“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”,  the multiverse spinning animated ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff, opened in North American theaters over the weekend with earnings of over $120.5 million – triple the amount of the debut of the original film Oscar-winner from 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (that film opened with $35.4 million, and earned $384.3 million worldwide) .

‘Across the Spider-Verse’ surpassed expectations and earned great reviews, and become the second largest domestic opening of 2023, trailing only “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”  Across the Spider-Verse, directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, topped “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which debuted with $118 million.

In the film, the teenage webslinger from Brooklyn, Miles Morales ( Shameik Moore ), swings into another adventure – this time across multiple worlds.  Written and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is Part 2 in a trilogy that will conclude with a third chapter to be released next year, dubbed Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

CROOKSTON WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE DECIDES TO DELAY MOST STREET PROJECTS TO 2024

waysandmeans2-1992161

The Crookston Ways and Means Committee had a special meeting on Monday evening to discuss the 2023 Street Improvement projects, and they decided to scrap all the projects except two because the one quote they received was over 40 percent of what they had estimated.

The City only received one bid for the six projects that were estimated to cost $2,061,263, and the bid from RJ Zavoral and Sons Inc. was for $2,796,705. With the difference between the estimate and the quote, City Engineer Rich Clauson and Public Works Director Brandon Carlson suggested the city only go forward with the two projects and package the rest into 2024s projects.

Public Works Director Brandon Carlson said there were several reasons why they only had one bid on the projects. “Rich reached out to a couple of them that we were expecting to bid, and one didnt have a crew to put the underground in, and the other one had a hard time fitting it in their schedule,” said Carlson. “Part of the changes we made tonight was to extend the deadline so it will give them a little more time into the fall so we can hopefully get a couple more bids, and we have reduced the project size.”

The Ways and Means committee agreed that they should move forward with rebidding the Alexander Street project from 4th Avenue North to 425 feet north and only replace the watermain on Houston Avenue from Hunter Street to South Ash Street in 2023.

“We were going to do Houston Avenues watermain and the street, and we were going to do some gravel roads on the south end of town and upgrade them to curb and blacktop streets, and we dropped those to make the project a little smaller,” said Carlson. “We will have the watermain put in on Houston this year so that the following year the streets can be done, and we will have a larger street improvement project in 2024 to get a more reasonable bid out of the contractors. We are moving forward, doing what we can, and trying to get the best bids we can. I didnt feel it would be responsible for accepting a bid where they came in and if the projects have to wait until next year.”

The rest of the projects (listed below) will be pushed back to 2024.
Houston Avenue reconstruction (Hunter Street to South Ash Street)
Euclid Avenue Reconstruction (Guthrie Street to McKinley Blvd.)
Guthrie Street Reconstruction (Euclid Avenue to 5th Avenue South)
Guthrie Street Reconstruction (5th Avenue South to the DAC garage approach)
Elm Street Alley between Summit and Central (Alley on West side of Elm Street)

CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL OKAYS MINOR REPAIRS TO RE-OPEN POOL AND STRUCTURAL STUDY

download-1472569

The Crookston City Council held a special meeting to discuss the Crookston Community Pool repairs and structural evaluation payments.

Crookston resident of almost 40 years, Bob Blazek, voiced his opinion that the City should save money and close the pool. I have seen a lot of money dumped into the swimming pool, I call it the hole because money keeps going in, and there is no profit, said Blazek. Its a big expense to the City, to the taxpayers, and I dont agree with more money being spent on it. A couple of months ago, it came out that it could cost $1 million to fix the problems they got. Now they want to dump another $50,000 into having an HVAC/Structural engineer or somebody else come in and look at everything to tell them the building is shot. In my mind, I would like to see them close it and be done with it. We dont need more expense to the city when they are struggling the way it is. Property taxes keep going up, and were not getting a whole lot more benefit out of it, in my mind.

The council had a short discussion before voting unanimously to spend $54,000 for the pool heat actuators (two), with installation at $40,000. The estimated HVAC/Plumbing Engineer evaluation will be $7,500. And the structural engineer evaluation will cost $6,500.

To pay for the unbudgeted expense, they are taking money from the following accounts-
Timberwolves trip – $200
Reserve Beverage contract – $5,000
Reserve Take a Kid Fishing – $285
Reserve Club Kid – $854.91
Reserve Bark for the Park – $3,266.56
Reserve Franklin School Park – $500
Reserve Maplewood Park – $1,465
Reserve Gymnastics – $658.45
Reserve Baseball Field Improvement – $5,000
Fund Balance unreserved – $36,770.08

Crookston City Administrator Corky Reynolds said they will move forward with the repairs to open the pool and find out what kind of condition the building is in. The council said yes, go ahead and get the actuators in there so we can open the doors. But, more importantly, they affirmed going out and getting a structural engineer to do more in-depth testing and also an HVAC and piping engineer to do more testing on the areas we know are in need of testing and potential replacement.

The council wants to get the pool open and decide on the pool’s future after getting more info about the structural and HVAC/piping reports. We want the testing to occur in the environment that is now. So we can look at the chemicals, so we can look at the vapors, so we can look at how it works right now and then get the experts to say if you want it to be better, here is what you have to do and we can evaluate the cost, and the council will have all the data to make the ultimate decision.
