titan-2-420x420266194-1

Crookston High School Industrial Tech students had another opportunity to tour five local businesses last week.

The first stop of the day was Valley Plains Equipment. Valley Plains is a John Deere service and dealership location. Students heard from some employees about the John Deere tech program. They also got a chance to tour the shop spaces and the parts areas. One of the employees explained how a GPS system works in the newer tractors, and another employee went through setting up a row seeder. “I would like to thank Matt Kolstoe and his staff for letting us visit,” said Industrial Tech teacher Travis Oliver.

The second stop was DEE Manufacturing. Dee is an Aluminum Foundry and Machine shop. They create unique parts for all sorts of clients. These parts are used in all sorts of different equipment around the United States, and they even ship parts around the world. Dee is also growing and looking for additional workers to help with fulfilling the orders they have and new customers they are picking up. Students got a chance to tour both the foundry side, which included the sanding casting area, Aluminum casts, and part cleanup area. And the machine shop side, where they have a vast amount of equipment. “I want to thank Paul, Heather, Jeff, Scott, and the other tour guides for showing us this amazing place,” said Oliver.

The third stop of the day was Titan Machinery.  Titan is a Case IH, New Holland, and Case Construction service and dealership. “They gave us a tour of the parts area and shop area. We heard a presentation on the Titan Tech program as they are also looking for future service technicians,” said Oliver. “I would like to thank Mike Kolstoe and his staff for letting us visit.”

The fourth stop was lunch at Happy Joe’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor in Crookston.

The fifth stop was Eickhof Columbaria. Eickhof is another very unique manufacturer in Crookston. They specialize in building custom Columbaria’s for customers around the world. They have even placed some in Australia. “We received a tour of the manufacturing area and heard how the products are created. They employ about 30 and are also looking to grow,” said Oliver. “I want to thank Peter Tollefson and the staff for the tour of this unique place right here in Crookston.”

The sixth and final stop was Ziegler Cat. Ziegler is a Caterpillar, Massey Ferguson, and a few other services and dealership. “They gave us a tour of the parts area and shop area. We also heard about their need for additional technicians and the opportunities that they have for students,” said Oliver. “I would like to thank Kevin and Ziegler staff for letting us visit.”

Oliver hopes all of the students that participated in the tour learned something new and gained a bit more knowledge of the places in Crookston. “I hope they see all the opportunities in front of them and what every place has to offer,” said Oliver. “I encourage anyone that wants to learn more about each place and if there are other questions to please contact the business or myself, travisoliver@isd593.org.”

POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPROVE NEW CAMPGROUND ON CROSS LAKE

img_1577-e1683061597213821047

The Polk County Commissioners met on Tuesday morning at the Polk County Government Center in Crookston.

BIDS FOR JUSTICE CENTER
The first agenda items were bids for the entire roof replacement at the Justice Center and bids for the boiler replacement at the Justice Center.

The low bid for the roof replacement came from CL Linfoot of Grand Forks at $721,500, and the low bid for the boiler replacement came from PSM of Bemidji at $353,000.  The commissioners approved both bids.

VIKING GAS TRANSMISSION COMPANY PERMIT
The commissioners approved a conditional use permit for Viking Gas Transmission Company for a transmission compressor building.  “They are looking at doing a large-scale project in Polk County this year running parallel to an existing line going from south of the Angus compressor station to north of East Grand Forks for an unaffiliated customer over in North Dakota,” said Jake Snyder Polk County Planning and Zoning Administrator. “They need a new compressor building, which we did a conditional use permit today with several conditions about construction of the new compressor building which is needed to push the gas through the lines.”

The new line will be parallel to the current line, so there should be little effect on the surrounding land along the line, but the project needs Federal permitting. “It is crossing some waterways, ditches, and other things in Polk County, and that project requires a Federal permitting process, so landowners within a half-mile of the project should get notices, and they will have to go through an extensive review process,” said Snyder. “There shouldn’t be any tree removal or anything because there isn’t any vegetation running along the line.”

24-UNIT CAMPGROUND PROPOSAL ON CROSS LAKE
Curtis Olson came before the board to get approval for the construction of a 24-unit campground on Cross Lake, north of Fosston.  The 24 units would include septic, water, and electric hook-up.  The board approved the construction of the campground after a lengthy discussion and many questions.

Polk County currently operates a 34-unit campground on Cross Lake called Tilberg Park.  “Tilberg Park has been a very successful campground.  It is more of a remote area on a small lake in Polk County, and people love going out there.  It is a small water body, more waterfowl, Loons, and things, and there is a public access on the site, and that led to a lengthy discussion on boat activity on a lake of that size,” said Snyder. “We put several conditions to address this based on public comments and public safety issues with watercraft of high speed on a small lake like that.”

