CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOLD PSEO MEETING TUESDAY EVENING

pseo848360

The Crookston School District will have a Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO) meeting at the Crookston High School media center on Tuesday, April 4 at 5:45 p.m.

PSEO is a program that allows high school students to take college courses for free and earn college credits while in high school.  “PSEO is through the state of Minnesota.  The state of Minnesota will pay for your child to take college classes through any college in Minnesota that offer PSEO,” said Crookston High School Guidance Counselor Tara Klein. “It is a great opportunity to start saving money for college. We have kids who take one or two classes in their junior and senior years, or they could go full-time.  My daughter is a good example, and she is getting her AA degree before she actually graduates from high school.”

Besides saving money with free college classes, PSEO also allows some students to skip past the general classes at college and go directly into the program they are going into at college. “It is definitely saving students and parents a lot of money.”

PSEO is open for high school juniors and seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher for a majority of colleges, which is set by each college.  Northland Community and Technical College is offering courses to sophomores in career and technical education courses.

Who should attend the PSEO meeting at the high school?  “Anybody who would like to have more information on PSEO,” said Klein. “If your student is already registered for PSEO it is mandatory for both the parent/guardian and student.”

PSEO for 10th Grade Students
Eligible 10th grade students may enroll in one state-paid Career Technical Education (CTE) course during the first term of PSEO enrollment. Not all institutions offer PSEO to 10th grade students or have CTE courses. Visit the PSEO for 10th Graders page to learn about student and course requirements for the 10th Grade CTE Pathway. Please contact each institution for specific course questions.

The following postsecondary institutions in Minnesota are eligible to offer PSEO courses to Minnesota students. Each institution has different course offerings as well as application requirements and deadlines. Students and parents may also contact a counselor at their high school for information about the PSEO program.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVES NEW SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACT

randy-berquist1666594

The Crookston School Board held a special meeting on Monday afternoon at the Crookston High School District Office to approve a contract with the new superintendent, Dr. Randy Bergquist.

The board unanimously approved a three-year contract with Dr. Bergquist as the next Crookston School District Superintendent beginning on July 1, 2023.

The contract’s first year will pay Bergquist $148,000, year two will be $151,000, and the third year will be $154,000, not including benefits. The contract also includes a technology stipend for updating the Crookston School District’s social media. “We got the signed contract back from Dr. Bergquist, and he agreed to pretty much everything. We hammered it out quickly, and the school board approved the contract, and he will start July 1,” said School Board Chair Frank Fee. “He is very active on social media promoting the school district in Osakis, where he is now. We gladly will pay him the stipend to have him actively promote the district on social media. Everything else is the same as previous superintendents, and we are happy to have him on board.”

The next regular Crookston School Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 24, at 5:00 p.m. in the Crookston High School Choir/Orchestra room.

CROOKSTON TRACK & FIELD TEAMS COMPETE IN PINE-TO-PRAIRIE AT CONCORDIA

alejandro-rodriguez-419x420156443-1

The Crookston Pirate Boys and Girls Track & Field teams were back at Concordia College in Moorhead on Monday night for the Pine-To-Prairie Indoor Meet.

The Crookston Pirate Girls team finished eighth out of 14 teams and the Pirate Boys team finished 14th out of 15 teams. Barnesville won the girl’s division handily scoring 102.5 points. East Grand Forks won the boy’s division.

GIRLS
Cassie Solheim had another strong showing for the Pirates on the girl’s side as she took second place in the long jump and fourth place in the 200 meters with a time of 28.82 which was slightly better than her last meet. “Cassie was really strong again today for us,” said Pirates coach Amy Boll. “To be able to do it in so many different events just shows how good of an athlete she is.” Crookston’s relay teams also both placed once again with the 4X200 team of Halle Winjum, Ashlyn Bailey, Isabelle Smith, and Cassie Solheim taking sixth place with a time of 2:01.45. The 4X400 team of Chloe Boll, Isabelle Smith, Carley Knutson, and Sam ZiiZii also finished in the top ten with a ninth place finish and time of 5:04.90.

