CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRLS SOCCER AND MESABI EAST PLAY TO SCORELESS TIE

brooklyn-waldal924915

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team had many shots on goal but could not put one in, as they tied with Mesabi East 0-0.

FIRST HALF
Crookston entered the match today with a different formation, hoping to generate more offense. Makayla Tahran, Nashalie Tellez, and Keona Arnold played well defensively, keeping Mesabi East out of the goal and without a shot on net. Miryah Epema and Jojo Wallace had scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize. Despite the Pirates having seven shots on goal, the game went into the half tied at 0-0.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston continued to play well defensively, as they only allowed Mesabi East to get three shots on goal. Crookston kept up offensive pressure with 11 shots on goal. Madelyn Knutson and Madeline Harbott had shots on goal but did not go in. Crookston made one last effort to score a goal by pulling Cassie Solheim out of the net and putting her back on offense. Shyuh Burnette replaced Solheim, and she made one save. Solheim and the Pirates were able to put pressure on the Mesabi East goal in the last ten minutes, but again, they could not bury one as Crookston had to settle for a 0-0 tie.

Crookston improves to 3-7-1 on the season and takes on Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Monday.

CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRLS SOCCER SHUTOUT BY HIBBING

madelineharbott527520

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team played in rainy conditions and couldn’t get the offense going as they fell to Hibbing by a score of 3-0.

FIRST HALF
Crookston played Hibbing at a turf field, which, mixed with the rain, made field conditions a factor in the game. Hibbing broke through early, with Isabella Moenkedick getting a through ball in the 21st minute. Cassie Solheim attempted to come out and make the stop, but Moenkedick snuck it past and scored to give Hibbing a 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later, Moenkedick again scored to make it 2-0. Crookston could only get two shots on goal, and neither went in.

SECOND HALF –
The second half was more defensive as Hibbing had less than half the shots on goal than in the first half. Most of the play was in the middle third of the field. Crookston was passing well, but they could only get a few shots off. Hibbing got one more goal, as Moenkedick broke away and scored to give herself a hat trick and Hibbing the 3-0 lead. Solheim ended the game with a solid 14 saves as Crookston kept Hibbing scoreless for the last eight minutes. The Pirates only got another two shots on goal, and Hibbing cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Crookston falls to 3-7-1 on the season and heads to Hibbing next Friday.

CROOKSTON BOYS SOCCER SHUT OUT BY HIBBING

kadin-edwards-2731905

The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team was only able to get six shots on goal as they were shut out by Hibbing 2-0.

FIRST HALF
Crookston struggled offensively due to rain. Hibbing plays on an artificial turf field, which became slippery. It was tough for either team to get much offense going early. Blake Melsa tallied eight saves in the first half. Hibbing broke through in the 20th minute when Braiden Elven scored a goal to make it 1-0 Hibbing. Sixteen minutes later, Julien Fisher put one in the net, and Hibbing took a 2-0 lead. Hibbing continued to play stout defense as they kept Crookston off the board and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF –
Crookston played a much better second half, as they could keep Hibbing out of the net. Melsa made four saves, but the Pirate offense could still not get anything going. Crookston ended the game with just six shots on net, none of which went in, and Hibbing held on for a 2-0 victory.

Crookston drops to 4-6-2 on the year and takes on Mesabi East (Aurora) on Saturday. Hibbing takes on East Grand Forks on Saturday.

SPORTS FEEVER by Chris Fee of KROX Radio – chrisjfee@yahoo.com

Believe it or not, playoffs for soccer and tennis begin in two weeks. Fall has flown by.  Football only has two and a half weeks left of the regular season after Friday night.

— — —

The Minnesota Twins are your 2023 American League Champions!! The Twins have the second-best record since the all-star break.  The Twins are 12-0 this year when Ryan Jeffers hits a home run.
The Twins have the best group of rookies this year. They were patient with Max Kepler, who has been solid since the all-star break. They have Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober, two of the top pitchers in the league. Kenta Maeda will be coming out of the bullpen the rest of the season and playoff, which greatly boosts the bullpen.
The Twins are hot right now and getting healthy and more confident playing the A’s and Rockies to end the season.

This year is the year the Twins can snap their playoff skid. We will see. But things are looking up for the Twins this year.

Crookston High School Principal Matt Torgerson received the following email from a Grand Forks Central parent after the Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer game with Grand Forks Central earlier this week. (The Crookston player was Jackson Reese.)

Good morning!  Crookston played Grand Forks Central last night, and I just wanted to share a quick story.  Towards the end of the game, my son went down with a cramp. Almost immediately, one of your players helped him stretch it out. I just thought this is what the game is about: teaching these boys good sportsmanship. I was very moved by the gesture, and I appreciate your boys to help out. We don’t always pass on the good news, so I wanted to share.

Thank you!

Next week is the final week of regular season soccer!! Section 8A Boys and Girls soccer will start playoffs in two weeks!

