Actor, singer and activist Harry Belafonte dies at age 96

Famed actor, singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte died Tuesday at his home in Manhattan at the age of 96. Belafonte’s longtime representative, Ken Sunshine, confirmed in a press release that Belafonte died Tuesday morning “of congestive heart failure at his New York home at the age of 96, his wife Pamela [Frank] by his side.

The Jamaican-American Belafonte rose to prominence as an entertainer in the 1950s, appearing in films like Carmen Jones (1954), Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), and The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959). Belafonte made acting history twice: he was the first black man to win a Tony (in 1954 for ‘Almanac’) and the first to win an Emmy (in 1959 for ‘An Evening with Belafonte’).

His successful music career which skyrocketed with the release of the 1955 album Belafonte. Known as the ‘King of Calypso’, Belafonte brought Caribbean music to a global audience with his 1956 breakthrough album, Calypso, featuring the hits “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” “Jump in the Line” and “Jamaica Farewell.”  Calypso became the first LP ever to sell one million copies; and to this day, Belafonte remains one of the best-selling recording artists in history.

Despite his success in the entertainment world, Belafonte saw himself first and foremost as “a civil rights warrior.” His focus turned to the civil rights movement in the late 1950s, and he became an outspoken activist who was a confidant of his friend, Martin Luther King Jr.  Belafonte was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1987. His humanitarian work led to him receiving an honorary Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, from the Academy in 2014. Belafonte remained a crusader for social justice until the end of his life, and in one of his final acts of charity, the singer celebrated his 94th birthday in March 2021 with a star-studded virtual party that raised money for ‘The Gathering for Justice’, a social justice organization he founded in 2005. Last year, Belafonte was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the ‘Early Influence’ category, becoming the oldest living person to join the organization.

Belafonte married his third wife, photographer Pamela Frank, in 2008, and is survived by children Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer, Shari Belafonte, David Belafonte and Gina Belafonte as well as two stepchildren Sarah Frank and Lindsey Frank. He also has eight grandchildren: Rachel Blue Biesemeyer, Brian Biesemeyer, Maria Belafonte McCray, Sarafina Belafonte, Amadeus Belafonte, Mateo Frank, Olive Scanga and Zoe Frank.

The Crookston Early Childhood Initiative has named Jeannie Lindgren as a Champion for Young Children for the positive impact she has had on young children and their families in our community for many years!

Jeannie provided child care to countless families for 50 years before retiring this fall.  One of her former families had this to say about Jeannie: “Caring, compassionate, trustworthy, and reliable are words that come to mind when I think of Jeannie. Prior to her retirement, Jeannie was our childcare provider for eight years. Every morning she would greet us with a smile, and we never had a doubt that our kids would be in wonderful hands while in her care. She treated our children like her own, and they enjoyed their days at Jeannie’s. Jeannie will always hold a special place in our family’s hearts.”

Thank you, Jeannie, for all you have done for children and families in our community, and enjoy your retirement!

The Crookston ECI is pleased to recognize these Champions for Young Children Awards to individuals, organizations, and businesses that help to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for our young children, ages birth through five.  If you would like to learn more about current projects of the Initiative or be involved, visit us on Facebook!

UNITED WAY OF CROOKSTON ANNOUNCES DISTRIBUTION OF ADDITIONAL FUNDS

united-way-school850782

The United Way of Crookston is happy to announce the distribution of additional funds to some of its partner agencies and programs.

“Having finished our 2023 allocations, the United Way of Crookston found we had more money to give than had been requested this year, so we were able to ask our grantees what they had on their wish lists. These are things outside of their regular budget that have been waiting for some funding,” said United Way of Crookston Executive Director Libby Boucher.

The United Way of Crookston was able to fund ice machine repair and a Wander Door alarm for the Benedictine Living Community/Villa St. Vincent. The Girl Scouts will be able to provide a robotics program, and Eat United will be providing bussing this summer. Tri Valley’s Energy Assistance will be able to purchase space heaters next winter, and Care and Share will be able to provide phones and data plans to help their residents get jobs, and housing and get in touch with their families. The school district can start a Ride Along/Play Along transportation program for kids in extracurricular programs.

“To be able to fill these wish list items was only possible due to the continued generosity of the Crookston community. We literally couldn’t do it with all the people who give year after year; big or small, every donation makes wonderful things possible. Thank you,” added Boucher.

WARROAD USES QUICK START TO BEAT PIRATE SOFTBALL 12-5

softball-10-421x4207163-1

The Warroad Warriors used a quick start to the game and stayed ahead the whole way in a 12-5 win over the Crookston Pirate Softball team on Tuesday afternoon at Donny Lauf Field in Crookston.

