CROOKSTON GIRLS SOCCER TIE FERGUS FALLS IN SEASON OPENER

joslyn-wallace-332x420675130-1

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team kicked off the 2023 season with an exciting back-and-forth match against the Fergus Falls Otters that ended with a 2-2 draw at the Crookston High School soccer field.

FIRST HALF –
The first 10 minutes of the match saw Fergus Falls have most of the possession but could not convert that into a scoring opportunity. Crookston had the first opportunity 15 minutes into the match with a free kick, but it went over the net. Fergus Falls then had the next two chances, but a pass in front of the net at 18 minutes and a corner kick at 27 minutes both went wide.
Crookston finished the first half strong with the majority of the possession, but could not capitalize on several chances, and they went to halftime tied 0-0.

SECOND HALF –
Fergus Falls came out strong in the second half as Brynn Walter buried a shot in the top left corner to give Fergus Falls the 1-0 lead. Crookston would quickly respond with pressure in Fergus Falls’ zone, but could not capitalize on a free kick. Fergus Falls started to gain momentum as they had shot attempts at the 49th and 51st minutes.
Crookston needed a big play, and they got it as Reese Swanson punted it to Cassie Solheim, who took it at around midfield and then dribbled it all the way to the corner of the box and launched a laser right into the top left corner of the net to put Crookston on the board and tie the game at 1-1.

After Fergus responded with a shot in the 57th minute, the next ten minutes saw sparse opportunities for either team, with Fergus Falls having the edge in overall possession. Crookston and Fergus traded shot attempts in the 69th and 71st minutes before Madi Budke scored in the 76th minute to give Fergus Falls the 2-1 lead.
It looked grim for Crookston, but with 81 seconds to go, Cassie Solhiem came up clutch again with a beautiful goal on a free kick to tie up the game and preserve the 2-2 draw for Crookston.

Both Crookston and Fergus Falls start the year 0-0-1. Crookston will host St John’s Prep on Monday.

CROOKSTON VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO BAGELY IN SEASON OPENER

danielle-kresl-470x420942817-1

The Crookston Pirate Volleyball team struggled to start the season as the Bagley Flyers scored the first eight points of the match and won the match 3-1 (25-11, 27-25, 21-25, 25-15) in the season opener match for both teams at the Crookston High School gymnasium.

First Set
Bagley couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season as they scored the first eight points while taking advantage of four Pirate mistakes and two Jeana Proulx aces for an 8-0 lead. Crookston finally got on the board when Bagley misplayed a ball, but the Flyers responded with four more points for a 12-1 lead.  The lead would stay in double figures until Crookston got within a 17-9 deficit after a Mackenzie Funk ace. Bagley dominated the rest of the way for a 25-11 victory.

Second Set
The teams were tied at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. They continued to battle back and forth before the teams were tied at 17. Crookston took a 19-17 lead when Bagley had two hitting errors, which sparked a run that gave the Pirates a 24-18 lead. Bagley settled down and battled back in a big way as Kira Thompson and Sadie Fultz had back-to-back kills, Isabella Warmbold had an ace, and Fultz followed with another kill before Crookston had an attack go out of bounds to get within a 24-23 deficit. Warmbold followed with another ace to tie the set at 24. The teams exchanged points and were tied at 25 before Bagley finished with two kills to complete the come-from-behind victory 27-25.

Third Set
Bagley started the set by scoring the first four points before they had a bad pass, and Crookston scored to trail 4-1. That first Pirate point sparked a 4-1 run to tie the set at 5-5. Kristine Bernd had a kill, and Bagley committed three straight errors before Naomi Johnson had a kill. After another Bagley error, Bernd had an ace for a 12-5 lead to cap an 11-1 run. Bagley would slowly chip away at the Crookston lead and got within a 22-21 deficit before they served into the net. Joey Nesseth followed with an ace, and the set ended when Bagley hit out of bounds, and Crookston won 25-21 to force a fourth set.

Fourth Set
Bagley set the tone in the fourth set by going on a 7-0 run to start. Crookston battled back to get within a 13-11 deficit after a Bernd block. Bagley settled down and pulled away by outscoring the Pirates 12-4 to cruise to a 25-15 victory to win the match 3-1.

Crookston drops to 0-1 on the year and will host Mahnomen-Waubun on Tuesday. Bagley improves to 1-0 on the year.

CROOKSTON BOYS SOCCER CRUISES PAST ST. JOHN’S PREP IN SEASON OPENER

caden-boike-2974863

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team kicked off the 2023 season with an impressive 4-1 victory over St. John’s Prep at the Crookston High School soccer field.

