CHEDA MEETING RECAP- POSSIBLE FUTURE RENOVATIONS TO WASHINGTON SCHOOL

chedalogo104675

The Crookston Housing and Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) met on Tuesday at Valley Technology Park.

CHEDA first discussed the Workforce housing development that is currently being built at 1410 Eickhof Boulevard; the board was informed the Crookston EDA’s focus is picking up cabinets, flooring, and paint for the design. This has been an ongoing internal project for the Crookston EDA, executive director of the EDA Karie Kirschbaum gave her comments, “This is a project we’ve had internally. So, we buy a house then sell it,” said Kirschbaum, “then we build another house with that money from the previous sale. So, we can keep the housing stock in Crookston.” With the current state of the housing market, Kirschbaum stated the EDA might go away from that project and invest that money next year into current rentals to keep those establishments intact.

The Crookston EDA also gave updates on the Industrial Park and a tour of the AIC campus. Kirschbaum explains, “We were joined by the Department of economic development, the Northwest Redevelopment Commission,” said Kirschbaum, “We will be applying for a grant that we are available now for through the USEDA because we were declared a disaster due to the flooding in 2021.” This grant will be used to put infrastructure in Industrial Park in hopes of developing the area.

Washington School has recently had analysis and maintenance done to it, and the Crookston EDA is looking to convert the north wing of the campus into a childcare center. Kirschbaum explains, “We know childcare is a driving force in the community right now. To be in our community, people need childcare,” said Kirschbaum, “if CHEDA were to make an offer, we know in our minds the north wing would eventually be a childcare center.” The board explained how the commercial kitchen in Washington can be a valuable resource when thinking about food incubators. Other renovations discussed in that project include adding doors and exits for fire safety regulations.

Other renovations to Washington School discussed by the board were building a community resource center/heritage center on the grounds of the property and twin homes specifically for seniors. Kirschbaum explains the benefits of these renovations, “building twin homes, especially for our seniors with no steps, where they can downsize and have a nice home,” said Kirschbaum, “that will also open up their home for larger families or their families. These homes could be situated on the east side of the property. Now we would have seniors and children and all the multi-generational situations happening on that property.”

CHEDA has applied for a small city redevelopment grant worth $1.4 million. If Crookston EDA is accepted for this grant, it won’t be in action until 2025. This grant would be used to maintain Crookston commercial and apartment buildings.

There is reportedly $100,050 allocated toward the beautification and signage grants. The Crookston EDA has received 20 applicants searching for these grant funds; four have been approved. Kaymee Denault of the EDA claims many applicants have applied for the paint and signage grant. This grant is worth up to $1,000 with no match required. Denault commented on one local business that has benefited from this grant, “one of them was Wonderful Life Boots, so stop by and see them,” said Denault, “they repainted their whole building and put-up lighting as well.” Applications for the remaining grants are still valid to date.

Donovan E. Wright-OBIT

Donovan E. Wright, 89, Mentor, MN, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile, MN.

Donovan Eugene Wright was born January 21, 1934, at the farm of his parents Bernard and Drusilla (McDonald) Wright in Cummings, North Dakota. He would later be joined by siblings Roger and Susan. He was baptized at Caledonia Lutheran Church in Caledonia, North Dakota. He graduated from Caledonia Consolidated High School in 1952, where was active in drama and choir. He was involved in the local 4-H club, serving in the office of president for one year. Amid a snowstorm, Don married his high school sweetheart, Jean A. Stigen, on February 19, 1955.

Don served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was a parts supply specialist for the 515 Transportation Company in support of the U.S. Rangers. After returning to Caledonia, he spent two years in the grain and hardware business. In December of 1960, Don and Jean moved to Minot, North Dakota, where they would remain for 36 years. Don was employed by Frontier Airlines from December 1960 until August 1986. During this period, he was active with the Air Line Employees Association (ALEA) as a local representative, serving as president of the association for one year. After Frontier left Minot, Don was employed by Continental Airlines from November 1986 to October 1993, before joining GP Express Airlines. In 1994, he returned to Frontier Airlines, serving as manager until February 1995, at which time he retired. During his airline career, Don and Jean were afforded the opportunity to travel much of the world and they continued doing so into retirement.

