MN DNR REPORTS WELL SAMPLINGS WILL TAKE PLACE IN ST.LOUIS COUNTY FOR GROUNDWATER ATLAS

minnesota-department-of-natural-resources21081

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will collect water samples from about 180 wells in St. Louis County for use in developing a Groundwater Atlas of St. Louis County.

Selected well owners will be contacted by mail or phone to request permission to sample their wells. The process involves collecting a water sample from an outside spigot or hydrant for laboratory analysis. Dozens of different water components are analyzed to determine the natural chemistry of aquifers. Participation is voluntary, and owners will receive a report of the laboratory results. Sample well locations are shown on the maps produced for the atlas, but no contact or ownership information is included in the data. There is no cost to well owners.

Wells are selected based on geology, location, depth, and construction. Participation will help hydrologists create county maps and descriptions of groundwater distribution, movement, conditions, and the pollution sensitivity of aquifers. The final atlas products will be available as printed maps, reports, and geographic information system files on the web.

The groundwater atlases are used to identify viable drinking water sources, manage sustainability, guide well and septic system construction decisions, inform well-head protection efforts for public water supply, understand regional recharge and groundwater movement, and assess pollution sensitivity and possible contaminant migration. Neither healthy sampling nor the atlases are used to regulate individual well owners.

The Groundwater Atlas of St. Louis County is expected to be completed in 2025. This groundwater portion is Part B of a two-part series. Part A, the geology of St. Louis County, was conducted by the Minnesota Geological Survey in 2022.

The County Atlas Program is partly funded by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.

A full description of this Minnesota DNR program and completed atlas products are available on the Minnesota DNR website (//mndnr.gov/groundwatermapping).

For more information, contact Emma Young (emma.young@state.mn.us), DNR hydrogeologist, 651-259-5680 or Paul Putzier (paul.putzier@state.mn.us), DNR County Groundwater Atlas Program supervisor, 651-259-5692.

Federal judge finds Rudy Giuliani liable for defaming Georgia election workers

shutterstock_1567808539765168

On Wednesday, a federal judge awarded a default judgment to two Georgia election workers as part of their civil defamation suit against former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani.  U.S. Judge Beryl Howell found Giuliani liable for his defamatory remarks, leveling harsh sanctions against him (including the default judgment), and ordering a trial to determine the complete scope of damages.

The election workers, mother-daughter Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, sued the former New York City mayor for defamation over erroneous remarks he made accusing the pair of fraudulently manipulating ballots on Election Day 2020 in Georgia. Freeman and Moss became the subjects of a Trump-backed conspiracy theory that was later found to be “false and unsubstantiated,” according to an investigation by the Georgia Elections Board. In an appearance before a committee of the Georgia state legislature, Giuliani told lawmakers that a video circulating online showed “Ruby Freeman and Shaye Freeman Moss … quite obviously surreptitiously passing around USB ports, as if they’re vials of heroin or cocaine.”

U.S. Judge Beryl Howell said in a 57-page opinion in the case: “The bottom line is that Giuliani has refused to comply with his discovery obligations and thwarted plaintiffs Ruby Freeman and Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss’ procedural rights to obtain any meaningful discovery in this case … Rather than simply play by the rules designed to promote a discovery process necessary to reach a fair decision on the merits of plaintiffs’ claims, Giuliani has bemoaned plaintiffs’ efforts to secure his compliance as ‘punishment by process’ … Donning a cloak of victimization may play well on a public stage to certain audiences, but in a court of law, this performance has served only to subvert the normal process of discovery in a straightforward defamation case.”

In a statement, Freeman and Moss lauded the ruling: “Rudy Giuliani helped unleash a wave of hatred and threats we never could have imagined. It cost us our sense of security and our freedom to go about our lives. Nothing can restore all we lost, but today’s ruling is yet another neutral finding that has confirmed what we have known all along: that there was never any truth to any of the accusations about us and that we did nothing wrong. We were smeared for purely political reasons, and the people responsible can and should be held accountable.”

Judge Howell wrote that a trial to determine the full scope of damages will take place later this year or early next, adding that “the jury will be instructed that they must, when determining an appropriate sum of punitive damages, infer that Giuliani is intentionally trying to hide relevant discovery about his financial assets for the purpose of artificially deflating his net worth.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell appears to have another medical episode during public event

shutterstock_180961367590498

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared to freeze again during an exchange with reporters on Wednesday during an event in his home state of Kentucky.

