John L. Opgrand-OBIT

john-opgrand-e1691534249748228404

John L. Opgrand, a man of strength and charm, embarked on his life journey on April 3rd, 1917, as the fifth of sixteen children born to Anton and Gida (Eina) Opgrand in the town of Hitterdal, Minnesota. Raised in the charming town of Ulen, John’s vibrant spirit and athletic skill shone through during his high school years, endearing him to all his friends and family who cherished his humorous nature.

John’s destiny took a patriotic turn when, on October 27th, 1939, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the US Army Air Corp. As a Private First-Class in the US Army Air Corp, he proudly served with the 19th Squadron, 20th Air Base Group. Remarkably, John was part of a true family legacy of service, as four of his brothers were serving their country at the same time during World War II.

In a fateful chapter of his military service, John was sent to the Philippines, where he displayed unwavering bravery and dedication to his duty. However, the uncertainties of war would cast their shadow upon him, as he was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was part of the Bataan Death March in which he survived, later being confined in the Cabanatuan POW camp in the Province of Nueva Ecija, Luzon Island, in the Philippine Islands.

Tragically, on June 10, 1942, John died as a POW, marking the end of a young life full of promise. His selfless sacrifice did not go unnoticed, as the nation posthumously honored him with an array of distinguished awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Prisoner of War Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal, among others.
Though John’s physical presence may have been lost, his name is eternally inscribed on the Wall of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Taguig City, Philippines. There, he stands among countless American heroes who bravely faced the unknown, their resting places forever elusive. His sacrifice remains a testament to the unyielding commitment of our armed forces and a symbol of our nation’s resilience.

John’s legacy continues through his cousins, nieces and nephews, many whom live in the region having ties to the Ada, Ulen, Hitterdal and Twin Valley communities.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 10:00am at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, MN to celebrate and honor the life of John Opgrand – a true American patriot who selflessly served his county with unwavering dedication. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome to attend. The service will be recorded and available to view on the Anderson Family Funeral Home website following the service. www.andersonfamilyfh.com

MINNESOTA FAMILIES ENCOURAGED TO SAVE BACK TO SCHOOL RECEIPTS FOR TAX BENEFITS

mn-revenue363471

Back-to-school time can also be tax savings time for Minnesota families who save receipts on school supply purchases. The Minnesota Department of Revenue reminds parents and caregivers to save receipts on school supply purchases to claim valuable K-12 tax benefits when filing their taxes next year. In addition, due to changes made during the legislative session, over 31,000 more Minnesota families will be able to claim the credit this year.

Two tax benefits can help Minnesota families pay expenses related to their child’s education: the refundable K-12 Education Credit (income limits apply) and the K-12 Education Subtraction (no income limits).

“As a parent and grandparent, I know the strain that families feel during back-to-school time trying to balance the need for new school supplies with other family expenses,” said Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart. “Saving school supply shopping receipts and claiming either the K-12 Education Subtraction or the expanded K-12 Education Credit will help Minnesota families save some money when filing their taxes next year.”

Last year, more than 17,000 families received the K-12 Education Credit for an average credit of $280. Over 134,000 families received the K-12 Education Subtraction for an average subtraction of $1,266.

These programs reduce the tax parents pay and could deliver a larger refund when filing a Minnesota income tax return. To qualify, the purchases must be for educational services or required materials. The child must be attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private, or qualified home school and meet other qualifications.

Save those receipts
Remember to save your receipts to claim the credit or subtraction. Use a folder or envelope to store receipts for the upcoming tax filing season or pick up a special envelope at our State Fair booth, located in the Education Building.

Most expenses for educational instruction or materials qualify, including:

  • Pens and notebooks
  • Textbooks
  • Rental or purchases of educational equipment such as musical instruments
  • Computer hardware (hotspots, modems, and routers) and educational software (up to $200 for the subtraction and $200 for the credit) *
  • After-school tutoring and educational summer camps taught by a qualified instructor

*Fees for internet service do not qualify

Household Income for the K-12 Education Credit

Number of qualifying children in K-12
Household income must be less than
1 or 2
$76,000
3
$79,000
More than 3
$79,000 plus $3,000 for each additional child

T
axpayers who are not required to file an income tax return must do so in order to claim a refund for any eligible education credit.

K-12 Education Subtraction
There are no income limits to qualify for the education subtraction. Most parents qualify. Parents can claim the K-12 Subtraction for tuition paid to private schools or college courses used to satisfy high school graduation requirements.

The firefighters arrived on the scene to find a 2018 GMC Yukon wedged into a culvert up to the third row of the vehicle. The single occupant was alert and talking with rescue personnel. The driver was removed from the vehicle at 8:51 a.m. and transferred to Altru Hospital with severe but non life-threatening injuries. East Grand Forks Fire Department was assisted on the scene by Altru Ambulance, Polk County Sheriff, Minnesota State Patrol, and Stuart’s Towing.

CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT HIRES AIDAN LIEBL

aidan-liebl-rotated-e1691437648159656308

The Crookston Fire Department has recently added a young face to its staff. Aidan Liebl, a Mankato native, officially started on August 7 as a full-time firefighter.

Liebl is a 2022 graduate of Mankato West high school, where he started his proper training as a senior in high school. “It was a hard process when I started my fire career in high school, starting my recruit academy my senior year with the Mankato Fire Department,” said Liebl. “They took me through the basic courses: firefighter 1, hazmat, and firefighter 2.”

This is the first full-time firefighter position Liebl has accepted, which is over 300 miles from home. “The reason I picked Crookston is that when I saw the opening, I did some background research,” said Liebl. “I noticed the work with the community, and the events the hold, and just overall it being a smaller community, I can meet more people and get involved.” The Crookston Fire Department is now reportedly fully staffed with the hiring of Aidan Liebl.

Although Liebl is just starting his career as a firefighter, he explained what he is mostly looking forward to in his field. “I think the most rewarding part of this job will be getting involved with the community,” said Liebl. “I also believe the atmosphere will allow me to create another family within the station and workplace.”

When Liebl isn’t on duty, he enjoys going hunting and fishing. More specifically, fishing for Waterfowl and turkey hunting. He also enjoys spending time with friends/family and occasionally playing video games.

The Crookston Fire Department are thrilled with their new hiring and foresees Liebl’s bright future in Crookston.

3 dead in midair helicopter collision while firefighting in California

shutterstock_308147726226858

Fire officials confirmed that a firefighting helicopter crashed after it collided with a second helicopter while battling a blaze in Southern California, killing all three crew members. The victims have been identified as Division Chief Josh Bischof, Capt. Tim Rodriguez and pilot Tony Sousa, Cal Fire said. Sousa was a contracted pilot and not a Cal Fire employee.

Cal Fire Southern Region Chief David Fulcher said that the crash occurred after Riverside County firefighters were called to the scene of a structure fire in Cabazon at about 6 p.m. on Sunday, and Cal Fire helicopters and planes were called in to help extinguish the blaze.  Fulcher said at a news conference: “While engaged in the firefight, two helicopters collided. The first helicopter was able to land safely nearby. Unfortunately, the second helicopter crashed and, tragically, all three members perished.”

Both helicopters were contracted by Cal Fire and arrived at the scene with different objectives. The helicopter which was able to safely land was a Sikorsky Skycrane, a type that carries retardant or water that’s dropped on a blaze, Fulcher said. The one that crashed was a Bell helicopter, used for observation while fighting fires. The crash caused an additional four-acre fire, which was then extinguished, Fulcher said.

Fulcher said that the cause of the collision was still under investigation, with the National Transportation Safety Board investigating the crash.  California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a post on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter, that his office was in “close coordination” with CalFire after the helicopter crash.

Former Minneapolis officer sentenced to nearly 5 years for role in George Floyd’s death

shutterstock_1773600695102032

The last former Minneapolis police officer convicted in state court for his role in the killing of George Floyd was sentenced Monday to a 57-month sentence — the equivalent of 4 years and 9 months. Floyd’s killing touched off protests worldwide and forced a national reckoning of police brutality and racism.

Tou Thao had testified that he merely served as a “human traffic cone” when he held back bystanders who gathered as former Officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, knelt on Floyd’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes while the Black man pleaded for his life on May 25, 2020. A bystander video captured Floyd’s fading cries of “I can’t breathe.”

Thao had rejected a plea bargain on the state charge, saying “it would be lying” to plead guilty when he didn’t think he was in the wrong. He instead agreed to let a judge decide the case based on evidence from Chauvin’s 2021 murder trial and the federal civil rights trial in 2022 of Thao and former Officers Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng.

In his 177-page ruling, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill found Thao guilty in May of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Cahill said Thao’s actions separated Chauvin and two other former officers from the crowd, including an emergency medical technician, allowing his colleagues to continue restraining Floyd and preventing bystanders from providing medical aid. He wrote: “There is proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Thao’s actions were objectively unreasonable from the perspective of a reasonable police officer, when viewed under the totality of the circumstances … Thao’s actions were even more unreasonable in light of the fact that he was under a duty to intervene to stop the other officers’ excessive use of force and was trained to render medical aid.”

The sentence Judge Cahill handed down Monday will run concurrently with Thao’s 3 1/2-year sentence on his separate conviction on a federal civil rights charge. His state sentence was more than the 4 years recommended under Minnesota state guidelines.