While in Minot, Don and Jean began caring for the children of Fred and Kaye Voeller when they traveled. This led to an incredible bond, such that Don and Jean became part of the family. The relationship continued as Don and Jean considered the Voellers youngest, Jane, as their daughter and her three children as their grandchildren. As of July 22, 2023, they have two great-grandchildren, Henry Donovan Saunders (9) and Owen Donovan Mayer (1 week).

During their time in Minot, Don and Jean joined First Lutheran Church, where Don served as a member of the church council and sang in the choir for over 20 years. Don was a member of Elks Lodge #1089 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2376. He was a proud member of the Minot and Fertile Lions clubs from 1969 to 2023, serving in the offices of president, zone chairman, deputy district Governor and regional secretary. Don was a member of the American Legion Post 238 in Fertile, Minnesota, from 2002 until 2023, serving as the chaplain for many years. Don was also a member of the Godfrey Township Board for several years.

Don and Jean retired to their home on Maple Lake in the summer of 1996, where they enjoyed boating, relaxing and spending time with family and friends. They were members of Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church and active in the local community. Over the past few years, friend and retired nurse, Phyllis Pederson, has helped Jean to care for Don. She became a daily presence and the only person he would listen to. Together, Don and Jean moved into Fair Meadow Nursing Home in late 2022.

Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean; adopted daughter, Jane Mayer; grandchildren, Thomas (Lisa) Saunders, Benjamin (Raeann) Mayer, and Kathryn Mayer; great-grandchildren, Henry Donovan Saunders and Owen Donovan Mayer; sister, Susan (George) Ackre; sister-in-law, DeVonne Wright; nieces and nephews, Kari (Rocky) Nettum, Nathan (Kathy) Wright, Jennifer (Ron) Piper, Shawn (Natalie) Ackre, Darin Ackre, and Melissa Ackre; and many great nieces and nephews.

Betty LuVern Dale-OBIT

betty_dale_feature-rotated-e1690292053729202460

Betty LuVern Dale, 89, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away in her home Thursday evening, July 20, 2023, with members of her loving family at her side.

Betty was born on the family farmstead near Halstad, MN on March 12, 1934, the youngest of four children of the union of Lars and Dina (Oien) Stene. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Halstad High School with the Class of 1953. Betty then moved to Crookston, where she enrolled in the Bethesda School of Nursing. After her graduation in 1954 as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Betty worked at a local hospital until her marriage to Orlen M. Dale on July 2, 1955. They would be blessed in coming years by the births of four children: Jeffrey, Daniel, Steven, and Renae. Orlen was employed in the construction field and for several years his work took the growing family to the communities of Fargo-Moorhead, Hallock, Climax, and other areas of North Dakota before finally settling in Crookston. Betty began working as an LPN at Crookstons Bethesda Hospital until her retirement in 1991 from what came to be known as RiverView Hospital. Countless numbers of patients benefited from the excellent care she gave over a rewarding career that spanned 47 years and the friendships Betty formed with her colleagues were lifelong.

Betty was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and WELCA. She also held memberships with Crookstons VFW Auxiliary and Golden Link Senior Center. She enjoyed doing needlework, including crocheting, knitting, and cross-stitching. Gardening was a love of both Betty and Orlen, and while he tended to the vegetable patch, she added to the beauty of their yard with her colorful flower beds. Sadly, Orlen passed away on October 27, 1997. Betty continued to look forward to coffee with her many friends; enjoying family gatherings with her being the center of attention, and quiet moments spent reading. She aged gracefully but regretted not being able to help others as she had done throughout her life. Though she wisely accepted her limitations, Betty made it known that she didnt have to like it!

Betty will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by her 4 children: Jeffrey Dale of Andover, MN, Daniel Dale of Crookston, MN, Steven Dale of Clearwater, FL, and Renae Sperling and husband, Jeffrey, of Crookston; 10 grandchildren: Eric (Abbe) Dale, Elissa (Lex) Mwesiga, Easton (Maddie) Dale, Emily (Andy) Wendorf, Carmen (Jeremy) Fath, Aaron (Erica) Dale, Chad (Amy) Sperling, Matthew Sperling, Heidi Sperling, and Heather Sperling (Scott Smith); 16 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Allen Stene of Ada, MN; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In addition to Orlen, Bettys beloved husband of 41 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, Lars and Dina Stene; sister, Irene Christianson, and brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Alice Stene. May God richly bless the memory of Betty LuVern Dale.

