MINAKWA GOLF COURSE TO OPEN ON FRIDAY, MAY 5

download-2180135

Minakwa Golf Course is open Friday, May 5 with the first tee time at 9:00 a.m.  Co-owner Brandon Carlson said there is one hole that is still a little wet, but the rest of the course is looking good.

“Brian and Zach have been working hard to get the course ready, and we will open Friday (May 5).  We are going to golf the first six holes. Eight is still really wet going down the hill to the pond, so we are going to jump from the sixth green to the nine tee box and play to the practice green and then use the extra hole, so technically, it will only be eight holes for a week or so until eight can dry up,” said Carlson.

The clubhouse and driving range have been open. “There was a lot of activity on the driving range the last week, especially on the nicer days,” said Carlson. “We have had a few people come into the bar the past few days.  We are still tinkering with the food, trying to figure out what we are going to do there.  The kitchen won’t open until Memorial Day, but we are getting to the point where we will have some finger food out of the fryer and maybe some pizzas too.”

Carlson said they will be updating everything on Facebook, so make sure to follow them for updates all season long.

Minakwa is now a member of the USGA, to allow members to use the GHIN handicap system. If you would like to register, let them know, and they will get you set up. The cost is $35 per member annually.

Julian Joseph Trudeau – Obit

julian-trudeau-e1683209431139366158

Julian Joseph Trudeau, age 84, of Mentor, MN, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Riverview Health in Crookston on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13th, at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Gentilly, MN with Monsignor David Baumgartner presiding. Military honors will be provided by the Vanderwaal-Lusty American Legion of Mentor and the National Guard Honors Team. Just a reminder that seating is limited so please bring a chair with you if you have one. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Carlin Funeral Home in Erskine, MN. Arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Erskine and messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com.

Julian was born on November 29, 1937, to Isaac and Margaret (Beaudry) Trudeau on the family farm near Gentilly. His growing-up years were spent on this farm which gave him many good memories that he would share with family and friends. He attended the rural school that was just up the road from his home and before his passing, he could still name all of the students he attended school with. As like his Dad, Isaac, Julian was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gentilly.

At the age of 19, Julian enlisted in the Army and trained at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. He spent two years in Germany with the 291st Field Artillery Battalion. He completed his military service on January 9, 1959, at Fort Sill in Oklahoma with the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

During his time in the military, he met Jo Ann Germany from Alto, Texas. They were married on November 8, 1958, in Lawton, Oklahoma. After completing his military service from the Army they settled in Minnesota to spend the next sixty-four years together. They raised a family of seven girls over that period of time. Mentor has been their home for the past fifty-three years.

Julian farmed for a period of time after his military service. He then started his own construction company in which he built and remodeled many homes in the area. The last 30-plus years he spent working for Paquin Potato Farms. He then retired due to health reasons.

He was a member of the Mentor American Legion Post #421 and the Crookston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1902.

Julian loved when family and friends came to visit. He enjoyed his cup of coffee while visiting around the kitchen table. Everyone who knew him understood he had a joke or two to tell and many stories to share. A conversation about farming was always a welcome subject. A good card game, a Yahtzee challenge, reading the newspaper, watching his Western movies and TV shows, putting together jigsaw puzzles and playing Solitaire on his iPad were enjoyable pastimes. He was knowledgeable about so many areas and could remember details with perfect recall.

Julian was a man with a good heart, a happy outlook on life, and a love for his family, especially his grandkids. His laugh will never be forgotten. He will be missed, but will always live on in our hearts.

Julian is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann; daughters, Tammie (Bill) Royal of Kerrville, TX, Melinda (Craig) Larson of Crookston, MN, Kim (Brian) Ringdahl of Crookston, MN, Julie (Tom) Wrobel, Alexandria, MN, Cindy (Paul) Gregg, Crookston, MN, Kathy (Larry) Parr, Crookston, MN, Denise (Rich) Niemela, Crookston, MN; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sibling, Allan Trudeau, Gentilly, MN; sisters-in-law, Dorene Trudeau, Gentilly, MN, Marlene Trudeau, Oakdale, MN, and Vernae Trudeau, Marietta, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

Julian was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Margaret; infant son, Richard; siblings, Cecilia, Doris, Alice, Jim, Willard, Laurence and John.