SECTION 8A BOYS SOCCER
St. Cloud Cathedral is the extremely heavy favorite to win the section. They are undefeated and ranked in the top five in the state.
Crookston has three games left in the regular season as they travel to Hibbing, Mesabi East, and East Grand Forks. If Crookston wins all three games, they could possibly jump to a top-four seed in the Section. There is a lot to play for in the game, but most importantly, finishing the year strong. Besides St. Cloud Cathedral, I would think Crookston would be able to beat the rest of the section teams if they play like they are capable. At the same time, they could lose to anybody they play if they don’t play well. The second through eighth teams are all pretty close. It will be a fun section tourney.
The first round of the section tournament will be Thursday, October 12 at the high seed.

SECTION 8A GIRLS SOCCER

Section 8A Girls Soccer has three teams fighting for the top spot, with St. Cloud Cathedral, Albany, and East Grand Forks. There are three outstanding teams in the section, and either of the three could be section champs.
Crookston has four games remaining. I don’t think they can move up to the top 4, but ending the regular season on a four-game winning streak would be huge.
There will have to be a play-in game on Tuesday, October 10. The first round (quarterfinals) begins at the high seed on Thursday, October 12.

The Section 8A Girls Tennis tournament will begin Thursday, October 12. Here are my thoughts on how seeding should go.

1.Staples-Motley (should be unanimous pick)
2. Thief River Falls
3. Crookston (beat EGF 4-3, lost to EGF 4-3, and beat them in 4 of 7 spots (not including 4th doubles because that isn’t a score used in the tournament) Pretty easy to place Crookston 3.
4. Perham
5. East Grand Forks (Lost to Perham 4-3, beat WDC)
6. Wadena-Deer Creek
7-9. Park Rapids, Parkers Prairie, Roseau

A professor of chemistry wanted to teach his 5th grade class a lesson about the evils of liquor, so he produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms.

“Now, class, closely observe the worms,” said the professor while putting a worm into the water.

The worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be. He then put the second worm into the whiskey. It curled up and writhed about painfully, then quickly sank to the bottom, dead as a doornail.

“Now, what lesson can we learn from this experiment?” the professor asked.

Johnny, who naturally sits in back, raised his hand and wisely, responded confidently, “Drink whiskey and you won’t get worms.”

The Polk County Board of Commissioners met last Wednesday and reviewed the preliminary budgets from MIS and the Sheriff’s Department.

MIS DEPARTMENT PRELIMINARY BUDGET

The commissioners reviewed Polk County’s technology preliminary budget (MIS). MIS director Levi Webster presented the budget to the board, and the proposed budget included a total budget increase of $26,000 from 2023. The budget also included $469,343 would be allocated toward salaries and wages.

Webster also stated that data processing and software updates around the counties would take a large part of the expenditures, with an estimated $316,175 allocated toward those operations. He also proposed to the board that updated laptops would go to various county departments.

“Our laptops are just a standard model on the state contract,” said Webster, “After four years, we usually replace them. So, it will be a combination of social services, environmental services, and all the departments in the county.” The new laptops installed in the department will come out of the equipment budget and cost approximately $222,752.

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT PRELIMINARY BUDGET

The commissioners reviewed the proposed preliminary budget for the Polk County Sheriff’s Department. The budget included $3,305,372 in total expenditures, which is over $200,000 than last year’s budget.

Polk County Sheriff James Tadman presented the proposed budget to the commissioners and stated they would use $9,000 from the 2023 funds to renew the squad car camera software. Other software updates include annual software renewal for the data pilot police phone. The yearly cost of renewal is approximately $2,000. This technology instantly lets officers acquire evidence data from cell phones and tablet computers.

“It’s putting a new one in there from what he had with our investigation funds for any type of investigation or tools that we need,” said Tadman, “This will be a new tool and add-on, it will be for that phone ripping software.”

Tadman also proposed the purchase of the power phone annual software. This new tool is used for medical emergencies and is a step up in technology from the Rolodex.

“This is for medical issues, so anytime comes in we call up the Rolodex, or anytime someone comes and says ‘my husband having a heart attack, our telecommunicators have a flip chart,” said Tadman, “What they do with that is they end up doing is flip it and it gives them a step by step of what to do. This gives our telecommunicators up-to-date ways information on how to respond to the medical call.”

The budget also included receiving $87,041 from returning their eight leased vehicles to the enterprise. The cars included four Tahoe’s, two Silverado’s, and two Traverse’s.

OVERVIEW OF BUDGET MEETINGS

After the preliminary budget reviews were completed, the commissioners and County Administrator Chuck Whiting discussed the overview of the discussions. They came to terms with the County Levy increase, which sets the limit on the final levy. After discussion, the board agreed on a 4% percent levy increase. That will not finalized until the next board meeting.

Whiting stated that he and the board are pleased with the current budgets. “The board has spent two days going over the department budgets; the department heads did a good job bringing forward their budgets,” said Whiting, “I didn’t see anything I’d consider to be over the top.”

The next Polk County Board meeting will be on Tuesday, September 26.