Video footage showed McConnell, 81, trailing off and remaining silent after he was asked if he would seek re-election in 2026. While the Republican leader acknowledged the question, he froze and began to stare ahead; after roughly 10 seconds, an aide stepped in and asked whether he heard the question. McConnell replied, “yes,” but continued to look off into the distance, prompting the aide to say, “we’re going to need a minute.” The aide then asked for assistance from what appeared to be a member of McConnell’s security detail. The senator appeared to regain his composure after roughly 30 seconds of silence, clearing his throat and stating, “OK.” McConnell answered two more questions from reporters, though his aide relayed the topics to him. He then left the gathering.

A spokesperson for McConnell said he felt “momentarily lightheaded and paused” during the press conference, adding that while he said he feels fine, “as a prudential measure, the leader will be consulting a physician prior to his next event.” President Biden told reporters after delivering remarks on the federal response to Hurricane Idalia and the wildfires on Maui that McConnell is a “good friend,” and said he is going to try to get in contact with him.

The incident marked the second time McConnell appeared to have a medical episode at a public event. The first instance of McConnell freezing occurred during a press conference in the U.S. Capitol on July 26, when he stopped speaking mid-sentence while delivering opening comments and appeared unable to continue with his remarks for roughly 15 seconds. An aide to McConnell later said he “felt lightheaded and stepped away for a moment.”

The freezing incidents come after McConnell tripped at a dinner event in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington in March, suffering a concussion. He was hospitalized for several days and received additional treatment at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. McConnell returned to the Senate more than a month after the fall.

McConnell has served as the top Senate Republican since 2007, and he became the longest-serving Senate leader in history when the new Congress began in January. The lawmaker is among the oldest politicians in office and is the 13th longest-serving senator in history with 38 years in office.

SPORTS FEEVER – August 31, 2023

sports-feever-logo65107

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

The start of the Minnesota High School Football season is this week and teams across northwest Minnesota are playing Thursday and Friday.

I will give my predictions on who will be in the section championship at the Fargodome at the end of the season.

SECTION 8AA
Barnesville vs Pelican Rapids
Barnesville is the easiest pick of all the area sections. Pelican Rapids had a very good team last year and have a lot of key players back and I would be surprised if both teams aren’t facing off in the championship.

SECTION 8A
Mahnomen/Waubun vs Red Lake County.
Mahnomen/Waubun has some great players coming back this year and Red Lake County might have been the youngest team in the section last year has a lot of experience back. They have size, athletes, and are always well coached.
Don’t count out Polk County West and Ada-Borup-West either. Any of those four teams in the championship would be o pretty good bet.

SECTION 6 9-MAN
Fertile-Beltrami vs either NCE/UH or Blackduck
Fertile-Beltrami is the two-time defending section champion and have a bunch of horses back again this year. They just reload and have great numbers every year. The opponent, I believe would be either Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal or Blackduck. Both teams had solid teams last year and I would put money on those two in the second and third seed, playing in the semi-finals for the rights to be in the championship.

SECTION 8 9-MAN
This is the toughest one to pick. I am guessing it will be a fight between ive teams. Kittson County Central, Goodridge/Grygla, Warren-Alvarado-Oslo, Win-E-Mac or Stephen-Argyle.
The regular season match-ups will be big for each team and seeding will be important, but it all comes down to who put more time in the offseason.

SECTION 8AAA
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and East Grand Forks.
DGF beat EGF in the section championship last year and I am expecting the two teams to battle for the title again. Morris moved into the section this year and to be honest, I don’t know much about them, other than they had a good season last year and could be a team to keep an eye one.

Good luck to all teams and if I didn’t pick you to be in the championship, don’t take it personal. I am usually wrong!

Apple TV+ shares Season 3 trailer for ‘The Morning Show’

shutterstock_154922758137269

Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for Season 3 of The Morning Show.

While a previous teaser trailer established that Alex (Jennifer Aniston) is the sole anchor of the morning broadcast and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) is now on the evening news, the newly released footage establishes new series regular Jon Hamm as “an Elon Musk-type business titan with more money than God”, and a first glimpse of fellow newbie Nicole Beharie.  In addition, Mark Duplass, Néstor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee and Julianna Margulies all reprise their roles in Season 3.

The Apple TV+ drama will return with two episodes on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Single episodes will follow weekly through the finale on Nov. 8, for a total of 10 episodes. It was already revealed that the show has been renewed for Season 4.

Take a look at the Season 3 trailer for The Morning Show – here.
