that need a place to stay, so having a large building like Washington would be nice. Care and Share averages anywhere from 35 to 40 people staying per night; at one point, they had 15 kids at the center. Grants, donations, and volunteers support the center. They are applying for grants and asking the state for $1,000,000 in Capital Improvement funds to help with the center and make it handicap accessible.

The next regular Crookston School Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 24, at 5:00 p.m. in the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra room.

MNDOT ENACTS NO TRAVEL ADVISORY IN MOST OF NW MINNESOTA

road-conditions686802

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has enacted a no travel advisory on multiple highways in northwest Minnesota due to blizzard conditions. MnDOT snowplows continue to operate, but motorists are advised not to travel in these areas until conditions improve.   The picture below has the roads with no travel advised in purple.

Purple roads are no travel advised

Motorists should plan accordingly. No Travel Advised means that the roadway has deteriorated and/or visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel; there are reports of intermittent whiteout conditions; and some weather conditions can be severe enough that road treatments are not effective, and conditions can become life-threatening for stranded travelers. Drivers should plan accordingly with an emergency supply kit and clothing for extreme cold.

MnDOT snowplow operators will do their part to make highways safe and motorists should remember to:
-Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning
-Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
-Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
-Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
-Turn off the cruise control.
-Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
-Don’t drive distracted.

Important: road conditions shown on 511mn.org only reflect state highway conditions. Please check with your county, city and township for their road conditions and travel guidance.