Snyder added that public feedback is important for the county to help gain an edge in the permitting process. “Without their knowledge of the area and the locality, that is how we determine that property values won’t diminish,” said Snyder. “These people like it out there because it is a solitary place, and we know campgrounds have their issues, but I would like people to go visit Tilberg Park and see how it is a setting in the woods, and the lake happens to be nearby.  We need to extensively protect our smaller lakes, and really, it becomes a balancing act, and it is important to get the public feedback.”

HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
The commissioners approved the quote and ordering of a loader for the Highway Department.  Titan Machinery of Crookston was the lowest bid at $201,950, and after a credit of $63,570 for a trade-in, the cost would be $138,380.

The bids for FEMA flood repair work on County Ditches 103 and 126 were opened on April 28 with three bidders.  The lowest bid was by Gladen Construction of Laporte at $266,556.90, which was over $131,000 lower than the next bid.

The county received four bids on repairing damage from 2022 flooding on County State Aid Highway 61, located three miles west of Highway 75.  The lowest responsible quote was from Higher Ground – Paul Zavoral at $19,885.35.

“From last year’s flooding in April of 2022, we have been working with FEMA, and we had one road issue that we haven’t repaired yet on County State Aid Highway 61 as a center-line culvert had washed out, and we got quotes on that to get work done before August 1, and we will get full reimbursement for that from FEMA,” said Polk County Highway Engineer Rich Sanders. “We had issues with County Ditch 103 and 126, and Gladen Construction will work on that.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy vows support of Israel in speech to legislative body Knesset

shutterstock_2274408301357517

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy delivered remarks before the Israeli Knesset, the national legislature of Israel. McCarthy led a bipartisan congressional delegation, consisting of 20 lawmakers, to the country to celebrate its 75th anniversary of independence. The trip is McCarthy’s first foreign trip as House speaker and marks the second time a sitting speaker traveled to Israel since Newt Gingrich did so in 1998.

Receiving a standing ovation for his remarks, McCarthy reinforced U.S.-Israeli relations and announced the formation of a House-Knesset parliamentary friendship group. He said the newly formed friendship group will allow the House to engage more directly with the Israeli Parliament, travel to Israel to strengthen existing relationships and host Knesset members traveling to the U.S: “This will be part of a new chapter of U.S.-Israel relations … If we remain united, then the forces of freedom and democracy will always prevail … This is the foundation of our special relationship.”

McCarthy emphasized Israel’s efforts to achieve independence in his speech to the parliament, calling the nation’s rebirth “nothing less than a modern miracle,” and said that the United States and Israel are the only two countries “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all our equal.” Said McCarthy: “My greatest hope is that our special relationship can serve as a foundation for greater peace across the Middle East. The progress towards peace in the past few years have simply been remarkable.”

The House Speaker said the Iranian regime is the main threat to peace in the Middle East: “Most of the turmoil in this region, the violence and instability, can be traced back to that source,” and added that as long as he is House Speaker, the United States will continue to fully fund security assistance for Israel and ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon: “We cannot allow the Iranian regime’s evil campaign to succeed.”

Judge denies Trump’s mistrial motion in E. Jean Carroll case

shutterstock_2231108363557947

On Monday, a federal judge in New York denied former President Donald Trump’s bid for a mistrial in writer E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit alleging that Trump raped her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s.

Trump’s lawyer Joe Tacopina filed an 18-page motion hours ahead of his second day of cross-examining Carroll, which accused U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan of making “pervasive unfair and prejudicial rulings” against his client. Tacopina requested that Kaplan “correct the record for each and every instance in which the Court has mischaracterized the facts of this case to the jury” and allow Trump’s counsel to “have greater latitude” to cross-examine Carroll.  The motion added that Kaplan’s “one-sided rulings” demonstrate “a deeper leaning towards one party over another,” including comments that express “favoritism.”  It also stated: “Here, despite the fact trial testimony has been underway for only two days, the proceedings are already replete with numerous examples of Defendant’s unfair treatment by the Court, most of which have been witnessed by the Jury.”  Kaplan, however, denied the motion shortly before the jury was brought in to hear Carroll’s testimony on Monday.

Last week, Carroll took the witness stand for her lawsuit against Trump and told jurors: “I’m here because Trump raped me.” Carroll alleges Trump assaulted her in 1995 or 1996 at a Bergdorf Goodman department store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. In her testimony at the civil trial in federal court in lower Manhattan last week, Carroll said Trump “lied and shattered my reputation, and I’m trying to get my life back” after she came forward with her allegations in 2019.

Trump has repeatedly denied Carroll’s allegations during the trial.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie becomes first film of 2023 to gross $1 billion

shutterstock_2287966063181635

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has become the first film released in 2023 to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The film is now just the fifth movie (and first animated film) since before the COVID-19 pandemic to gross $1 billion worldwide. It is among the most successful animated films in history and only the third ‘non-Disney’ release to gross $1 billion (the others being 2015’s Minions and 2017’s Despicable Me 3).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie also had the biggest global debut for an animated film of all time, surpassing Frozen II. It’s easily the highest-grossing film ever based on a video game and the first video game movie to gross $1 billion.
