SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

We received sad news at the end of last week and unfortunate confirmation early this week about the top Crookston High School female athlete, Halle Winjum, tearing her ACL while at the University of North Dakota prospects camp. UND is interested in Winjum playing for them, so it was a great opportunity for Halle.

While we are sad for the Girl’s Tennis team losing their #1 singles player and the Girl’s Basketball team losing one of the top players in the state, the biggest thing we are sad about is that Halle is one of the nicest, sweetest, hard-working, competitive kids you will ever meet. She is an all-American kid. She is a great student, active in church, active in the community, and always doing nice things for people. No surprise, a kid of a Winjum/Olson combo is a great kid. Halle also would be one of the favorites to advance to the State Track meet next year in the Pole Vault.

I am heartbroken for Halle, but I know God doesn’t give us anything we can’t handle and I know she will have a speedy recovery and still have a chance to play college basketball. Unfortunately, torn ACLs in female college basketball players are common, so the school that is lucky enough to land Halle will be getting a good one.

We will be praying for Halle and a speedy recovery.

Finally, the Minnesota State High School League and the football district scheduling listened to my complaints, and they have Crookston playing all section games except the rivalry game with East Grand Forks! Hallelujah!

Crookstons schedule looks like this, but it could change depending on if Frazee can host games this year or not. I will talk more about this after the schedule.

Thursday, August 31 host East Grand Forks 6 PM
Friday, September 8 host Park Rapids 6 PM
Friday, September 15 at Frazee 7 PM
Friday, September 22 at Pelican Rapids 6 PM
Friday, September 29 host Roseau 6 PM
Friday, October 6 host Warroad 6 PM (Homecoming)
Friday, October 13 at Barnesville 6 PM
Wednesday, October 18 at Hawley

There could be a change to the schedule if Frazee cant host a game this year and they have to come to Crookston. The Pirates would host Frazee in week 3, and on week 1 Crookston would then travel to EGF instead of hosting them. We will know more later this summer.

I am excited about having Park Rapids and Roseau back in the section, and that is part of the reason why the schedule is PERFECT!

I wrote this part Tuesday night and have my son’s baseball game Wednesday night so I didn’t update it.

The NHL Draft is this week in Nashville, Tennessee, and once again, several Minnesotans should have their name called, including two from NW Minnesota.

Two Section 8A players have a shot at being drafted.

Warroads Jayson Shaugabay is currently ranked anywhere from 58th overall to 88th. There is a good possibility he could go in the second or third round.

Another Warroad product, Hampton Slukynsky is ranked as the 16th American goaltender by Central Scouting.

Here are some other Minnesotans that should be drafted on Thursday-

Oliver Moore of Mounds View-played for the USA National Team Development Program and will play for the Gophers next year. He is expected to go in the top 10. If he is picked in the top 10, he would be the 10th-ever Minnesotan to be picked in the top 10.
He was picked 19th by Chicago.

Danny Nelson of Maple Grove-played for the USA National Team Development Program last year. He is ranked 22nd.

Charlie Stramel of St. Paul-played at the University of Wisconsin last year. He is ranked 30. Picked 21st by the Wild.

William Whitelaw-played at Shattuck St. Marys in 2021-22 before playing for Youngstown in the USHL last year. He is ranked 42.

Tanner Ludtke of Lakeville-played at Lakeville South in high school and has played in the USHL. He is ranked 50.

Beckett Hendrickson of Minnetonka-played USA National Team Development Program. Ranked 67.

Jake Fisher of Woodbury-played at Cretin-Derham Hall. He is ranked 87.

Austin Burnevik of Ham Lake. Played at Totino Grace before joining USA National Team Development Program. Ranked 92.

Luke Mittelstadt of Eden Prairie. Played for the Gophers last season and is ranked 97.

The big talk in high school sports this past week has been the dumpster fire that is Orono Girls Hockey. For those that aren’t familiar with the story, I will give you a cliff notes version.

Larry Olimb (Warroad High School and U of M hockey player) resigned after he led Orono to a 24-4-4 on the year and lost to Warroad in the Class A State Championship. Olimb said about five parents caused issues, and one of the parents even told Olimb “You just dont have it. Sorry for the harsh words, but it needed to be said. I hope you can walk away from this and learn from it.”

Olimb met with two parents, and a list of things that they had problems with are below-
He was not vocal or encouraging enough with players during games.
He did not promote his players, specifically their daughter, to college coaches enough.
He did not do enough to promote his players for all-conference and all-state honors.
He had not named their daughter a captain for the 2023-24 season at the year-end banquet.