CARE AND SHARE GETS NEW PHONE SYSTEM AFTER MOUNT ST. BENEDICT FOUNDATION GRANT

20230421_1022023-scaled-e168315692929740111

The Mount Saint Benedict Foundation has awarded a grant to the Care and Share Center in Crookston to help purchase a new phone system.

The Sisters of Saint Benedict have been supportive of Care and Share in the past and made them aware of an opportunity for another grant request. Care and Share had an antiquated phone system that was dropping calls, unable to leave messages, the caller ID didn’t work and had a limited number of phones.

The Care and Share was awarded a grant of $12,980.00 to replace their phone system from Reliance Telephone and Security.  The new system has an auto attendant function that allows calls to be directed to the appropriate staff person, where messages can be left. “We have added extensions in the food shelf, soup kitchen, and donation room,” said Care and Share board member Tom Anderson. “Often staff needs to leave their workstation and the two portable phones allow them to do so and still be available to take calls. The system allows staff to be more efficient in providing more and better services.”

Care and Share shares a long history with the Sisters of Saint Benedict, going back to its founder, Sister Justina Violette.

Suspect arrested in shooting at Atlanta medical facility that left 1 dead and 4 injured

shutterstock_1753633301920538

A man suspected of shooting five women inside an Atlanta medical facility waiting room is in custody, the Atlanta Police Department confirmed. One woman was killed and four others were wounded by a gunman inside a downtown medical office building on Wednesday; the shooting occurred at 12:42 p.m. EDT inside a building on West Peachtree Street between 12th and 13th Streets.

The Atlanta Police Department announced the apprehension of Deion Patterson, 24, following a manhunt that lasted almost eight hours. Police say he was arrested near the Truist Park baseball stadium after stealing a pickup truck near the scene of the shooting. Patterson was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Officers said his family has been cooperating in the investigation.

Robert Jansen, Chief Medical Officer at Grady Memorial Hospital, told reporters that three of the four women injured in the shooting are considered “critically ill” and are in the intensive care unit. Two of the patients underwent surgery Wednesday, and a third victim underwent an interventional radiology procedure to repair vascular injuries. The fourth victim is in stable condition.

The Northside Hospital building, where the shooting took place, will be closed Thursday and all appointments canceled. The hospital, which houses a cancer center, a radiology unit and orthopedics, issued a statement after the shooting, saying “this tragedy is affecting all of us, and we ask for patience and prayers at this time.”

Federal Reserve raises interest rate by quarter point to 5.25%

shutterstock_1269958816100175

The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday a 10th interest rate hike on Wednesday, raising the rate to 5.25% — a 16-year high — as it continues its firefight against inflation. In a statement announcing the hike, it omitted previous language that signaled more hikes are likely.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell faces pressure from politicians to stop raising rates, as fears of a recession increase. The most recent data show personal income levels increased by 0.3% from February to reach $67.9 billion, but inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s target.

Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Sheldon Whitehouse and other lawmakers sent a letter to Powell saying that the Federal Reserve’s aggressive actions were threatening to throw millions of people out of work: “While the Fed should remain flexible to incoming data as it assesses the economy’s progress toward achieving lower inflation, the evidence to date suggests that progress can continue to be made without slamming the brakes on the economy and costing millions of Americans their jobs.” The lawmakers argued that Powell’s aggressive actions would end up hurting working families more than inflation has: “While we do not question the Fed’s policy independence, we believe that continuing to raise interest rates would be an abandonment of the Fed’s dual mandate to achieve both maximum employment and price stability and show little regard for the small businesses and working families that will get caught in the wreckage.”