FIRST HALF –
The first 10 minutes of the match saw even play, with neither team getting a good scoring opportunity. That all changed a little over 12 minutes into the half when Crookston had its first shot on goal, and that led the Pirates to complete domination of the final 28 minutes of the half. Two minutes after the first shot on goal, Crookston had another shot on goal, and the St. John’s Prep goalie went down to make the save. The ball bounced loose, and there was a scrum in front of the net as Crookston tried another shot, and it was saved again.
A little over
halfway through the first half, Crookston continued to put pressure on St. John’s Prep and got a shot on goal, but it was stopped again.
The officials paused the game with 17:37 left in the half for a water break with the temperature at 85 degrees and 55 percent humidity.
After the water break, Crookston continued to put pressure on and Carter Trudeau had the ball by the net and was shoved from behind, which gave the Pirates a penalty shot. Brandon Colburn had the penalty kick, blasted the shot into the back of the net, and gave Crookston a 1-0 lead with 16:06 left in the half.
Crookston continued to dominate the rest of the half and had several more shots on goal, but the St. John’s Prep goalie made some nice saves, and Crookston took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston came out strong in the second half and actually picked up the pressure as they seemed to wear down St. John’s Prep with their outstanding depth. Crookston controlled the ball from the start, but it took just shy of 16 minutes before they put a shot on goal, the goalie made the save before it bounced to Matt Contreras, and he kicked a line drive into the net from about 10 yards out for a 2-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, Crookston added another goal as Jack Everett perfectly placed a corner kick in front of the net, and Lucas Miller was there to kick the ball into the net for a 3-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, St. John’s Prep’s Jorge Leo kicked the ball from about 25 to 30 yards out, and it sailed perfectly over the head of the Pirate goalie into the upper right-hand corner of the net to bring them within a 3-1 deficit.
Crookston didn’t waste any time with an answer as Brandon Colburn recorded his second goal of the game when he received a pass in front of the goal and blasted it into the net for a 4-1 lead with over nine minutes left in the match.
Crookston held on and won the game 4-1 in the home opener.

Crookston improves to 1-0 on the year and will host Fergus Falls on Tuesday. St. John’s Prep drops to 0-1 on the year.

SCRUFFY TAILS INTRODUCES THEIR NEWEST TEAM MEMBER-DIRECTOR ANA GUSTAFSON

gustafson394626

Scruffy Tails Humane Society would like to introduce their newest hire, Ana Gustafson. She has now taken over as the director of Scruffy Tails.

Gustafson is from Nebish, Minnesota, located north of Bemidji. Gustafson has been a licensed veterinary technician for ten years. She studied at the University of Minnesota Crookston and the Minnesota School of Business in Lakeville.

Experience seems to be a non-issue for Scruffy Tails’ newest team member. “I’ve worked at several places. Most notably at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, and I’ve worked out in Seattle,” said Gustafson. While in Seattle, Ana worked for both emergency and specialist veterinary care centers.

Gustafson is looking to immediately impact the Humane Society by being their first director in quite some time. “They’ve been without a director for a year and kind of been treading water,” said Gustafson, “There are a lot of things the board has been able to, but there are a lot of things they have had to sideline. I think I’ll be able to make a difference.”

Gustafson believes Scruffy Tails has been a staple in the community, and she claims to assure community members that the heart and passion for the animals is still a driving force. “Scruffy Tails has been a long-standing institution in the community. They did go through a name change a couple of years ago,” said Gustafson, “The heart is still there. The mission of the place has always been to find loving homes for them and to be able to help the animals that come through our door.”

Ana stated that the next step in the building renovations is crucial for animals and their living conditions. The staff at Scruffy Tails are concerned about the downstairs area of the facility and the public visiting that area due to its run-down conditions. The downstairs room contains pet kennels and storage for food and other goods.

On Sunday, August 27, the community is invited to have a meet and greet with Gustafson from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Scruffy tails Humane Society located at 720 E Robert Street. “Sunday is a chance for people to put a face to the name and talk to me,” said Gustafson, “If they have any questions, we will have information up on renovations and renovations that we are looking to do. This will be a great opportunity for people that will have questions. Members of the board and myself will be there.”

Coffee and refreshments will also be provided during the Sunday event.

POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DISCUSS UPDATES ON PRELIMINARY BUDGETS AND 2024 LEVY

polk-county-government-114773

Polk County Administrator Chuck Whiting updated preliminary budgets Tuesday morning at the Polk County Board of Commissioners meeting.

The board was informed of potential cost changes regarding employee health insurance and what that may cost. “Health insurance for most of our groups came in. It doesn’t affect the budget, but it does affect the employees,” said Polk County Administrator Chuck Whiting, “The county contributes $1,350 a month in 2024 towards the Blue Cross Blue Shield plan.”

With employee insurance rates increasing by nine percent going into 2024, Whiting stated the increase won’t affect the county’s agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield. “That’s okay; it’s more of a reflection of the agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield per capita on rate increases for 2022, 2023, and 2024,” said Whiting, “But I’m a little concerned that the true rate may be higher than that.” Polk County commissioners and Whiting agreed to monitor these rates closely heading into 2025.

Other department budgets have been submitted and need refinement. The deadline for all department budget plans needs to be forwarded to Polk County by the final Polk County board meeting in September to set the preliminary levy. “We need to collect other information like County Program Aid, debt service, things that will be in the budget,” said Whiting, “In three to four weeks, we have a couple of days we have budget reviews with the board in each department and set the preliminary budget after that.” There will also be a public hearing on the preliminary budget in December.

Whiting is projecting a 4.5 percent preliminary levy to decrease to three percent by year-end.

As of now, Whiting believes there is nothing significant in terms of changes to the budget, stating “nothing stands out as unique.” The board is set to look at position issues within the county and take proposals that have come forward.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

The commissioners are discussing the possible re-roofing of the Government Center, and they can fund that project with previous bond money at their disposal. The board agreed on taking bids for this project in January of 2024 at the earliest.