As you can tell, it is all about their kids and not really about the team at all after the team finished the season on a 15-1-2 run after starting the season 9-3-2.

It is a little ironic that the team Orono lost to in the Championship was Warroad who had a player rip the coach, complain about program culture, and she also made claims of recruiting.

Both girl’s hockey programs are heavy on players moving in (the decades-old debate if it is legit or not comes into play for both. You can blame the MSHSL, who does nothing about it, and the legislature that allowed open enrollment for schools in the state, but most importantly, blame the small percentage of whacked-out parents that have NO CLUE that ruins it for everybody.)

Orono has had former Minnesota Wild player Mark Parrish coach for three years and Larry Olimb coach for one year, and both were run out. Good luck to Orono finding a quality coach after this has gone public.

Is it just hockey? Of course not, because it has happened in all sports. In Minnesota, we see it more often in hockey because hockey parents are nuts. ALL JOKING AND AN ATTEMPT TO FIRE UP MY BROTHER ASIDE, hockey is big in Minnesota. Just look at the State Class AA Boys Hockey attendance and how many Division 1 hockey programs we have in the state.
But why else do we see it in Minnesota more often?
A lot of money is put into hockey across the state.
You have a lot of former college and pro hockey players coaching in Minnesota, and when they get run out, that is big news.

It is great to see former UMC Football and Baseball coach and all-around great guy, Steve Olson, has been hired at his alma mater Valley City State. The press release from Valley City State is below-

The Valley City State University athletic department announced today that Steve Olson has been hired as Director for Athletic Development and Game Management.

A 1988 VCSU graduate, Olson will be responsible for the development and implementation of fundraising programs and revenue opportunities to support VCSU’s athletic programs. He will also oversee the management and coordination of game day operations and promotional activities at athletic events.

The hiring of Olson solidifies VCSU’s new leadership structure in athletics. After one year leading the department as interim, McCulloch has been named full-time athletic director and head football coach by VCSU president Alan LaFave. Assistant athletic director Anna Bratsch has been promoted to Associate Athletic Director. She will also continue to lead the athletic training staff as the Director for Sports Medicine.

With McCulloch remaining on as dual athletic director and football coach, the department was able to hire Olson to help lead athletic fundraising and game management.

Olson brings a wealth of experience to his new position with more than 30 years working in college athletics. He most recently worked 12 seasons as a football coach at Michigan Tech University, including six seasons as head coach from 2017-2022. Prior to that he was a baseball and football coach at University of Minnesota-Crookston and Jamestown College.Olson has also held roles on college campuses as an admissions officer, sports information director and instructor.

Olson graduated from VCSU in 1988 with a degree in biology education and physical education. He was inducted into the VCSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, receiving the honor for his career as a standout Viking baseball player. He earned Honorable Mention All-American during his senior season when he helped the 1987 baseball team to the district championship.

A college physics professor was explaining a particularly complicated concept to his class when a pre-med student interrupted him.

Why do we have to learn this stuff? The young man blurted out.

To save lives, the professor responded before continuing the lecture.

A few minutes later the student spoke up again. So how does physics save lives?

The professor stared at the student for a long time. Physics saves lives, he said, because it keeps the idiots out of medical school.

John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen welcome baby No. 4 via surrogate

shutterstock_788482900241533

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have welcomed baby No. 4 via surrogate. Teigen and Legend welcomed their third child, a daughter named Esti, in January. The couple also share daughter Luna, 7, and son Miles, 5.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Teigen revealed that she and Legend recently welcomed their fourth child together via surrogate on June 19, a baby boy named Wren Alexander Stephens. Teigen shared photos of Wren nuzzling against her chest and a photo with her surrogate, Alexandra, explaining that she has wanted to be a mom of four ever since she was a child: “For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted four children. As a little girl, 2 glow worms and 2 cabbage patch dolls were perpetually in my arms, helping me stir in my kitchen, watching ‘Alf’ with me. We’d sleep together nightly, each getting the same amount of kisses as to not make the others jealous. My mom always searched for the Pound Puppy with 4 pups in her pouch, having no qualms about opening and peeking inside before purchasing.”

Teigen also noted the loss she and Legend suffered in 2020 when they were expecting another son: “After losing Jack, I didn’t think I’d be able to carry any more babies on my own. To be honest, I’ve personally blocked out a lot of my mindset during that time, but one clear memory is being surrounded by people who wanted to make sure I wouldn’t go through that pain and loss again.”