FIRST INNING
Warroad came out in the top of the first inning putting up four runs to take an early 4-0 lead. The first three hitters reached base via a single, RBI double, and walk. After a passed ball and an error on the throw back to the pitcher, the Warriors held a 3-0 lead. Pirates pitcher Dani Kresl would get the next two batters out, but a solo home run from Kate Johnson gave Warroad a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.

In the home half of the frame, Isabel Pahlen would leadoff with a single, but the next three Pirates would be retired by Warroad pitcher Tayanna Cole, giving the Warriors a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.

SECOND INNING
Kresl struck the first hitter out the next half inning before a single and a triple from Abby Chamernick brought another Warriors run home. A wild pitch would bring Chamernick home, and Kresl would finish the inning for Crookston with a couple of groundouts, sending the Pirates to bat trailing 6-0.

Crookston would answer back in the bottom of the second. Once again the Pirates leadoff hitter would reach base as Reese Swanson was safely aboard on an infield single. Warroad would then throw the ball away on a groundball, putting runners on first and third base with 0 outs. A wild pitch allowed Swanson to then race home scoring the first run of the game for the Pirates. Crookston would threaten a little farther with a walk from Rilynn Aubol, but Tayanna Cole would get the next three hitters out, sending the game into the third inning with the Warriors in front 6-1.

THIRD INNING
Warroad would get a leadoff single to start the third inning, and after a 1-out walk, a groundout to second base put runners on second and third with two outs. Warroad’s Maggie Butler would hit a short popup and Kambelle Freije was unable to race from shortstop to secure it, giving the Warriors another run. Dani Kresl would walk the next hitter but work out of a bases-loaded jam with a flyout to centerfield that Alex Luna would secure.

In the Pirates third inning Kresl would draw a leadoff walk, but two strikeouts and a groundout would quickly end the inning, giving Warroad a 7-1 lead after three full innings of play.

FOURTH INNING
A Crookston error put a runner on first base in the top of the fourth inning, but the Pirates would erase the mistake with a double play. Kresl would induce a flyball to Kambelle Freije at shortstop, who would haul in the catch, and double the runner of first base. A groundout would end the inning and give the Pirates some momentum heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Crookston would draw three walks in their half of the inning but failed to score leaving two runners on base after one of the walks was caught stealing. That would send the game into the fifth inning with Warroad holding a comfortable 7-1 lead.

FIFTH INNING
Warroad would extend their lead in the fifth inning. A leadoff Double followed by a groundout and a walk with a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out. The Warriors would hit a groundball that would be fielded by Kresl and thrown to first base, allowing a run to come home and score. Crookston then threw the ball away trying to get the runner moving from second to third base out, allowing that run to come in and score as well making it 9-1 Warroad. The Warriors would deliver two more hits but Kresl would get out of the inning and bring Crookston up to bat.

Crookston would get both runs back and have their best inning offensively in the fifth. Dani Kresl and Madi Bruggeman would draw back-to-back walks to begin the inning, and after a fielders choice, Reese Swanson would rope a 1-out double to right field scoring two runs. That cut the Warriors lead down to 9-3 but it would remain their heading into the sixth inning as Tayanna Cole would finish the inning with two straight outs as the Pirates stranded Swanson on second base.

SIXTH INNING –
It was an uneventful top of the sixth inning for Warroad as their leadoff hitter hit a double, but would be left on base. Dani Kresl would only face three more hitters the rest of the inning getting all three out and picking up two more strikeouts bringing her total to 4 in the game.

Alex Luna would start the bottom of the sixth with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Warroad would get Isabel Pahlen to ground one back to the pitcher, but the Warriors elected to try and get Luna out at third base and everyone ended up being safe putting runners on the corners with just one out. Crookston would steal Pahlen and she would get in a rundown sacrificing herself as an out but allowing Alex Luna to come home and score, bringing the score to 9-4 Warroad. A strikeout would end the inning and we would head into the final inning with the Warriors in front by five runs.

SEVENTH INNING
Warroad would add three more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a couple of Crookston errors to strengthen their lead. The Warriors would take a 12-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh needing just three outs to secure the win.

The Pirates would score one last run in the bottom of the seventh with two out hits from Reese Swanson (a double) and an RBI single from Shayla Azure. That would be it however, and the Warriors would snag the final out to win the game by a final score of 12-5.

Crookston drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Warroad improves to 2-2 with the win.