Back on the field side of things Libby Salentine finished sixth place in the shot put giving the Pirates three more points. Crookston also had some success at Pole Vaulting with both Halle Winjum taking third place, and Chloe Boll taking seventh place. “I thought our Pole Vaulters did really well today also,” said Pirates coach Amy Boll. “Reilly Stroot has been doing a great job coaching our Pole Vaulters and it’s been fun to watch.”

BOYS
On the boy’s side of things, Thor Harbott led the way finishing in the top ten in two events. Harbott took sixth place in the 800 meters and ninth place in the 1600 meters. He also filled in for Makoti Weber who couldn’t run one of the relay races. “To see Thor step up like that as a senior and fill in was great,” said Pirates coach Wayne Folkers. “He already does a lot and that was nice to see him step up when we needed someone to fill in.”

Speaking of Makoti Weber, he finished sixth place in the Pole Vault to give the Pirates three more points.

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announces GOP presidential bid

shutterstock_62394695349048

Former Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas announced on Sunday that he will run for president in the 2024 election. Hutchinson, 72, revealed that he would run for the office in an interview with ABC’s “This Week”, with a formal announcement to come later in April. Hutchinson said: “I have made a decision, and my decision is I’m going to run for president of the United States. The reason is, I’ve traveled the country for six months, I hear people talk about the leadership of our country. I’m convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts.”

Hutchinson said the current political landscape in the United States “one of the most unpredictable political environments” he has seen in his lifetime, adding, “So my message of experience, of consistent conservatism and hope for our future in solving problems that face Americans, I think that that resonates.”

Hutchinson is adding his name to the growing list of Republican candidates going head-to-head with former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. Hutchinson said in his interview with This Week that Trump’s indictment in New York “adds to the unpredictability” and he believes the former president should drop out of the race: “The office is more important than any individual person … And so for the sake of the office of the presidency, I do think that’s too much of a sideshow and distraction and he needs to be able to concentrate on his due process and there is a presumption of innocence.”

The former governor also clarified that he considers himself a member of the “non-Trump lane” rather than the “anti-Trump lane,” saying that he urged Republicans to “let the system work” as Trump defends himself from criminal prosecution.

Death toll rises to 32 after tornado outbreaks throughout South and Midwest

shutterstock_1703103160-1807095

The major storm system that traveled through the South and the Midwest beginning on Friday has killed at least 32 people. The National Weather Service has confirmed at least 31 tornadoes across 9 states on Friday and Saturday, with more than 28 million people across the South and Midwest under a tornado watch going into Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service field office in Nashville, thirteen of the deaths occurred in Tennessee, where an EF-2 tornado struck Wayne and Lewis counties on Friday night, later also hitting McNairy and Hardin counties. Nine of the deaths were in buildings that were destroyed down to their foundations in McNairy County, according to McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck, who added that a tornado crossed the entire county and stayed on the ground for over 30 miles causing “every kind of damage imaginable.”

The NWS confirmed that a “catastrophic” tornado moved through the metro area of Little Rock, Arkansas, in Pulaski County Friday afternoon. According to preliminary NWS information, the EF3 tornado had winds up to 165 mph and a path length spanning 20-25 miles. Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. tweeted: “Property damage is extensive and we are still responding.”

President Joe Biden said in a statement Sunday that he has been in touch with officials in affected states, including Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Delaware, and that he had directed his administration “to help with immediate needs and long-term rebuilding.”  Biden said: “While we are still assessing the full extent of the damage, we know families across America are mourning the loss of loved ones, desperately waiting for news of others fighting for their lives, and sorting through the rubble of their homes and businesses. There’s nothing we can do to heal the hole left in the hearts of far too many families who lost loved ones this weekend, but we will be there every step of the way as they rebuild and recover.”