Finally, Teigen went on to thank the couple’s surrogate, Alexandra: “We want to say thank you for this incredible gift you have given us, Alexandra. And we are so happy to tell the world he is here, with a name forever connected to you, Wren Alexander Stephens. Our hearts, and our home, are officially full. And to our Jack, we know both their angel kisses are from you.”

HBO’s ‘The Idol’ ending one week earlier than planned

shutterstock_1192062613732143

HBO’s controversial series ‘The Idol’, starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, is coming to an end sooner than planned. The fifth episode of the series, co-created by The Weekend (Abel Tesfaye), Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim, will be the last of the season, concluding this Sunday (July 2).  TV Line shared that the series no longer needed six episodes after Levinson joined the team and the story changed drastically: “the season ended up being five episodes when it was all said and done after Sam [Levinson] took over and made significant changes. The story only ended up requiring 5.” Tesfaye also tweeted the news, writing that the show has “one more episode”.

The Idol follows a Los Angeles club owner and cult leader, Tedros (The Weeknd), who enters a complicated relationship with a rising pop star, Jocelyn (Depp). The cast also includes Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan, and Rachel Sennott, with Elizabeth Berkley, Melanie Liburd and the late Anne Heche in recurring roles.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd has continued to share music from the series, recently dropping three more songs as episode four of the series dropped. “One of the Girls” features BLACKPINK’s Jennie & Lily-Rose Depp, while “Fill the Void” is from Lily-Rose Depp & Ramsey, and the third song is the solo track “Jealous Guy”. Mike Dean serves as producer on all three tracks.

Take a listen to ‘One of the Girls’ (here); ‘Fill the Void’ (here); and ‘Jealous Guy’ (here).

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE OFFERS BOAT AND WATER SAFETY TIPS

With many folks on the water this Fourth of July holiday, the Polk County Sheriff’s Department and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will monitor the area’s lakes to ensure everybody has a safe and legal holiday.

BOAT AND WATER SAFETY PROGRAM
The Polk County Sheriff’s Department Water and Safety crew is participating in the boat and water safety program. This program is primarily funded by a grant from the state of Minnesota to provide public safety. Each department participating in this program collects and interprets data on water incidents and boating in general. This grant also provides training for adults who may require training before operating boats in other states.
“Our personnel will be out there on boats and our personal watercraft patrolling the water waves of Polk County,” said Polk CountyBoat and Water Supervisor Tom Hibma. “We’ll be looking for intoxicated boaters, careless, reckless drivers, speed, and wick violations, and also the violations of watercraft too.”

WHERE YOU MIGHT SEE WATER PATROLS
The weekends typically bring the highest traffic possibilities to the waters. Polk County prides itself on always having a patrol officer on duty to respond to calls and complaints. “We go all the way from the Red River, we’ve done patrol on the Red Lake River, but primarily we are on the lakes area,” said Hibma. “We’re in Polk County on Maple Lake, Union Lake, and once in a while, we’ll hit smaller lakes around the area.”

BOAT INSPECTIONS
The DNR has an Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist at the public landings who will inspect boats. The purpose of the inspections is to make sure individuals are taking the proper precautions in and out of the water. A washing station is available for boaters; use that to ensure your boat is free of any invasive species, such as weeds and zebra mussels.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT
With the Fourth of July weekend being a highly capacitated holiday on the lakes, Crookston Police wanted to send a message to those who plan on being on the water. “Don’t drink and drive because it’s no different than the road when you’re on a boat,” said Hibma. “Some of the rules are a little different in terms of open containers. However, we don’t promote that, 30 percent of boat-related fatalities in Minnesota, alcohol is a factor.”

The other issue to address is boat operations ages. If you are 12-17 years of age, a permit is required to operate a boat. Anyone that is under the age of 13 cannot use a personal water-crafted Jet Ski. If the operator is 13 and older, it is required to have an individual 21 years of age or older with direct supervision overlooking them. If the operator is aged 14-17, they must have a watercraft permit. Wake Boats have been another problem in the past. “make sure to pay attention to your wake boat because it can cause damage to other boats that are docked and to shorelines,” said Hibma. “Own your wake; pay attention to where that’s going while operating on our waters.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Department primarily patrols the waters yearly from May to September, depending on weather conditions. During winter, the department patrols with snowmobiles and ATVs to perform operations.