Bettys life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service to be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, August 2, 2023, in the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, MN, with The Rev. Michael Ozaki, officiating. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. The funeral will be live streamed by going to Bettys obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view. Burial will take place in the Skatvold Cemetery, Climax, MN. Ohio K-9 officer put on leave after police dog attacks man surrendering

shutterstock_467148911899548

An Ohio K-9 officer has been put on administrative leave following an incident this month in which the dog attacked a truck driver who was surrendering to state troopers with his hands up following a highway chase. Circleville Mayor Donald McIlroy said that K-9 Officer Ryan Speakman was placed on leave as the city’s five-member Use of Force Review Board investigates the circumstances of the incident that occurred on July 4 near Columbus.

McIlroy said he had viewed parts of the body-camera footage released by the Ohio State Highway Police that captured the police dog mauling 23-year-old Jadarrius Rose of Memphis, Tennessee.  He said: “We have a use of force review board that is looking at it. Once that is completed and I get it, then I will be making some decisions on when we release that report to the media.” McIlroy said the dog involved in the arrest has been put in a kennel while the investigation unfolds. The city’s Use of Force Review Board, comprised of community members, is expected to complete its report by the end of this week or next Monday. McIlroy said:  “This is the first time anything like this has happened. So, it’s new to us and this is why we have this review board. And once that review board is finished, we’ll make some determinations where we’ll go forward.”

According to the incident report, troopers from the state Highway Police Department’s Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspector unit attempted to pull Rose over for what they described as an alleged traffic defect violation. Rose allegedly refused to pull over and led troopers on a chase through three counties before police put stop sticks in the roadway ahead of the chase and blew out Rose’s tires, forcing him to stop and surrender to troopers. Body-camera video released by the state Highway Police shows the Circleville police dog arriving at the scene, and shows Rose complying with orders to get on his knees with both hands in the air. A police trooper can be heard in the video repeatedly yelling, “Do not release the dog with his hands up,” but the dog was apparently let loose and attacked Rose.

Rose was treated at a hospital following the K-9 attack and released into the custody of the state Highway Police. He was booked at the Ross County Jail on charges of failure to comply, a fourth-degree felony

Alabama woman apologizes after admitting she was not kidnapped

shutterstock_502975531760470

Police in Hoover, Alabama announced that days after a woman was found safe after she was allegedly kidnapped after stopping to help a toddler walking along the highway, the woman has now admitted she was not abducted. During a press conference Monday afternoon, Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis read a statement from Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, who said that the 25-year-old woman was not abducted the night of July 13 as she and her family had previously reported, and that she had not seen a child walking along I-459 the night she disappeared.

The statement read by Russell’s attorney read: “My client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf. There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have help in this incident, that this was a single act done by herself. My client was not with anyone or any hotel with anyone from the time she was missing. My client apologizes for her actions to this community, the volunteers who were searching for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies as well as to her friends and family. We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward, understanding that she made a mistake in this matter. Carlee, again, asks for your forgiveness and prayers.”

Russell ‘disappeared’ after calling 911 on the night of July 13 after telling a dispatcher that she stopped along I-459 on her way home from work after seeing the toddler walking by himself in a diaper along the highway. However when officials arrived on the scene, they found Russell’s car still running with her belongings inside, but she was nowhere to be found. After a statewide search that lasted over 48 hours, Russell was found on July 15 after reportedly walking home. Police said they were “unable to verify” her claims about a missing toddler and other key details from the 911 call.

Chief Derzis told reporters at Monday’s press conference that, “We knew it was a hoax. I’m glad we got this [referring to Russell’s statement]. We certainly laid the facts out to you guys. The sad thing is, there were so many people that were involved and took this thing very very seriously, we wanted the focus to be bringing her home, we’re excited about that.” Derzis said police would be meeting with Anthony and that charges against Russell would be announced when and if they were filed. No motive for Russell’s false abduction report were revealed.
