At least three people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting late Monday in Fort Worth, Texas. The Fort Worth Police Department said its officers were dispatched to Horne Street on the west side of the city in response to a report of a shooting; upon arrival, the officers found “multiple” gunshot victims in a parking lots

Police have identified a total of 11 victims — 10 adults and one child. Three of them have died while eight others remain hospitalized in unknown conditions. The shooting happened in the city’s Como neighborhood in Fort Worth, with police saying that the shooting occurred hours after the end of the neighborhood’s annual July 4th ComoFest.  The neighborhood is described as a small, predominantly Black community with a high level of crime, including rival gangs in the area. Sources would not say if they believe the shooting was gang related but said the incident began as an argument and escalated quickly. Several of the victims will not cooperate with authorities, and they are asking the public tocome forward with more details about what happened that night.

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker posted on social media: “I am devastated by the news of a mass shooting in Fort Worth last night. My heart breaks for the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Como community that works to build positivity and celebration in their community and our city.”  Mayor Parker said those with information about the incident, or if they have personal videos from the shooting or events leading up to the shootings, are urged to contact the Fort Worth Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 817-392-4330, or the Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at 817-469-8477.

5 men killed, 2 children injured in Philadelphia mass shooting

shutterstock_161617704186442

At least five people were killed and two minor children were injured by gunfire in a Philadelphia neighborhood, when a man wearing body armor opened fire on Monday.  Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle M. Outlaw told reporters during a press conference that the crime scene encompasses a two-by-four-block area, and at least 50 shots were fired in the incident, with multiple vehicles struck.

Outlaw said the suspect, described as a Black man in his 40s, was taken into custody after being cornered by police in an alley. He was wearing a bulletproof vest that contained multiple magazines and was armed with an AR-style rifle, a handgun and a scanner. A motive was under investigation. As the suspect was firing his weapon, a second person “acquired a gun somehow” and returned fire, Outlaw said, adding they don’t know this person’s connection to the shooter. That second person was also taken into custody.

All six gunshot victims were either on the street or in vehicles when they were struck, Outlaw said, again adding that “at this point we don’t see a connection to any of the victims and the shooter.” Police identified the deceased victims Tuesday as Lashyd Merritt, 20; Dymir Stanton, 29; Ralph Moralis, 59; Daujan Brown, 15; and Joseph Wamah, Jr., 31. They had all been shot multiple times. The injured parties were both boys aged 2 years old and 13 years old, who were stable at a hospital.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted: “Horrified by the reports of a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia. My heart is with the loved ones and families of everyone involved, and I send my prayers to the victims.”

See the teaser trailer for ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’

shutterstock_2211651199111545

Norman Reedus is ready to return as Daryl Dixon, as seen in a teaser-trailer for his new series The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, set to debut this fall on AMC and AMC+.

The network said in a synopsis: “Daryl washes ashore in France and struggles to piece together how he got there and why. The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home. As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan.” The first-look footage showed Daryl speaking into a tape recorder, identifying himself and cryptically saying he is searching for something and ‘won’t give up until he finds it or dies trying,’ as he is seen trekking alone through the French countryside.

Reedus played Daryl for 11 seasons of The Walking Dead from 2010 to 2022. The spin-off series will include Clémence Poésy, Adam Nagaitis, Anne Charrier, Eriq Ebouaney, Laika Blanc Francard, Romain Levi and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi.

Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds part of investment group taking stake in Alpine Formula 1 team

shutterstock_2227822455523977

Actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are joining an investment group taking a significant stake into Formula 1 team Alpine Racing. The move comes just months after McElhenney and Reynolds’s success as owners of Welsh soccer club Wrexham.

Parent company Renault announced in a press release that Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partner and Maximum Effort Investments – which includes Reynolds, McElhenney and Michael B. Jordan – are getting a 24% equity stake, a deal worth approximately $218 million. Renault said the investment will “accelerate Alpine’s growth plans and sporting ambitions in F1,” and touted the investor group’s “collective expertise and track record in the sports industry” in its previous relationships with the Dallas Cowboys, the Fenway Group and Wrexham. Alpine is now valued around $900 million after the investment. The team currently ranks fifth in the Formula 1 constructor standings.

Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, said in a statement that the “association is an important step to enhance our performance at all levels — first, Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort Investments, as international players with strong track record in the sports industry, will bring their recognized expertise to boost our media and marketing strategy, essential to support our sporting performance over the long term; second, the incremental revenue generated will in turn be reinvested in the team, in order to further accelerate our Mountain Climber plan, aimed at catching up with top teams in terms of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.”

CITY OF CROOKSTON TO ADD NEW SEATING AT JIM KARN FIELD

karn-sheet-1-e1687800645585-150x83204635-1

The City of Crookston will be adding new seating behind home plate at Jim Karn Field. The project is valued at $180,000, which will be paid for by the Crookston Baseball Association.

There will be 238 seats added, with 133 of them stadium seating.“The seats immediately in front of the press box will be removed, and stadium seating will be implemented,” said City Administrator Corky Reynolds.“What stadium seating means there will be a fold-up base where you would sit, with a backside attached. This is much like a professional stadium.” The stadium seats will also have cupholders.

BREAKDOWN OF SEATING
The total number of seats that are being added is 238. Of those 238 seats, 133 of them are considered stadium seating. Four wheelchair spaces are handicapped accessible, along with 100 bench seats designed as bleacher seating. “If you think about Karn field, right in front of the press box is where the 133 stadium seats will go, and they will be right against the backstop,” said Reynolds. “Everybody seated will be able to see the entire field.” Seating offset to each side of the stadium seating will have bench seating with backs attached.

The Southern Bleacher Company is set to start this project in late November or early December, and the expected completion time would be before Crookston High School takes the field next spring in early April.

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
The city believes this upgrade will benefit all the Crookston baseball teams. With stadium seating being added, this can make attending a game much more enjoyable. “This will make it much more comfortable and conducive to a delightful experience,” said Reynolds. “These seats will give a better view of the field.” Crookston Baseball Association is hopeful that this will give Crookston a leg up as far as premier fields in the area, where they can host more section, legion, and Babe Ruth League tournaments.

CROOKSTON CARE AND SHARE PARTNERS WITH CHURCHES FOR ADOPT A ROOM PROJECT

care-and-share-logo514945

The Hope Center has six units, 3 of them are one room, and 3 of them are two rooms. The rooms are not large but sufficient to provide a temporary place to stay. But while sufficiency is excellent, the rooms seemed institutional and unattractive.

Enter the Adopt-a-Room project. Six area churches have embraced the Hope Center, each adopting a room.

-Room 2A, Trinity Lutheran Church

-Room 2B, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church

-Room 3, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

-Room 4, Nexus Church, Thief River Falls

-Room 5, Harvest Church

-Room 6, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church

The idea is to make things a little more homelike for resident families. Not every room will look alike, so it isn’t so institutional. It also shows residents that the Crookston region is caring. The committed church volunteers that took on this project faced some challenges. Everyone had to address the flooring. Everyone had painting to do. This was in addition to the separate little things each room needed to be done.

In addition to time and effort, supplies were needed. The different church families came together to support the project with donations of supplies. When it came to the painting, Sister Justina must have meddled in this project a little bit because, right on time, Jason Klinnert, manager of Hardware Hank in Crookston, called with an offer to donate paint. Hardware Hank of Crookston donated many gallons of paint and even tinted it at no cost.

There comes a point where the hard work is done, and then the fun stuff starts. The churches get to decorate the room and provide bedding and towels that look nice together. They also create a welcome basket for the incoming family. One of the most fun parts for the churches is knowing that what they have provided is available for the families to take with them when they move into their homes. This boosts families when they gather necessities needed in a new place. It also gives them something enjoyable to decorate with when encouraged to take dcor they have particularly liked.

Leah Winjum from Trinity Lutheran Church is the communications coordinator volunteer. She was kept busy as the project started because we had to let the churches know when there was the time and opportunity to get their room done in between the rooms being used. Her job should get more manageable now that almost all the rooms are complete. From now on, when a family leaves a room, the church that adopted that room will be notified so they can come and refresh the room. Families in the rooms don’t know the volunteers who worked in their rooms. Volunteers don’t get to meet the families they are providing for. But that’s okay. The result is a mutual sense of caring and gratitude between people who will never meet, a miraculous happening. Thank you, churches, for making the Hope Center and our world better!
